    Just my two penneth, just remember that when you are dealing with folks that have a unique brain like Dom, a true legend, that brain works in ways that might seem weird to other people, and those people that obsessively pursue something, be it music or painting or any art, might not always end up being the easiest folks to deal with. It's often a byproduct of a genius artistic brain, which Dom absolutely has.

      Dom stood his ground and acted on how he felt. You can't blame him. You can't expect producers not to care when you take a tune of theirs and use it to your own purposes. Take the Redeyes and Goldie incident, for example. You think that hurt Goldie's reputation and exposure? Yeah. Dom is a legend of a producer, genre pioneer, still releasing bangers with a style none can touch, like it or not. His views on Twitter and whatnot and his persona are a different discussion for those who know him. Don't like them? Leave them be. You can enjoy the music regardless.

      @@STRANJAH I see what you mean but plenty of people remake lots of classic and influential music on yt. There's great ones by point blank music school for example, remaking the tracks of bjork and massive attack to teach producers how it was done. I've got lots out of remaking tunes i like myself in hip hop. But it's a shame some see it as an infringment of their creation. Big ups for atleast trying Stranjah, love your vids. @@oTgNinJAFTW Do you think PBMS haven't approached and discussed the remakes with Björk or Massive Attack / their representatives first? A lot of content on YT is just plain copyright infringement unless the stuff has been put out under creative commons. There seems to be either a huge culture of misunderstanding, ignorance, or just plain not caring, to which, frankly, the whole modern Internet culture is to blame. It's like kids downloading mp3's back in the day and thinking it's OK / fair use / whatever. What you think is fair use or "right/acceptable" is not the same as what it is from a legal or even respectful pov.

    • @oTgNinJAFTW

      @@testinggrounds484 I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree there chief. All art deserves to be free and all art comes from taking what came before it in order to learn the building blocks into making something new. One of the best ways to do this is by remaking tracks you like and just because someone posts their method as a yt video shouldn't mean it gets taken down. The laws of copyright and intellectual property are becoming so strict that soon you won't even be able to play a melody somebody else has played or be inspired by other artists (literally has happened in court numerous times already). Not saying art shouldn't be original but people dissecting a track to learn something about creation shouldn't be discouraged, it's not the same as claiming something is your own. But this is the pathetic state of copyright in 2023, and it's only going to get worse.

    • @testinggrounds484
      @testinggrounds484 Год назад

      @@oTgNinJAFTW I'm not saying art does not deserve to be free nor denying how previous art influences the newer generations of makers nor that it should not influence. What I am saying is that artists and their works should be respected. While one can argue that copying, imitation, or even stealing, is the highest form of flattery, there seems to be this growing culture of plain lazyness where everything needs to be quick and free, without the sweat, blood, and tears - to slightly exaggerate.
      People are more than free to dissect any track for learning purposes in the privacy of their own home / studios, but as soon as you take a remake of a track like this online, especially linked with some marketing, it shouldn't come as a surprise that it might result in negative reactions, and most likely from the original artist if you have followed what's been up in the last few years. Now, if Dom & Roland does not want his track to be used in this kind of way, or if he should get a wee mad when he is not asked first, he has every right to do so. Do people have the right to be disappointed? Of course. I am not defending the way he reacted. I do however think I understand well why he reacted so strongly although would've been great to see the track (or any of his other tracks, for that matter) dissected by the man himself.

      @@Positive_Tea And you know about how things went back in the day - how? And who else did Dom "steal" from? If you're referring to The Winstons, then point out your finger to the whole damn industry (pun not intended). The whole topic of sampling both in hip hop and edm has been going ad infinitum, so either you're a kid without any knowledge of street and dance music history, or just picking up low hanging fruits for internet points. Either way, not very convincing arguments. Bowie wasn't unaware of his track being sampled by Dom. I love Dom + Roland in general and Can't Punish Me and it's various remixes are some of my favorite dnb tracks of all time, but I can't think of any legitimate reason why an artist would discourage this type of tutorial on a 20+ year old track. Assuming Stranjah is telling the truth and not just trying to avoid RUclips algorithm censorship (possible), Dom comes off as kind of a jerk here (I don't think it would be an issue with his label making decisions against Dom's wishes since I think he has controlled his own label for quite a while now).

    • @STRANJAH
      @STRANJAH  Год назад +8

      Yeah we’ve gone back and forth and I’ve heard him out and he has his reasons not to be happy. And to be fair I have done some research and this whole RUclips covers thing is a bit of a grey area. Technically from what I understand you do require permissions granted from labels or artists. But most labels don’t bother taking the videos down because it’s a net positive in terms of promo for them. So it really comes down to the artists preferences. It’s a learning experience and I’m still trying to figure out how to navigate it in the future as not all artist are reachable, if I wanted to ask for their blessing.

