This amp is right up my alley. I am an aging metal-head, well into my 50s now. I have a Katana for my bedroom amp and love it, but I often wish for something simpler. I miss the days when my only options were loud and more loud, lol!
I have a Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue, for which I made a paper overlay for the controls (couldn't read the silver plate under lights, plus the writing was upside down). I labelled the two inputs "loud" and "even louder"!
Couldn't agree more. I already have tons of money sunk into analog pedals. As nice as the Katana is, I prefer the amp that will sound better with my existing pedals. And it has an FX loop, which is rare for an amp that costs less than $500. The only real competitor to the Blackstar is the Orange 35RT which arguably sounds better with dark dirty tones but besides that it falls short. The Orange does have an FX loop, but it only has reverb no other built in effects. It doesn't have the power limiter so it's on 35w all the time. Way to loud for a practice amp. It's a solid state but it's not purely analog. It has digital chips in it too, such as the built in digital reverb. And to top it off the Orange costs about $60 more than the Blackstar when u include tax. I had been saving up for a Katana 100 Gen 3. I was mainly interested in using a combo of real pedals into the FX loop paired with the modeling effects but I've heard negative reviews. After stumbling on this Blackstar there's no question. It's very rare to find a practice sized amp that includes an FX loop. Especially at this price. Total no brainer. It's literally the perfect budget/practice amp for shoegaze and ambient. The FX loop & 5watt option are perfect for bedroom shoegazing. You could even gig with it. But I already have an AC30 for that. It's simply too loud to use indoors fire practice lol.
I must say as a new sub. I really like how you demo this amp .. no 30 mins of pointless solo noodling but a great variation of nice and solid different rhythm guitar! great job
Absolutely. I want front mounted controls. I need to be able to look at my settings and I usually have a couple combo amps stacked on a speaker cab. I play a Spider IV and did not like when Line 6 put the controls on top of Catalyst, it's a dealbreaker.

Highly impressive demonstration. You have proved the point on how to sound good. It’s a simple equation. Tone = decent guitar+decent amp x talent(squared) !
I tested this one this afternoon. I am a disabled army veteran, and carrying around my Randall Rg75 G3 is not worth its massive distortion and crystal clean. I tested it with a strat and a tele. Better than expected! And I could see me pushing a wah & DS-1 in front and a chorus & delay through the fx loop. Or use the whole pedal rig in front of it, like an old loopless amp. Sounds LOUD and CLEAR!
Obviously, it's not a Katana killer because it's a different type of amp. But it's pretty good, and not even only for beginners. Good sounds, simple to use, what more could you ask for?
I'd argue this amp isn't aimed at "beginners", although they could use it too with its 5W switch. Intermediate through advanced players would get a lot out of this amp.
@@theblytonian3906 It's called Debut, but I agree with you. A beginner might benefit more from a modelling amp, because they could try more amps. Someone who's played a while and knows what they want from an amp, this amp would suit them more. Although, if you're a beginner and want an amp that's not a modelling amp, this one could be an option, it's on the affordable side.

A connitation of a 'beginners' product tends to be a sales dampener outside that demographic. Agree with what you say. My view is that beginners will choose a modelling amp 90% of the time due to reading spec tech & reviews impact upon thrir inexperience driven perception as better. This is a good amp for those past that looking for something specific, although still inargusbly useful for a beginner wanting just whst it is.
Boss Tone central doesn't work with windows 7 so I'm left with the power amp and some pedals. I'm planning to sell my katakana to purchase something else.
In my opinion the Black Star techs are great since working with Jim Marshall until two years before his passing. Marshall is great but so are Black Star amps. Usage is costly but tone is awesome, like having a true Marshall plus more with the ISP which is really only a form of parametric function.
Man, great demo. At the end of the day most modeling amps or all in ones leave me cold. I love that these Blackstars are what they are, straightforward with killer sound. Actually really like both channels lol!! Again great demo made possible by great playing. Subbed.
Seems like a great combo. I totally understand how they need to build to a consumer price point to earn a share of the buyers. I just wish they would offer a Debut 50 R pro model that would include the very best of a 12" they could possibly find for this application. The generic one here I'm sure is fine for most folks, but another $20 would be a big difference to a big slice of the market. Instead I look at this amp and I realize I would likely swap out the speaker for something higher performance adding another $120 and the hassle.

