Got myself tobaco version SC-550. Can't stop playing it. I played it right out of a box until my back started to hurts. Bautiful guitar. It came tuned, polished, perfect. Yesterday oredered a tele ;)

+Gillette Wilkinson I have the Slash-style SC-550. Plays really great, though I upgraded the s**t out of it (electrics, tuners, Hardware). Best guitar I can imagine for under 1000 bugs.
I have strong G.A.S. (guitar acquisition syndrom) for the tobacco one, to swap the pups for some humbucker-size P90s ;-)

The guitar scraft joint head is actually not a bad thing. This makes the neck stronger and less prone to break if you drop the guitar for exemple. Yes this makes them save wood too but in the end it is a good design.

    • @markedone6667
      @markedone6667 8 лет назад +13

+Marc-Andre C +1 that. Never understood why people hate scarf joints. It is form a mechanical point of view simply the strongest way to have an angled headstock.
I also don't understand people bitchin about LP Styles with scarf joints/volutes because its not like Gibson does it.
Even though the big G has a reputation for broken headstocks...

Unbelievable guitar. Mine arrived yesterday. Setup is better than any other guitar I've bought (online or in-store) and only the most minor blemishes (a couple of tiny speckles of black paint on the side). It's stunning, it plays and sounds great. Just a note on the tone - I always worry when people say something sounds warm, because it normally means muddy. But this is warm from the mahogany but with clarity from the brighter pickups (than what's typical for a LP style guitar).
If you're looking for an LP style guitar, I can only think of two reasons to buy anything else - 1) You don't like the looks (weird, but I guess it's true for some people) or 2) you have lots of money to spare and are looking for a custom/boutique level guitar

I'm kind of tempted to pick up something like this and incrementally upgrade it.
Start with stuff like pots, caps and wire and later change out the pickups and possibly the tuners. Provided it doesn't have any issues with the neck etc, you'd theoretically end up with a pretty kickass guitar for not a great deal of money.
Edit: Lol. I commented before watching the whole video and just reached the part where you said you wouldn't bother upgrading it. I still kind of like the idea of having a project guitar, but I see your point.

Just got this today. I bought a B-stock, I see nothing wrong with it. Thing sounds GREAT. I could not believe how good it sounded. Tuned it up one time and it has stayed in tune. Pups sound fine to me. I see no need to change anything on this guitar. I have music to back up the things I say, and this guitar is great! It looks beautiful to, I am the type that could care less how the finish was for 200 dollar guitar, as long as it sounds good. Well, this thing looks great and sounds great. The action was nice and low right out of the box, I didn't need to tweak the neck at all. I already want to buy another guitar from them. this is NOT helping my GAS at all.

I used to be a gibson, fender, gretsch snob. I admit it. But then I decided to try one of these Bentons, and now my last “snob” guitar is for sale. I replaced all of my guitars with the appropriate Benton’s, and had enough money left over to buy my daughter two Benton’s, and pay off her car... and no one can tell the difference in my sound our play. Even me. Thank you Harley Benton for your quality guitars, and you for your channel. (P.S. - That little wire on the bridge is to keep the screws from loosening up and rattling. My epiphone’s bridge had the same thing. My gretsch 5420 didn’t, and the rattle was annoying as hell. Put clear fingernail polish over the heads to stop it. Hey, it worked?)

Awesome video, just bought one of these guitars, I can honestly say you are 100% spot on about this guitar. For the price it is unbelievable, really can't understand why Gibson can charge 8x more for a les Paul, it's ridiculous. The tone of this guitar is awesome and the sustain is unbelievable. If you want a les Paul style guitar but don't want to pay there ridiculous prices, get one of these, best guitar I've ever had...

