I have found the Hornady Outfitter 180 Grain with the GMX bullet to be my do all. I do have so Barnes that are TTSX or something. I am gonna try the ELR-X on deer but the GMX is trustworthy and I don’t hunt past 250 yards
Ooof I've had bad luck with bullets exiting out the side of water jugs in the past so I would've be nervous to shoot them on the tailgate of my truck... LOL I'm a huge fan of a bullet that holds together so like the TTSX or a couple of the bonded options out there. I've shot a whitetail doe in the neck with the 143gr ELD-X in 6.5 Creedmoor and it didn't even pass through so that's a bullet I don't use anymore... Great video brother!!!
If the Barnes 30 cal 200 gr LRX impacted the jugs, direct bone or soft tissue at around 2700 fps or slower, than it would retain basically 100% weight and have the large expanded petals attached. They only break off at very high velocities but only after the bullet has fully expanded and basically dumped all energy. But if still going fast enough (above say around 2800 + fps), the petals can break off but generally not till about 20 inches or more penetration. The all copper shank with never break down and will continue to penetrate, tumbling causing great damage as well. That LRX will also expand clear down to a minimum impact velocity of 1500 fps. So, shoot them as fast as you want into direct heavy bone or soft tissue at point blank range, or shoot them long range and expand clear down to 1500 fps. Best of both worlds for a hunting bullet. Fast, rapid expansion yet deep penetration no matter what. Contact much bone with a cup and core like an ELD or Berger and they implode. Especially at higher velocities then failing to penetrate very well. If not using a Barnes for hunting, then please use a bonded lead core bullet. Totally depends on how far you will shoot an animal, what your velocity is, etc., but lets say if you will shoot no more than 500 yards, then there are plenty of bonded lead core bullets and other brand lead free monolithics that work great. But a cup and core like a ELD-X or M, Berger, etc., is nothing but a target bullet. Sure they can work some of the time, but they will be terrible just as many of times if you shoot them enough on game like elk. There is a reason other companies have spent millions of dollars and countless hours making a better hunting bullet that is consistent on various animals or shot placement. A cup and core ELD or Berger is what it is. No matter how cool the marketing looks or how much fan boys hype them up, they are a light duty bullet that reacts very inconsistent on various shot placements, bone or no bone, different velocities, etc. They need at least 2000 fps minimum for consistent jacket splitting to expose the lead core to mushroom slightly, yet at higher velocities or contacting bone they can come apart, jacket core separation and fail to penetrate consistently. If not using a monolithic, then bonded bullets are much better for hunting big game. Other monolithics (lead free bullets) also need 2000 fps to expand. However, with inventing and 35 plus years’ experience, Barnes will expand way faster and down to much lower velocities than any other lead free bullets. However other brand monolithics like GMX or E-Tip if shooting game at closer ranges or above a minimum impact velocity of about 2200 fps, they can work very well also. If not using Barnes LRX, TTSX or TSX bullets, I personally like the Federal Terminal Ascent or the older TLR. For a jacket lead core bullet, they expand down to low velocities like the Barnes LRX, but also retain good weight. Very good weight compared to other lead core bullets. Not the weight retention like a Barnes but still very good. If you want a bullet that looks picture perfect with 100 percent weight retention for high velocity shots but still expand down to 1800 fps, then I recommend something like the Barnes 30 cal 165 gr TTSX/TSX or 200 gr TSX, etc. Barnes expand off of hydraulic force, not a force against the bullet nose. So, they can control very easily what velocity they want each bullet to expand down to and what velocity the retain 100 % weight up to. They can answer that any of that if you want to know. There are ALOT of Hornady fan boys out there, but if you shoot enough game (and not just small whitetails) with an ELD or other cup and core jacketed bullets that come part, you will see the inconsistent performance. There are way better choices out there. An ELD is the same thing as a Berger, Sierra Match King, Barnes Match Burner, etc. but with a red plastic tip. It is what it is. No matter how much Hornady markets it, no matter how cool they make it look, they are nothing but a simple cup and core technology. Not a true big game bullet that works on a wide variety of game animals and wide velocity range. Can they kill a deer or even an elk? Sure, but you can also shoot one in the head with a 22 LR. It may work a couple of times, but it definitely is NOT the best choice. When I spend countless time, dedication and money spent on tags, other gear, etc. I want the ONE thing that actually touches the animal to take him down quickly and to do the job consistently. The bullet (and shot placement) is what kills. Not the expensive gun or fancy NON melting tip high BC bullet (that all manufactures proved bunk anyways). BC is only part of the equation if shooting past about 500 yards or so (with most cartridges. If you shoot or hunt less than around 500 to 600 yards, then BC has ZERO to do with you and considering a hunting bullet. The bullet has to be in the air long enough for a higher BC to start to help retain velocity. BC does not kill. It only helps you to dial a couple or so clicks less. Who cares how high of BC it has if it just implodes on an elk shoulder any ways? A Barnes LRX (and some TTSX's) or Federal Terminal Ascent and TLR, will work consistent at point blank ranges and also expand down to a way lower velocity than a ELD or Berger. The bullet has to do the job when it hits an animal. BC is not terminal ballistics and BC plays WAY TOO BIG of part into some guys bullet choice consideration. As mentioned, BC is only part of the long range game and bullet choice. If shooting 600 yards and less (most cartridges), then BC is nothing you should think or worry about.

