The pine tar bat incident with George Brett of the Kansas City Royals was the result of Brett having pine tar more than 17 inches from the base of the bat. After that distance it is by rule considered tampering with the bat. The Yankees manager Billy Martin noticed the pine tar was too far from the handle a couple of days before but waited until Brett hit the home run to contest it. When the umpires called Brett out Brett’s reaction made it a moment in MLB history. Both Brett and Billy Martin ended up going to the Hall to Fame. Martin as a manager and Brett as a player.
Such a hilariously arbitrary rule too. Other than maybe concerns about getting it on the ball (quickly mitigated by the fact they change the ball out almost every pitch), I cannot imagine how even fully dipping the bat in pine tar would give any competitive advantage lmao. Like how they proved corking the bat actually reduces power
@@downrighttt I mean, yeah. But with the amount of nonsensical superstition around baseball, it's not surprising. The fact that some players will like wear 1 of their socks inside-out because they feel like it brings them better luck or they'll take two sips of water from a cup, pour half of the remaining on their glove, and then dump the rest on their head. There's players who do some of the craziest nonsensical crud because they did something like that or someone on the team long ago did something like that and they won, they did it again and won again and it became the "lucky charm" of that player or team.
Re: George Brett (KC Royals) charging the ump … the Yankees coach approached the ump-after Brett homered-and accused Brett of covering his bat with more pine tar than the rules allowed. Pine tar, a sticky glue-like substance used to give batters a better grip, hardens over time-making the bat more effective. The ump measured the bat against the 17-inch width of home plate and determined the bat violated the 18-inch pine tar rule, turned to the Royals dugout and signaled that Brett was out. Following the game the Royals immediately protested the game’s outcome; Major League Baseball ended up overruling the ump’s call and ordered the game to be resumed from the point after Brett had homered.
8:31 - The Pine Tar incident. George Brett was thrown out because he had excessive pine tar on his bat. The Royals appealed, won the appeal, and the game was continued a month later from that point with the HR counting. KC would win the game.
If you’re gonna get ejected you gotta get your moneys worth, pretty common in most American sports but certainly baseball has it the most engrained in the sport. Also, the guy on the Mariners Kyle Seager seems like a genuinely good guy, spent his whole career with the mariners and when he was no longer under contract, he retired instead of playing for a different team.
Baseball probably is the sport where players get in the faces of the umps the most but then again it's also the sport where umps have the most power and can affect the outcome of the game more than other sports.
One of the best rivalries in college football, the Red River Shootout between OU Sooners and Texas Longhorns, starts in less than 7 hours. 11am Central Time/12pm Eastern Time. Texas is ranked 3, and Oklahoma is ranked 12. Both are undefeated.. This game was insane in 2020 and 2021. And over the last 8 or so years, the game was decided by 7 points or fewer (except for last year). If you decide to just watch highlights, watch the highlights either from the channels "Matthew Loves Ball" or "Wheels". Both have been reliable highlight channels.. The official network channel highlights always suck, and are too short.
Little Meaningless Trivia: When pop singer Lorde (a Kiwi by birth) wrote her song "Royals" - she got the inspiration from looking at an old American magazine that had George Brett on the cover in his Royals uniform. She didn't know anything about American baseball or who Brett was - but he was standing in his Royals jersey surrounded by adoring fans. Brett was a great player and he played pro ball for 21 seasons. (I had to look it up - i knew it was a long time.) Very Impressive.
We all gonna ignore Randy Marsh umpiring an important game between the Soxs and Yankees?? *Edit: literally 2 seconds later Daz calls it. Big ups blokes*
I'm suprised there isn't more clips of David Ortiz in this video. There was a great one where he got so mad that he started hitting a telephone used for calling the bullpen with his bat that is pretty crazy.
No need for me to comment on the Brett incident since so many of your followers already have. If you really want to see managers getting in umpire's faces look for videos of Earl Weaver, Billy Martin or Lou Pinella for legendary arguments and hysterics
ARod was too good to pull that kind of BS that he did several times in his career... Y'all got me worked up! I don't think the Yanks get favorable calls, but they are the most hated team in baseball... You're either a fan or very much not. Thanks for continuing to do baseball reactions, fellas!
You have to take in consideration the history between Clemens and Piazza. There was no legitimate reasons for him to throw the bat when he did. He easily could have waited until after he walked away
Clemons should not have thrown it at all. Or, at the very least, he could have waited for the play to be dead to throw it. He was clearly throwing it at the batter.
Baseball is an American sport through and through. 1st amendment on the bill of rights is taken seriously, even in game debates with umps/refs. Of course a free speech country would allow players to gripe at their officials. Umps like Angel Hernandez are a prime example of why you should be able to verbally berate them
Clemens definitely threw the bat at Piazza. Piazza hit Clemens VERY well. You could say Piazza owned Clemens. Clemens had thrown at Piazza's head more than once (hitting him during the season, and knocking Piazza out cold) and there was bad blood between them well before this. Also.. this happened in the 2000 World Series.
The one where George Brett goes crazy. He hit a home run in the 9th inning to put the Royals ahead. Yankee Manager Billy Martin complained that Brett had pine tar too far up the barrel of the bat. The umpires agreed. Later, the League office overturned the umpires call, the home run counted, and the game was replayed starting with the batter just after Brett. Royals held on to win the game. FUN FACT, a left handed throwing Don Mattingly played second base when the game resumed.