I also have to add after reading the comments, why would anyone want to change the pickups in this guitar? They sound AWESOME! Weren't people listening to you? And as far as the body & neck pieces; it doesn't affect the tone at all, most Gibsons are 2-3 piece bodies, & not only does a 3 piece neck save on materials, & utilize what would normally be scrapped, THEY ARE STRONGER AND A BETTER DESIGN. Thanx again for the great review Henning

WOW! I went back and forth, and back and forth, on the lead section of the SweetChildomine from the Benton and the PRS, and I hear no difference at all, none. Now I am not in the room, and I know that YT does make a compression difference, but from what I hear here, a 200 plus guitar can equal a several thousand priced guitar...wasn't expecting that! I think the amp definitely plays a difference here.

I have a Chinese AFD copy that I replaced the stock pups with Duncan Slash pups and I don't particularly like them. As I stated in your track vid of this I think this HB NAILS the Slash tone! I've come to realize that where a guitar is made, how much it costs, or what name is on the headstock does not matter. What matters is how it looks, how it sounds, how it plays, & how well it stays in tune. Paying $2-$3k for a guitar is a waste of money & saying that Chinese made guitars are crap and US made guitars are better is a waste of time, period! I have now purchased 7 HBs and they are amazing and unbeatable in price for value. I'm not big on pedals, but I love your guitar review vids. Thank you Henning

I upgraded just about everything on my HB SC450 (PUs, tuners, nut, electrics, shielding, bridge, ...) and it now costs almost as much as a low-end guitar that comes with all those parts. More if you count the hours spent working on it. Works well now, but I never intended on spending so much time and money. You get what you pay for.

There is a really good alternative to the expensive Seymour Duncan Slash Signature humbuckers:
    ToneRider Rocksong (100euro/set)!
They are too Alnico 2 overwound PAFs and they sound amazing in my SC-550. The Alnico 2 Magnet gives you that smooth top end which defines Slash's sound. Hennings Wilkinsons (with Alnico 5 magnets) just have too much bite in the neck, but the Slash Signature or the rocksongs will fix that.
I would suggest swapping out the Neck for a Rocksong and keeping the Wilkinson pup in the Bridge. Very versatile and even less expensive.
BTW, I kept my Wilkinson,s they are great in one of my other guitars.
I also swapped out the wiring (50s-Wiring - no more mud when turning down the volume), Tuners (Gotoh Magnum Lock) and Hardware (Faber parts - these are vintage correct and give better sustain). Now I have a Slash Signature clone for under 500 Euros. Absolutely worth it.
Great review, Henning. i would suggest to have a look at the Jet City JCA22H head. Its a 300 euro 20 Watts all-tube amp, designed by Michael Soldano. But I guess there are a lot of reviews waiting to be done ;-)
    See you in the musiker-board

You sure that you operate the straplocks right? You have to compress the spring on the straplock while you are pressing it onto the guitar's strapholder and then release. I have the same type on my H. B. DC-Custom and it works like a charm.

""I've been warned by some company"
I am really sick and tired of the two main guitar manufacturers.
They are very busy with things around voodoo, myth, legend, also around overpricing and quenching the last dime out of buyers, are so much into trademark protection they even react to youtubers wording, etc.
Only thing they do not care about is building flawless guitars as well as for keeping their companies in good financial health.

Just bought another Harley Benton (the CST you also reviewed), hope you get credit for my purchase, not sure I did it right. Anyway, thanks for your reviews, they're so good.

I trust your reviews. I saw your reviews on prs se 245 and you were spot on...sounds and built better than 95% of any guitar I've played at any price point...and I am a pro level guitarist. I'm really curious about this one. I also have expensive American made guitars...but find the cheaper ones are starting to get better...sound just as good. They may not have thick maple cap...but who cares. It's pride and ego that makes us want to feel special when we have an expensive American guitar in our hands versus import...with some exceptions...

