- In August 2021, I solo thru-hiked the John Muir Trail (JMT) northbound (NOBO) from Horseshoe Meadow via Cottonwood Pass.
On Day 1, I had a half-day of hiking due to a late start based on shuttle availability, but I was so grateful to be out there hiking and excited to begin my journey.

Brilliant and brave AF 👍🏼
Good stuff! And solo! Wicked! Back in 1976, when I was 16, a buddy and I hiked the JMT northbound. Not many folks on the trail back then. It is still one of the best adventures of my life. We started with 75 lb packs (lightweight was not even a concept back then) and monster heavyweight mountaineering boots at the Whitney Portal trailhead and hiked all the way to Yosemite with no food drops (we had 3 weeks of mac&cheese). We didn't know about this concept called "food drops". I've been all over the world since then but the JMT still lives deeply in my dreams. It is truly one the finest trails on the planet. I tell everyone it is where God goes backpacking. I Look forward to seeing the rest of you story and reliving my past!
Pretty sweet :) Funny that you talk so soft to wake up anything in big open space ;) Got a permit - go light-n-fly July 2023
Great video! Looking forward to seeing the entire series of videos! .. my son and i did the JMT NOBO in July 2021
Thank you! And congrats!! The JMT was definitely an experience of a lifetime :)
Wow, thats quiet an adventure you did. Thank you very much for taking us with you Erin. The trail looks beautiful so far. JMT is definitely on my list. And in case you want to see some random guy, hiking in the dunes together with his dog, It would make me more than happy if you come over and follow us on the recent trail we hiked ;) Stay safe out there. Warm wishes, Mario (subs)
Loved this video. It is almost ASMR to me, especially your voice. You got a new subscriber from Italy.
Excellent start!
Thank you!
Amazing video, composition is really amazing.
thank you!
Beautiful 😍
thank you!
Fantastic, I'm next door in Arizona where I do most of my hiking, but would love to do the JMT or PCT. I will be following along....
Congratulations on the start of your adventure. It looks like you have fantastic weather to start the trip. I look forward to checking out the series. Dream hike of mine, so hopefully I can make it out that way some day. For now, I'll have to live through others.
I started the PCT in 2020 also and ended up having to get off a few days into it. I know how you feel, I wasn’t able to get back out in 2021 and this year I was not able to get a permit. The JMT is a beautiful trail, I’m glad you were still able to get out there and hike!
Beautiful scenery. :)
It is so beautiful! The Sierra might be my favorite mountain range
Life is about the journey and not the destination…stay safe and strong while you enjoy the hike of a lifetime.
True
You are going to kick John Muir’s butt! You have some courage going solo and I admire you. A suggestion to be mindful of competing background noise like wind drowning you out. Some parts your voice is loud enough and others not. Wanna hear what you have to say.
I'm late to the party, but I enjoyed day 1 and will continue the journey. I hiked the JMT in 2019, same route as you, and will do it again this August. Thanks for sharing!!!
Wow, pretty neat 🙂👍
I love cheesy beans and rice. Just bought a 3 lbs. bag of refried flakes about a week ago.
Ohh, that sounds so good!
But never heard of refried flakes…
Where do you get them from?
RUclipsr- Urban Historian
@@erinbricker-urbanhistorian5803 I got them at Amazon. They are called instant refried beans also. I used to find them at a food coop or an organic food grocery store
Great video. I’m hoping to hike SOBO in Sept depending on permits. Looking forward to your future videos. Thanks for sharing. (Sub).
Thank you! Good luck on permits! September seems like a beautiful time to hike the trail
Would you please disclose the details on the shuttle from Lone Pine to the Cottonwood Pass trailhead. TIA! Great videos BTW!
Sure! Lone Pine Kurt is who drove me to the trailhead. He is incredibly nice! You can just email him to schedule a ride (LonePineKurt@aol.com). Here are a couple links with more information on transportation! www.pcta.org/discover-the-trail/john-muir-trail/jmt-transportation/

What an inspiration, making thr JMT your first solo hike is impressive. I’m planning on hiking it next summer so I’m excited to follow your journey! How many days of food did you fit in your BV450? I have the same canister and can’t seem to fit more than 4 days of food in it.
Thank you! I also only fit 4-5 days of food in my BV450. I resupplied every few days on day #5, #9, and #11 (I completed my hike in 2 weeks). Good luck on your hike!
@@ErinExploring Do you think you could've fit a BV500 in that pack? I am interested in getting a gorilla but unsure how a larger bear can will fit.
@@fukmypuss I haven't tried! I do have a BV500 at home. I'm currently out of town, but once I'm home I can try to see if it fits and let you know!
Where do you park if your starting at horseshoe meadows?
what type of strap are you using to secure your DSLR?
Nice …. More videos in work?
thanks! I'll be sharing videos weekly on Saturdays!
Can you use a bear sack rather then a can?
No, bear sacks/bags are not allowed on the JMT. Here is the list of allowed food storage canisters! www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/containers.htm
Did I miss your starting date? It's easier to put the weather in context to know what "hot" is.
Agreed
"um"
I can barely hear you.
Listen in a quiet room or use ear buds.
Agreed…
