ICOM IC-V80 handheld review

Today on HamRadioComms I do a review of the ICOM IC-V80 HD 2 meter handheld. The Sport version is identical and comes with a 6 AA holder, this HD model has a 1900mha Li Ion battery and rapid charger.

Hello, hamradiocomms. How is the sound pressure on the V80? I grew up with a much older model, the IC-02AT, and couldn't find any modern HT with that good a speaker. I'm looking for a unit that has good sound, one I can use in noisy environments. Would the V80 be a good candidate? Thank you, and more power to your channel.

Hi, the IC-V80 has a 36mm large speaker and delivers 750mW of loud audio. It's one of the louder handhelds out there.

I am looking for a radio for the purpose of listening to aviation traffic. Could anyone recommend me a model for say around $300

Best radio for aviation would be a scanner. Most will cover general aviation band 108-136 but youll want military and other aviation as well which is in the 300-500mhz range too. I cant recommend a specific scanner, you’ll have to research for what type of scanner you want, plenty under $300. At

I want to eventually get a kx3, but meanwhile instead of waiting for the fully loaded kx3 including the 2m, I'm wondering if I should get the Elecraft 100 watt amplifier and get an Icom IC-480. Would the kx3 2m perform better than the Icom?

The KX3 has a great receiver, and excellent transceiver all around. Would work great with the amp however, you're looking at a lot of money for the setup.
I've never heard of an IC480, do you have the correct model?

IC -V80! I finally got it right.

The capabilities of the elecraft 2m option would be different than the V80. The 2m board has only 2.5w bit does have pL tones etc to do repeaters and costs about 300 dollars because it’s all mode so it can do ssb cw am and fm so can do weak signal stuff on ssb with a beam antenna and cw. The v80 wouldnt be able to do these. I think the best option would be get the v80 to have separate radio for repeaters and simplex... save money... I have rarely used 2m for anything but repeaters and as walkie talkie so thats what i have done.
