Reflecting on the Sly Cooper Franchise

  • With rumors floating around mentioning that Sly Cooper may be on its way to the PlayStation 5, it is time to reflect. This is one of my all time favorite video game franchises as you fill the shoes of Sly Cooper, thieving your way through various locales with the help of Bentley and Murray. The writing is criminally underrated, the gameplay design is impeccable, and that art style has aged wonderfully.

For Sly Cooper 4, I absolutely agree with you and I don’t agree with half the Sly Fan base. I enjoyed that game, I never understood some of people’s complaints.
Let’s be honest sucker punch wasn’t going to do a sly 4 and it looked like a very long time that we weren’t getting a 4th game. Not until 8 years later after the 3rd one we got a new entire from a different company, this was their first sly game after doing the collection, and it’s literally just more of the same, but this was their first time and it was good. They stepped up to the plate to actually make a sly 4 when nobody else was. I bet giving Sanzaru games another sequel they would go and improve even more than before. But now that doesn’t seem like that is possible for them anymore.

The first sly cooper has the best antagonist of course. The overall story is the best of the series. Sly 2 has the best subplots. You had me until the defense of Thieves in Time’s story and terrible cliffhanger. This is a prime example of what you DON’T do to continue a beloved cohesive series, it is almost as bad as Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League or Disney’s Star Wars trilogy which are all indefensible Marxist/woke garbage. Another commenter is correct that TiT has actual misogynistic undertones in how it treats its female characters, which shows that the pendulum has swung too far in the other direction years later.

Beyond the Penelope storyline, there are other flaws with Sly 4 that you didn’t mention:
    1. The gameplay in general feels floatier; much different from the previous 3 games.
    2. The dialogue is legitimately awful compared to the previous games.
    3. Some of the missions are just flat-out weird, like the missions where Murray and Carmelita belly dance.
    4. Personally, I wasn’t a fan of some of the added mechanics, like the new hackathons or the shooting missions.

Sly 4 was awesome, as was the rest of the series. I don't understand the dislike it gets- even the penelole twist wasn't TOO farfetched when you take into account that they originally met her on a shady chat room, she used foul pay to always win the ACES contests, and was constantly fangirling for Sly. For all we know she joined the Cooper Gang solely to get a cut of the Cooper fortune and was disappointed when Sly disbanded the gang as it meant no more payoffs. Obviously her love for Bentley was genuine though.

Sly 4 honestly did deserve a lot better than it got. It was a legitimately fun game, some hampering from PS3 hardware aside, but the changes ended up polarizing the remaining fanbase, and now it's arguably the punching bag that "killed" the series. Which is a shame, because I remember feeling like it was made by legitimately caring fans of the series too, Sucker Punch gave them their blessing in the first place to keep up the work after trying so hard and putting as much care as they could into the HD Version of the original trilogy. If it came out a few years earlier into the Playstation's life cycle, it might have done better, seeing as the desire for a sequel might have been newer on top of maybe nostalgia glasses on the original trilogy might have made some of the older fans react... well, as any nostalgic fan does. I was honestly glad to have the characters and gameplay back, even if they didn't feel the same as they did on the PS2 for obvious reasons.
3 might still be my favorite on virtue of its writing and levels alone, but damn, these games were great. And it was nice to see a bit of more love towards them, including the one that may have had a misfortune of going down in history as the bad one (which it wasn't).

Let's be real though it's no secret most of the appeal from this series is the art style, story and characters, the latter 2 were a complete miss in TiT and the style is more of a mixed bag however I'll give TiT having the best cutscene animation in the series.

Based on what I've seen over the years; seems like the majority of Sly fans liked Thieves In Time, more people have probably talked about the people that say it's bad than there are the people that actually say it's bad.
Me personally however; (as hypocritical as it is to say this after what I just said) I think this game is pretty flawed for a whole number of reasons. I have to come back to this game to fully judge it on a Gameplay standpoint since it has been years since I last played these games but all I can say is that the graphics are fine fidelity wise but the art style is balls. And as for the story; I'll be brutally honest, it's one of the worst things ever put on paper. Like it's not just bad as a Sly Cooper story but it's not even good as a story in general and that is one hill I am more than willing to die on. Like what do we have? Characters acting nothing like how they're established to be like, a time travel plot that makes absolutely no sense when you put any level of thought into it, more plot holes than pixels, horrible villains with no threat or menace, abysmal cringeworthy humour and dialogue, everything is horribly contrived, filled with coincidences and is entirely half baked, nothing was thought out to any great degree, it flushes everything that was good about the previous games down the toilet and replaces it with nothing but anger inducing BS where everything they could've done wrong was done wrong. All for the express purpose of continuing a story that let's be honest, was already concluded and didn't need to be continued, and now it'll remain un-concluded because Thieves In Time ends on a needless cliff hanger.

