I suppose a loan move can't go too far wrong anyway but Emery seems determined that he will pull a player or 2 back to former glories. I wouldn't bet against him, I just don't get why.

I agree but it depends on his mentality. If he did, He'd probably go thinking he has amazing for them rather than them amazing for him. If it didn't work at clubs like those it probably is all over for him.
The benifit of a club like Villa is that he could go hoping a manager like Emery can pull some form out of him rather than forcing it himself.
That may not be good for Villa unless it worked. For Phillips himself it's a safer option with the built in defence of so many players ahead of him in the pecking order from day 1.

He was absolutely shocking the other night. Pep keeps giving him opportunities to prove himself and the man just looks totally lost, looks extremely slow, decision making is beyond slow etc. His performances for West Ham were embarrassing as well. They said “if a man manager like Moyes couldn’t get anything out of you, ur finished”
100 percent mate. He’s forgotten how to play football. A lot of the time players at city struggle in their first seasons but Pep is a man manager and he will improve players. Like he did with Stones,Grealish,Gvardiol etc. he tried to do the same with Phillips but he just couldn’t make it work, the rare recruitment error from city.
I don’t see the harm in bringing him in on loan. Worse case you send him back or have him polishing boots. Best case Emery boosts his confidence like he did with Bailey and we have the “old” Phillips and he excels.
When are we going to stop doubting everything that Emery and Monchi do? Have they not shown they know what they’re doing? UTV!!!
Man City got a player they did not need, have a space for in their squad and devalued him.
Speaking as a former athlete, performance and confidence are so linked.
If a club breaks a player confidence off course they will play well below their ability.
Players are human first and he has been treated badly

Phillips is a confidence player, remember years ago when Bielsa got hold of him and he spoke about how he made him believe in his abilities. Never worked out at Man City and when Pep called him out it prob wasn’t the best way to build confidence.
Wish him all the best and there is a player there but there is now risk attached and that would have to be reflected in the price.
Bielsa had a limited budget so got the best out of Phillips. Pep wanted a ready made player which he's entitled to expect but Phillips was made to seem better than he was by Bielsa. Phillips was too dumb to see he owed everything to Bielsa and was incredibly disloyal to him.

@@nyfbie nearly left for Villa before promotion, checked out in his last season, gave a weird interview after he was played in defence against Spurs and didn't fight to keep him in a job.
@@clivet3252 he was playing while injured almost that entire last season he played for us and went to surgery after the season ended. How much you think he has say as a player in who our manager will be? Are you blaming Rapha for not fighting to keep Bielsa as the manager? Or Cooper or Ayling or Dallas or Klich or anyone else?
Bielsa would laugh at you thinking Kalvin did him dirty. I'd bet they're still on good terms.

Pep just buys players other rival clubs are interested in to stop rivals getting stronger, then destroys them by leaving them on them bench! Kalvin should have known this! It will backfire on City long term as players will avoid City. As a Villa fan 40+ Id like him at Villa! With 3-6 months under Unai on the training ground with the lads n squad we have, he"ll come back a better stronger midfield player n add even more depth to our squad! A loan or cheapish move would be a gud deal. Two years ago he's was playing like Jude Bellingham in the England team and was the best player on the pitch! 😮
Regardless of how he’s playing now pep didn’t give him a sniff because he couldn’t afford too drop Rodri in that title race. Totally destroyed him making him sit on the bench for over a year. Same happening with Nunez now . 60mill and hardly played.
After what he put on tape for West Ham he be lucky to be in the Championship.

Several of our players had lost their confidence before Emery came...I don't think he'd play a lot for us but it wouldn't be the worst move.
You could say he's lost confidence and belief or you could just say he wasn't good enough for Man City.

Wasn't ross Barkley in a similar position?
Ross Barkley never got fat and still was used fairly regular as cover when playing for Chelsea. And when he went out on loan actually was still good enough to play.
Ross Barkley's only problem at Chelsea was there were better players than him. Phillip's problem is he got noticeably worse, and was even bad when Pep gave him opportunities to prove himself.

I have spoken to footballers about this.
When a footballer like Phillips goes into training every day and sees how inferior they are to Rodri...it can destroy their confidence.

