I bought mine a year and a half ago, and they were the second batch after they ran out and supposedly improved them. I’ve been using them, and I think the software is good, but with light used in just my home studio, (only me) the metal headband snapped. I taped that up and about a week later the other snapped. I have been treating them like they were made of solid gold because I read about all the complaints and they broke anyway. The bad part is the incredibly suck support from Stephen slate. No answer whatsoever to two phone calls and three emails. Nada. A company that has got to be just loaded and can’t afford to take care of its customers over such an obvious defect. This is absolutely shameful. Don’t buy this crap product unless you want to throw away 400 bucks.
I can highly recommend trying the headphones squarely on your ears, without hair and glasses in between. I too wear glasses and found that getting a perfect seal on the headphones does subtly help the imaging and especially the truly low bass response. I just put my glass "on top" of the headphone cups once I've placed the headphones properly. Also, pro tip: You do NOT have to add the HD-Linear to your favorites. Simply hitting the main BYPASS button will give you that profile.
I love this review! Well done! But yes, listening to other tracks that you love to compare to those you are working on with this tool is where the magic will be I imagine. Exciting stuff!
I agree with you about the Howie Weinberg room, I was wondering if anyone would feel the same as me. I need to find some masters Howie mastered to listen in there.
They're interesting, but out of my budget...I have the ToneBoosters Morphit for correction, and just started using the BluCat Re-Head for room emulation, and together they make a pretty good monitoring solution for headphones...
And which headphones u got? These headphones seems to be the perfect thing for someone without monitors but i also cant afford them. I think about the BD 990 PRO and these plugins
vsx is still the better solution. all in one plug and play. less maintenance, compared to the 4 points of failure of those selfmade systems. the price is 299.... also room emulation is meh compared to award winning studio emulations... unbeatable deal compared to what ure using anyways.
Jesus my best friend was recommending me these headphones and here's a full blown assessment and first impressions. Looking to see your view on these headphones after 3 months and if you'll use them as one of your main source of reference.
I watched this in my well-tuned living room, with a 5.2 surround system... if it makes you feel any better, I immediately came to same conclusions you did about that mix, regardless of which Setting you used. I was really happy to see you finally accept it by the end when you listened to it again on your traditional monitor setup.
Well I had to be sceptical at first, to make sure I keep my objectivity- and even 24 hours later it’s still something I’m adjusting to- but it’s making me come up with balances for the mixes which is the main thing!
They’re my go-to now. It’s so much quicker than the old monitors then car test then phone speaker etc etc…. And much more reliable than regular headphones
Thanks a lot! Now I often heard that a mix in the Homestudio sounds great and the same mix in the car sounds awful. Does this system solve this problem? I mean, can solve the problem with the VSX-sw or do have to do that in your mix without VSX, if you don’t mix with VSX from start to finish. Hope you get what I mean … . However I don’t understand why the mix from the studio should sound worse in the car??? What will you mostly have to change in the mix so that it also sounds good in the car. And after changing it that it sounds good in the car, does it still sound good in the studio? Don’t understand this.

Great Review. Could you do another one where you compare it to Abbey Rodes Studio 3 and NX from Waves? Those offer almost the same thing but can be used with any pair of headphones. Would love to see a comparison especially since the Waves are a faction of the price.
Hey Adam, I was just wondering if that 3-month follow up video was coming? I'm extremely curious to hear what you think of them now that you've had a decent amount of time to assess them. Thanks for the great, thorough, and well produced review :)
It’s coming. Apparently there’s another update coming soon, and I’m moving house this month but I’ll be on it! Anyway, spoilers- they’re really really good
@@adamsteelproducer found it! Curious if the replacement headphones are holding up ok? Am very interested but buying a 500$ headphone that breaks is very scary as there's no dealers in india that would get me a replacement I think
I'm getting a pair just as an extra reference to check my mixes but I gotta say I'm disappointed in the build design of the headphones but hopefully the software makes up for it.
Nice review, thanks Adam! One note (question)...when listening to the headphone models, shouldn't the Depth knob be set to 100% wet, to check whether they are close to the real thing? Looking forward to the next VSX review. Thumbs up!
Thanks for doing this first review Adam, a big help for sure! :D I was wondering in terms of wearing glasses and the headphones bieng closed-back. Does the bass stay in-tact with glasses on or does it diminished quite a lot? :) Thanks in advance for your help!
Would you recommend to use crossfeed and a studio emulation like aquarius for the Sennheiser HD650? I'm about to get them because i can get them cheap, greetings from germany!
Thanks for the candid review, and I look forward to your follow-up. As much as they are tempting, it still seems like a certain amount of snake oil. Why go to the trouble of having those different options then allow you to EQ it within the plugin? I don’t get that.
The EQ in the plugin is a fine control for personal preference- what if you had a car stereo but had the high end turned up already? Matches that. Same with the other models
A bit confused as to what exactly we are hearing here. So is this just the direct output of the plugin? If the emulations are tuned to the headphones isn’t the point of hearing it’s output on anything other than said headphones moot? Also, when you switch back and forth I’m not clear on what is what, although, to be fair, I’m watching in low light mode on an iPad and I’m jumping around in the video, so please forgive me if you explained this clearly and I missed it. It all sounds a bit weird on first listen but if the plugin is meant for use only with the specific headphones then I would expect it to sound weird.
