Jimmy is an amazingly genuine and kind guy. I took my son to see him, and when sitting for dinner I saw him sitting on the other side of the club with another musician before playing. I asked the waiter if I could buy him dinner, and the waiter came back and said he already ate, but would like to come thank me. He came over to a complete stranger, said hello and thank you, met my son (who had just started playing guitar), and then friggin STAYED THERE TO CHAT. Self-effacing and modest, and down to earth. What a class act.
It's hard to imagine how a human could be more of a gift to the world. Nicest, most talented guy around. Just a blessing to everyone who comes into contact with him.
I've been playing guitar since the mid 80s and kind of pride myself on being aware of even the most eclectic of players in all styles. I am almost ashamed that I hadn't been aware of Jimmy until just a couple of weeks ago when Emil Werstler said he was a big fan. Suffice it to say that my world has now been changed. I think it's the first time I've ever said that about a player before ... well, maybe Wes Montgomery when I first listened to him as teenager after Tommy Iommi, in a guitar magazine, said he was an influence.
From jimmys preference in running both p/u with bridge vol rolled back slightly to the way he wraps strings one under and then over top. Its exactly what i been doing for almost 30yrs. Super cool
Jimmy is a phenom, and a true gentleman, to boot. I have to tip my hat to the young man doing the interview. He gave Jimmy all the room he needed to put on a terrific tour. Excellent video!
I'm not surprised Jimmy was happy with his Japanese Tele purchased from Ebay after replacing the guts of it. Apart from the electronics, Fender Japan guitars are easily on par with Fender US, but priced more like Fender Mexico. FYI, unless a Japanese Fender has TX in its model number (eg ST62-70TX), it's probably a basswood body. Those with TX in the model number feature Texas Special pups & alder bodies. Some models also have ash bodies. Fender Japan are awesome!!
Jimmy Herring is a gem of a guitar player that I only just discovered last year! He's an awesome dude, and a killer guitarist and composer. Thanks for doing this PG!
Just found out about Jimmy Herring, not much exposure in Australia so I'm lucky to have stumbled across him on youtube, he's a Master Guitar Player and a seemingly humble, pleasant and genuine Human being. Would love to see him Live...
He is an amazing player! Glad you found him. In addition to his solo work which is phenomenal, I would suggest taking a listen to Widespread Panic and Aquarium Rescue Unit :)
@@michaelreis8266 three years later..but worth mentioning to check out Steve Kimock, and also Derek Trucks. Fits right in if you like Jimmy, but still different enough to justify seeking some good videos!
Jimmy is one of my biggest sources of inspiration the last ten years or so. I'll never be able to play anything like what he plays, but hey - pure inspiration is important, too!
Love this SO MUCH! Great gear ideas from a master guitarist/tonesmith! I’ve told you before but I’ll say it again…”JIMMY! YOUR’E THE MAN!” Thank you sir for the knowledge and inspiration!
Jimmy is absolutely right about humbuckers; they sound sweet with both on, blended with the volume controls … Which makes most PRS guitars, with their single volume control, frustrating beyond belief.
I think this is the best rig rundown ever. Usually it's just guitarists saying something like " yeah, this is a strat. This one is a tele. There is a Les Paul over there..." But you can see Jimmy is really into his guitars, even if doesn't remember what the second position in his Tele does.
Yes and thats his Charm! He's not a know it all guitarist prick (as many are) ..and is just simply a true genius when he expresses himself on his particular custom guitars & set up and i know he & Sir Alan Holdsworth were indeed "kindred spirits" as well.
Jimmy is an awesome guy. I actually got a lesson from him just before he left for GIT, while I was stationed in the Army at Ft. Bragg. He was amazing then. Hugely into Steve Morse at the time.
Yes, i actually know both Jimmy & Steve as yes, they're absolutely kindred souls and treat people no matter who you are, with much dignity & common respect..and espeially to each other! Godbless both Jim& bro.Steve and i really wish that both Jim & Steve both played together in the Dreggs..they would have turned the music world onto its axis, indeed!!(@@)
He seems to be this genuine, amazing person. He is so well spoken and gracious in his interviews, I saw him like at the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival in 17’ and he was unbelievable. Extraordinary musician.
"not an expensive guitar at all" I had to giggle at that a bit. I mean, yeah it's a reasonably priced guitar(especially if you're a rock star) but for someone like me, an American standard strat is definitely an investment.
I agree about it being an investment for me too. An Am. Std. Strat is still less than half the cost of a Les Paul Standard or a PRS Custom 24, so I can see where he's coming from.
Still, for a musician of his caliber this is a very inexpensive instrument. Awesome player, very humble guy. Much respect for him in every way. Of course we've seen him using PRS's too. A key to his instruments is the fact that he has a super technician working for him installing high end parts like Lollar pickups, custom fret work etc.
I sold it to him at a deal, cost plus - but the cool thing about Jimmy is, he wants to pay regular price that all players play.....very good guy and friend
That right there, is one hell of a nice guy, with no ego issues. Man did his own walkthrough, was as welcoming as could be, and smiled through the whole thing. Awesome.
Bill Delap did the fret work on my Les paul and it played twice as well as stock. It was amazing how much better it was afterward. I recommend his work to anyone.
thanks...he also did some of the most beautiful tandem guitar playing in one of the greatest bands I've ever seen, Phil Lesh's Quintet with Warren Haynes, phenomenal group
I saw him in ashland Oregon back in '99 with Jazz is Dead. Holy shit, had never heard of him and stood next to his pedal board the whole show. Amazing. And he was all over that volume pedal!!
