    I very much appreciate your extensive work on this project, it's been extremely helpful. I'm a very longtime user of LastPass and am serious about moving on as it's become very clunky and often a manual process to use as it's aged over the years. That and the fact it's been bought and sold twice now.

      @@calebmcnalley Thanks, Caleb. That's really good to hear. In all honesty, I don't even use Lastpass on my mobile phone, so I could allegedly still carry on using it for free on my desktop. However, considering I've been using it since it first came onto the scene, I think it's time to broaden my horizons and try something else, so this has come at a good time really.

    I chose Bit Warden and I'm really pleased with it.
    As you say in your review it is a very strong contender (The family pricing issue is now sorted - $10 py Premium, $40 py Family), it has easy import from Last Pass or any csv and Custom Fields
    as standard.

    I ended up going with Keeper after watching a few different RUclips reviews of the main options, not because of the you tube reviews, but because every single one of the others had hundreds of recent written reviews of their apps complaining about how awful they had become recently. Keeper was the only one that I looked at that didn't have all those annoyed customers. It is mostly okay so far on my experience, but some of the nuisance issues of having to log in repeatedly and it not picking up some custom fields in apps etc, as discussed in this video are certainly valid. I'm hoping they improve those items in future updates but they're not too bad to live with. Good video!

    I was a Lastpass user for 8 years, premium for the first 4 or so. But after the gradual stripping of features, the "one device type" change was the final straw. I migrated to Bitwarden and I'm loving it. Adios, Lastpass.

    • @TheB0sss
      @TheB0sss 3 года назад +1

      Yup, same, the 1 device type made me switch to bitwarden as well. The migration was pretty painless.
      I've actually found out it's more reliable on Android as well. Lastpass would very often not show the pop-up automatically whenever I tried to login to an app, bitwarden doesn't have this problem

    • @TonyRule
      @TonyRule 3 года назад

      @@TheB0sss Yep. I actually wish I'd switched sooner! Lastpass would often "stop responding" on boot of my phone and didn't work as well at detecting apps for autofill - I can't fault that in Bitwarden.

    Thanks for the video. I was down the rabbit hole looking for an alternative for LastPass, in particular something that supported Samsung DEX. After install, and uninstall, I had dismissed 1Password since it didn't work with DEX (same error as LastPass). So I then tried SafeInCloud, Roboform, Dashlane and Bitwarden... none of which were perfect. I was also kinda hoping for one that could have multiple URL's for the one entry (eg. Bitwarden). I was leaning in the Dashlane/Bitwarden direction when I thought I'd check out RUclips again before I test the likes of Keepass, Enpass, Keeper and Myki... thus I found this video... it made me go back and check again whether there was anything mentioning DEX in their forum... you had to turn on screenshots and turn on developer mode in DEX... now it works! Thankfully 1Password doesn't have some of the issues with local DNS entries and local IP Address URLs that Dashlane and Bitwarden did... I think I have my answer it is 1Password.

    Very interesting. I like you have been a 1Password user since it was released. I'm on ver 6.x and started looking around, as you did. I ended up downloading LastPass ( they also advertise in a few security podcasts I listen too ). The system is just disjointed when you change a password from one area it takes quite some time to propogate and the security system just doesn't seem to work. So, I think I will take advantage of the discount ( thank you ) and ensure I switch off password manager on Chrome and Safari, so I don't have bits of passwords all over the place. 1Password is more, but it just works more seamlessly than LastPass. Also, historically the support has been great.

    Thanks for doing all this research and then sharing it with us! I've been using LastPass for about a year now and am currently having trouble setting up 2FA (MFA). Turns out they have no phone support or online chat (I am on their Premium plan). If you want customer support it is by email only--and they take their time responding! How does this (lousy) customer support compare with the other PW managers you reviewed?

      Followup question: If I change from LastPass to another PW manager will I be able to migrate/export/import all the passwords stored in LastPast to the new manager?

    A small bit of information on who actually owns these services and therefore which legal jurisdiction they fall under would be quite useful info.

    My employer uses LastPass. I find it incredibly cumbersome, slow, and limiting. The LastPass brand (company?) appears to be owned by an investor or holding company that squeezes money out of LastPass and neglects the development. Based on my experiences with the products and support of LastPass and it’s sister company, I would never recommend them.
    OnePassword would be my go-to if I weren’t already a happy user of mSecure for the last ten years. It’s not a subscription model and has almost all the features shown in the video. You can choose your own sync service (such as iCloud, Dropbox, even mSecure itself.)
    Great video, Pete. I’m glad you touched on the import / export experience. A product that fails in this area can leverage that as a lock-in so users can’t escape.

      Your first point is actually the main reason I left LastPass after using it since approximately 2010; that, and two considerable price rises in about two years.

    Thank you! One question that bugs me, e.g. using lastpass with 2 factor auth, you lose your phone, all passwords are stored in the manager, you get prompted to send a disabling email for the 2FA but you can't read it because you can't log into the manager(that keeps your email's pass).
    Which in practice means that you should have at least two master passwords. One for the password manager and one for the email, if you use just a single email.
    Is my thinking correct?

    I have a question regarding 1Password and their emergency access feature. Does your chosen contact need to have a 1Password account as well? or is it just sent out as an email link to whomever you specify?

    Cheers, Thank you this break down. I have to agree the Keeper seemed slimy when I was trying to test it out. Glad I did not waste much time. Been using Bitwarden. It is a nice system but I keep having issues with auto filling passwords on browser.

      I briefly tried Keeper, but i just found it a little pushy just like Pete says in the vid.

    About Bitwarden, at this point you probably know already, but from a normal account to switch to the family plan, you need to first create an organization, and there you' ll find the option to upgrade to the family plan.

    I too have decided too look for alternatives for LastPass. I went back to an old favorite, Roboform and am impressed. I tried the following and was not too happy with them: Norton password manager, Bitwarden, Dashlane, Keeper, Nordpass. Running W10 and Samsung S20.

    Great video, Pete. I will take a closer look at Bitwarden and Dashlane. What are your thoughts about Firefox's built in password manager and breech notifier, Lockwise and Monitor. Thanks

      @@PeteMatheson Fair enough. But I really like the fact that Mozilla has had security and privacy as core values from the beginning (can't say that about Google, Apple, or even MS). As free options go Lockwise isn't bad. But as with anything you get what you pay for, so paying for a better password manager is worth it and in the cards for me! Thanks!