Late to the party, but wow, it does sound like a tube amp as I am listening through my Bose headphones! I have a few blackstar HT venue series amps; studio 20 combo, the same 20 but in head/cab set, and a club 40 combo. I love them all! That's all I bring to the stage, nothing else needed...well, except a few good pedals, too 😊
I've always been pretty much a Fender amp fan. Still like them, though I feel the quality has slipped a bit. Been looking at the Blackstars and Marshall's, as well as Orange. For the bucks, think the Black's offer that bit more, especially in this wattage area. Anyway, ordered one in black... onward and upward! Thanks for the excellent video!
Undecided. Some of it I liked. Some, I'm not sure. I'd like to try one. It seems to be a Blackstar version of Orange's Crush series. I'd like to see them, Blackstar, offer something similar to the SC100 with separate EQs and master volume. And hopefully less expensive.
You assert that the problem with the Katana and Catalyst, is they sound better with the modeled pedals, than the real ones AND that a Mosfet amp like this rectifies that. FIrst ,I would disagree in part, they sound different than a tube amp, well respond different. But then A BF Fender responds different to a TS, than a JCM800 does. But then, you go and NOT demo this amp with drive pedals. I also don't get the 50 and 5 watt settings. The one is potentially not enough for gigging, and the other probably too loud for home/apt use.
I got the Black Star when it first came out I liked it I already had a boss katana, and although it's got the nice tube amp sound I still like the solid-state basket on others Endless Possibilities when you hook a Looper pedal up to their endless is so fun
Digital? Solid state? Tube tone is original. I own the HT-5 since 2012 and it is my main tone using both digital and analog tone thru the supplied in out jacks in rear. Of course I've been experimenting and found the best tones via Black Star and pedals into the Marshall but the secret is true experiment and understanding in out process.

Hey mate . Cool review.. I been looking at this amp the last few days.. I'm pretty sold on it as I'm just a old man at home alone playing.. I have the crickets bad In me ears.. so the 5wat switching is a good thing for me.. I run a PDF2 a OS-2 and M-fuzz into a Fender accousticsonic 40 atm.. with two guitars with P90s.. I'm a bit confused about the mention of the back inputs .. thanks heaps

It’s definitely a lot more straight forward and user friendly. They’re very different amps but both sound great. This one probably sounds like the better option for you from what you said 😊

Nice demo. The comment on analog equipment not getting along well with digital, like pedals and amps, is totally random and without a base. Put an H9 in front of an old Marshall and tell it doesn't sound right. Put an analog EQ/delay/compressor in front of a modeling amp and tell it doesn't sound right.

I really don’t think bs mans to take on katana with this. They have their modelling amps for that. Whether or not katana is digital doesn’t matter it’s a modeller. I think this is more geared towards the orange crush specifically the cr60. I think mosfet ss is a really great sound. But in general it’s nice to see ss come back there’s some really great ss amps out there but those aren’t always cheap like the high end orange crush series or the Roland jc. It’s nice to see a great sounding ss for the money. I think Marshall should go back to making mosfet s amps like they were in the 80s. Those have a cult following now. A direct reissue of those amps would be ideal and same with the original master lead from the 70s. Those amps may be solid state but they sounded incredible. Too bad tube snobs made sure ss amps would remain an obscure thing. Not all tube amps sound great either I’d take this over a Marshall origin or a bugera
"Mid-priced"? It's £199 in Andertons. That's pocket money. I do like the look of this amp, and really dislike digital modelling. Bizarrely, the very low price is a little bit worrying though! I'd be concerned about it simply not being up to the job. Costlier alternatives might be the Orange Crush Pro CR100, or the Award-Session Blues Baby, and before splashing out on the Blackstar, I'd be inclined to compare it against something higher up the price scale. Very snobbish, I know.

Yeah I messed up there. The only bit of info I didn't have was an exact price and I misread something and thought it was more expensive than it was. I was very surprised when I saw the low price too.
Katana 50 doesn't have an efx loop, so this makes it very interesting as powerstage for a multiefx/modeller IMO. I wish all combos came with tilt legs...😐
Just get a Blackstar HT-5 MK2 there's bigger versions to if you need more wattage but it's got everything this has effects loop takes pedals well two channels etc and it's a tube amp although I don't think all tube but it's pretty perfect 🤘
BStar HT-5 MkII is as great amp (I have one myself) but big price difference and in fairness, the HT-5 is semi-solid state anyway, so in many ways, this amp may make more sense at this price point.
Man, this is really sick. Best transistor amp I've heard since the crush pro, and even that had kind of an icepicky high end to it. edit: know how much it weighs? Can't seem to find out.

