Nice looking ACE! I have seen the real 8401 and the model looks fairly accurate to it from this angle, however, I'm not sure about the tan roof not going the full width of the cab roof. The ones I've seen with this feature go the full width of the cab roof. Maybe 8401 is an oddball, I would have to get a top view of it but even then, this locomotive has seen some action and is well weathered! Thanks for sharing!
I do see many BNSF aces with the paint not going full witch of the roof. I’m not sure about the color of the roof either. I’ve seen them painted white. It might be an oddball like you mentioned, but I think this is still a great model in Ho. Thanks for watching!
@@5371productions yeah I haul crews for BNSF so I'm able to get pretty close up to these units from the side, the only chance to get a top view is when I cross the bridge that goes over the south end of the yard. Bad part is I can't exactly pull over and get a photo without at least partially blocking traffic.
Photos available online show some of these have the white cab roofs. They do seem to vary a bit from unit to unit. It should be white… not sure whether it just looks tan b/c of his lighting…
one thing I did notice is the BNSF versions I've seen are missing the conduits between the PTC antenna array. not a deal breaker for me I'll just make new ones out of styrene.
I think you should be fine with putting rectangle or sugar cube speakers in the housing. I opened it up recently and they don’t use the old round speaker housing anymore. Something no more than 20mm and 38mm long. Hope it helps!
Looks like yours wasn't assembled on a friday. lucky. I've already seen multiple with bent frames, crooked (like real bad) grills on the conductor side, etc. The tan color on the cab roof is incorrect and it doesn't even have rotating bearing caps which really stand out on an Ace and would have been an actual upgrade to 2.0. Some day the SXT re-tooled ones will come out and all will be okay in the world lol.
Thanks for the information. I still think this is an outstanding Sd70ace. I’m sure the scale trains ace will be even better with the newer tooling. Thanks for watching!
@@iatif1995 Not as of right now. They might since the purchase of the MTH tooling. They’ll have to make significant changes to the dies which is the reason they are sort of hesitant about doing it now.
Scaletrains has already said they are not modifying the MTH tooling other than what is necessary to install ESU. At some point Athearn will probably have to retool these and I’m sure they’ll make all the changes we want at that time. Until then, these are great models!
Great video! Just got mine yesterday from overland, mine wasn’t built on a Friday thankfully lol it looks close to perfect. The amount of detail is awesome on these things I have a UP sd70 ah from a few years ago I think this bnsf has more detail than that model.
Just picked this one up from my local train store. Love it

@@randallellison6421 That’s pretty cool! A drone would probably be handy to capture these units from the top.

Great model. Any idea for the speaker size that can be added on the speaker housing of it? TIA 👍

NICE SD70ACE so cool and sorry I have not been here but Im back
Glad you’re back, thanks for watching!
All I know is the Athearn's recent release of the DDA40X's sound the best. I'm hoping these will be the same.
I'd like to see a review!

It’s not, the real one is supposed to be white. Thanks for watching!