Sam Cowell Sam, I just had a chance to plug it in for the first time this evening. Action was nice out of the box. The jatoba fretboard seems a little dryer than standard rosewood (but that’s out of the hands of the manufacturers with the CITES regulations) but some lemon oil helped with that. Still have to get used to it feeling a bit different than all the rosewood fretboards I’ve ever played over the last 22 years. Tuners are okay. They do their job and don’t jump from what I’ve seen. The finish is good. It does have some imperfections on the binding where the neck meets the body. But I bought it as a B stock so I don’t mind and it doesn’t affect the sound or playability.
As far as the sound; clean is pretty much non existent I would say. I think these pickups are hotter than the other SC550 models. But on the gain channel; Woooo! It rocks so awesome. This is going to be my axe for the songs that are just straight up distortion. And it sounds just like a Les Paul should sound.
All in all; the guitar plays as well as guitars that cost 3 to 4 times more. And it plays a whole lot better than a Gibson Les Paul tribute I recently tried that was $1100. That thing had horribly sharp fret ends.

After watching this review I bought one and its really cool. I have to tell you that mine is a photofinish many of them are absolutely identical. As far as the scarf joint, they are many different types of scarf joints and at this angle the glue if properly done is stronger than the wood in the neck.

Dude that is the most joyous review i have ever watched, so thanks for the nice 35 minutes ... i sincerely agree in each point of judgement you have came up with ...im gonna have one of these ones in left handed version yet i would like to know better about the Vintage V100 in comparison to this one, i have one strat from vintage and i am to say that i'm in luv with its color palette, and the fret board design however i need a guitar now that i can feel the low end fidelity, as we have heard here when you have played your PRS back there, of course i do not expect such a broadness in resonance but could you compare V100 LP and this HB in that regard and give us a solid verdict on that matter. thx, best ps : this one has rose indeed, corrected.

I disagree with you about upgrading the pickups. I have a Vintage V100 AFD Paradise (essentially the same guitar), it too was loaded with the Wilkinson pickups. I played mine for about a week with the Wilkinsons before I decided to upgrade. I installed all new pots, caps & Seymour Duncan pickups. It made a world of difference in the quality of sound. Also, about the strap locks that come on this guitar; it's a great design that is poorly executed. Hennessy strap locks are the same design made with quality materials. I've used & trusted them with all of my guitars from the V100 to my $3000.00 Les Paul. I've never had an issue with them.

When I check youtube your channel is the one I look for first, you have a great sense of humor and you give great reviews. I think I have seen every video you have, even for stuff I would never buy.. just because your opinion matters and it's good to see the uses of products that I would never even think of (loop switchers come to mind in this respect) Keep up the great work. That spring steel on the bridge is also on Tokai guitars and can sometimes cause a buzz. A replacement bridge is fairly cheap though so it's not a big deal.

You know, you might have convinced me to get the SC-Custom one. Similar to this but without the maple cap + veneer, I think? I dont need such fancy stuff since my Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus has those covered. As a bedroom player I dont need a high end guitar, just one that is well set up, playable and tuneable and if I am to believe you it seems like HB's higher end side have those covered. Good sound is a plus too though that can always be improved with cheap no-name-but-still-good brands like Iron Gear or Entwistle if the stock ones are not to my liking (I want high output).

Hey! You convinced me to buy this guitar and i just received it
A few things have changed since your review :
First the logo has changed it's not the double spiky thing it's more like 4 parrallelogramms now
Second The strap locks : they changed them completly I guess and it seems to work pretty well on my guitar
Straight out of the box the guitar has an awesome action and is playable (just had to tune it )
no fret buzz except a little bit on the open D and G string ( you hear them if you are not plugged into an amp )
The tuners seem good , no problem tuning it.
The intonation is nice although it is just a little bit off on the G string
I'd say the sound is as good as my epiphone explorer korina, i prefer the epiphone sound for distortion (metal) but the harley benton one for cleans and more classic rock sounds, then it's preference
complains : There are only little details about the paint etc ...

+IIIvpIII That's correct. I just got my SC-550 PAF and it's much better than the one I previously had and returned. The new inlay (looks better) on a headstock, straplocks that actually works and nicely levelled and polished frets.