I bet that sounded great! I’ve tried a few through the full size 1960a cabs too and I’ve always been impressed with them. Are Randall still making amps? I thought they weren’t really in business any more. They’re definitely an underrated brand.
Is that silver flake HB as sweet as it looks? It’s hard to tell differences in pups on RUclips. Are those tesla roswell? Is that roasted maple neck as nice as it appears? 😊
It really is. I put up a video on it recently that might be worth checking out if you're interested in the guitar. It's so much better than I was expecting and I've ended up using it loads. They're the Roswell Alnico 5 PAF style. Wasn't too sure about them at first but now I really like them. I'm used to higher output pickups in this style of guitar but the lower output PAF style works well. The roasted flame maple neck and fretboard is amazing! Thanks for the comment!

First- good demo video. Second- Is it just me, or does pretty much every non-tube amp sound the same these days? So it boils down to reliability maybe... I have a MK1 Katana 100w 2x12 and tried the Blackstar last week and really was no comparison - my Katana killed it, plus I can record directly into my computer. Was really underwhelmed - my old Marshall valvestate and Orange Crush were both better too. Not for me!
Boss Katana is not a digital amp ! It is an solid-state amp with digital effects ! And I would be very surprised if the Blackstar could out do it in any department:)
Katana is classed as a digital amp. This is pure analogue as is the orange crush. If you have a blackstar debut or orange crush you have traditional all analogue amplification. If you have a katana you are in the digital bracket like fender mustang, line 6 spider etc.. And then (when expirenced enough to handle it) you get your full valve like hot rod, marshall dsl etc..Katana is recognised as a digital modelling amp, tube logic programmed in to it etc.. Flash memory built in like a laptop. This debut is pure analogue.
Sorry but you’re buying into Boss marketing BS. I’m quoting directly from someone that’s worked on them.. “The Katana doesn't have an analog preamp, It has an analog input buffer. But that then goes into the innards of a GT100 - and that then outputs to the power amp. Essentially it's a GT100 with a poweramp.” The Boss Nextone is analogue though, and really very good. Be keen to compare the Blackstar with my Nextone some day.

How would this sound as loudspeaker for a line 6 helix basically to just make it louder? helix into clean amp. Maybe would benefit from a speaker upgrade
I tried it, I thought it worked really well. Output of my HXS with the cab sims/IRs turned off, into the effects return. Sounded really great. (Only tried at home volumes not gig levels)

Priced very right. Huge Blackstar fan already. I have too many amps, but I would love one of these and get so much use out of it.

Old Roland Cube used Field Effect Transistors (FETs). People often say those were great amps. Blackstar may be on to something.

The Blackstar puts the katana to shame on tone and feel. That's all that matters to me.

Nice demo. The comment on analog equipment not getting along well with digital, like pedals and amps, is totally random and without a base. Put an H9 in front of an old Marshall and tell it doesn't sound right. Put an analog EQ/delay/compressor in front of a modeling amp and tell it doesn't sound right.
Yeah it’d be random if it wasn’t the subject of my video… 😂 Base? The base is MY experience (seeing as it’s MY video) Yes using the effect with an analog amp sounds good (entire point of the video) and yes I’ll happily put an analog effect in front of a modeller and tell you it doesn’t sound right to me. 😂 great comment though!
I really don’t think bs mans to take on katana with this. They have their modelling amps for that. Whether or not katana is digital doesn’t matter it’s a modeller. I think this is more geared towards the orange crush specifically the cr60. I think mosfet ss is a really great sound. But in general it’s nice to see ss come back there’s some really great ss amps out there but those aren’t always cheap like the high end orange crush series or the Roland jc. It’s nice to see a great sounding ss for the money. I think Marshall should go back to making mosfet s amps like they were in the 80s. Those have a cult following now. A direct reissue of those amps would be ideal and same with the original master lead from the 70s. Those amps may be solid state but they sounded incredible. Too bad tube snobs made sure ss amps would remain an obscure thing. Not all tube amps sound great either I’d take this over a Marshall origin or a bugera
"Mid-priced"? It's £199 in Andertons. That's pocket money. I do like the look of this amp, and really dislike digital modelling. Bizarrely, the very low price is a little bit worrying though! I'd be concerned about it simply not being up to the job. Costlier alternatives might be the Orange Crush Pro CR100, or the Award-Session Blues Baby, and before splashing out on the Blackstar, I'd be inclined to compare it against something higher up the price scale. Very snobbish, I know.
It's mosfet, probably made of MDF and the clearest budget cut came in form of the unbranded speaker

Yeah I messed up there. The only bit of info I didn't have was an exact price and I misread something and thought it was more expensive than it was. I was very surprised when I saw the low price too.
It's not digital it's all analogue..
Shame there's no speaker out socket so you can run it through a 2x12 etc..

