Classic! For those that don't know, the guy on the right is Ian "Molly" Meldrum - host and producer of the biggest rock and pop show in Australian history. Abba, Blondie, Madonna, etc etc etc all had their first number one hits thanks to him. He really is an Australian legend. What you're watching here is Johnny doing his punk act for the fans - and yes it's gold. The truth is he was actually rather fond of Molly and with good reason. Despite Molly being a well-known queen, he was always insanely protective of his friends. In an interview several years earlier, Johnny was being a gobshite and flicked his cigarette in Molly's cameraman's eye. Outraged, Molly (not a tough guy by any stretch) launched himself across the table and landed three good punches on Johnny. Sid Vicious, also present, laughed his arse off and clapped furiously. Both lads were impressed with Molly's balls. After having your arse kissed by every sycophant wanker in the industry, how could you not respect that? Love em all!
@@MusicalAddictionOnlineLessons There is an interview a day before or after it with Steve Jones (completely wasted) and Paul Cook, but I'm not sure if footage of the actual incident in the original comment still exists, but I have never found it on RUclips.
John Lydon... accomplished music maker.... Molly made his life on others peoples works... it's a bit like a newspaper reporter thinking they are bigger than the story itself.... absolute 1000's of people could be Molly... but there's only one Johnny Rotten... legendary in the Sex Pistols... near as good in PIL... John = star... Molly = just another admirer of stars.
Casper Jean Rimbaud yes "people like Molly" do push content... and Molly wasn't alone coz many radio and nightclub DJs assisted an artists success back then... considering there wasn't a lot willing to step up to the challenge i'll give Molly his due, but he's not in the same league as John Lydon. looking at our Aussie offering of tv compares and music gurus of the 70's and 80's there wasn't much to pick from... Lee Simon of Nightmoves (who looked like he was on serious drugs all the time even if he wasn't), Donnie Southerland of Sounds Unlimited, Richard Wilkins of MTV, and a few more... and as you say "A talking head for the record companies"... i guess it all made sense back then but looking back now it's pretty bizarre... and a lot of backroom favouritism and kissing ass would be done just to get on Countdown... the bias was shatteringly obviously putting crap like Cheetah and Marty Rhone on Countdown of which Marty had 2 big hits thanks to Molly (2 awfully painful songs Denim And Lace, and Mean Pair Of Jeans, i think i'm gonna puke). there's probably a few artists that got on the wrong side of Molly and suffered for it too... let's not forget Boz Scaggs who punched Molly out, only for Molly to rant and rave how Boz will never work in Australia again... Boz couldn't care less and his musical catalogue is a far bigger achievement than any of Mollys' dabbling in production eg: Russel Morris' The Real Thing... although Molly has many claims of breaking artists like ABBA and The Knack, most fell into his lap and he had to do very little except get them to air. remember an Aussie "Mr Paparazzi" Darren Lyons?... became world famous for his abilities to photograph celebs... but without the celebs he had nothing... kind of like Molly who constantly looked for the next big thing... Molly still stepped up and did the job though and will remain an Aussie icon... something that many Aussies shy away from, unlike the Americans who produce another "Molly" or 5 everyday.
The weird thing is, a couple of decades later John is filming Rotten Tv and interviewing Cyndi, he gives her a hug and they're getting along like old pals. I suppose his opinion changed somewhat 😏
*Interviewer:* Do you like Cyndi Lauper? *Johnny Rotten:* No! It's a bag! *Interviewer:* I like the song. Do you? *Johnny Rotten:* I hate it. Years later, John gets his own TV show called Rotton TV. Goes up to Cyndi Lauper. Gives her a hug and says he always liked her and you never sold out.
Oh no! I watched that video first, and without understanding all, (because i'm not english speaker) I found it funny, then i watch this, making everything of ''Rotten tv'' completely sarcastic, and it's heartbreaking for me, cos i like Lydon, but i LOVE Cyn 😿
That was in 1977. Molly was excited to interview the Sex Pistols and when he met them at a pub, they were all graceful and well-behaved, except for John Lydon (Johnny Rotten at the time). Johnny went as far as to flick a cigarette at a Countdown cameraman, which managed to get him right in the eye. Molly, shocked and disgusted, threw a king hit at Johnny Rotten, causing Rotten to fall off his chair. The other Sex Pistols burst out laughing.
Molly Meldrum.. And I went up to him, and said "Hi Johnny, I'm from Australia" and he had this cigarette, and he flicked it in my cameraman's eye. And I thought "Holey Hell" so I leaped across and I king hit him..
Johnny's replies to Molly's questions r hilarious!!!!! ✌️🤣

I think he was sarcastic here
If it makes anyone feel better, on his brief MTV show "Rotten TV" he meets Lauper and was very pleasent to her...but not TOO pleasent of course :)

No, I don't think they'd get along. You're just wishing they knew eachother.
Molly Meldrum.. And I went up to him, and said "Hi Johnny, I'm from Australia" and he had this cigarette, and he flicked it in my cameraman's eye. And I thought "Holey Hell" so I leaped across and I king hit him..