I see some validity in point blank testing as I was on a cow elk hunt where I would up with a 50 yard shot. I was trying Nosler Accubond 165 grain from a .30-06. Don't recall velocity but believed it chrono'ed somewhere around 28-2900 fps. Bullet left an impact hole I could put my fist through. No exit hole and never did find the bullet or any traces of it. In the past I'd used 165 gr Partitions at 2900 fps and would get pass throughs on broadside shots at 200-250 yards. Perhaps at longer ranges the Accubond would hold up, but certainly not at closer ranges. I had switched from the Partition to the Accubond after seeing the front of the Partition come off after taking a mule deer at 550 yards. A problem I thought only the loudenboomer magnums had at close ranges. Although that Partition was on a quartering away shot it still penetrated all the way through and came to rest just under the hide on the opposite side. Rather than switch back to the Partitions (since I can't leave well enough alone) I've gone to the 168 gr Barnes TSX. So far it smacks down mule deer like Thor's hammer. As for the test method, seeing jugs on the back of your tailgate was a cringe moment. Might I suggest some saw horses and some plywood for an inexpensive table next time? For the chronograph, standard practice is to place it at least 10 feet from the muzzle to eliminate erroneous readings from muzzle blast. It's simple enough to calculate the actual muzzle velocity based on the distance from the chrono, which for that bullet is about 6 fps additional. Well within the shot-to-shot variance you will see.
Must have been a tough elk. I shot 2 antelope at 240 and 250 yds with a 165 gr AB in a 30-06, then a good sized mule deer buck at 150 yds. All pass throughs and the bullet worked okay enough but I was disappointed in the expansion of the bullet, I thought it could have opened a little better or something, I've had much more impressive performance with the 180 AB in a 30-06. I also took an antelope with the 165 gr AB in a 308. Similar performance. I didn't think it was soft by any measure.
I use the exact same bullet. I was getting roughly same type of penetration and weight retention. Velocity was actually the same. Right at about 3000. I did my test at a 100 yards and had 100 percent weight retention. I've shot a couple elk with these bullets also. And both times the bullet ripped through the animals. Barnes is the way to go for elk.
First, these bullets are built for two entirely different applications. Second, neither is built for point blank range. The only thing this "test" was useful for was "how to fuck up my truck with wet copper and lead."
On my 8th birthday my folks got me a wrist rocket. Me and my buds lined up our pop cans on the bumper. First shot…….right over the tailgate, right through the back window of the pickup. I got the belt. Hahaha!

