Restoring dented vintage lighter - Restoration project

- I bought lot of old lighters from auction for restoration. The lighters are missing parts, have dents and some rust and oxidation. I'm sure I'll be able to restore at least some of them. The lot had 4 of this type of lighters and a couple really old ones. The lighter has 3 parts. The lighter itself, a tank for extra lighter fluid and a cap. I think it's called Tommy style lighter after brand of Tommy lighters. I have no idea what the brand on it is.
I made some of my own tools from nails to push up all the dents. After getting the shell of the lighter back to orginal shape I sanded it flat because there is only so much you can do to dents on metal. The dents often stretch the metal so that I can't be only hammered back to the orginal shape. I However I got it close enough to just sand off the tiny unevenness. This was important because mirror finish will reveal the slightest bumps.
After sanding I polished it by wet sanding and polishing compound. This resulted to perfect mirror polish. The lighter was missing the spring and screw that hold the flint in place so I loaned one spare parts from the other lighters I bought. I have already ordered some spare parts but they take weeks to ship so I figured this is the best solution.
I also also changed the old wick to a Zippo wick which was the same size and the only option locally available. I also put is a Zippo flint but then I realized the old flint had been oxidized and jammed in the pipe for the flint. I used a small screwdriver to destroy the remaining of the flint. After this the lighter worked perfectly. I added a blooper at the end of the video. I was not careful with the lighter fluid and there was some on the outside of the lighter and mu hands which resulted me setting my hands on fire :D This is not very dangerous as the flame is not very hot but obviously it's never safe to be setting this on fire by accident. I hope you learned from my mistake or at least had a good laugh, I know I did.

100 000 views in the first 4 hours! I just spent maybe 45 minutes reading and answering to comments. I'll continue that tomorrow. I'm happy so many of you enjoy my work that is why I do continue doing these videos. Maybe some of you are even inspired to try to give new life to some of your own old stuff. Anyways, just wanted to show my appreciation for all the nice comments. You guys are the best!
DIYCoolStuff what the name has this zip?
Is that total channel views or something? This vid only has 17k (Which is still good btw)
Oh, youtube seems ti have trouble keeping up. I can see from live analytics that the actual number for this video is more like 120 000 at the moment. RUclips algorithm works in mysterious ways. I would have been pleasantly surprised with even the 17K
Hi, cool freaking video man. You should ask us to send you cool items to be restored and you could make a video about it. Thanks for sharing with us.
@DYICoolStuff hey man could u send me one of these lighters i cant find em anywhere and i wanna get on for my grandpas bday thats coming up soon
Remember when useing lighter fluid.
Wash hands before lighting
Wash lighter before lighting

Vortex77 Lazarus man your suggestion are great
Or, you could just avoid getting lighter fluid on your hands and the outside of the lighter. It isn't difficult.
Step1: wait for a minute.
Done.
It evaporates in seconds what are you on about
Yeh, no music is great, love this!
Honestly yeah I feel the same. Without music it kind of feels like you're just chillin in this dude's garage or workshop and watching him fix stuff
Before and after comparisons on restoration videos is essential. Watching the video we ( at least I do ) forget how it looked at the beginning. Nice site. I subscribed immediately.
RUclips is the site this is a channel on this site.
Seriously, bic should start making their lighters like THIS.
The problem with these old lighters is just like zippos the fuel evaporates.
@@lol-hm1xb plus its a lot more expensive to make metal lighters. thats why you see a lot of zippos for over 20 dollars
@@lol-hm1xb true true
And then you're more pissed off when someone nicks one from you when they borrow at a party or something and you forgot who you lent it to. Though it is much more recognizable if ever you'll see each other again and they use it.
If you like this kind of lighters, there was a company (IMCO) which went out of business only fairly recentely. They made similar lighters and you can still buy new ones. They also seem quite popular with chinese copycats and u can get them in varrying degrees of quality.
I LOVE that you dont use music!! It is soothing to hear nothing but the silence and the sounds of the tools and you working!
Not that you'll see this but I think the audio is perfect
Thanks for the likes :D
too bad i saw this
Your right I didn’t see the audio

