    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Julianne (Julia Roberts) finds Kimberly (Cameron Diaz) in a restroom and tries to convince her to reunite with Michael.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
A woman realizes that friends can be lovers, but now has to convince the friend in question in this romantic comedy. Michael O'Neal (Dermot Mulroney) and Julianne Potter (Julia Roberts) were romantically involved in college, and after breaking up, they have managed to remain close friends. For years, Julianne and Michael have had a pledge that if both were single when they turned 28, they would get married. Shortly before her 28th birthday, Julianne is lamenting the sad state of her love life when she gets a call from Michael, who announces that he has important news. Julianne is convinced that Michael is going to ask her to marry him, and she is crestfallen when he announces that he's engaged to Kimmy Wallace (Cameron Diaz). Kimmy seems like the perfect woman for Michael; she's sweet, pretty, bright, and adores Michael, and her wealthy family is just as fond of him as she is. But now that Julianne has realized how much she loves Michael, she's not about to give him up without a fight -- and isn't afraid to fight dirty. Julianne's uneasy ally in the battle for Michael's affections is her friend and editor George Downes (Rupert Everett), a cheerfully out-of-the-closet homosexual who is not prepared when Julianne asks him to pose as her boyfriend.

This scene is a lot better than what the trailer would have implied. Kimmy just stays inside the bathroom stall, if I remember correctly.

Kim is the hero of the movie and Jules is the antagonist. Jules grows up a lot, she apologises and wants them to be happy together. It was unusual to have the main character be the antagonist at this time, but it worked really well.

This film has such a good message which implies that you are not in control of the choices of others. It also shows that just because you love someone does not mean you are going to marry them.

Summer Yeah I sadly learned that. And its true. Just bc you love them doesn't mean they will automatically love you back the same. You can't force somebody to love you it's their choice if they want to be with you. And also we sadly don't want somebody until its too late.

Julianne had been best friends with Michael for many years and even agreed to marry each other when both if them turn 28. Unfortunately, Michael had informed her that he is engaged to Kimmy Wallace. So that is why she is so upset that he broke the promise.
I feel more pity for Julianne rather than Michael and Kimmy. This is why men and women can't be just friends. For me if you're friends with a guy and show that you really want to spend a lifetime with him then you get married to him.

I love it. Julianne is the protagonist that you can't help but root for, but when you think of this scenario in real-life terms, it is quite depressing to think that manipulative, selfish people should be the ones to get what they want in love & life, and not the ones that are just trying to love genuinely without pushing others over. And you think things might go her way too, just like they often do, but here the sweet girl gets her man, just by being her. Even when the odds stacked by typical romance movie plots and reality are against her :)

I haven't seen this movie since I was a little girl. I thought Kimmy would turn out the bad person at the beginning like most, but the whole elevator scene with her and & Julianne, I liked her right then and there. Julianne tried to one-up Michael and it backfired on her.

I watched this movie last night, and was rooting for Kim from the start. Personally it doesn’t matter how long you’ve known the person, if you know, you know, as long as you’re happy. It’s just my preference to wait at least three years for marriage in my future relationships, but if you’re happy and know what you want and where you stand, go for it! My great aunt and uncle only dated for two weeks before getting married and they’ve been happily married ever since with three kids and a granddaughter. So yeah, I really didn’t see a huge problem with Kim and Michael not knowing each other long.

Cameron Diaz portrayed the character so well. Although her character is a static character that remains chipper and controlled throughout most of the movie, there are some really raw moments where her character's strengths and emotions can show . I understand Julia's character is the more "Entertaining" one because she's dynamic and obviously crazy and unstable throughout most of the movie but the contrast between them both is so entertaining . both of their strengths are highlighted and you can see and feel both perspectives . the way the script was written was so pretty and i can understand how they both must feel and how much it must hurt both of them to love the same man.

