@@bambamwilliams5419 I don't even have a 'real' layout and I "had" to get one. And once the RRHMA got well underway on rebuilding the 3985, I decided to get one of those too :D ... ... I'm in O gauge though, so a _heavy_ lift to do those. Literally (20 pounds each) and financially O_o (even though two years apart).
I have those covered hoppers as well. Did have an issue with them derailing at first but I loosened up the truck screw about a half a turn and it solved the problem. The 3 pack did it for me as well on the pricing.
Dang, wish i had watched this earlier today! Just got home from my train store and pick up the NS 70ACe. I had not been to Lombard Hobbies. So this either saved me money or made me spend more today! Lol! Out the door shipped much less! So I ordered UP 1995! Been watching your videos for a while, wish i had paid closer attention to where your getting you locos. Thanks love the vids.
Got my UP 1995 today. Really looks great! I think the 70ACe is becoming my favorite. Would like to see some other offerings come out to fill my other road names. Thanks for mentioning Lombard. They are now saved in my watch and shopping list.
Those engines are really nice. I'm not modeling that era (modern) mainly because of space issues. It needs a lot of room to run them properly. They're long and heavy engines. The layout you got is more appropriate for them. But I'm impress by their beauty and how smooth runners they are. Especially the one you got out of the box at the begining. Things have changed so fast in the past years. Engines and rolling stock are getting more and more prototypical. Price is getting prototypical too !!!
ACes are ma fave. Got several on my ray road. You had a better experience with Lombard Hobbies than I did Train World. I ordered a 844 like you have through Train World a month ago and it was damaged and I let them know and sent them pictures through email and they told me to send it back and they would fix it the said they fixed it and I got it back in the mail on Monday and it wasn't fixed now I have to send it to Athern to get it fixed and Train World offered nothing to make it right. Wont do business with them again.
Thanks for the Athearn Genesis SD70ACe review. I'm happy that they finally added the roller bearing caps, snow plow grab irons and extra lighting effects but still disappointed that with the amount that they're asking for, no power boosters are included.
I'm modeling the Arkansas & Missouri and they use C420's and SD70ACe's. I've got 3 or 4 of the Athearn Genesis versions. Super nice looking locos. Run great as well.
When I saw that Welch’s fruit snacks thing in the box under the packing paper wraps, I guess somebody at Lombard Hobbies decided to ship those fruit snacks with the model train accessories to you.
Everything looks great, when you use the stabilizer 👍🏻👍🏻. Never say never when it comes to locomotives and rolling stock, LOL You’ve been talking about the Big Boy for a while, you know you want one… Your blessed to be able to get everything you have, I only wish… 😊 Loto is at a billion or more by now, think I’ll do something crazy and by a ticket 👍🏻. If I win, Lombard Hobby will love me, for sure 😂 (my wife, who knows 😂 Sure she loves me 👍🏻) Great stuff as usual and thanks, Ron
Good question! Everyone is very careful and conscientious. The is really no need for anyone to touch any equipment except to uncouple cares. So, it's really not an issue.
Series one ACe for Union Pacific wore nightmare units that got the nickname "Thunder Cabs" which were never used as mainline Lead units, mostly used as DPU, it's good to see the Railroad listens to their workers when putting in another order for Newer units. Too who doesn't know what "Thunder Cabs" are well the crack between the cab body and the Nose of the front of the windshields, series one didn't have that crack which would be so loud crews couldn't handle them at Notch 8 running due to Vibration and other sounds. Other Series besides Series One which have the crack making the Nose and Cab body 3 different pieces are filled with a rubber lining to help with vibration as the unit at Notch 8 makes less sounds and are a lot quitter when running. Real Fast way to tell and Old version over a Newer version just look for the Crack Line.
I had heard this about the ACE's. Coulda swore the industry had already figured out how to do isolated cabs not too long after wide-nose cabs came into vogue. Wonder how they managed to slip that one up?
@@bnsf909 Try setting CV 61 at value of 100. If that doesn't work, set CV 62 at 100. You can also try CV64 (master brightness) to a lower value but it may effect all train brightness level. Just experiment with the values, they go from 0 (off) to 255 (max). Rob
@@EvanstonSubI have both but programing the ESU is good only if you have the ESU programing devise. I think the DDE program in Soundtraxx beats ESU as far as operator's not having to bother with engine exhaust sound levels during inclines and declines. Have you set your DDE levels? Have you checked the weight difference between Athearn and Scaletrains locomotives?
I have tried the DDE. Not been impressed, but could be due to my lack of programming talents. I have weighed both brands. Scaletrains.com are heavier, but has been closing the gap. I program ESU via JMRI DecoderPro. No problems.
Nice review of these locos !!
Love the turning roller bearing caps . At 1:28 one ditch light is off , looks like it anyway !
Yes, I sent that back to LombardHobby. They sent a replacement the same day.
You should get a big boy. It’s to iconic to not have it on this epic UP layout.
You're probably right. Trying to hold off for now
I totally agree the Big Boy definitely needs to be apart of this magnificent layout...💯👍🏿

That's a cool idea.

Always stick with LombardHobby!!!

Yes, that would be nice. However, I see no difference between ST and Athearn when it comes to dead spots. Pretty much zero for either one.

I have an overland brass Sd70ace, and it doesn't have any labels on the top. Athearn did a really good job on them.
Good to know. Thanks

They ship them with all the orders.
The Walther's recent release of the E-9 ABA heritage units are pretty darn nice.
I saw those. Would be cool.
Nice review Daryl on both the Loco and rolling stock
Glad you enjoyed it
I'm waiting on scaletrains to make one
Could be awhile. I the meantime, I'll enjoy running my SD70ACe.

If only UP adopted this as their main paint scheme-plus silver trucks and anti-skid dark green on top of the cab nose… (I can dream, can’t I?)
You most certainly may.
Would you ever consider that Southern Pacific fantasy scheme on that SD70ACe Athearn released?
Not really into fantasy schemes.
Daryl: Does the sound decoder replicate the low rumble of the SD70-ACe prime mover?
Not sure.
So far I have most of the up train I need just two more of the locomotives and I will most of it still need the 3985 and sd70 ace
Sounds fun!

Maybe one day!

148s
You shood get big boy it great I have one it go good on your layout
I might
Should I get this if it’s for 170 on eBay almost unopened? I’m starting a small collection
Does it have sound and dcc? With DCC and sound went for 270 when they first came out. Non dcc and sound for $200.

Nope
what cv changes the ditch lighs ????
Not sure. I use JMRI DecoderPro

brightness

Yea, they will be too new for me.
Why don't these manufacturers add in the engineer and conductor?
They should for what they cost. My BLI Big Bot has both.
The cab is bent down, they look really sloppily assembled.
Hmm, I'll have to check that out
Better too loud, than not loud enough.
Many people get annoyed with loud sound very quickly.

How about ABA E9s?
