As we journeyed towards Pfeiffer Beach from Pebble Beach and passed through Carmel by the Sea, we made a spontaneous stop at the roadside to marvel at the breathtaking beauty of the Pacific Ocean and its surrounding scenery.
Carmel-by-the-Sea is a charming coastal city located on the Monterey Peninsula. The city is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, quaint architecture, and vibrant arts scene.
The town's pristine beaches, including Carmel Beach and the nearby Pfeiffer Beach, are popular destinations for visitors and locals alike. The rugged coastline and rocky cliffs provide stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, and the area is known for its wildlife, including sea lions and otters.
BEACH
Located along the scenic Highway 1 in the heart of Big Sur, California, Pfeiffer Beach is a must-visit destination for anyone looking for a unique and picturesque coastal experience.
The beach is located about 27 miles south of Carmel-by-the-Sea and 63 miles north of San Simeon. To access the beach, you'll need to take the narrow and winding Sycamore Canyon Road off Highway 1. Keep an eye out for a small, unmarked road between the Big Sur Ranger Station and the Post Ranch Inn.
Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) are ideal times to visit, as the weather is typically mild, and the beach is less crowded than during the summer months. However, the most popular time to visit Pfeiffer Beach is during the summer (June to August) when the weather is warm and sunny, making it perfect for beach activities.
One of the most distinctive features of Pfeiffer Beach is its purple sand. The sand gets its unique hue from manganese garnet particles that wash down from the surrounding hillsides. The purple sand is most noticeable after heavy rains, as the garnet particles are more concentrated. The intensity of the purple color can vary throughout the year and even throughout the day, depending on the angle of the sun and the tide.
Pfeiffer Beach is home to several dramatic rock formations that add to its beauty and mystique. The most famous of these is Keyhole Rock, a large rock with a naturally formed arch right in the center. I took my Bucket list drive last year in this area. I hit McWay Falls, Partington Cove, and Pfeiffer beach. Looks like the sunlight was better angled through the keyhole rock on Pfieffer beach in your video. I was there in July.