Definitely better than the katana
Katana 50 doesn't have an efx loop, so this makes it very interesting as powerstage for a multiefx/modeller IMO. I wish all combos came with tilt legs...😐
The Katana does have a power amp in on all models of the MKII series. Which would do as you suggest.

Just get a Blackstar HT-5 MK2 there's bigger versions to if you need more wattage but it's got everything this has effects loop takes pedals well two channels etc and it's a tube amp although I don't think all tube but it's pretty perfect 🤘
BStar HT-5 MkII is as great amp (I have one myself) but big price difference and in fairness, the HT-5 is semi-solid state anyway, so in many ways, this amp may make more sense at this price point.
Different tool at a much higher pricepoint. Really got to want a HT-5 Mk II to buy one. Aimed at a completely different niche guitarist.

Had a Marshall mosfet 100 with 1960 4x12 and it was beast. One of the few amps I wish I hadn’t sold. Randall also makes some great solid state amps
I bet that sounded great! I’ve tried a few through the full size 1960a cabs too and I’ve always been impressed with them. Are Randall still making amps? I thought they weren’t really in business any more. They’re definitely an underrated brand.

Is that silver flake HB as sweet as it looks? It’s hard to tell differences in pups on RUclips. Are those tesla roswell? Is that roasted maple neck as nice as it appears? 😊
It really is. I put up a video on it recently that might be worth checking out if you're interested in the guitar. It's so much better than I was expecting and I've ended up using it loads. They're the Roswell Alnico 5 PAF style. Wasn't too sure about them at first but now I really like them. I'm used to higher output pickups in this style of guitar but the lower output PAF style works well. The roasted flame maple neck and fretboard is amazing! Thanks for the comment!

First- good demo video. Second- Is it just me, or does pretty much every non-tube amp sound the same these days? So it boils down to reliability maybe... I think that both Boss and Blackstar are in the highly reliable category. Put 2 pictures on the wall and throw a dart. Decisions made easy. Cheers all!

I have a MK1 Katana 100w 2x12 and tried the Blackstar last week and really was no comparison - my Katana killed it, plus I can record directly into my computer. Was really underwhelmed - my old Marshall valvestate and Orange Crush were both better too. Not for me!

It seems it uses a 4 Ohm speaker, Celestion doesn't offer a 4 Ohm greenback to my knowledge.
Boss Katana is not a digital amp ! It is an solid-state amp with digital effects ! And I would be very surprised if the Blackstar could out do it in any department:)

Katana is classed as a digital amp. This is pure analogue as is the orange crush. If you have a blackstar debut or orange crush you have traditional all analogue amplification. If you have a katana you are in the digital bracket like fender mustang, line 6 spider etc.. And then (when expirenced
enough to handle it) you get your full valve like hot rod, marshall dsl etc..Katana is recognised as a digital modelling amp, tube logic programmed in to it etc.. Flash memory built in like a laptop. This debut is pure analogue.
Katana has an analog power amp section. The effects are digital. The power section is a Class A-B analog.

Sorry but you’re buying into Boss marketing BS. I’m quoting directly from someone that’s worked on them.. “The Katana doesn't have an analog preamp, It has an analog input buffer. But that then goes into the innards of a GT100 - and that then outputs to the power amp.
Essentially it's a GT100 with a poweramp.”
The Boss Nextone is analogue though, and really very good. Be keen to compare the Blackstar with my Nextone some day.

How would this sound as loudspeaker for a line 6 helix basically to just make it louder? helix into clean amp. Maybe would benefit from a speaker upgrade
I tried it, I thought it worked really well. Output of my HXS with the cab sims/IRs turned off, into the effects return. Sounded really great. (Only tried at home volumes not gig levels)

katanas aren't modeling amps they use analog power amps and preamps and don't model the amp tones though they do the effects.
Katana is king! Just traded my Spark for a Mk II and have NO regrets.
My tube amp makes a much better one trick pony. Katana is not a modeling amp(although it has digital effects).