I mean the point of the movie was that Michael was pretty much in love with her the entire time he knew her, and then "got over her" and met Kimmy. I mean looking back at it, the whole Kimmy relationship is a lot shakier than I realized. When I first watch the movie, I really did believe in Michael and Kimmy's relationship. The older I get the more questions I have. And the more I realized Michael is the true "villain" (since people say Jules was the villain). I mean he has this 20 year dropping out of school so he can pursue his career as a sports critic. Marries her because he has this weird complex around getting married by 28 (it was also weird he basically proposed to Jules. Because 28 is not old even by 90's standards). Supposedly didn't even get over Jules until the day before his wedding. I mean why even propose if you are still in love with your ex let alone plan a wedding? He was out here reckless. I no longer believe his motivations to marry Kimmy were honest.
Also something must have been going on with Kimmy as well for her to marry a man that spent most of his time talking about another woman that he is clearly in love with. II guess she is 20, but still.

I think he was into Kimmy but he still didn't really know her and had too much history with Jules to just forget about her. I think Kimmy was just the woman to help him get over Jules. I think what made him finally stick to Kim for good was when he told Jules how he asked Kimmy to marry him and she immediately said yes and didn't keep him on the back burner like Jules did. He still loves Jules but was ready to start over.

  • @Salhy22
    @Salhy22 3 года назад +16

I re-watched the movie recently after so many years and for sure my opinion remains the same: Kim is too good for him, for both actually. Jules was wrong in every aspect for trying to steal Michael over Kim... but in reality you can't steal someone over anybody: you have to be two to dance the tango and I'm sorry but it wasn't just Jules who kissed him, he kissed her back. Both have to be incriminated on that one, not only Jules; heck Michael even more than Jules at this point given he's the one committed to marrying Kim.
This competition stuff or having to get out of your chest some feelings felt for your ex before moving on with someone you're already committed with, well that's pure bullshit: you may love few times but you only fall in love once, and the fuel of this love finds its source on the simple existence of your SO. Besides, that fact has to be inherently reciprocated, or else that's not being in love, that's not even romantically loving someone at this point... well, sadly enough Kim truly loves Michael, way more than he does to her, and she's frankly too good, giver, sweetheart and such an incredible selfless human being to be with someone like him.
Toward Jules so-called feelings, she's hugely mistaken herself on that one: I call that possessiveness over something (yep something, not even someone, a total dehumanization on that one), something you basically can't possess any longer, which turns to make you fall into a huge obsession. In Michael's part, that was an old obsession mixed with still existent feelings over a woman whom had never reciprocated his feelings, said obsession he didn't cure of yet... well in both cases that's everything but love. Actually people should really stop labelling every intense emotions they might feel for someone as being love: love is selfless on its own essence and being in love will always be reciprocated at the same degree, meaning the reciprocated need to preserve the other’s well-being at any cost. Well, I don't see any of those things between these two and let's not even talk about the lack of respect and consideration for the other’s feelings and desires.
Bottom line, I wish Kim would've decided to get the hell away from these two toxic person, and found a real person loving her and selflessly caring for her well-being as much as she would've for the said person. Damn, she deserved so much more than that crappy ending, with a man disrespecting her so much until kissing someone else the day of their wedding. When you truly love someone, your feelings for that person will be the last thing you'll doubt about: future, lifting up on your own expectations of wishing so hard to be able to make your SO as happier as possible and, maybe not feeling being the enough for him/her ect ect. Those are the legitimate doubts you may have to face... certainly not the fact of your partner being the one for you. That's truly and healthily loving someone and when it's the real one that's how being in love is... poor Kim, she deserved so much more than that.

Finally all the little things come together and I saw a glimpse of her in his car. I got stomachache or is it a chest pain. But I couldn't sleep for weeks. Plus, Kimmy was only 20 and dropping out of school to be with him even though she didn't really want to. Just red flags all over the place. I don't understand why they had to get married so quickly? She was so young and wanted to finish school, he was still half in love with someone else, it didn't make any sense for them to get married that quickly.

But I still think it was rash and unnecessary for him to marry Kimmy so quickly - they could have waited a year or two and taken time to figure out if this was really right for them. She still had a year of college to finish, and he still had feelings for someone else. I could understand the rush if they were 40 and both wanted to have kids before time ran out or something, but with her being 20, they literally had all the time in the world. There was no reason to rush. Staying engaged for at least a year would have given him time to sort out his feelings for Jules and decide whether he really wanted to marry Kimmy for the right reasons. You don't marry a rebound, which is what it looks like Kimmy kind of was.