good video👍🏻 but maybe a before and after clip at the end 😁
True💯
By any chance was this from watching tysy tube lol 😂
Jake cool Beans you are right
Blooper was gold! Next time you're trying to remove dents out of something small like this, put the nail in a block of wood or clamp in a vice. Then hold the part over the nail and lightly tap on the part with a light weight hammer. Put one layer of tape on face of the hammer if you're worried about marring the surface. You'll have much better control this way and you can see the progress as it is made.
Don't feel bad.... You're not the first "restoration guy" to set himself on fire while making a video. LoL
Great work, good video quality and you set yourself on Fire... All and all a great job, keep it up¡! 👍🏻🔥
He could have easily edited it out, but i love that he kept it
@@littlesushie - Same here... It shows that he doesn't take himself too seriously and can laugh at himself, makes him feel more relatable cause I would've definitely put it in if it was me.
thank you for no music
@Septiceye JR so turn on the radio .
Septiceye JR why or how would it be awkward?
It's like DIY asmr
Asmr is better
ASMR is great for this 🙄🤷🏻♂️
I love that you show your mistakes. It's really awesome for those of use that are just getting into these kinds of projects.
In England that's called a "Tommy" lighter as it was first made and issued to WW1 Troops. It's actually better than a Zippo for keeping the flame lit in the wind.
That's the English-made version as evidenced by the thin strike wheel. Production moved to (I think) Brazil in the 70's and those later versions have a strike wheel which is at least 3 x as thick.
There is also a version for lighting pipes which is somewhat scarcer.
Best lighters I ever owned fo' sho' . . .
So, whats the brand for that lighter? I am living in Brazil, right now, and would love to get one. They have vospic lighters around here, but never saw something like that one...
@@Davedrifter Type 'Tommy Lighter' into Ebay, there are currently 7 available - all in the UK. Don't buy the £30 "WW2" one, it doesn't look right somehow.
I'm pointing you at Ebay cos I don't think they're available 'new' any more.
Also, if you're not aware, bear in mind that they use Lighter Fluid/Petrol and NOT Butane Gas . . .
I think it's an Austrian design from the interwar period that was altered and made cheaper to produce for British troops during World War 2. The Americans took this design and added a hinge and a spring loaded mechanism to open it.
@@gho95 That's a possibility. I've never seen an Austrian one - do you got any idea what name they went under?
@@TheGodsrighthandman I have absolutely no clue but I do know that they were fueled with Kerosene and became popular among Britain, Germany and America around 1923
You should start doing a before and after photo
In the thumbnail? I like not knowing what the final outcome will be until the end
j s s maybe in the end?
Yeah, side by side at the end of the video.

Volume was good, liked the comments you included among the way, great vid, thanks! 👊
Before you even started, that is a beautifully made lighter and how you brought it back to life was amazing, I'm a lighter collector so I love watching videos like this keep up the good work!
This is true craftsmanship, amazing how much work and effort is put into such a simple device.
It blew my mind when he started polishing it 🤯

