I remember 6 years ago at 50 y/o I had a pour of Whiskey/Bourbon for the first time since college and I actually liked it. That started my journey of collecting. I wasted a lot of money before becoming educated about Whiskey/Bourbon. I now have over 600 bottles and have given away over 100 that I did not care for. I have 2 Speak-Easy's at 2 out of 3 homes. I am hooked!
Proper 12 does not claim to be 12 years. It's because... he's from the Dublin surburb of Cremlin meaning that 12 is the area code in Dublin where McGregor grew up. (Thanks to you guys I TOTALLY get out on all things whiskey now. But I'm digging it.)
I love how the Elijah Craig Small Batch bottle you used as your exemplar is the smallest of all possible small batches - it is a single barrel expression and therefore not even batched with anything before being bottled. I suppose the ~250 bottles they got out of that barrel might be considered a small batch. Ugh. Given all the regulations on whiskey labels in America it is stunning that labels are still covered with meaningless marketing terms to dodge transparency or ride the wave of current trends.
I always thought Straight bourbon had to be aged at least two years, and if less than 4 years it had to have the age listed on the label. That's why AAA 10 Star and Benchmark both say something like "Aged at least 36 months".
I called 1920 before the first pour. Not at all surprised. It outpunches its weight EVERY time. When I want to go get people to try a good bourbon that will get them “into” bourbon-1920 is my go to. It has never disappointed.
When I was first getting into bourbon I asked the “liquor store bro” for a recommendation and he recommended Old Charter because “it’s one of the only age stated bourbons you can get for under $25”. Boy did I fall for that one!
🤣 As soon as you said celebrity I thought, "not Nick Offerman". So glad you clarified. Actually Longbranch was not too bad either although Matthew McConaughey is no longer affiliated.
Old Charter is a bottle I would have never even considered buying BECAUSE I thought it was 8 year old whiskey and I assumed something had to be wrong with it to be that cheap lmao.
I’m skeptical about “single barrel” as well. You’d think it would come from one barrel. Should be 200-250 bottles with some identifying mark about which bottle it came from. I listened to a podcast by a craft distiller from Chicago and her answer to the question “what does single barrel mean” never mentioned “it comes from a single barrel.” She danced all around it.
For some reason, I thought companies were legally required to list state of distillation. Not sure why I got that in my head, but I really feel like that should be a requirement. Also, side note: (similar to the Kentucky Owl) my bottle of Blue Run Golden Rye just simply says "hand bottled in Bardstown KY" no "produced" or "distilled" on the bottle.
The TTB regulatory people have been a bit lax of late (probably just overrun with label approval requests) and have let some things slide. I have come across that if you happen to source from a distillery that also happens to be in your state (*cough* cough* Kentucky) you do not legally need to relate that fact on the bottle.
I'm actually a big fan of the blackened line. Their rye in particular. I've been on the hunt for their cask strength because I like their base product so much. Coming to Ohio soon, so I cant wait. Got a Wes Henderson on hold for me whenever my Uncle comes up from Florida.
That blackened wes henderson is really really good. I stayed away from it because it was a "Metallica whiskey", but my brother bought it, and i was really shocked how good it was. The rye the lightening, not so much. Its ok. The Wes Henderson one is damn good tho
How did we skip right over Jefferson's?? You know how many whiskey noobs get completely bamboozled by their marketing??? "Very Old. "Very small batch"... "Aged at Sea"... the list goes on!!!
So with the Blade and Bow I will say this, I’ve been on a tour there probably 6times ish and every guide there has touted or pushed Blade as their offering so it is kind of the only bourbon offering claimed by that old historic distillery, “always take photos in Julian’s old office” so I totally get where you’re coming from but I feel like just based on the history of that place, we should cut them some slack, if for no other reason than me sort of being able to almost convince myself that this wonderful historic distillery is still chugging along in some way
I forget which bourbon it was, but the bottle said Aged LESS THAN (whithout caps) 4 years on the back. I thought that was hilarious and a clear attempt at deception if you're just looking for a number.
@@BourbonJunkies that would be awesome, bourbon bottles are all so serious. You can make it so outrageous It's obvious it's a joke like "aged less than ONE HUNDRED YEARS" 😂
"Reserve" is just as bad as small batch. "blender's batch" is something I see more. I'd hope the blender has a say in all blends at the distillery. "Premium", "select", "hand crafted". "Cigar blends" are getting out of hand and mean nothing.
American whiskey is a total mess regulation wise. You definitely need federal regulations to confirm; Distilled by, mash bill, age, filtration, colouring? This will help define your product and promote sales. People need to know what they are buying. In Europe and every other serious whiskey/whisky making country including Scotland, they have very clear and accurate information that empowers whisky/whiskey geeks
Its kind of funny because I could not stand Blade and Bow. I was gifted it by my wife because well it was basically the perfect bottle being that I love knives, shoot archery literally every day and love whiskey. If there was ever a bottle I wanted to love more and was utterly failed was Blade and Bow. As a gift it was perfect 10/10 she could not have selected anything else that would be any less perfect fit but the flavor was just meh to me.
It's a sock he got into a fight and I took him to the vet they said the best thing for his neck would be to put a sock around it because a cone will irritate it.
"they're just buying another product line to sell to someone. It's another source of income for them." So, kinda like Virture Spirits? I mean, without the celebrity part of course... /s
@@BourbonJunkies 100% guaranteed. Celebreties just wanna sign some paperwork and collect money when they sell the brand (aviation?)... I only buy a bottle if it is a "Limited Special Reserve Small Batch Select Straight Blend". That's when I know I found something worth my money.
As Matt Porter would say "You son of a batch..."
I have a suspicion that the infinity blends are not infinity years old as well.
The Bottled In Bond act is fantastic, their needs to be more consumer protection legislation. 👍
The kitty is adorable and I liked the video just because it was on-screen chilling followed by demanding attention.
13:40 that tail action! 😂👍