I do clearly say it’s going to sound weird in the video. But if I hadn’t fed the processed sound through to the viewer, I would only have had more complaints of “well you didn’t even show us” etc etc
I'm in a really nice caravan and look at the MTM ilouds... can you do a later review after using to say if they would be better than really small speakers?
It's a while till I make this buy so hopefully, you would have road-tested them a little. Expensive but costs more than my MTM and C50A combo... but then lack the sound for others thing... huumm difficult... maybe I just have to get richer before then lol
7:00 Could you please explain your output setup? I really want something like that with different speakers, but haven't figured it out yet in Reaper. Thanks!
I don’t usually do this, but I have set multiple hardware outs from the master buss, to two headphone amps (for the VSX and 650s) and my main monitor outs, and I’m using shift-click to disable each output so I can switch between. It’s not elegant, but was the best way to show the processing to the capture PC (which is a whole different thing)
That’s the impression I got, although it’s certainly psychological rather than actually felt. I didn’t want to wax lyrical about it in case it was just a first impression, but it seems that the software’s onto something
Very true! But after years of doing this, to be able to dial in almost everything and then just need that final bass ✔ check in big speakers/sub sounds enticing to me.
Really interested to hear this through those headphones. Listening on mine with sonarworks sounds like the mids are scooped on everything with a very bright high end. So I'm guessing those headphones are quite midrangy with the highs sloping off or something? (their natural response I mean, outside of what the plugin is doing).
I think you might be right, I’ll have to use them for something non-daw to tell. The binaural thing as well doesn’t translate well onto other systems, but with the headphones fitting well it takes on a whole different character. It’s bizarre
Hi guys...I have a pair as well..I feel the same way as Adam..Not sure yet..There's a reason why Slate has called them the Founders Edition..I have had the privilege of working lots of headphones and the first thing I've noticed is the build quality feels a little cheap and feels like the basic commercial brands out there..I feel the ear cuff should be larger so your ears can sit inside like the Audeze. I have sore ears after two hours..Maybe it's because they're new or maybe it's my fat head. Anyway I could on but I'll stop there. Thanks for review Adam.

That’s the idea! And I will be doing that over the next couple of weeks, just not on camera because of the whole copyright thing. And none of those classic tracks would sound “better”, just different. My reaction might not be what you expect...
Im sorry, the founders edition sticker is not acceptable at all. If the founders edition costs more than the regular, that is a joke. If not, there was no point making a founders edition version anyway.
@@adamsteelproducer Does the founders edition cost more? I think its the only founders edition item Ive seen that the founders part peels off. Its a bit tacky man. Sorry if my opinion is so overbearing 🤣

If you’re bringing the price of other headphones as your argument though, you’ve missed the entire point. These aren’t headphones. They’re a turnkey solution. Whatever the price difference is from the hardware itself is what you are paying for the software, neither part works without the other
Doesn't take 30 minutes to assess headphones, put them on, tell your opinion, its not like we can do, see or hear your sound comparison without the headhones in hand. Why on earth would he switch to inferior software? :-) (I kid.. I have both a Mac running Logic Pro X and also Reaper on a windows system). Reaper has by far the best monitoring section. Mr Hop Pole could very well have used the monitoring section of reaper and simply switched between output channels but this way the viewer can easily see what is switched where.
Exactly! In normal practice I’d have it setup off screen and out of the master routing section- but then the viewers wouldn’t hear it. The things I do for you viewers....
@@eranddroory9987 alright ill bite, 7 years in logic, tried reaper plenty of times but got the same complaints you normally hear - workflow, aesthetics, piano roll, navigation - not all bad just different at least. I have to be honest they look like they came from AliExpress in my opinion the founders addition sticker falling off would really made me question the quality of everything else such as the drivers the cable is the one that really would disappoint interesting to see if they will hold up in a commercial facility like your
Thank you for all your great videos from Ireland
Rent to buy only available in the US I see. Ah well, never mind.
Well they’re a US company, it would be very hard to offer that worldwide because of different laws etc in different places
@@adamsteelproducer Indeed. I'll just save up. This looks amazing. Thanks for the video.
@@simonsdiary thanks man!
Looking forward to hear your feedback about comparing vsx vs 650, especially for long day workflow :) Also try to compare vsx system with Realphones via 650, this software was before Slate's product, and it's awesome, calibration for 650 there are better than in Sonarworks. Regards from Ukraine !
Howie mastering has MANY near fields monitors
My First impressions..agreed about the guitars sound..weird..will need many more listens to get the feel for these..as Steven said..every setting..mide near and far..has an..:ambience" to them..but so far..quite enjoying
Omg, your 650's are been footsteped?
Damn that was quick
I would have love to see your reaction and comparaison listening to mixes done in those studio .... like linkin park Jeff Buckley .... they should sound good on every system aren t they ;) ?
