To explain that janky interaction in the Tweek/WaDi set at 20:32, after WaDi mashed out of Tweek's monkey flip, he tried to go for jab, which is frame 5, but Tweek went for up-smash, which is also frame 5. Tweek had a little bit of frame advantage (seemingly just one or two frames, I can't tell which since I'm watching on mobile) from the grab recoil animation that let him get that kill.
Looking at Ultimate Frame Data, Diddy's fastest move is jab at frame 3, so I think all characters _can_ shield after a side-b grab release, but since the opponent will be mashing to get out, the opponent's likely to buffer something else.
Honestly a pretty fascinating moment in the set to analyze, since imo it's pretty easy to forget you can mash out of most command grabs in Ultimate, and the interactions that come out of that are fairly unexplored.

@@InfinateRadiant In a game with so many characters that each have completely different playstyles, movesets, and framedata, it’s completely illogical to say that some characters aren’t better than others. Tier lists are just meant to measure the order and extent of this. Just because because any character CAN win doesn’t mean that some aren’t more likely to do so than others.
Maybe 1 day Wadi will actually practice as opposed to just goin to locals to train bcuz man he is already top 20 maybe he can go even further (i also wanna see Wadi go R.O.B. vs diddy)

Mewtwo looks high tier until he gets 3 stocked by a Diddy Kong... Then you realize his disadvantage is bottom 10 in the game.

shadowball at ledge like that is actually jump or drop only, mewtwo can react to you choosing an option and throw his ball, catching attack, neutral, roll, or even an unsafe hang on many chars.
Fun fact :wadi never train, since ult came out he never ad a switch he just brought one for streaming when quarantine was out

This character has a kill confirm at like 60% off a half charged projectile with disable. All mew2s need to do it it makes the character way better than it already is.
I just wish Mew2's Nair dragged down a bit more consistently and at least his back dash tail hurtbox was smaller. Everything just clicks besides that.
If Wadi optimized his combos out of up air he could go far. His neutral and game sense are so good.
Up air is the one thing Mewtwo has that combos into just about everything, falling up air and rising double jump up airs are kill confirms but Wadi never goes for them. He might not be confident is a tournament setting to pull them off maybe that's why they are hard to do
Yeah WaDi's combo game with M2 definitely could need some optimization. I think in general that most M2 players need to work on their combos. Like M2 has such a deep pool of high damaging combos and yet most M2s only use the basics like d-tilt fair or shadow ball dash attack, which aren't bad combos by any means, but definitely not optimal.
Fast fall fair also combos into almost everything
The Snake matchup isn't that bad for Mewtwo surprisingly.

Only aerial confusion is true. Its 0 frame advantage at 0 but goes up a frame after a few dozen percent and caps out at +4 around 120

You have practically no confirms off of grounded confirms other than reading a double jump with up air or tech chasing afterwards. Confusion has 6 frames of advantage at 140+%, so any character with frame 1 escape options (grenade, pt switch, cyclone, etc.) can't be confirmed into fair since fair is frame 7.
@@takumagoto6702 But in reality many frame 1 escape options are ineffective against confusion fair though. Like e.g. Snake's granade doesn't do anything (not even trade) or Marth/Lucina's up-b just misses and leave them wide open afterwards. I think the only characters that can truly always escape confusion fair are only Bayo, Luigi and PT.

I think a few things in Mewtwo's kit prevent him from being high tier, mainly his options at the ledge, his massive hurt box, and how light he is. I feel like a lot of people see people do well with characters and think the character has a chance at being high tier, but don't take into account that this game is incredibly well balanced all things considered and you can do well with a large portion of the characters. I feel like Mewtwo's disadvantages immediately bar him from being considered a high tier, and if he is a high tier he's gotta be at the very bottom. I've played Mewtwo as a second since Smash 4 and he's so much worse in this game without anything in return for what they took away. I'd be surprised if even Wadi thinks he's high tier.
edit: Also his disadvantage state isn't very good. He can get away because of how floaty he is and his weight, but because of how floaty he is he's pretty weak to frame traps, and his size doesn't help either. He has means of getting out of disadvantage like side b, but its definitely bad.
True but his neutral and advantage state is kinda insane with disable stealing stocks at 50% and he also has one of the best edgeguarding in the game imo with b reverse shadow ball to position to back air or side b to switch direction mid air and his floatines and double jump makes him better at edgeguarding.

Mewtwo’s disadvantage/hurt boxes are what keep him from being top tier imo….his advantage, damage output, kill throws, projectiles, command grab/reflector (the same damn move lmao), and disable setups are all top tier tools

I don't think that Sparg0 doesn't know how to DI M2's d-throw, it's just that M2's d-throw is so fast and thus almost impossible to DI on reaction.

Mewtwo is definitely not a high tier, he has tools but he gets hit approximately four times and dies to the majority of the cast due to his hurtbox and weight. This game has been out for nearly three years and to say that we need more optimization is crazy. Everyone who assumed Mewtwo would be good at launch has stopped trying with him due to him being so much worse than 4 Mewtwo

Mewtwo beats snake IMO. And does decently vs Pythra. That being said, he is absolutely NOT high tier and it is MUCH more than the tail hurtbox holding him back from high tier.
I love Mewtwo. He’s my second favorite character. (After Brawler.) His combination of power, speed, and presence just does it for me.