This is way better than asmr. I find your videos so relaxing. 😂 keep up the good content!
The power of the thumbnail brought me here!
Haha. I do think its great too, but based on the analytics it's actually very average. You make great videos buddy, thanks for the inspiration!
@@OddTinkering Thank you! Keep it up.
What about the thumbnail? Nothing new really.
Yesssss two great restoration youtubes to watch!! I already watch your vids btw!
Rock on brother!
Excellent job where the video is concerned. No annoying music, like in so many other videos. A pleasure to watch!
Really nice job! I like that there's no music and I think your volume levels are spot on. I like to hear the process. Lovely lighter. ❤️
I agree, completely. Let the work speak for itself. The sounds are relaxing as is.
Wow! I'm not alone! :-)
@@ChateauShack There is actually quite a few comments pointing this out.
Thanks Maria
And I'm gonna go Ebay a old lighter , this was really insightful and thank you!
Denzell Rodgers dude has had me bidding on the rustiest ol lighters I can find on eBay
when you utilize machine that make lots of noise you can lower the volume by 50% or more because some people listen with headphones.
TysyTube Restoration puré t'es partout toi ^^ j'aime bien ton travail
Thanks for the tip! I didn't really consider most people have headphones. Also I saw a comment recommending using this thing called lowpass. In case you are not familiar with it, it's an audio effect which cuts off all high pitch noises, so the machine sounds are less irritating. I've used it also to reduce background noise. I thought you might find that useful too.
Its almost like a asmr video just listen it with the volume is fun and could make me sleep im sure with less ads and high noise
simple solution,dont use headphones,right?
Simple solution not so simple if you watch RUclips in a billeting area. Volume was fine (via headphones) and no annoying music. Cool resto!
Volume level is good, I like when you label what the liquids you're using are though. Great videos, mesmerising to watch!
Wonderful. I like the sound. Thank you for not having music.
I agree, the sound of tools and material is already music for me.
This channel is amazing. It is so meditative. And thanks for bringing all these wonderful objects back to life.
Thanks for not putting music on your video and the volume was great
Back in the 1960s, i bought a very similar lighter from the military disposal store. They were new unissued stock, and cost 50 cents still in the wrapper. I am now 66 years old, and I still have it.I like the idea of making a punch from a nail, excellent. Tony Australia.
@Jon Doe. I am a qualified jeweller, and there's not much about metalsmithing and polishing that i don't know. I did my apprenticeship with, and worked for, Fredrick March & co of Melbourne if you would care to check. Alternatively, i could send you a copy of my qualifications from the jewellers board of Melbourne. Very easy to snipe from the cover of an alias.
Ah. That was a really neat idea to use a rounded nail to get out dents. I'll be using that trick in the future when I'm fixing things up. Thank you for that!
Thanks! It's nice to hear my videos help other with their work too
As always tremendous videos. I love the text and the satisfying sounds. The sound level is always perfect! Thank you for the content
Great job, great sound, correct volume. Good inserts of printed info. You nailed it. Thanks.
Thanks Dennis, good to hear it's all good!
Well said
I usually watch with the computer on mute for personal reasons. I like how you put text up to read! However, when I do have the volume up, I am glad you don't play music. You're doing great. Thank you for sharing your videos! I enjoy them immensely!
Totally nice to watch someone take something ugly and make it beautiful again! If you feel the need to do a bigger project I have a 93 Nissan truck it needs a beauty treatment! Lol I’m kidding!
Susan Robertson I wish someone would do this to me
No you are not..
Thank you SO MUCH for not playing muzak in the background!
It's a part of the experience when watching videos as yours, to be able to enjoy the machines sounds and also the occasional silence.
The sound levels are good, keep up the good job!
Nice work, thin metal like that is difficult to work with. Volume was perfect for me - consistency is key. Thanks for the vid.
Thanks! Yes, whenever I edit I watch the end result without changing the volume level so I know the viewers shouldn't have to go up and down with the volume all the time.
I'm not a smoker yet I think old lighters are so cool. It's all about the designs and craftsmanship. I think I could happily be a collector of vintage lighters.
The fact you literally yourself on fire though 😂😂 I'm happy you're okay buddy, I love your restoration videos
I really love the restoration of these antique lighters; they look so good too. Kinda makes me wanna start collecting them.
Repair a lighter, gets bioshock plasmid skills ;) Great video, cheers :D
Very cool. Your attention to detail is impressive. Handmade and restored items from skilled craftsmen always seem to hold value.
All of your videos are unintentional ASMR
I like it that you sometimes have to make your own special tool. A craftsman.
Yup, this video fits every category of your name. It is a stuff, it is diy, and it sure is cool!
Haha, That name is actually just a project name to get me started on making videos and not sitting and thinking what is perfect name. I was supposed to change it ages, I will most likely change it in future now that I'm doing videos (almost) every week.
It's not Do it yourself, it's do it himself
One of few videos I watch in its entirety. A few I buzz through but mostly I watch them all. I restore a lighter once in awhile but they are in very good shape to start with. Your accident reminds me of a time I was in a multi-level parking lot filling my butane lighter. There was a lot of static electricity in the air and the blow back of butane ignited. My head to my waist caught on fire. I was movin Jack! Only burned my arm hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes. Being on fire is a TRIP! Like you I was moving at warp speed.😂
I watched it at 2x.. consider it. Great job! Amazing restoration
I always watch restoration videos at 2x lol
i think it’s better to make the choice to watch at 2x not it just be at it already except maybe a few bits rather than the whole thing
I like how u explain every step of the way that's what a lot of other peoples restoration videos lack and the volume was perfect keep up the great work and have a nice day

The extra lighter fluid tank reminded me of a lighter that my father used to own.
Glad your hand was not badly burnt also.
Not every day you get to tell someone "I got caught on fire."
audio is perfect! so happy I stumbled on this and love seeing someone put so much care into restoring something! PLEASE never stop ❤️ love the no music as well! makes it much more genuine and authentic!
R.I.P finger 2019-2019
I love these lighter videos. I have an old similar style lighter I picked up in Vietnam many years ago. I think I will try my hand at restoring it. It's still in great shape. I was showing my fellow soldiers the lighter, when one asked how it worked. When I pulled the end cap it was a tight fit. Finally I gave it one more hard tug, and the cap came off with a loud pop. Everyone jumped back thinking it was booby trapped. Gotta admit, scared me too, but it worked. One solder stated, damn LT, you're the Plt leader, your supposed to be setting the example . Take care...Ken
You are one clever geezer...to restore a knackered lighter