0:03 Dans leg was still at a 90 degree angle at the peak of the kick
This man is a legend
I would add Heaven's Door to the list of exceptions on celebrity whiskey. Had some killer single barrels from them.
Wild shot, Mezcal by that country singer is the worst thing that has ever been put in a bottle
Proper 12 is named that because McGregor grew up in a suburb of Dublin called Crumlin, or Dublin 12. Fun facts 😂
Knob Creek Single Barrels sold with Small Batch in raised glass lettering on the same bottle…
* *goes to bar area to check...* * OMG! HOW DID I MISS THIS?! 😂

I'm just waiting for the day that Cookie knocks a bottle or a glass off the counter. This cat is too chill.
Great video, this information is very valuable indeed.

Most of the single barrel stuff I buy does have barrel numbers on them. To be safe, I try to buy store picks when I can.

Love the content. When is Virtue going to be released
There is even a bourbon bottle shaped like a baseball. The clerk didnt recommend it😅
We have four different kentucky owl after Dixon left and they will not sell! No one even asks about them now!
People are starting to catch on about Kentucky Owl. Cool label, not worth the price.
I think the biggest factor contributing to the lack of Bourbon transparency is the barrel aging.
Fancy packaging always gets me :(
I learned in my college course small batch is a set of 50 preselected barrels per “batch” but I could be misremembering that
proper 12 is named after the area conor is from -dublin 12
wait what? I've been hoarding makers 46 thinking they were 46 years old minimum
🤔
😂🤣
😂
Almost picked up a bottle of that Kentucky Owl St. Patrick’s Day just to try it. Price is around $85 at my local store.
That cat is hilarious.
Brothers bond is a drain pour. i dont say that often. actually never. but that is one.
Great info as always. Thx you
I always thought straight meant two years minimum not one and that's what I'm seeing on wikipedia now
Awesome episode thanks for exposing the secrets
Fake numbers that aren't age statements is something to watch out for in rum. Looking at you Flor De Cana 18
I kinda like the interest that is taken in by "Cookie Cat"! She must shop pretty often herself!
I think that cat wanted a pour. Purr for a pour.
Superb batch for the win! Nice.
Age statements should be mandatory, and where distilled