First of all, love your video and second, I apologize for my long comment, but I'm a fan of the saga too hahaha
My favorite game its Sly 3, its true that Sly 2 really innovates in comparison to Sly 1 and that Sly 3 uses Sly 2 as a base.
But Sly 3 also innovates in a great way, refreshing the saga with new gameplays but at the same time maintaining its essence.
With gameplays such as the planes, the gondolas in Venice, the pirate ships (an idea that Assassin's Creed would later copy hahah), also by adding a multiplayer mode, secondary missions to complete after passing the story of some level, the treasure maps and including for the first time new integrants to the gang, all of them with unique gameplays. (without forgetting the 3D mode of the PS2 era)
On the other hand the environment feels more alive, with the stages of the day changing along the level, with Carmelita walking over the areas, by including traps on the level, with the scenario changing according to the events that happen along the missions, being able to dissguise and talk to guards to go unnoticed, the wolf on the Baron's level and a few other things.
The story of sly 2 is very well done, really well written. But I feel like they lengthened the story a lot by adding so many levels. While Sly 3 has the right extension and its story is also very well done.
We discover more of Sly's past, about his father even, we learned his different ancestors on an epic level in the Coopers' chamber where Sly discovers an incredible new ability related to lasers (I wish it had been included in Sly 4).
Also during the story we visit incredible settings where we meet antagonists from previous games and we see how the actions of past games have a great impact on the story (with characters like Panda King, Dimitri and Muggshot)
Also we see more about other characters, such as Bentley finally finding his better half (until the nonsense that happens with Penelope in Sly 4) or touching on topics such as the roles of each member in the band to conclude that they are above all a family. In addition, Sly finally confesses his love to Carmelita and ends the game with a bittersweet ending that perfectly closes the trilogy (until the 4th was made, i don't complain). I also think that Sly 3 includes some of the best villains in the series, such as General Tsao, Dr. M or Octavio.
Personally, the only problem I noticed in sly 2 was its extension, not because the game had more levels than the others, but because quite similar things were always done in them (yes, there were some exceptions such as the tank in the Contessa's level or Bentley's Dron in the Jean Bison level), but for the most part there were always similar dynamics.
However, I think that both Sly 2 and Sly 3 are the best games in the series and that which game you discovered this incredible world and its characters will always influence a lot.
Lets hope they bring sly Cooper back to life, it was my childhood
PS: The bubbles with options to talk to other characters and also the paintings with codes making references to the previous games were also pretty dope things on Sly 3
PPD: I did miss the clue bottles on Sly 3 :(

The series is LEGENDARY! But Sanzaru royally botched the Sly Collection, especially with the first game. And don't even get me started on the PS Vita download code for Sly 3...

I had the extreme privilege to talk with the voice of Sly Cooper, Kevin Miller over the phone back when he and his best friend did a gaming centered podcast. And he and I are also friends on Facebook 😅 I don’t ever bother him or ask him questions about Sly. But I have sent him the occasional “hey, hope you and the family are doing well. God bless” kinds of things. Such a sweet guy.

My guess is they're probably rebooting Sly Cooper the same way they did Ratchet and Clank in 2016. I don't think they would do Sly 5. It will probably be an updated take on the story of the first game. And I think it's PixelOpus' game with Sony Animation. Sony Animation had that Sly Cooper movie in development that never came out. I think there was even a teaser for it. I guess it was canceled because of how poorly the R&C movie did. But maybe they can transition some of those assets into a game?
InFAMOUS was also included in that same "leak". I think it's more likely that Sucker Punch is working on that than Sly Cooper. Probably Ghost of Tsushima 2/Legends 2 and a new InFAMOUS

I have the ps3 collection sealed, man do I want to break it open lol. Sure I could play it on my vita, but it’s not the same, I want dat 60fps. At least it’s smooth unlike jak and daxter trilogy on vita or even ratchet trilogy.

Man I can never get enough of this series, it’s forever going to be my favorite of my childhood and I do hope that we eventually get a remake or ports(but with this day and age, most likely a remake) of the original trilogy. I honestly think it getting a remake for the original trilogy like how Crash and Spyro gotten(which brought them back into the spotlight, but so far more for Crash as we don’t have Spyro 4 yet) is the best way to go and then maybe a sly5 or a remake of 4 that fixes its flaws(like the ending).

I liked sly 4, but I hated the whole character designs they did for the characters. I liked the comic style they all had in the past games. I also didn’t like Penelope’s betrayal, it felt out of no where and it didn’t seem like she was the type to not talk it out with Bentley

I believe it was implied in the middle of the Penelope boss fight that it turns out LeParadox deceived her in order to get her time machine.

Recently I've played through the entire Sly Trilogy for the first time and I wish I played it sooner, I feel like kid me would absolutely be obsessed with these games.
Sly 3 was definitely my favorite, 1 being my close second (Sly 2 was great but it kinda dragged on and many missions were a bit hit or miss), I still have yet to play Thieves in Time but I'm not sure if I want my recently developed love for this series to get damaged
