Great job getting to fat mike and more punk rock bands. You should definitely do some more punk ska and reggae bands as well as some jam bands bassists. Hopefully we have many, many, many more from you to come. Learning a lot. Keep it up my man.
Fat Mike and Nofx have always really stood out to me as an influence. I think what he’s helped to create in the punk scene is unifying and awesome. The band that wouldn’t die as they say.
Would love to see a Paul McCartney video. It would also be cool to see a, “how to play bass like the 50s,” where you go over bass lines of 50s rock and roll songs.
Check out the documentary on RUclips appropriately called The Wrecking Crew about said group of studio musicians who worked with almost every great artist of all genres throughout the late 50s til the 80s...anyway the electric bass player I'm sure u you've heard of the legendary Carol Kaye...the crew's most famous and greatest work was of course Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys....but check it out if ya haven't seen it.... I'm also a huge NOFX and punk rock fan as well
Mike is definitely an innovative player and is super underrated in my opinion, great analysis as always and still waiting for a video on Roger Waters, Paul McCartney or Les Claypool at some point
Good video, fat Mike has a cool technique and amazing song writer.I really hopped you would feature fat Mike on your series.tho you didn't really explain how to "sound" like fat Mike, more so how to "play" like fat Mike. What gear does Mike use, effects, bass models, live rigs Etc.? Could there be a followup video possibly?
Always insightful and informative. How about James Jameson? Of course I’m also requesting Ronnie Lane again. Keep up the great work. Even when you cover players and bands I’m not into I ALWAYS learn something. I wish I had your musical knowledge, often I don’t know what the scale names or modes you mention mean but you have inspired me to learn new things. Thank you.
In early 2010's I joined a power metal band and I had to learn all those fast songs. I played them with a pick and don't ask me why, but I used to start fast lines with an upstroke..it became something natural for me
I remember being an early beginning guitarist and trying to learn NOFX songs. They’ve always just been on a whole neither level. Their songs are tuneful indeed but so much more musically complicated than other punk bands. By far! So difficult.
Excelent! Fat Mike is a great bass player and NOFX is a fantastic band. Your videos are really cool and it was awesome to see this particular episode. I want to ask you, because I don't really know the answer: how do you think he got the tone from the "So long (...)" album? That tone is unique and absolutely stellar. Even if it only works in mixes such as those from punk rock albums and alike. That tone... It's amazing. All the best for you and your channel! 👍
Why do I believe this is actually Mike's RUclips account? 12 years old, no videos and like 2 comments. Hey Mike, if it's you, you're my favorite songwriter ever. I wear a nofx shirt everyday under my work shirt that says "NOFX- playing good music since 1992"
His arrangements are pretty virtuosic. There's alot more to his songs than most other punk bands writers. The guy is and absolutely brilliant songwriter.
“Nothing really complicated.”?!?!? Mike has some very strange time signatures and progressions. He also has some crazy intricate lines woven and buried on some of their tunes. As well as “difficult to pin down” rhythms every once in a while. Outside of maybe Matt Freeman, Joe Raposso, Mike Watt and a handful of others, Mikes one of the GOAT bass players in that scene. Not even a fan of his politics or the childish attention seeking, how he only attacks one religion the majority of the time dislike his hypocrisy and degeneracy, but i can still be objective enough to give him his credit, musically. You made him sound just above average, when he has legendary lines,
For the upstrokes it looks like he's plucking the string like you'd do with your fingers, but using the pick? Not a bassist, so not sure how plausible that explanation is
The key to sounding like Fat Mike is you've gotta do 2 minutes of cringe jokes/"banter" after each song. Bonus points if you weird out all the chicks. Also, use a pick.

The latest album is a bloody masterpiece too.

Yeah, I’ve been asking for a video on McCartney, that’d be awesome

Why dude?? You only need any kind of bass whith close tone and flatwound playing with pick
You just came close. Fat Mike is the Paul McCartney of punk!
I - vii - ii - V - I
or
I - vii - IV - V - I
he uses a lot of techniques and details, he's a great bass player!!! Aguante nofx
Mike is definitely an innovative player and is super underrated in my opinion, great analysis as always and still waiting for a video on Roger Waters, Paul McCartney or Les Claypool at some point
Please do Chris #2 from Anti-Flag, or Joe Principe from Rise Against next :D
Love you Paul and i think it's time to do a video on Billy Gould

Awesome break down of his playing. I would say definitely spot on!
The upstroke is very funky. Fat Mike pulls the notes and plays chords by hitting the higher strings 1st.
Paolo, your videos are amazing, I don’t know how you don’t get more like!
Would love to see a video on Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse or maybe even Audie Pitre of Acid Bath