@bourbonjunkies what's the name of the ~$300 celebrity whisky that Dan mumbled? I'm burning up work time trying to figure it out 😅
Surprised there’s no “very old Barton” or “Jefferson’s very small batch”
Appreciate people in the know pointing out blatant BS in the whiskey community.
Not the same for the Blackened cigar from Drew Estates. Fabulous celebrity cigar.
Cool labels always get me. Orphan Barrel anyone? Fable and Folly was almost undrinkable, but cool label.
Kentucky Owl really went down hill loo
Great idea for a vid, guys!
Drinking Michters Rye right now. It says, 'bottled by Michters Distillery LLC'.
Proper 12 references the district or area code Conor grew up in and made it out of.
Great video as always! Calling out the “tomfoolery”!! What do you guys think about Longbranch as celebrity (until recently) bourbon?
“tomfoolery” 😂 Not to be confused with ‘Tom’s Foolery Ohio Straight Bourbon Whiskey’
What's up with Knox Sean?
I got fooled by the Dickle 12. Had it for 3 years thinking it was a 12 year old bourbon. It’s not good
How did we skip right over Jefferson's?? You know how many whiskey noobs get completely bamboozled by their marketing??? "Very Old. "Very small batch"... "Aged at Sea"... the list goes on!!!
Isn’t that EC a store pick single barrel at 94 proof?
Hope u two held onto sticks I gave ya and Seanpire I got to try that 88 JD thanks alot bub
"That's a *huge* *batch* "

I know what you're talking about, Dan and I laughed about it. Said we should just put aged less than 20 years on our stuff
@@BourbonJunkies that would be awesome, bourbon bottles are all so serious. You can make it so outrageous It's obvious it's a joke like "aged less than ONE HUNDRED YEARS" 😂
Special batch instead of small batch.
Love Cookie! My 4 🐱's say meow!
Proper 12...the 12 is for McGregor's hometown area code 😂
I never understood why brands abandoned "straight Kentucky bourbon" for "small batch."
What is ur whiskey i wanna buy it
They should call it huge batch....
Someone needs to buy Dan a comb so he doesn’t have to do it with his fingers 😅
Longbranch and now Carrol Shelby..Jeeze what's next..😂
I hear that Eric Church Jypsi is good
What the heck is around Cookie's neck?
Big batch. Standard batch. Select batch. Batched Blend. But not "small batch" when it's big business.
Is your stuff considered "celebrity" whiskey?
🤣😂 no
"Reserve" is just as bad as small batch. "blender's batch" is something I see more. I'd hope the blender has a say in all blends at the distillery.

how far has KO fallen.... I saw that Irish colab and laughed.
Dan is becoming the Bert Kriescher of whiskeytube
But Dan is funny
Just like OKI new batches "single barrel" lol
Did someone tie a sock around Cookie's neck?
Even the cat sees through the bullshit
Do you all keep your bottles in a bucket of water? All of the labels seemed to be wrinkled.
I'm beginning to think that Cookie wants his own channel.

There are some, mentioned in the video but apparently selectively enforced.
Old charter sucks.
I had 1 pour out of mine and left it for my cousin to drink because he's poor an will drink whatever's there
No interest in Kentucky Owl without DD

You don't have to lie if your whiskey is worth a damn. Oversight and accountability are lost these days. Needs to return.
Why does that cat have a bungee cord wrapped around its neck?
It's a sock, he had a wound on his neck that needed to heal.
It's a sock he got into a fight and I took him to the vet they said the best thing for his neck would be to put a sock around it because a cone will irritate it.
Wish whiskey-tubers would take the same approach about not using clickbait video titles and thumbnails.

Allwrong, Allwrong, Allwrong. Stuff is just over priced WT, still has that nasty wet dog moldy taste all WT products have.