I'm not sure he was inferior to Rodri, at the time.
The man had just played a Euro final, and been a key part of England's and Leeds success that season.
He had the nickname "The Yorkshire Pirlo" at Leeds.
While tongue in cheek, he was genuinely making incredible sliding challenges, and playing 40yrd chip passes upfield.
I think the fact he started his career injured at City had a huge impact on his development there, and Rodri continued to emerge as the best CDM in the world.
It's just like any competitive profession, really. You can either let that drive you to improve or wallow in the self-doubt.
If something like that is really what has limited him, then he should move to a side like Crystal Palace, Nottingham or even a relegation team to improve without distractions.
Dean Saunders should have told Moyes that
Kalvin Phillips would be best going to one of the Old Firm. They can afford to carry him a little while he finds his feet and then he should excel once he is match fit. If it goes well then he can move to a Premier League club at the end of the year. If he goes to another Premier League club then he will likely struggle for half a dozen games, get dropped and then he will be in an even worse position in 12 months.
Another reason why players should not rush to signing for man city

I like Dean Saunders, but I've got to question what he's on about with the Kante comparisons, even at his best, Philips although he plays in the same position, his role and qualities are completely different!
Comparing Philips to kante is like saying a lada is the same as a lamborghini because they are both car's
@@chucky7826 I agree, but even style wise, I don't see Phillips, even when he was good being a work horse player that breaks up play, he's more of a regista type (hate using them new words for roles) but he's more a ball playing type from deep, Kante is a proper ball winning defensive midfielder you know, with a serious engine at that which Phillips never had

I actually can’t believe that Gareth Southgate said that “England needed a Kalvin Phillips replacement” at the EUROs. This is the exact same guy who couldn’t even get in the West Ham team with all due respect to them, as a failed loan stint makes you wonder if the guy is ever going to get back to being in top form and for me he shouldn’t be anywhere near that Manchester City squad, he should’ve been offloaded by now, I just don’t see him having a proper future at the club and I know it’s preseason, but the guy has shown no signs of improvement and he continues to underperform on the pitch and once the actual season starts, Pep isn’t going to give him any chances.
Have a day off. There is no doubt that England best performances were in the games when England played 4231 with Rice and Phillips in central midfield.

Bielsa knows how to get the best out of average players and Phillips went through a purple patch under him. Bielsa made Bamford, Cooper and Ayling look good.
@mikerotchburns2568 More recently. Italy away (2-1 win), Scotland away (3-1 win), and Italy home (2-1 win). Rice and Phillips as a double pivot in CDM in all 3 games.
Those were all in qualifying games and friendlies. I can see your point about England’s best performances coming when Phillips has partnered with Rice in midfield and how a player performs for their club doesn’t necessarily matter at international level, but for me it’s difficult to determine if he would’ve had more of an impact on that team as someone like Mainoo did if he was picked for their squad at the EUROs even though Southgate said that they needed a replacement for him and again this is the same guy who was struggling to get in the West Ham team
@tobaepebinuade5830 On current form, Mainoo has to play. He is a quality player and he was fantastic for England in the Euros. When Southgate made that comment after the 1-1 Denmark game in the Euros, most people misunderstood what he meant. The fan's reaction to this comment, although understandable, was way over the top. He didn't mean KP right now. Southgate didn't select him in the squad in March either, so he has missed 2 squads in a row. He was simply saying a KP type of player, in other words, a defensive midfielder.
If was good he would of demended move ages ago to any where ,he should go to new promoted team show his stuff ,but looks like his fucked now 28 at villa no way , go Fulham

@rjw4762 England doesn't have a natural 6 who can dictate the play and construct the attacks. Until this player comes through England should avoid 433 against the top teams.

Think they are entitled to success - in fariness to him, when someone like Pep thinks that you're worth buying, I guess you do strut around a bit......but this season is huge for him - make or break - reminds me of when Lingaard joined Forest 2 years ago at 29......signed by our Owners (NOT Steve Cooper) and soon showed himself to have the wrong attitude - now playing in Korea !!! Phillips take note !!

I don't think Kalvins issues are the same as those other players. I think he was the biggest fish in a small pond, moved into a sea of sharks and was then asked to change the way he swims.