Oh yeah, Jameson is definitely one of the most iconic bassists in music and has played on so many Motown songs so I’d love to see a video on him
JJ’s been done to death by about every RUclips bass lesson channel ever.
Klaus Flouride would be great! He’s a genius!
I love these videos! i'm learning so much every week! please keep uploading paul
Excellent break down of his style and sound!
Man I was waiting for that since you started the series
In early 2010's I joined a power metal band and I had to learn all those fast songs. I played them with a pick and don't ask me why, but I used to start fast lines with an upstroke..it became something natural for me
You should do an episode of Eric Wilson from Sublime! An awesome bassist Paul!!
Agreed 4sure!!!
Please make videos about Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) and Jo-Anne Bench (Bolt Thrower). Both are crazy underrated bassists.
love your videos Paul! keep up the fantastic work! peace & love from USA!
This channel is f*cking underrated! Your content is full of knowledge and information❤keep it up
could you make a video of former bassist of Interpol, Carlos D please?
Great video of Fat Mike, but there was an error saying it is ep. 43 when it is actually ep. 44.
Could you do:
Traa Daniels (P.O.D)
Mike Herrera (MxPx and Goldfinger)
Eric Avery (Jane's Addiction)
Dustin Davidson (August Burns Red)
fuck yeah finally your doing a video on fat mike one of my greatest bass influences why I started playing with a pick.
Could you do bruce foxton of the jam or mani of the stone roses/primal scream?

Indeed. This guy's playing style is quite original and distinctive, especially among his genre.
Underrated bassist for sure, good tone too. And i thought NOFX meant "No F***ing Straight Edges" (X's).
Hey Paul, I wonder if you could make a video on Kevin Baird, he's one my fav. bassists and I would like to know how to sound like him
Great video! Fat Mike rocks, can we see one on Danny Lilker, Jo Bench, or Les Claypool soon?
Could You do a vídeo about television?
Can you do toshiya from dir en grey plzzzzzz I love your videos
Hey Paul can you to a "how to" on Whoops I Od'd?
Chris #2 from anti-flag plz! Subscribed
Nothing substandard about Mike or his bass playing. He’s one of the top punk bass players and is generally great too.
Hey Paul - would Tony campos from static x be a good subject?
Tony campos turns up everywhere!
He was even in Doom eternal.
Super cool video as always 🤘⚡️
Great video as always!!!!
Thank you so much!
Another vote for Eric avery and/or Billy gould please
Hi Paul! Could you do an episode on Adam Clayton please! 😎🤟
You played Stickin in my Eye slightly wrong. The Dmaj isn't 12th on the g string, it's open G string. Yes, very minor difference.
Slightly, lmao
The open note is on the D string while playing on the 12 and 11 fret on the g string. I think that’s what you meant anyway.
Fat Mike is my favorite bassist
dudes an accomplished musician
but thanks for doing this thing
Every times you put a video about a bass player I at least watch it 3-4 times
Bass player of Sodom also plays upstroke first :)
Dude.... our songs are not simple. In fact our chord progressions are more complicated than any other popular punk band. Just sayin....

But I heard you suck live! That's why I'm coming to BOTH your dates in Milan :D
@@alexallen6286I'm not the only one with this idea.
Hopping for a Mike Herrera and Mark Hoppus specials
He did Hoppus, but Herrera would be a great one too
Alec Baillie from leftover Crack. RIP. Totally underrated bassist.
FINALLY!!!
It is the best punk band of all time.
There is nothing sub standard about Mike’s playing, nothing virtuosic either. He is a solid player.
His arrangements are pretty virtuosic. There's alot more to his songs than most other punk bands writers. The guy is and absolutely brilliant songwriter.
lou barlow?
Aw man, alkaline trio is cool too though. Matt's cool.
I’d love to see Frank Bello, Jimmy Bain, and Alex Webster.
Brian Gibson from Lightning Bolt
Would love to see a Pete Wentz or especially a Mikey Way video
They use only one technique: follow the guitar.
We love Fatty
I like a bass
More punk
I knew it.
When we getting Bruce foxton from the jam
“Nothing really complicated.”?!?!?

also, you play sticking in my eye wrong
Nofx made simple music? Wrong lol. True for green Day or blink but not nofx
fourty
For the upstrokes it looks like he's plucking the string like you'd do with your fingers, but using the pick?
Not a bassist, so not sure how plausible that explanation is
really!?!?
Pete Wentz: Fall Out Boy
Mark Hoppus: Blink 182
Matt Sharp:Weezer
