Thank you guys for finally doing this review. I was hoping that you did this review before I purchased a CX9 for myself =) But thank goodness the CX9 turned out to be everything and more that I expected. I had a 2016 CX5 Grand Touring i bought new and placed 57,000 miles on it. I recently traded that in for a CPO 2016 CX9 Grand Touring that came with 22,000 miles. I'm impressed with the way it drives, the interior appointments, and Bose audio system. I can drive this thing like I stole it, without feeling I'm going to flip the damn thing over. I didn't know there's interior LED accent lighting in the door handles and door bins until I drove the CX9 at night. And the audio system is pretty powerful. I never had radar cruise control until this car, it's a nifty toy.
You’re telling me they claim that crappy camera, displaying on that computer-controlled screen is ANALOG? Sounds like excuse-making from someone who didn’t actually have a defense for it.
@@shammyh Mercedes, Audi and BMW also have wide field of views but you must select the wider field if you want. The normal field of view is such that it produces less distortion for people. But you will always see an icon which you can select to make it the super wide field of view.
Doug. Do u have a family? I’m debating a Premium Plus CX5, or getting this. I’ll lose equipment but gain turbo and a bit of space which. I really don’t need. How is it?
I love speed and buying an SUV was not an option, but then I started a family and had to get me one. I did my research just as I did with my is250 Lexus, and had to test drive the CX9. Went for a test drive and drove out with one. Felt in love with this SUV and is worth every penny! Believe me!
It’s been great! No failures at all, so far been pumping regular unleaded and keeping up with Maintnance and no mechanical issues other than a recall for the navigation screen due to manufacturing glue, but many other makes have tons of recalls. This one only had one since I purchased it. The only thing I wish I did was to put a protector coat on the paint beside the manufacture, because I had mine parked in no shade. Back trunk, in between stop lights, coat is coming off but can’t really tell unless you get close to it. Besides that, car handles good, it has speed, it has torque, and the turbos sound great when accelerating. Worth it in my opinion.
iXii000 I have more than one vehicle, the CX-9 is my family car and honestly it is great. The things reviewers complain about is very easy to live with. Mazda is so under appreciated.
This is exactly why I love to watch reviews from a guy of my size. sometimes, the car may be great but small elements, which 80% of the population with just ignore, totally compromise a particular model for you (Kia Stinger with the panoramic sunroof, any classic Mini and plastic elements on your knee level, Peugeots and their cupholders). Thank you guys!
I think this is my favourite car review channel. I learn a great deal about the featured vehicle and the random banter about life in Canada is perfect and hilarious.
Stoked for the telluride video. I work at a car wash and there is a guy out here who has one of those and gets it washed all the time. It’s the only one I’ve ever seen and boy does it have presence. Looks insanely nice
I LITERALLY went on a CX-9 Grand Touring test drive this morning and at 6'3", my ONLY negative is the center console rubbing against my right knee while driving. Everything else is FANTASTIC. I'm simply going to have to decide if the console is REALLY that big of an issue or not. This SUV drives and handles just that good. I even had my 6'4" brother, go on the test drive with me and he rode comfortably in the back seat with no worries. LOVING the CX-9, just have to decide on the knee issue.
My dad had the first cx5 turbo in Ontario, the signature edition in pearl white and my sister has the 2019 cx9 on red, signature edition. I am 6'5 280 pounds and I fit perfectly in both. Yes in the cx5 I have to lower the seat all the way back and person sitting behind me has to suffer but the cx9 I could drive it from new Jersey to Toronto comfortably.
I'm 6-5, was pumped to sit in it at the auto show when it first released (2016?) and was immediately very disappointed. The driver's seat seems built for average to smaller sized people, it's snug.
I appreciate how they managed to put the new, trendy chrome line through the tail lights without making it look like lobster claws (looking at you, new Forester).

I always considered Mazda's illuminated grille to be the best in the business! I love how they illuminated the entire grille surround instead of just the emblem like Infiniti, Mercedes and Chevy. It gives it a classy, sophisticated look in my opinion, much more so than the others. Now that I'm thinking about it, Mercedes (obviously a luxury heavy hitter in the game) has the worst interpretation of an illuminated grille/emblem. Theirs looks like a poor after thought. Maybe it's the LEDs that they use but it looks thin and dim...At least Chevy and Infiniti use a "thicker" LED for their illuminations.
