  • Why is Ridiculousness seemingly the only thing that ever airs on MTV? Seriously, why is Ridiculousness always on MTV, filling the schedule all day every day? I take a look into the MTV schedule and answer why they play Ridiculousness so much. I explain how the channel’s scheduling works, why Ridiculousness works so well, and even an explanation from an executive at ViacomCBS as to exactly why MTV runs marathon after marathon of the Rob Dyrdek-fronted comedy format.

I feel like every network has this one show they treat like gods but treat their other shows like shit. Nickelodeon has SpongeBob, Cartoon Network has Teen Titans Go Disney Channel has Bunk'd, Netflix has Stranger Things, Fox has The Simpsons and Family Guy and MTV has Ridiculousness. I like Ridiculousness but other shows have their own fanbases, some of whom can only afford basic cable. So the whole "you can watch those shows on the app" is not a good excuse to mistreat your own shows. It's never been a good excuse for any TV channel regardless.

Hey, people should relax. Ridiculousness is getting more attention now, and people need to understand that even though MTV is getting into a lot of trouble for airing it so often, it's still doing fairly decently. So, why make it mess with a good thing?

MTV spams Ridiculousness: You keep watching it so it works for them. It's draws ratings.
CN spams TTG/Gumball: The network is incompetent & lazy. It needs variety...
    make it make sense

    • @benzj
      @benzj  3 года назад +5

Just because it works from a ratings standpoint doesn't mean they _also_ couldn't use more variety in their scheduling. The two are not mutually exclusive, and I do call out MTV for their recent lack of variety in their scheduling within the video. It is a problem that afflicts many channels these days, but the fact that the problem is widespread doesn't make it acceptable.
Thank you for watching this video!

    • @JPReckless2444

@@benzj i get that, but you make it seem like MTV gets the benefit of doubt. Just because you mentioned the problem with their schedules, doesn't lessen my point.
Yes, u mentioned it, but i feel you give Ridiculousness a free pass to oversaturate the schedule cause you're a fan of the show, which means they can get away with it. Where as CN gets criticized [rightfully so] & sometimes crucified when they do the same scheduling with TTG or Gumball. Both networks have the same issue.
All I'm trying to say is if that's your logic: Broad appeal, consistent ratings, ad revenue, "mtv keeps airing Ridiculousness, cause you keep watching it. you keep watching it, MTV will keep airing it." then the same thing can apply to CN's treatment with TTG and Gumball. They both not only popular & draw ratings. please don't say "it's not the same thing."
The only things that's different are the demographics & how both networks conduct their respective schedules, for better or worse. It's not just MTV & CN. It's the majority of television today. They ride with one or two shows that makes the most money nowadays because it keeps them afloat against streaming services. Don't set the rules for everyone, yet bend them for someone else to get away with.
& please don't say "don't complain. MTV is giving what YOU want." Like I said, Ridiculousness has a large fanbase & know what type of viewers they're attracting, same with TTG. You can't paint everyone in the same light who points out the obvious. U can defend Ridiculousness all you want, but not to point of shilling for them.
People have the right to constructive criticize the schedule just like you had the right "constructive" criticized Thundercats Roar...
Thank you for watching this comment.

I'm not disagreeing with your point here; both networks _do_ have very similar issues with regards to scheduling and variety, and they should both consider rectifying it. Based on my experiences with both networks, however, MTV's schedule tends to change far more radically and frequently than Cartoon Network's does, and, as I said in the video, I have reason to believe MTV will soon add more variety to the schedule, where as I'm more pessimistic about that outlook for CN.
(For instance, this week _Catfish_ and _Jersey Shore: Family Vacation_ have daytime marathons on MTV, along with three days of movies, with Ridiculousness receding to only about half the schedule, mostly on weekends and overnights; this differs considerably from the schedule I described in the video from back in April. By comparison, _TTG_ and _Gumball_ continue to comprise 65-70% of the schedule on CN this week as they have for a while, though _Gumball_ seems to have taken preference recently.)
Given the far greater volatility of MTV's scheduling, plus more consistent and respectable scheduling practices in general, even with the popularity of Ridiculousness; I feel my less-than-scathing assessment, comparatively, is warranted.
Do I think the amount of _Ridiculousness_ MTV airs is appropriate or acceptable, given its popularity? That's a different question that I wasn't really looking to answer with this video, but I'm not sure I'd necessarily agree that it is. It would take far more of an analysis of what a more ideal schedule would look like (and what would make sense) that is outside the scope of this video.

@@benzj that's fair... we can agree that both can & hope improve the schedules. Hopefully, both MTV & CN's new direction will change alot for the better. It's a wait & see.

I may also belong to one of those people who does miss MTV for being a freaking music channel, although the music variety mostly revolves around pop, rock, alternative, metal and experimental, but I also miss the olden days when it was a channel for surprisingly groundbreaking television animation. Beavis and Butthead come to mind because of how it defined a generation of disaffected youths with two teenage boys finding the weirdness in their otherwise mundane lives. Daria explored the follies of the teenage experience through a sarcastically cynical young lady's eyes in, of course, Daria Morgendorffer when she gets herself into these scenarios using her own dry wit to not take crap from anybody. Aeon Flux was magnificently fluid in its animation and dystopian world building. I could also bring up Celebrity Deathmatch, Clone High, Wonder Showzen, and Cartoon Sushi as equally fine examples of shows that defined what MTV was as a creative channel not only based on music but also based on branching out to the world of adult animation.
