This was an exciting and fun interview! Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to share my story. I’m truly elated to read some of the comments on how I made others smile! (I’m literally tearing up as I write this. (^.^)) With so much negative energy going around the world, I always try to pass on a smile! Thank you so much once again! (*'ω'*)
Had to add another comment, hope you don't mind. Her wish that all racism would end seemed very heartfelt to me. My connections with people are usually on a person to person basis. And because I allow myself to be open...I have met some of the most sweetest, kindest, creative, funny and truly honest people. So many different cultures. You learn who's okay to speak to and who to back off from. And it all okay. For me, it has been such a healing and joyful experience and continues to surprise me with those I meet. One of the reasons I love this channel is the kind of openness and exploration shared here. Such a beautiful thing.♥
Happened to me also in Russia when a young Chinese girl who was my age at the time rub my skin and thought that the reason my skin is dark is because I was dirty. She eventually found out that my skin color is permanent and has nothing to do with cleanliness. It was an Awakening moment for the young girl and I became a teacher of life.

I love Shanda's stories about being able to do what you love for a living, enjoying the journey and being open to new paths that take you to where you want to go, if unexpectedly. Also admire her positive approach to life. Such a wonderful and inspiring story.♥☺♥ Plus she has a great laugh!!!!
A Chinese person from a province asked me that when I was in Hang Zhou. The ignorance is forgivable because they live segregated, under censorship and have a homogeneous society. They all think I’m Lawrence Taylor
You interview some amazing people! I love the quality of people on your channel. Keep up the great work! The lady in the video is so cool too. I’m glad that she is realizing her dreams.
Thanks so much Sis for sharing your experience. Yokohama and Tokyo are awesome areas. Kudos to you for stepping out and following your dreams. I am in Iwakuni Japan but have lived in that area.
I can relate to your skin rubbing experience as well. I had an adult to rub my skin while I was at a vending machine near my house here. She was not offensive but, it caught me off guard. I also agree with suggesting people step outside their comfort zones to experience all of the amazing things the world has to offer.
A professional cheerleader seems to me to be more of a hobby then that of a career since it normally doesn't last no more than 6 to 8 years at most because of aging. Beautiful sister ❤ love her story and journey
Good for her for standing up with that makeup store, I’m sure a lot of dark skinned women(and those with even darker skin) living there are appreciative of what she did now that it updated their shades That skin rubbing part makes me so angry though that is so ignorant
I have students who do the same thing when I teach and it's not about your skin color. They do not have any arm hair so it's something new for them to experience touching on someone else. In Japan many adults shave their arm hair for beauty.
The more black African we are,the less hair we have, we don't have much arm and leg hair, I personally haven't shave my legs in over a decade, never had to shave or wax my arm hair. It's so fine it's almost non-existent but I will agree that race just means foreign to most Asians & non American African folks. In Africa it's more about culture than race. The racial stereotyping as a negative is not our thing. Culture matters more than race, before institutional racism became the model.
I haven't watched the video yet but the title reminds me of the story of Oda Nobunaga meeting Yasuke, the Black Samurai (and first non Japanese Samurai). Oda had never seem a Black man and was shocked but fascinated. He thought Yasuke was simply covered in ink, so he had him bathe. When he realized it was truly his skin color, he took him in. They trained him to be a samurai and he became one of Oda's bodyguards. But this happened in the 1600... no one should be question skin today
What a bright personality. That kind of big bright personality would probably be too bold for a lot of Japanese. Based on what I’m learning in these interviews they seem to be quiet and reserved.
I laughed at the “Skin rubbing” comment. That happened to me many years ago in Laos. I went to the city market with a white coworker and while we were standing at a kios, a middle aged woman started rubbing my skin. I just stood there and said nothing. I was more in shock than anything. That’s was about 20 years. I’m surprised that it’s still happening today in that part of the world.
Her make up reminds me of the MUA in Dallas, Texas. Her website is: unfiltered by taye. She does amazing make overs. I have really enjoyed this video. Each of the interviewers have similar experiences. they would because they're different individuals. This was really enjoyable.
Nice interview. When you go to Japan or any other country it's important to learn the language. Don't expect the children or anyone else around you to know english. Spanish is taught in the US as well but I rarely ever see a student in public school speaking spanish after graduation.
It's usually comical when someone would think that our colour would come off by rubbing our skin. When someone lives in a society where people like us do not reside, this is what they would do.
Shanda reminds me of Lola Falana....I am not casting aspersions on Shanda, the guest interviewee, but I swear NO ONE would come up on me and get close enough to even touch me like that. I keep a personal space zone. Basically what happened to he is an assault in the U.S.Great tips and sounds like she has the personality to deal with ignorance.
@@TheBlackExJp It´s interesting for me to see the interviewer, because I feel more comfortable listening and can empathize with the interview. (Just my personal opinion)
I am not strong enough to go through the things people of color go through in Japan...no don't rub my skin, no don't touch my hair...don't stare at me...I have traveled abroad, been to London, Amsterdam and Ireland and other places...
I have given this some serious thought , because I would like to visit Japan , and even as a visitor , you could run into the situation where I could be in the same situation. My conclusion is not to interpret this action through my cultural lens, and experiences in the United States. Therefore , my reaction would be individualized. If the touching is done in a intentionally lewd manner , than that person will be met with the same reaction , as if I was back in the states. If a person does so out of curiosity , if it is a child , than I would think , this child is learning from an young age there are people who have different skin colors than you , but we are all still human. One thing , I already know about innocent children, like the child mentioned in the video , they are coming to you with prejudice , and hate . They are learning and exploring, the world around them. As for adults , am going to have to learn some conversational Japanese . However , before that need to know what about their culture makes it okay , to go up , to a total stranger without fear or reservation , and make physical contact. I wonder do they do this among themselves , if they spot anything about another Japanese person , that they are curious about. I want to understand there culture , but I want to share mine , and to be able to say , " touching a stranger is unacceptable in my country , and culture. This knowledge hopefully gets taken back to their family friends , and they continue to spread it . If enough African Americans , respond this way , eventually , this information , will become common knowledge in Japan . We must take the stance of correcting this behavior towards us in a positive manner.
@@veganpiranha3302 Exactly...Asians are given such credit for being so smart but they don't realize that human skin doesn't rub off?Ridiculous...it's offending.
@jeff c thanks for your reply , and shedding more light on this issue. I perceive what you said , with the exception of children , that it's almost like having a borderline fetishization with black skin. The other things you mentioned , yes , have run across information about this , and they are not connected to skin touching. Some behaviors of Japanese people , remind of those adults who are considered model citizens , until it's discovered what they are actually , doing behind close doors , etc. Japanese are all culturally indoctrinated into certain cultural standards , that does not explain especially , what goes on in the bedroom , and what in this country would be considered pedophilia , and sexual assault.
