I love your version and am now making my own! I completely agree and just because someone has the money to pay for something ethically made, doesn’t mean they will. Unless you crochet, you probably don’t know how much goes into it.
Thank you neighbor( Tumwater, Wa). Love the dress, thanks for the break down! I make blankets, sweaters, shawls etc and you just helped me learn how much to charge someone for those items. God Bless. 😇🙏
My pleasure! It's always so hard for us creative types to value our items correctly especially when we have to compete with fast fashion and even large companies.
Nice job showing how much the cost in the U.S. would cost. Obviously the people who crocheted this dress get pennies compared to our pay here, which is precisely why they outsource the labor. We also are usually trading quality for cheap fast fashion. I have a few pieces of clothing that belonged to my Mom when clothing was made well and was quality even for a middle class person. I am in my 60s and was interested in the result of your project. Love the little matching bag that you did.
Thank you so much! It's just so crazy to me how fast fashion has infiltrated our world and quality craftsmanship and hanging on to items for generations has all but disappeared.
My mom is in her 60s. When she was in her 20s, she wore two dresses a LOT and they got handed down to me. One is a bit faded, but the fabric and stitching is as sturdy as it was when it was made. I wear them all the time! Most of the clothes I have from the last decade are tattered.
If the dress is still stiff after steaming it, you can try treating it with vinegar. I do that before I wash and block things I make with acrylic, especially the cheaper stuff. It helps the drape and texture SO much
I strongly agree with you Crafty Girrl. Crochet to me is an artwork not just to make and sell for such a cheap price. Thanks for enlightening those who think crochet artist should sell them items cheap because they compare with machine made stuff
Great video. Very lovley you mentioned the price tag and it's reality. I'm using cotton and the price is much higher in materials. I just started the dress and have fun🎉
I wish I had access to cotton when I made it but it still was a great project to make. Now I just have to wait until the cooler months to wear it since the acrylic is so heavy and warm. hahah
@@thecraftygrrl the good thing, you will have a lovely winter dress with fresh colors and sth new to wear. It's unfair of me, I'm working in a yarn store here in Germany and it's off course easily to get. But the most important thing is that it's fun to do.... 🥳🥳🥳
New sub here, from Battle Ground, WA. Anyway, I've made two granny square bedspreads, one queen, one king. They took me months each. When i posted on FB everyone was hitting me up for one. No way! They wouldnt pay $1,500 for one, and honestly, that's about what it would cost them
It was actually helpful to see both directions for the sleeves. I plan on making one of these, and was thinking if doing the sleeves the way you first had them so I could more easily do decreases to have more tapered sleeves.
The national minimum wage in the US is $7.25. Employers are not allowed to pay employees lower than Federal minimum wage even if the State has no minimum wage. Employees who get tips get minimum Federal wage per hour if their tips plus wage is less than Federal minimum or the State minimum whichever is higher. State with the highest minimum is Washington State with $16.25. Several States have no minimum and some Cities have higher minimum wages than their State. Washington D.C. minimum is $17.50 an hour which is the highest. You can find the minimum wage for each State from the Department of Labor. I just wanted everyone to know this just in case they are getting lower than what the Federal minimum or their State minimum. Yes I realize there are exceptions but this is the basic rule.
That part definitely takes a little bit of time but I actually love doing that part if you can believe it. It breaks up the project and is so satisfying.
@@thecraftygrrl The sad truth is that the people making these dresses for the brand are probably not making even that much in a day; there's no way they're made in the US. P.S. Your dress is so cute.
You can’t get any skein of yarn for $2.50 anywhere anymore unless you get the $1.25 skeins at the $ tree but they only have maybe 100 yards each and are very thin. Actually I have never gotten even Red heart super saver at $2.50 a skein even on clearance. Also the US Federal minimum wage is $7.25 it has not changed since it was raised to $7.25 back in 2009 there are states and companies that “CHOOSE” to pay more some much more it is not required by the federal government to pay more than $7.25 per hour to anyone.
I came down here to talk about the national minimum wage. It can't be national and some states have it lower than that without serious loopholes (ex. People with disabilities.) The US Department of Labor still lists it as $7.25. On the price of yarn, the reality is 2-4 washes and that dress will look like she inherited it so it is actually more expensive in the long run because it can't withstand the wash, much like Shein. And I will give her points on the fact I wouldn't work so cheap either. A skill that cannot be made by machine and can be custom made with a few tweaks? Yeah, no, I'm at least $20/hr. That's why most crocheters gift instead of sell.
You can get yarn for that cheaply at a lot of craft stores depending on your state. And even then there are even more websites that also offer cheap yarn. Ice Yarns seems expensive unless you so the math and it's even cheaper and better quality than you get here in the states if you aren't going nuts with how much you get at one time. And I buy a lot of dollar tree yarns for accessories. I frequently go by a specific location we have here that has a 1 or so lace thickness yarn and it's 400 yards per skein. Mostly comes out fall/winter. I have it in a lot of shades of green and red along with standard colors like black and white. We only have one location that sells this one. But it is sometimes available to buy in a 12pc wholesale on their website. Same as in store. Michaels has their standard yarn at $2.99 but you can frequently get it buy one get one free or half off. Hobby lobby if you feel like shopping there has a lot of yarn also under $3. Crochet threads are $1.99. They're all also currently on sale for the holiday. Some craft sites do crazy black Friday sales. My goodwill has yarn fairly often. Michaels has some nice yarn on clearance. Joann always has sales. Walmarts yarn is also cheap. Point is that there is plenty of yarn cheap even if you have to go online. Even after inflation.
She just wore it. As you know this style has been around for a very long time- she just brought it out of the shadows and is it’s getting all kinds of folks excited about crochet which is awesome.
It was actually helpful to see both directions for the sleeves. I plan on making one of these, and was thinking if doing the sleeves the way you first had them so I could more easily do decreases to have more tapered sleeves.
Glad you able make the dress and shine a light on why crochet is expensive.

