  • Check out MERCH through my Etsy shop! www.etsy.com/s... It's another year and another build-off! This year, we're ditching a pair of strings and making the neck longer. That's right, it's BASS time!
    In this, the first video of the series, we're drawing out a full scale plan and prepping up some wood.

      I 100% agree. It's one of the most satisfying parts of a build to see the tough wood come out all shiny and planed

    It's gonna look awesome for sure. :)
    I was at Crimson last August and built a guitar with your help. It was my own body design and was spray stained in purple and blue. You helped me with a really unique volute with a tiger stripe inlay on it.
    I was running short on time and you offered to do the fret work on it but were called back home shortly after.
    Just to let you know that I did the frets at home and they came out damn near perfect. :)
    My guitar looks great and plays fantastic.
    It would never have come out anywhere near as good as it did without your help and for that I am eternally greatful.
    I also finally decided on it's name. The design began life using a Z so I have decided to call it Zed Leppelin. :)
    THANX DUDE! :)

    I can't wait to see what the fretboard is going to look like once that tape comes off and the glue is cleaned off.

      Spoiler: It's more disappointing that you'd think... I think it will need oiling before it really comes to life! It's not bad, but not as obvious that it's bookmatched

    Always enjoy watching your channel mate. Your build looks like it’s going to be really cool.
    Also, I’m very jealous of how much walnut you have there!

      Thanks a million, hopefully the build will live up to expectation and the image I have in my head.
      You should see the amount of Walnut Crimson have in the back, it's madness!

    Cool stuff Sean. As a bass player, I’m mostly happy you are building a bass. 😎

  • @rjdeseijn

    Cool, a bass! :-) Finally. Since most are only building the 6 string octave higher counterpart, haha.
    Are you going to stick to one single coil in the bridge position only? Adding a second one, both close to the brigde, like some Warwick basses have could be something too.

    • @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars
      @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars  2 года назад

      I haven't fully decided on pickup choice actually. I'm currently gravitating towards the single pickup in the bridge, because I love the simplicity of those kinds of instruments!

      @@AwenLutherieCustomGuitars I see, well bass guitar can get as complicated as guitars when it comes to electronics, or as simple :-)
      The single coil in this position will give a mid range / nasal sound. For more low end, well I think I don't need to tell.
      Either way, I look forward to the next episode of this GGBO build ;-)

    Was wondering if you were going to enter this year again Sean
    Remember to enjoy yourself this year and no be knocking your pan in and not having time to yourself and then rushing at the end.
    Walnut & Ash is a nice start
    How long did it take to resaw that block of Walnut?
    Good to see you at work again ... lol
    Looking forward to seeing how it turns out mate 👍

    • @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars
      @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars  2 года назад

      Hey Rab, hope you're doing well!
      I absolutely don't plan on having my pan knocked in (I like that phrase!). This build should be much less of a headache and much better planned behind the scenes so hopefully much less stress.
      The walnut sawed nicely actually. Decently new blade and it took maybe 7 or 8 minutes? Same as the ash really.

      @@AwenLutherieCustomGuitars That's aw right (cause the blade was new, but that's why i asked cause it's one of the bandsaws all the students use).
      I'm going to try and make Tartan wood for my build this year and have put a sneak peak pic up on the site if you want to take a wee nosey
      Aw the best Sean, speak to you soon bud 👍(aw btw do you spell it Seaun ? we had a discussion about it months ago but i couldn't remember, so you got it the common way ... lol?)

    Have you thought about building this as a neck through Bass? By the way I enjoyed the song sound track for the build. I think you have chosen some nice wood selections and they book matched nicely. I like the shape of the bass and head stock design.

    • @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars
      @AwenLutherieCustomGuitars  2 года назад +1

      I had thought of it, but I'm not a fan of neck-through instruments really any more. It's a super wasteful method of building in my opinion. Last years build was neck-through and it ate the equivalent of 6 flat-headstock necks. Madness!