      @@STRANJAH Legal debates about intellectual property aside, I wonder what, in Dom's own mind, he considers proprietary about the track. And if he were Daft Punk, would be object to the same treatment being done to Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger showing how it's essentially Coke Bottle Baby sped up with some FX.
      Especially in the case of dnb, where I imagine a large percent of the track is sampled from music Dom didn't create himself. What specific filter sweeps or bass EQ settings does he think are State Secrets, that you unlocked by pure happenstance but is too dangerous to unleash upon the world at large?
      I don't see what justification he has to try to prevent you from showing the world what techniques he used decades ago to make music. You'd think he would welcome this type of thing to not only show how ahead of the game he was back then, but also bring his music to a new generation of listeners. Compare that to guys like Sub Focus or yourself (and many other dnb pioneers who were in the forums since back in the old days) who painstakingly try to teach the craft to anyone interested.
      All of my music (admittedly nothing as good as Can't Punish Me) I consider free for the world, and I'd happily send DAW project files to anyone interested enough to want to remix. This situation feels like Lars Ulrich circa 1998 and makes me lose a lot of respect for Dom, unfortunately.

    The irony of Dom & Roland complaining about you disclosing his "production secrets" when the track in question has a highly recognizable sample of another artist as it's centerpiece... Either you're comfortable with artists leaning on each other's work and techniques or you aren't. Pick a lane.

    Great decision, Stranjah, but what's with this thumbnail and the word banned in all caps? To my understanding, you did not reach to Dom & Roland before doing a video and remake of one of his most classic and well-known tunes. Do correct me if I'm wrong here. Frankly, I don't quite fathom how you did not come to think how taking a tune like that and including a sample pack with the purpose of marketing it could lead to this kind of result, especially with someone like Dom. Don't get me wrong, I think you're doing a great thing with your channel and the tutorials and all, but this one was just handled badly, plain and simple. It does not help that this current vid, especially the thumbnails and scrutinizing the Bowie sound, comes off as passive-aggressive, especially when you talk about Dom in past tense at the beginning. He's been putting out quality stuff to this day as you later on mention as well. Dom could have definitely handled his reaction much better in many ways, but I am still surprised how so many people do not seem to understand what caused his reaction and where it stems from. Instead, they just attack him with ad hominem taking things to the discussion which have nothing to do with the whole remake shutdown.
    To add, anyone trying to explain how the Doc was cool with the 'Shadow Boxing' tutorial so Dom should've this and that - no. Two different geezers with two different mentalities. Doesn't work that way.

      @@testinggrounds484 Nobody is being bullied here. Dom made a choice to take a certain stance on this issue and people are well within their rights to have an opinion about it. All of your many replies to everyone here seem like you are taking this way too personally for someone who isn't Dom or directly connected to Dom.
      Stranjah was asked not to do the tutorial, and he didn't. But you are still mad. Stranjah was respectful, he spent the first minute of the video telling everyone what a great artist and technical producer Dom is. But you are still mad. Stranjah pinned a comment asking everyone to be positive and respectful to Dom. But you are still mad.
      Honestly you seem a bit unhinged Dom.

      @@jeffsymons7084 Jeff, please - spare me of the trolling, will you? "Mad", "unhinged"... come on.
      I'm not referring to comments just in this YT video's comment section, but to people's reactions in general regarding this effing storm in a teacup. Neither am I denying that people cannot have an opinion about this, whatever it might be, of course they can. If you're civil and respectful about it, great, but if not - in kind. A lot of comments have not been that.
      Talking about taking things personally, you might want to look again at people's responses here and there if this comment section is your only source of reference. Yeah, sure, there is Dom's initial reaction which was a full on knee-jerk emotional backlash, but that can be understood to some extent (except for the unnecessary dis towards Stranjah and their samples). But then there's a lot of Stranjah's fans going apeshit and start attacking Dom - over what? His initial reaction, regardless of his posts afterwards where he explained his response and apologized his primal reaction? Over him not wanting his track being used in the context he explained? Asking Strahjah not to do the remake? Yeah...
      Stranjah did not proceed with the tutorial. Great move from his side, kudos. Of course it would've been cool to see the end result but, at least in my opinion, his approach was wrong to begin with. The aspects in his video I was referring to still do give a slightly vindictive, p-a vibe. During the first minute you're referring it slightly feels he talks about Dom as he's some has-been but might be that's just me, then. I do hope it's unintentional and he does talk about him later on as well with praise (not that he would need to). That's why I asked him about it above. Well in my rights, wouldn’t you say? I admit I could've had a less pressing tone, perhaps. Still, seems like if one's not in the bandwagon of rolling one's eyes over the remake being cancelled, harshly dissing Dom, and not giving critical feedback to Stranjah about this, one's not in the group for popular kids.
      Anyway, taking part in this whole topic has been a complete waste of time. Nevertheless thought I'd reply to you out of courtesy. Going to leave it here.