I’ve never tried vinegar but heard it works wonders. I did soak it in fabric softener and air dry and it’s so much softer.

Love the dress and the bag is such a fantastic finishing touch ❤
Thank you! 😊
Another thing to consider when pricing your knit or crochet items is your skill level. The classes or time you've devoted to perfecting your craft.
Love the dresses and purse!
Thank you!!
I love it! You know what I'm going to say about it!!!!!

Adorable bag!
It looks great!

Gorgeous
Great job with limited time and supplies. Will you have a tutorial for the bag? It's fabulous ❤.
I just free-styled it but if you're interested I could totally show you how I made it.
@thecraftygrrl Thank you for your response. YES, I would definitely like to know how to make it.
The dress Taylor wore has neck shaping (a rounded neckline). Front is not just a rectangle (though many of the recreations are).
I lived in Laramie, Wyoming from 2013-2016, and still miss it to this day.
Working on one now for my granddaughter! It’s really fun watching the color changes, but I suspect I’m not going to enjoy weaving in the ends, lol

I am also so excited to see your beautiful 😂beautiful creation of the Taylor Swift Dress!!! Gasp 😱 is RIGHT. Those dresses are adorable 🥰
This dress turned out really cute!! And so did the bag! What stitches did you do around the handles?
I just did SC until I had enough rows to go around the handle and then just whip stitched it to the other side.
How did you make the bag?

US minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, and it has not been raised since 2009.
Omg!!!!! Where did I get this $16 from? Thank you for calling that out.

Certain states still have a $7.25 minimum wage. That’s the case here in Tennessee.
Shining the light on exploitation...

I wonder if TS was machine made
Crochet cannot be replicated by machine.
Did Taylor Swift make the dress or wear it? This pattern style I have seen before in the 70's....