I love your attention to every little detail. I am so sorry you got burned by it and hope you are okay. Maybe there was a leak in the welds somewhere. What a beautiful lighter you created in spite of the mishap! 🤗🇦🇺
Could you have used car compound and a buffing wheel instead of sand paper? Less metal loss.
Great job!
Robert Burns>> I was wishing he'd had some jeweler's rouge and a rag wheel for the final polish.
This video is so nice and quiet. I was expecting some loud abomination to the music industry so this is quite refreshing.

Thanks! This is very important to hear from more than only one viewer because now I know there is probably no need to change anything with the volume levels.
This lighter restoration is very nice! It looks very classy! Good job
When it said “there will be a blooper on the end” I just knew it would be **that** blooper.
Funny nevertheless, reminds me from when I was younger, common rookie mistake 😉
Audio is great! This was really fun to watch. My dad has one of these from when he was younger and it's dented and scratched in the same way! It's cool to see what it would've looked like shiny and brand new!

Very nice lighter!
Came out shiny enough to see yourself!
I run into that same problem with nasty old flints.
Corroded to the shaft, and it takes a while to drill and scrape them out.
Thanx for the great vid! :D
5:28 It's good to know that he uses winegar (aka the Winners Vinegar) too : )
You were the first channel I watched for restoration, and in my opinion, I would say probably the best
May I put you wise to something? This is called a slow seep lighter. ordinarily, you do not fill the upper portion with fluid, only the bottom part. When correctly filled with cotton, the bottom fill keeps seeping into the rest, keeping it filled as long as the tank lasts. Is this a KW lighter or a copy? Many copies were made, many from Japan. the Japan copies are not of as high quality. You can use ordinary cotton balls to refill the cotton, but don't just stuff them in. they will come apart if you break the outer part, and turn into rolled up strips of fluffy cotton. Do not over pack, leave some room for fluid, especially on this one, do not over pack it will make the lighter not work properly. Its okay to put some fluid in the top portion when redoing them, otherwise you have to wait a while for the slow seep process to start working. just a little tho, you' found out why...lol... i have to laugh, but an when photographing a lighter to post on ebay, I was using a portable photo booth made from some fabric that goes up very easily. I sparked the lighter to show it lit, but apparently an errant spark hit the fabric, and the whole thing went up and nearly took my kitchen with it, did lose the kitchen curtains. I do not use such a photo booth any more, and will not. it was some kind of polyester that burns easily and quickly.
The first thing to check for in any vintage lighter is a corroded flint stuck in the tube. I use a straight piece of coat hanger wire. sometimes, pushing with the wire will do the trick, other times I have to chuck the wire in a drill and grind out the old flint. Never use a drill bit, you wind up drilling where you don't want to and ruining the lighter. Sometimes even a hanger wire can do that, but it's safer than a regular hard drill bit, and will even work in curved tubes if it's the kind that is more flexible I have used pieces of bass guitar string to drill out flints with really curved tubes. For brass lighters, bring a 50 50 mix of vinegar and water to a near boil, and put the lighter in. This removes or at least softens any of the old black corrosion. For silver and silver plated lighters, use a piece of aluminum foil in the bottom of a pan and add one tablespoon (or more) of baking soda to the water. Make sure the lighter or other item is covered and on the foil. The black corrosion will transfer to the foil. if the foil gets completely black before the item is clean, you must replace the foil and go again. With the vinegar and water solution, save it. As it is heated the water vaporized and the acid in the vinegar does not, so it actually gets stronger over time.
If you have questions about lighters, feel free to ask. I've restored hundreds of them. tootall1121@yahoo.com I have some very unique ones as well as the more common ones.
The volume is just perfection!
I like to watch before i fall a sleep sometimes so its nice to not have a tool wake you up ;)

Где твои перчатки?)
the cap is probably long to leave some space for the flame... you put the cap on while it's lit, it will extinguish the lighter. if there was less space it would push flame out the side on your fingers.... zippos also have a lot of space above the wick for that reason
