- Over the term of the Conservative government for the last 14 years, defence spending was cut, and is now rising once again.
We put to Defence Secretary Grant Shapps that, in fact, there is not a huge amount of difference between the government and Labour's positions - the Conservatives are also now raising spending when economic conditions allow.

If tanks can be easily taken out with the use of modern technological weapons, then it is pretty obvious that the bigger steel on water battleships could also be taken out in a war.?

Building ships is a nonsense without a context of "why"/purpose.
How about more soldiers instead, given the professional Army today is smaller than at any time since 1780.
There is also NO substance behind the 2.5% and how it will be funded through sacking civil servants, when growth in CS numbers is in many ways thanks to the disaster that is Brexit, repatriating functions and _costs_ from Brussels and is married to the cost reductions (like in police numbers), thanks to the Tories having screwed the economy with highest national debt and taxation since WW2.
Then there is the trick Cameron played to get to 2% - adding the nuclear deterrent into the overall defence budget meaning conventional forces are even more impoverished.