I love mewtwo but he's a mid tier character, he got a lot of strengths but equal amount of weaknesses. Paper weight, tall and big, tail has a stupid hurt box, a really bad blind spot behind him if you cross mewtwo up he cant do anything but retreat, very floaty plus his double jump being the way it is makes his disadvantage horrible. Hes a glass Canon character, when he's on a roll he can destroy most characters but it only takes one mistake for you to die at 64 percent.
@eric Spencer i play mewtwo since smash 4, just to say im speaking from experience and not just out my ass. A common flaw i see when people rank certain characters is that they view them in a vacuum, tier list are influence by who the top tier are and what other characters are you comparing them too. This game is extremely well balance for having 80+ characters making it hard sometimes to rank without looking at the big picture. Mewtwo does not fair well with most top tiers and when u compare him to some bottom of high tiers i dont believe he belongs there. IN MY OPINION some bottom high tier characters are: terry, ike, steve, cloud, sheik, corrin, ryu, hero to name a few.
Mewtwo still is a big body light character with a horrible disadvantage, he is combo food and most kill confirms will work on him because he is big. He struggles to get of the ledge because he is big body and his double jump is odd, teleport can help but that is only a mixup and you can always be punished. His tail is not a true disjoint so not only is it hard for him to outrange certain characters but he also doesn't benefit from trading cause he's light and trust me it happens often. Does he have strengths plenty but his weakness keep him im check, you have to constantly out play your opponent cause one mistake can be fatal and it just sucks tbh.

There's no way M2 is high tier lol. His weaknesses are just too debilitating and exploitable. He has interesting options and he has good kill power, but half the cast can kill at lower percents, with better frame data, AND they don't have the worst possible combo of big and light. NO other character has this terrible of a combo of those things. Every other character with a big hurtbox has the weight to live to the 150s consistently. That's just too big a flaw for him ever to be a serious threat at the highest level.
People call him a glass cannon. Pikachu, Fox, ZSS, and others are the glass cannons of the game--light but with actually insane offense, damage, and kill power. M2 is a glass handgun at best. All the fragility, only part of the offense.
Not calling him bad. He does have plenty of strengths. He's a solid mid tier. Just not a high tier.
@eric Spencer Mewtwo's fair is frame 7 not 3. But that's obviously still stupid fast for a move as broken as M2's fair. And I agree with everything you've said. I don't think ppl are aware of M2 true potential. Like I don't see how M2's offense is any way inferior to Pikachu's, Fox's or ZSS's.
I'm not going to weigh in on where I think Mewtwo lands on the tier list, but the idea that Mewtwo lacks damage or killpower is, with all do respect, ignorant.
His moves average out to over 10% per move, and he has quite a few, very reliable combos out of his main neutral tools. Mewtwo racking up to 60-70% off of one neutral win is commonplace. Even stray moves, like his Jab, which is disjointed and a solid Frame 5, deals a clean 25%, and can even reach as high as 50% in ledge trapping scenarios. His offensive pressure is incredible, with Shadow Ball's low endlag, high stun, and Mewtwo's high speed giving ample options to pry open defenses, Fair which is -3 on shield, Dtilt which is safe when spaced, and Nair which has vague crossup potential. Not to mention, Confusion acting as both a very large disjointed command grab and reflector, means he can brute force approaches against defensive plays.
He's got strong edge guarding, incredible ledge trapping with Shadow Ball and Dsmash, spammable low-end-lag Smash Attacks, and combos into kill moves that can frequent stocks under 100%. And, not to mention, landing Disable is effectively a guaranteed stock mid percent up.. which isn't nearly as hard as it sounds.
Really, as far as offensive prowess, the only thing I think he's lacking is OVERTLY strong kill throws on par with Ness. Though, he does indeed have kill throws.
Again, I'm not going to debate on his placement. If you think he's Mid tier, that's totally fine, I'm not commenting on that, but if he's mid tier, it's definitely NOT because he's lacking damage, killpower, or pressure.

But there's one thing I can't quite agree with. What do you mean M2 is lacking overtly strong kill throws like Ness? How could you possibly put the words "Mewtwo" and "lacking kill throws" in the same sentence when M2 literally has the 3rd strongest back throw and the 3rd strongest up-throw in the game? You could even argue that M2 in a sense has better kill throws than Ness. Because unlike Ness M2 is not as much reliant on positioning to take stocks with throws. Similar to Ness M2 can kill very early when close to the side blast zones with back throw, but unlike Ness M2 can also kill very reliably from anywhere on the stage with up throw. So I don't think M2 needs stronger kill throws, any stronger and his throws would be absurd.
But otherwise I agree with everything.
@@BaumM2 Well, I'm not sure how his kill throws rank exactly, but his general ability to kill with throws is the weakest it's ever been. UThrow kills, but on average around 140%, whereas Ness' BThrow will kill midstage around 125% on average-- quite a bit stronger, and not that's not even accounting for near ledge scenarios.
Mewtwo's Bthrow IS suitably strong in at ledge scenarios, but it's far more sensitive to stage positioning than Ness's bthrow is.
And, while his throws may kill earlier than other characters, outside of Dthrow-DI in-Fair, he lacks any kill confirms with throws, which many other characters do have. He also lacks tech chase setups with them.
Just as an example, Chrom's Fthrow sets up for a tech scenario, which means he can set up 50-50's and find kills at around 100% with them, despite having far weaker throws on paper. And while I didn't mention this initially, his grab range (especially dash grab) is frustratingly low (which while balance isn't concerned with lore, it's extra annoying given that the PSYCHOKINETIC CHARACTER has poor grab range..).
I wouldn't describe his throws as weak by any means, or even average, they're a high point, but it's something I think he'd get a looot of mileage out of if they were on the same level as Ness. A bit of a tangent, but even if they just increased his grab RANGE, I think his potency would still shoot up considerably, given how often he can force shields.