So you have the amp-tops upstairs where you play and the cabinet is down in the basement with a mic in front of it and that signal gets up to you again so you don't actually destroy every bit of good neighbourship? That is seriously amazing...

Guten Abend Henning. I just wanted to thank you for your great videos. I hesitated to buy a Harley Benton 6 months ago and bought an Epiphone Les Paul, which I've hardly played due to not being happy with the sound. Now, due to your videos, I've taken the plunge and bought a Harley Benton SC-550 in faded tobacco burst in an attempt to get that vintage LP sound. It's on a plane to the UK as I type. Thanks again.

+EytschPi42 Hi Henning. My HB SC-550 arrived last week, 4 days after being ordered from Germany. Out of the box I was very impressed: physically the finish was superb; the wood on the front is very well matched and the grain is beautiful. The back looks like two pieces and the scarf joint on the neck is barely visible. The frets were finished well and the hardware is beautiful and expensive looking. Not a mark or a blemish in the finish.
It was almost still in tune. I decided to plug it straight into the amp. The neck pickup is very smooth and warm whilst the bridge offers warm but edgier tones. I dialled a bit of dirt in and the classic LP sound came loud and mighty. I'm really impressed by the Wilkinson pickups.
There's no comparison to the Epiphone. The pups on the Epiphone were very abrasive and lacked warmth and I disliked the feel of the neck. The HB is more like the classic LP.
I love it. Next purchase Harley Benton HB JA-60SB Vintage Series.

About the coffee party when you reach 15,000 subscribers I thought I would do the math for you. At 8 ounces per cup of coffee that would be 10,000 Pots of coffee at 12 cups per pot of coffee. At 1 cup of coffee beans per pot that would be 10,000 cups of beans as well. Just do a thank you video, it's much more cost effective. Or do a giveaway of something special. Cheers Henning, you rock. What is the main difference to the SC-500 Vintage Series (in black)? I can only find comparisons between the SC-450plus and the SC-550. Can anyone explain? Would be great.

    • @NisargShaikhofficial
      @NisargShaikhofficial 5 лет назад +2

Hey probably a little late but the main differences are 2 rather interesting things from what I could find when deciding myself between the 3. The 500 series had a number of flaws to them. HB used to use Wilkinson pickups for a majority of their products but over time the original manufacturer had a decline in quality when mass producing the pickups and HB decided to move to Roswell pickups which have retained the quality so far. For some reason, HB has decided not to change them for the 500 Vintage but the other two have Roswell now. That is probably the biggest difference and the other difference was the build quality. HB has some serious issues over the manufacturing of the 500 series guitars from what I could find and what made me avoid them altogether. They would come with mostly faulty tuners, bad body work and other minor problems, mostly easily fixed. This is probably the reason why they never gained much popularity and the 550 is just a much better choice if one wishes to get a nicer experience. The 450+ uses similar pickups as the 550 but the differences are minor and mostly in terms of aesthetics. The sound is a tiny bit different but the 500 in between them just feels like it doesn't belong there anymore. The other two guitars have changed and distinguished themselves for the good of the SC series and the 500 just seems out of place today in a systematic order where you'd expect the 500 to better than the 450.

