You're right about the cheap tin can. It didn't last long. I ended up buying and lawn mower muffler for $10 and it works great. I made the "muffler for $4.00. The header is a different part.
@kusstemzinc Thanks, butI gotta tell you. The muffler didn't last long because the metal in those kinds of cans are real low grade steel. I ended up buying a $6.00 lawn tractor muffler at Mills Fleet Farm which is working very well. The idea was good but that type of can was not.
The fiberglass didn't hold up as long as I hoped. I ended up buying a lawntractor muffler for $6.00 at Mills Fleet Farm and it's perfect. It sounds good and gives me a extra 5 mph.
I have a update to report. The candy can didn't last very long because the steel was very thin and of low quality. Made a new one out of a stainless steel kitchen pot. It is holding up very well.
I would but the can I used was a cheap candy can made of very thin low grade metal. What I ended up doing was buying a 10 hp rated lawnmower muffler for about $6.00, bought a short (6 inches )threaded piece of steel pipe for about $2.80. I screwed the pipe onto the muffler, tacked it down with a welder then welded the pipe to the end of the tail pipe. It works real good, sounds real good and adds about 5 more mph to my top speed. If it fell off where it connects to the engine, you should get a new one off Ebay. Trying to make one would be harder than earning the money to buy one.

damn u could have saved 3 dollars, by taking some insulation out of the attic or in between the walls. u buy a nice shiny header but put a crappy tin can onto the end. its funny. but that can will burn up and rot away in 100 miles. go to the junk yard

Just make sure the exhaust goes alongside or past the fiberglass and not through it, otherwise it will burn up.