Cheers
That’s the idea! And I will be doing that over the next couple of weeks, just not on camera because of the whole copyright thing.
And none of those classic tracks would sound “better”, just different. My reaction might not be what you expect...
£400 and How Much ????
Well it’s not cheap, that’s for sure.
That cymbal.
No matter how good these are I'm reluctant to buy a product from a company that released them with those cheap looking 'founders edition' stickers on.
Still waiting for the final veredict jajaajajja
I’m waiting on the vsx 2.0 update but they’re great and I use them every day
Awsome 🤟🏼
Im sorry, the founders edition sticker is not acceptable at all. If the founders edition costs more than the regular, that is a joke. If not, there was no point making a founders edition version anyway.
It’s just a sticker. Calm down.
@@adamsteelproducer Does the founders edition cost more? I think its the only founders edition item Ive seen that the founders part peels off. Its a bit tacky man. Sorry if my opinion is so overbearing 🤣
There’s nothing out there other than the founders one. I wouldn’t pay more for a sticker
@@adamsteelproducer Thats fair enough then. I was thinking that the founders would have limited stock and then the regular edition would be released. And then a few months down the line the founders owners would be like "I swear mine was a founders edition" lol.
As far as I know, I want one as a present. Anyone? HEY, Dear hop pole listen to some more genres for final comments.
Background music gets distracting.
And for everyone who says that, I get another on videos without saying the silence is uncomfortable.
Profit margin on this product must be insane.
Calibrated headphones from Sonarworks are pricier
A Stickers?!)
Plugin manufactures should already ditch iLok. It such an anachronism
Works perfectly for me, I work across 2 or more machines depending on the day
@@adamsteelproducer 3 activations is enough for most cases
lol how on earth can you judge them if you wear em over your hair
My experience of having hair for many years and wearing headphones to mix for the same amount of time tells me that the effect is negligible. Hair isn’t made of metal sheeting, nor does it entirely cover anything
bought in Norway ,,the worst mixes ever for me ,,don't know how to use them
bollocks!! 400!!!!
Things cost what they cost. I’ve seen headphones that cost much more.
Cheap construction
Steven slate is the Elon Musk of the audio world. Great innovative products, but questionable build quality and customer service 😂
Questionable customer service? Really? From a company who's CEO and support staff make themselves available out of hours all the time? Don't think so.
Hey man, not trying to start anything. Just had a difficult time accessing my slate all in one bundle because I purchased my subscription before they switched their servers and was in the old system. Just thought I'd point out the similarities as a joke. Not bashing their products because they are great. Love your reviews and your videos.
I appreciate that, just keep in mind that tone doesn’t translate well in text 👍
I always thinks it's funny that people spend a fortune in time and money trying to remove the reflections in their room and these are getting you to spend more money trying to add them.
there are wrong reflections and right reflections.
Worst rollout ever!
My god, our boy talks 🤦♂️
This background track is so annoying .Spoiled all review a little bit.
Blablablub to much TALK imo
The irony is astonishing.
Great review, thank you! You can check by the way dSONIQ RealPhones if not wet ;) .... for comparison in a future.
guys these are 50$ headphones and he is clearly sponsored
They’re $450 headphones and I am not sponsored. I clearly said in the video that I bought these myself with my own money. No-one is paying me.
@@adamsteelproducer i meant it as they're worth only 50$, my opinion, look up M&O beryllium acoustic headphones
But if they’re resilient (and it feels like they are) and do the job, then they’re worth the asking price
@@adamsteelproducer fair enough, still sounds biased when ya got beyerdynamic hitting pretty heavy under 200$, plus all the other comparable plugins- waves, tonebooster, sonorworks. Still a fan of slate, and your videos though! Jusy giving my 2 cents no one asked for lol
All the extra talk was just useless. Sorry man but i had skip through your video to damn near the half market just to get your first reaction. 15 minutes of nothing.
Ah well, at least several thousand other people seem to have found the talking useful.
Keep in mind, not everyone in the world wants exactly what you want.
Main mistake: you are using windows. Try using MAC oSX... instead and LOGIC PRO X to monitor instead of Reaper :)
Why?
Why on earth would he switch to inferior software? :-) (I kid.. I have both a Mac running Logic Pro X and also Reaper on a windows system). Reaper has by far the best monitoring section. Mr Hop Pole could very well have used the monitoring section of reaper and simply switched between output channels but this way the viewer can easily see what is switched where.
Exactly! In normal practice I’d have it setup off screen and out of the master routing section- but then the viewers wouldn’t hear it. The things I do for you viewers....
It's a joke right.. I bet he never tried reaper. If he did and was serious about what he does he wouldn't even consider using Logic anymore.
@@eranddroory9987 alright ill bite, 7 years in logic, tried reaper plenty of times but got the same complaints you normally hear - workflow, aesthetics, piano roll, navigation - not all bad just different at least. Other than plugin/project loading, which logic finally sped up in 10.5, whats really better in reaper for average "prosumer" part time producer other than customization?