Your opinion means a great deal to me.I am watching you a lot.I am poker player ,that is trying to find a hobby ,distraction ,to keep me sain.I found that in guitars.I have Classical guitar (my first purchase) Ortega ,I have Acoustic one Ibanez PF 17 ,and I bought not long ago Boss katana MKII and yamaha pacifica. It s good ,but I am not impresed ,it s twingely if thats even a word.So I was dooing reserch for 2 days ,and MAYBE vintage is 5% better guitar ,I honestly dont know.It seems wilkinson hardwere is a bit better that Roswell humbacker ,and other basiclly no name hardwere.Bit I am gonna listen to you and put an order for Benton SC550.I am at Montenegro ,and I found local distributer ,that will sell it to me for 310 euros ,and also Look at frets ,if need be level them and polich ,other stuff like nut ,action ,intonation I can do my self. For 310 euros I ll got some lutior work on it and ship to my door.
Thank you sir ,and I was going back and forward from PRS 245 standard(550e) ,Vintage V100(400 ish e) and HB 310.I cant justify spending double on PRS.y disadvantage is my country is at a lock down and I cant actually go and try gutars ,so I ll buy HB.And later on ,maybe in 7-8 mounts PRS SE 24 custom blue vhale.. Thats the plan anyways...
So again thank you for pushing me to finaly made a desision ,and all the best to you sir!!!!
    ps.
YOu shoud have over 1 000 000 subs.Much much worst chanels than you have more subs ,but thats life...Its an old video ,you probably wont read this comment ,but if you do my e-mail is enisdesevic@gmail.com,I would be happy to pay you for 20 min call ,to talk to you about guitars ,and what shoud my next purchase be.
    Kind regards
    Enis

I kust bought the same Harley Benton that are showing.. I wanted to talk about the strap locks.. Just like you showed they pop right off like you showed.. But!... For shits n giggles i took them and put a leather strap on them n tightened them down and snapped them on and guess what??? They worked! You cant pull them off without unsnapping them! For some reason when you put and lock in the strap with the screw it changes the tension or pressure on the fitting and makes it work. Please check it out the way i said...

my strap locks on my sc custom work fine..however the thumb screw is made out of pot metal(cast aluminum) and the one on the lock on the bottom of the guitar breaks very easily if you set the guitar a little too hard..easy fix is to replace the original thumb screws with steel screws...they are a metric #6 with 1.00 thread.i put on one that was 12mm long with a washer and its perfect

Just got one of these. For the money -its a great guitar!
    HOWEVER!!
The colour of the fretboard was pale. Almost the same colour as the body! Looks weird. And as with all Harley Benton guitars - i've had to fret dress this one too. 3 dead notes.
    But for £220 - can't really complain!

Hello, I would like to ask your opinion. I'm undecided whether to buy this guitar or Vintage V100 AFD. They seems very similar except for the pickups (in the Vintage is type WVHZ).
Do you think the price difference is justified? Which is the best? I recently started playing for fun and I would not spend much (my level is low actually).
    Thanks in advance
Ps. Sorry for my english :D

I am really undecided because I am novice. Please somebody help me to make a decision.
I really like this guitar but when I saw reviews of Vintage v100 AFD, I was blown away by the sound. And then I read the reviews they were all highly positive. With this review of SC-500 I have the impression that still Vintage has more body to it's sound. Now please anyone tell me if I am wrong or right....it's really getting harder for me now as I am continuously searching started from Rockburn, Westfield to gear4music to Thomann and so on. And now everyday am loosing reserved money on pizza and burgers lol :D

Gracias!

You left Squire/Mexican/Epiphone off your cheap starter goodness list? Why??? Actually I know why...because the extreme base models often suck out of the box. Seriously, I dig that you are standing up for Harley Benton. I own two, they are solid enough, with tweaking, legitimately good 2-3 trick ponies to have in the guitar stable. Certainly for the cost. A reliable baritone, semi hollow/ported LP style thing, Gretch hybrid-y thing, p-90 thing, tele with a humbucker thing, whatever can't do any harm! More-so-better with a professional experienced setup, minor luthier spit and polish and fret dressing (most of which can be done by someone with an interest in guitars slightly beyond the average I suppose), couple clutch tonal/bridge/nut/pup upgrades maybe for fun? Because all this ends up costing pennies on the dollar for the amazing mojo dripping custom shop instruments they are trying to emulate. All that's to taste, but there's no accounting for taste. lol.

Thanks a lot for the awesome review mate! You rock! One question, besides the color scheme I noticed that the two different versions of the SC-550 models on Thomann website also use different pick ups. Paradise amber uses Wilkinson WHHBZ pickups while the Faded Tobacco Flame version uses Wilkinson WVC/N-B. Do you think the guitars will sound different because of the pickups?
