The 2020 Mahindra Thar SUV is a more comfortable and feature equipped successor to the original Mahindra Thar. In its new generation, it maintains its off road credentials with a proper ladder frame chassis, improved departure and breakover angles, and more electronics for both, better safety and off road capability. It also comes with more creature comforts to make it more acceptable as a family car.
However, the old Thar was all about fitness for purpose. It traces its DNA to pure utilitarian off-roaders like the CJ3B, MM540, MM550, Classic and Major, and hence, was explicitly about taken the unexplored path. So with an increased focus on creature comforts and usability, has the new Thar forgotten its roots? Does it match the original for capability off-road or is there a compromise? That’s what we explore in this video.

I was eagerly waiting for New Thar. But I feel New Thar has become more like other Urban SUVs and is missing the raw mighty character. I ended up buying a sparingly used CRDE Thar. Old is rugged and can never be replaced 😎

I used old Thar for 6 years, we need to compromise on so many area.
It's basically 2 seater car
Riding is bumby, only driver( if an enthusiastic) only enjoy the drive... I ❤️ it.. sadly our co passengers not going to like it..( I tried various shocks but nothing worked for me)
3. Poor ergonomics pathetic fit and finish.
4.poor low end Torque
5. Hand brake was really useless
6. Off set steering wheel
7 pathetic brakes( only owners understand this)
8 no power windows, music system
But still it was an iconic and head tuner ...
But in my perspective new one going to rock without any doubt... I would like to buy diesel AT hardtop

Of course one loves the old Thar for what it is. Especially if one is used to old MM540s and all. But the mew Thar is way better and better suited for everyday use in modern times.
I think the new Thar has managed to combine that rugged old world charm with modernity. Its retained its legendary status. It is full of conveniences. Its got a petrol engine now and an Auto Transmission. Thats really good. It is also priced very well. What the 4 seater LX lacks are a few things; 1. Centre consoles and armrests front and rear. 2. Side armrests at rear and some storage there. 3. Rear Disc brakes for such a powerful beast.4. Remote fuel lid.5. Rear wiper.
Else it is perfect for a normal person. I ve booked one and am waiting to get it.

Hahaha...can’t stop cracking the entire time the way old Thar was competed against the new Thar even in terms of their legacy. Sure, Old Thar has its charm but it doesn’t shortchange the fact that new Thar is cable to continue its legacy and take it to the next level. A new product does not have to necessarily divert from its roots regardless of being a revolution or evolution. Take the reference of the new Discovery and the new Defender that are a vastly different product from their ordinal roots. But they still carry forward the legacy of the old Discovery and Defender respectively.

The old thar looks what thar should look like.
After completing the spiti trip (Pune to Spiti) we are stuck in Manali from past two days..our 4months old Mahindra got towed due to some OBD Check Lamp warning..the car is not able to pull beyond 1500rpm. The Mahindra service center tried to reduce the soot mass for last 2 days and now they are saying ordering a DPF filter is going to take another 7-8days and we will have to wait for it. Also they are saying fault is with us as we didn't do Regen while we didn't get any Regen warning.
They are also saying they can't share the data now ,even after 2 days of analysis.
DPF filter costs 70k and doesn't come under warranty. Even we were ready to pay just to join office in time, but now they are saying it will take 7-8days to get the DPF filter. Go for any other SUV it is just a good looking car and will make you feel you are driving a powerful car but it is just the feeling but in reality it is unreliable

Yes indeed. Well said by tushar- it is retro modern design done right. Old one might be good for some but not for many. Just because some are comfortable buying a piece of brick with no comfort and convenience, does not mean we have suffer as well. Most of the people are like us who do not own stupendous amount of money to buy a separate offroader and normal everyday vehicle.
Mahindra has done wonders with this.