The ELD-X has been a failure in my tests as far as a sturdy hunting bullet goes. It's impressive in flight but wish it would turn into a Partition when it strikes home. Hornady needs to bond it.
Got about 40 or so 200gr ELD-X given to me. Ive only tried one load with em, but I dont think my rifle is gonna love em. Bout a 2.5" group at 100yds over 74gr of H1000.
I shoot 0.15 moa groups with eldx at the range…. But thats all it is, a range bullet. I shoot 0.45 moa groups with barnes, but they are hunting bullets and i kill elk with them!! Big difference!
Great concept and demo however to validate this test you really needed same jugs not milk jugs plastic thickness and amount of water density are different
Hornady eld-x is for slower mv under 3000 or great for long distance being its softer.. barnes built for speed and bones/tough animals up close deep penetration depending on mv can be shot out further!

I like the 20gr vmax myself. Of coarse a whitetail drops instantly from headshots, but, ive actually had a 20gr v-max impact behind the shoulder and exit the other side of the animal at 80 yards. Never lost one to date. No idea of BC, weight retention, etc. 3000 fps isnt the fastest, but it works fine 😂
Awesome! I live and hunt in interior Alaska and have been reloading and shooting Barnes TTSX for the past decade or so. Remington 700 bolt action rifles with130 gr TTSX in .270 with IMR4350 for sheep, black bear, caribou and 180gr TTSX in 300 H & H with IMR4831 for bull moose, grizzly bear. I like to exit holes for easier tracking and usually with Barnes TTSX there is great weight retention and an big exit hole. I shoot about 12 to 25 TTSXs each week, so at $30 per box of 50 the price is not bad either.
Barnes was also Lighter bullet so It would have higher MV. Barnes are penetrator bullets ad seems best for bigger game. FYI I am a Hornady guy but do see a place for the Barnes.
Should you expect good results with an unbonded soft lead bullet at 3000 fps? I kind of always thought to keep them below 2800. My impression is that if you are going to impact at high velocities a mono bullet is better but if your going to hit at low velocities then go lead. For me I’m one of those stupid People that still tries to get close to game so I can reasonably predict my impact speed. Also accuracy or BC is not important if you actually get close. I guess the more technical the equipment is the less technical the hunter has to be, so goes the trend as I see it anyway.
Yes, you need to shoot at least 100mts to to replicate some sort of hunting scenario. All projectiles should get maximum expansion hitting at muzzle velocities, that doesn't tell you anything, WE need to see what happens to the projectile at hunting ranges, full expansion, half expansion, no expansion, that's the test of a hunting projectile.
I can't believe you shot a gun at water jugs on the tailgate of your truck. Those things are expensive. That's what your youngest child is for, they can stand on the ground away from the truck and hold the jug. Geesh, some people.
You would be surprised. Alot of other factors affect speed like surface area and metalurgical properties of the bullet. Thats why you can get two bullets with the same mass but one is 100ft ps faster
Considering the ELD-X is a long-range bullet, designed for rapid expansion, at medium to lower velocities, I think it did very well in this test! Of course a monolithic bullet is going to do better at pointblank, extreme velocity range! If you plan on hunting elk at 10 feet, maybe use a bow? Any idea when you will be doing the 200, or better yet, the 400 yard test?
I am pretty sure I heard the Barnes LRX was designed to expand a lower velocities, they may have made the petals thinner to accomplish this. The TTSX or the standard TSX may be the ticket. I would call Barnes to ask about petal thickness and if the TTSX and TSX are tougher bullets that will retain the petals when shot at a MV of 3,000 fps. I have been sold on the Barnes bullets for a long time, deep penetration, excellent wt retention, the petals when spinning at 200,000 rpm because of the rifling cause massive hemorrhage, and there are no lead pieces in the meat.
I've always had great luck with hills next to natural springs, and also high lookout areas. Many people have had luck on sandbars on rivers, but I have no experience with it.
I love Hornady V Max for varmint. With that said, for deer Hornady is the only brand that's unimpressed me. The ELDx out of my 6.5cm was really underwhelming for terminal performance. I almost lost a doe because they don't bleed much at all on the two I killed. Never used them again. I used Hornady SST 139 in 7mm-08 and I didn't get a pass through on either of the two deer I killed at less than 100 yards. I might give them another chance in a different caliber but the ELDx is accurate but trash for performance.
Your conclusions are floored. The hornady will dump all of its energy into the game, but the barns fail to do this and exit still carrying a lot of its energy.
kr2sm that’s a lead vs copper assessment, lead is much better and dumping its energy . Unfortunately for people in California like myself we no longer get to use lead . You have to shoot for shoulder bone and hope the shock is enough to disrupt the vitals.