I hate when ppl beat me 2 it lol
I think the bat is in the hall of fame also

That’s not roid rage, that’s just pissed off players.

I remember watching that play with George Brett. I used to be a big royals fan back then.

Ya, I never really felt like Clemens threw it at Piazza either. Clemens wasn't even looking at him when he threw it.
guys keep this channel going if and when you move to america. this channel is going to be better when you guys are here do some live action at a game

She wrote it in the bathroom at work
And the funniest part is the team is named after an annual live stock show.
that arod clip always makes me laugh. the most blatant slap ever 🤣
Clemens threw in Piazza’s direction but not at him? How’s that not the same thing?!
Absolutely correct, and he certainly wasn't just "clearing the field" of the bat.
Just trying to scare him.
If he wanted to hit him with the bat, he easily could have. He was just trying to intimidate him. And, I am not a fan of the Yankees.
We all gonna ignore Randy Marsh umpiring an important game between the Soxs and Yankees??

Yet no matter which baseball stadium the Yankees go to, there are always a lot of Yankee fans.
@@vodriscoll exactly. That's why people hate the Yankees.
MLB literally gave y’all Goldilocks balls all last season to push Judge over the record
You should react to some of the Red Sox vs Yankees fights, brawls, etc.....entertaining
Well baseball is the only sport where a call has to be made after every play
I'd like to imagine a rod yelling a rod slap like Austin powers yelling judo chop.
You have to take in consideration the history between Clemens and Piazza. There was no legitimate reasons for him to throw the bat when he did. He easily could have waited until after he walked away
Just try and snap a baseball bat on your thigh… it’s nearly impossible for the average person. It’s actually impressive to see.
See comments below for answers. They nailed it! Quick response fellas. Good job!
Bo Jackson (former All-Star in the NFL & MLB) would break bats over his head!
It is a part of the game 😁
Do a video of the Chicago cubs history or w/e
i have broke many bats on my knee when i was young .. now my right knee is in pain everyday
Sure you did 🤦
Clemons should not have thrown it at all. Or, at the very least, he could have waited for the play to be dead to throw it. He was clearly throwing it at the batter.
That was no toss to a bat boy, it was a throw at the player. You're sounding ridiculous.
Clemens could have thrown that in any direction--how did it end up bouncing in front of Piazza (not a Mets or Yanks fan, at all)?
Clemens threw that at Piazza on purpose. Side note, Clemens was probably the only one in this video caught with roids.
i think arod was caught as well. i remember him getting suspended for a whole season
Corey n Kyle have made ten times as much as Jeff and jarred. Just saayinnnn
4:06 basketball
Joe Buck is such a drama queen sometimes lol

Nah Clemens should not have thrown that bat. That was stupid
NHL coaches yell like crazy at the officials but players not so much because it’s bad for business to get on the refs bad side.
Randy Marsh lol

Strong disagree on Clemens. It was uncalled for. And was on steroids.
