The Biggest BOOMS in Rocket History

  • Space is hard. There’s a reason we use rocket science as a benchmark for anything extremely difficult.
I for one champion all things space and eagerly await every single upcoming space event. But, in order to move forward, we’d better look back at some past failures and see what we’ve learned from them.
What better way to do that than to watch some of the biggest boom’s in spaceflight history?
BUT as always on my channel, this isn’t just a random compilation of crazy explosions, nope sorry…
I’ll be teaching you what went wrong and other random facts about each mission so we too can learn while we watch some fireworks….
After all, mistakes are only mistakes if you don’t learn anything from them.
That being said, let’s see some of the biggest booms in rocket history!
    12: SpaceX landing attempts (2015)
    11: SM-65 Atlas, 6/11/1957
    10: Titan 1, 12/12/1959

    6: Juno II / Explorer S-1, 7/16/1959
    5: Ariane 5, 6/4/1996
    4: Proton / GLONASS, 7/2/2013
    3: Titan IV / A-20, 8/12/98
    2 Delta II / GPS IIR-1, 1/17/1997
    1: N1 / L1 ZOND, 7/3/1968

30:12 The N1 explosion released 2.5 TJ of energy, the RAF Fauld explosion in 1944 released 8TJ of energy, and the Halifax explosion in 1917 might have released as much as 12TJ of energy and the shockwave was so powerful that it was felt 130 miles away in Cape Breton, and stood as the largest man-made explosion until the nuclear bomb, the N1 was a big boom but it's far from the largest
That's actually insane though, I knew the Halifax explosion was huge, but it kind of puts it in perspective when you realise that it was equivalent to 4 or 5 moon rockets exploding at once

he probably saw what people assumed, which was that all the fuel exploding would have released close to 7 Kt of TNT. But later investigations revealed around 85% of the fuel did not explode, leaving it at less than 1 kT

    • @corpsimmons575
      @corpsimmons575 Год назад

The entire rocket contained about 680,000 kg (680 t) of kerosene and 1,780,000 kg (1,780 t) of liquid oxygen.[58] Using a standard energy release of 43 MJ/kg of kerosene gives about 29 TJ for the energy of the explosion (about 6.93 kt TNT equivalent).
      Thats from wikipedia.
The N1 is so big its explosion was larger than an entire muntions ship exploding.

Thank you for posting this very entertaining and informative video. You definitely got my respect for keeping out anything that had a loss of life. Like you mentioned they must be treated with great respect to those who where tragically lost and to the families and friends they left behind. That really was a beautiful thing to do. Many years ago I got a chance to fly to the Kennedy Space Center. I was in a CH 46. I got to see one of the space shuttles up close. They where an amazing piece of equipment. But of all the things I had seen at the KSC there is one thing I will never forget. As you walk through the building you will see on the wall plaque’s for every mission. Each one has its own mission patch with the launch date just above the return date. When I got the the Challenger it very sadly was missing the return date. It brought me right back to High School when I was seated at my desk with great excitement watching the launch live. It truly was a tragedy.

Well, this is entertainment. A moment before he was saying the only mistake is one we don't learn from. Then omits the biggest mistakes. From that point on I wasn't thinking of watching as you wouldn't learn much. I am probably in the wrong place as I rather learn than be entertained.

Jason Simpson I dunno, I think ones with casualties would have been fine in this video. Probably much more fitting in this video than many others they get shown in. Tim would treat them with respect and dignity and allow their sacrifices to be a piece of education. If I died in a rocket I’d be upset if it wasn’t included, if I wasn’t dead anyway.

Well, no one was IN the rocket, but lots of ground crew and engineers were killed. So many there wasn't really enough left to continue the program.

Everytime seeing a rocket explode it just makes me sad that all the man hours and hard labor to build the rocket went to waste. It's still impressive that even though there were huge failures we still did not give up launching rockets.

It’s not wasted time if you learn something from it. That’s what happened with all of these launches. If you try something and it blows up, fix that problem and try again. If it still blows up, fix that problem and try again. Keep doing that process until it doesn’t blow up. Then you have a good (whatever you’re making)