I eat what I kill and lead is not what I want in my diet. People living in lead free states really need to understand the functionality of solid bullets....you're not going to get that softball sized exit wound. What Barnes bullets gives you is extreme performance and a healthy meal. Shot placement is key with ANY style bullet, therefore there's no substitute for range time. Put a Barnes in the boiler room and enjoy the lead free protein.
There's benefits to both lead or Copper especially if ur hunting and want to protect the fur ur trying to get more penetration because ur cartridge may not have great penatration in certain game animals u may be trying to get through thick bone maybe ur going for best accuracy if u can't hit it it won't die I'm personally a big fan of Hornaday especially the sst bullets and I think it's fair to test long range ammo far away too cuz the bullets r not built to expand at peak speeds
Penetration isn't ANY end all be all.. If your blowing through stuff, then the bullet is applying less shock than its capable of.. You need that happy medium .. Notice the increase in expansion size of the ELDx vs the barnes.. Lost all petals on the first jug is NOT good.. now your getting a pencil hole Wound channel
That barns is to hard, you need more expansion which causes destruction of the bullet to keep all the knock down inside the animals..the last thing you want on a hunt is pass through..
Not really a useful test.. These bullets are intended for long range, not point blank range. Determine what the velocity should be at 500 yards or so, and have someone load some rounds at that velocity and do this again. After doing so you'll have a much more realistic, true to life, result.
I've been involved with the shooting sports since 1968, I've been involved in the tv & movie business since 1979, clearly this person hasn't. You need to do full explanations, like if a 220 gr. bullet is going 3000 fps, how much of what powder might be good. Precautions are also a good idea, like not shooting at your or someone else truck. Your video shows a certain lack of knowledge that when to least expected, things can go wrong. Like perhaps blowing a tailgate all to hell, luckly that didn't happen.
Within 300 yards Barnes all coppers are going to be superior for penetration and wait retention. Hornady eldx will be superior past 500 yards for bullet expansion and penetration. If you do not know what range your quarry is going to pop out at or you're shooting in thick brush just go with the barns TSX unfortunately a lot of rifles do not like the all coppers

I see some validity in point blank testing as I was on a cow elk hunt where I would up with a 50 yard shot. I was trying Nosler Accubond 165 grain from a .30-06. Don't recall velocity but believed it chrono'ed somewhere around 28-2900 fps. Bullet left an impact hole I could put my fist through. No exit hole and never did find the bullet or any traces of it. In the past I'd used 165 gr Partitions at 2900 fps and would get pass throughs on broadside shots at 200-250 yards. Perhaps at longer ranges the Accubond would hold up, but certainly not at closer ranges. I had switched from the Partition to the Accubond after seeing the front of the Partition come off after taking a mule deer at 550 yards. A problem I thought only the loudenboomer magnums had at close ranges. Although that Partition was on a quartering away shot it still penetrated all the way through and came to rest just under the hide on the opposite side. Rather than switch back to the Partitions (since I can't leave well enough alone) I've gone to the 168 gr Barnes TSX. So far it smacks down mule deer like Thor's hammer.
As for the test method, seeing jugs on the back of your tailgate was a cringe moment. Might I suggest some saw horses and some plywood for an inexpensive table next time? For the chronograph, standard practice is to place it at least 10 feet from the muzzle to eliminate erroneous readings from muzzle blast. It's simple enough to calculate the actual muzzle velocity based on the distance from the chrono, which for that bullet is about 6 fps additional. Well within the shot-to-shot variance you will see.
Must have been a tough elk. I shot 2 antelope at 240 and 250 yds with a 165 gr AB in a 30-06, then a good sized mule deer buck at 150 yds. All pass throughs and the bullet worked okay enough but I was disappointed in the expansion of the bullet, I thought it could have opened a little better or something, I've had much more impressive performance with the 180 AB in a 30-06. I also took an antelope with the 165 gr AB in a 308. Similar performance. I didn't think it was soft by any measure.
No doubt!!! I could use some improvement in taking care of my equipment but damn!!! That's not to mention safety concerns! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
I use the exact same bullet. I was getting roughly same type of penetration and weight retention. Velocity was actually the same. Right at about 3000. I did my test at a 100 yards and had 100 percent weight retention. I've shot a couple elk with these bullets also. And both times the bullet ripped through the animals. Barnes is the way to go for elk.
First, these bullets are built for two entirely different applications. Second, neither is built for point blank range.
The only thing this "test" was useful for was "how to fuck up my truck with wet copper and lead."
Why bother shooting long range bullets at point blank range? How about at least a 200 yard test?

Most people don't shoot animals at the range he was testing it.
The ELD-X has been a failure in my tests as far as a sturdy hunting bullet goes. It's impressive in flight but wish it would turn into a Partition when it strikes home. Hornady needs to bond it.
Got about 40 or so 200gr ELD-X given to me. Ive only tried one load with em, but I dont think my rifle is gonna love em. Bout a 2.5" group at 100yds over 74gr of H1000.
I shoot 0.15 moa groups with eldx at the range…. But thats all it is, a range bullet. I shoot 0.45 moa groups with barnes, but they are hunting bullets and i kill elk with them!! Big difference!
Great concept and demo however to validate this test you really needed same jugs not milk jugs plastic thickness and amount of water density are different

Hornady eld-x is for slower mv under 3000 or great for long distance being its softer.. barnes built for speed and bones/tough animals up close deep penetration depending on mv can be shot out further!
Hey can anyone answer why ammo manufacturers Rip people off by not making the bullets to the powers they are intended to be. Rather they sell everyone water down weak ammo?
I like the 20gr vmax myself. Of coarse a whitetail drops instantly from headshots, but, ive actually had a 20gr v-max impact behind the shoulder and exit the other side of the animal at 80 yards. Never lost one to date. No idea of BC, weight retention, etc. 3000 fps isnt the fastest, but it works fine

I live and hunt in interior Alaska and have been reloading and shooting Barnes TTSX for the past decade or so.
Remington 700 bolt action rifles with130 gr TTSX in .270 with IMR4350 for sheep, black bear, caribou
and 180gr TTSX in 300 H & H with IMR4831 for bull moose, grizzly bear.
I like to exit holes for easier tracking and usually with Barnes TTSX there is great weight retention and an big exit hole.
I shoot about 12 to 25 TTSXs each week, so at $30 per box of 50 the price is not bad either.

Barnes are penetrator bullets ad seems best for bigger game.

Should you expect good results with an unbonded soft lead bullet at 3000 fps? I kind of always thought to keep them below 2800. My impression is that if you are going to impact at high velocities a mono bullet is better but if your going to hit at low velocities then go lead.
For me I’m one of those stupid People that still tries to get close to game so I can reasonably predict my impact speed. Also accuracy or BC is not important if you actually get close. I guess the more technical the equipment is the less technical the hunter has to be, so goes the trend as I see it anyway.
Yes, you need to shoot at least 100mts to to replicate some sort of hunting scenario. All projectiles should get maximum expansion hitting at muzzle velocities, that doesn't tell you anything, WE need to see what happens to the projectile at hunting ranges, full expansion, half expansion, no expansion, that's the test of a hunting projectile.

You would be surprised. Alot of other factors affect speed like surface area and metalurgical properties of the bullet. Thats why you can get two bullets with the same mass but one is 100ft ps faster

Considering the ELD-X is a long-range bullet, designed for rapid expansion, at medium to lower velocities, I think it did very well in this test! Of course a monolithic bullet is going to do better at pointblank, extreme velocity range! If you plan on hunting elk at 10 feet, maybe use a bow? Any idea when you will be doing the 200, or better yet, the 400 yard test?

I am pretty sure I heard the Barnes LRX was designed to expand a lower velocities, they may have made the petals thinner to accomplish this. The TTSX or the standard TSX may be the ticket. I would call Barnes to ask about petal thickness and if the TTSX and TSX are tougher bullets that will retain the petals when shot at a MV of 3,000 fps. I have been sold on the Barnes bullets for a long time, deep penetration, excellent wt retention, the petals when spinning at 200,000 rpm because of the rifling cause massive hemorrhage, and there are no lead pieces in the meat.
I've always had great luck with hills next to natural springs, and also high lookout areas. Many people have had luck on sandbars on rivers, but I have no experience with it.
lead is easier on the dental work tho. I don't like copper in my burgers either.

I love Hornady V Max for varmint. With that said, for deer Hornady is the only brand that's unimpressed me.
The ELDx out of my 6.5cm was really underwhelming for terminal performance. I almost lost a doe because they don't bleed much at all on the two I killed. Never used them again.
I used Hornady SST 139 in 7mm-08 and I didn't get a pass through on either of the two deer I killed at less than 100 yards. I might give them another chance in a different caliber but the ELDx is accurate but trash for performance.

Your conclusions are floored. The hornady will dump all of its energy into the game, but the barns fail to do this and exit still carrying a lot of its energy.
kr2sm that’s a lead vs copper assessment, lead is much better and dumping its energy . Unfortunately for people in California like myself we no longer get to use lead . You have to shoot for shoulder bone and hope the shock is enough to disrupt the vitals.
I do not know much about Calìfornian law as I hunt in New Zealand, so I now understand.
I like to turn the vitals into mush, works every time.
@@appallokelley3207 Nope, put it right in the vitals and the hydrostatic shock does the rest. Been using Barnes since '98, by choice, as I don't live in a "lead free" state. I eat what I kill and lead is not what I want in my diet. People living in lead free states really need to understand the functionality of solid bullets....you're not going to get that softball sized exit wound. What Barnes bullets gives you is extreme performance and a healthy meal. Shot placement is key with ANY style bullet, therefore there's no substitute for range time. Put a Barnes in the boiler room and enjoy the lead free protein.
There's benefits to both lead or Copper especially if ur hunting and want to protect the fur ur trying to get more penetration because ur cartridge may not have great penatration in certain game animals u may be trying to get through thick bone maybe ur going for best accuracy if u can't hit it it won't die I'm personally a big fan of Hornaday especially the sst bullets and I think it's fair to test long range ammo far away too cuz the bullets r not built to expand at peak speeds

Penetration isn't ANY end all be all.. If your blowing through stuff, then the bullet is applying less shock than its capable of.. You need that happy medium .. Notice the increase in expansion size of the ELDx vs the barnes.. Lost all petals on the first jug is NOT good.. now your getting a pencil hole Wound channel

That barns is to hard, you need more expansion which causes destruction of the bullet to keep all the knock down inside the animals..the last thing you want on a hunt is pass through..
Not really a useful test.. These bullets are intended for long range, not point blank range. Determine what the velocity should be at 500 yards or so, and have someone load some rounds at that velocity and do this again. After doing so you'll have a much more realistic, true to life, result.

I've been involved with the shooting sports since 1968, I've been involved in the tv & movie business since 1979, clearly this person hasn't. You need to do full explanations, like if a 220 gr. bullet is going 3000 fps, how much of what powder might be good. Precautions are also a good idea, like not shooting at your or someone else truck. Your video shows a certain lack of knowledge that when to least expected, things can go wrong. Like perhaps blowing a tailgate all to hell, luckly that didn't happen.

Within 300 yards Barnes all coppers are going to be superior for penetration and wait retention.
Hornady eldx will be superior past 500 yards for bullet expansion and penetration.
If you do not know what range your quarry is going to pop out at or you're shooting in thick brush just go with the barns TSX unfortunately a lot of rifles do not like the all coppers
Eldx are not hunting bullets.. just target bullet construction.