Bought a 2022 CX-9 Carbon Edition today because of this video and absolutely love it. I am well aware that a new CX-90 will come out soon but don’t care. It drives like a much smaller suv, and the red leather seats look and feel fantastic. Saving up for a Miata now, hope one day they put the 2.5L engine in it :)
I hear you , driving and handling is my priority as thats what we do in a vehicle... I could not drive a vehicle that i would need to fight with to make a turn or lane change
Love this CX-9. It was the only other SUV that I was seriously considering against my Durango R/T. I went with the Durango because it's got that badass-ness. But the new Telluride might get me back to Kia-- can't wait for you guys to review that!
Thanks for the ‘tall person’ review of the drivers right leg area. I couldn’t fit in the new RAV4 because of a sharp jutting plastic center console design and my brother had the same problem with the current gen CRV. Bad enough in those two models to cause serious pain after 30 minutes behind the wheel.
1. It was Goldilocks. 2. I started doing research on Continental tires after you guys got sponsored, and found a great alternative to the Michelin PS4S. I am grabbing a set of Continental extreme sport+ tires, and putting them on a set of fifteen52 Tarmac's for my '18 Elantra sport. Great coverage and points of view as always!
I had a 2016 Mazda 6 GT with the Signature grille and found it simple and elegant. I miss it on my 2018 Sig. But the Mercedes version is just butt ugly. Not elegant at all. IMO
Love the quality and production of your review videos! Have you guys ever thought of doing more “ best used car” reviews. Desperately trying to find a good Nissan Juke review but not finding much content. I’m strangely in love with that car. Represent quality budget cars for us lowly peasants!
Nissan's not known for their quality or reliability. I would check out what Consumer Reports has on the model you are thinking of, good luck in your search!
That is so true about what you said about the quality of the interior. VW used to be the leader here but Mazda has surpassed them. I sat in a CX5 and was just so impressed. It is like the Japanese have all of the sudden discovered better materials because their cars always felt horrid inside. I think the Germans are moving in the opposite direction now to what the Japanese interiors used to be like. Odd. But the Mazda CX5 deserves all the sale success and should be selling more than the ugly Rav4 and plain boring CRV. The Tiguan is just overpriced now and interior quality not as good as Mazda. It seems the scandal caused a knock to VW's quality.
Not a big suv person but this is my favorite ones. I don’t understand all my friends with kids though who think they are way too cool for a minivan. Minivans are so comfortable!!!!
Great vid! Been crushing on Mazdas since I my old '91 Protege. Their cars are fun and they have had great interiors since about '05. Also, I find the exterior design quite appealing. However, $51000?! I am but a working schlub, Sir! I'm interested in seeing how the new Toyota Highlander compares to this.
Ryan Hie ever since the first CX-9 redesign they’ve always intended it to be in the higher cost area, it’s always been an expensive car since a few years ago
I’ve owned 5 Mazda. Not because I am a loyal Mazda fan but rather each time I bought a new car, Mazda ticked all of the boxes. Simple. I bought the Cx9 with the V6 in 2010 and still have it (Australia). Great car. I have 4 kids and the 3rd row was the best in class. The new one is even better. Thanks again for a great review. BTW, I am Canadian/Australian originally from Toronto but have worked in Singapore for many years. Bought 2 Mazda in Singapore - the most expensive place in the world to buy a car!!!
Should’ve mentioned the NVH levels w/c was further improved vs 2016-2018s...if you noticed on video you could clearly hear their conversations inside cabin (low road noise) despite on highway...that’s cause of the class leading quiet interior...
Just bought one..... what I don’t like is the 2 middle vents can’t be shut off. And the low setting still has a high velocity. Maaazda! Also, speed does show, but cruise control need to be turned to ON.
I’m owning this vehicle for almost 3 years and i’m loving it, i just noticed last night while waiting for my wife before watching this video the same issue with jacob, both my knee is touching the plastic but not a big issue for me, I’m 6foot 1inch of height and I’m seating comfortably.
I dislike front plates on most cars. In the case of my Model 3 however, the obligatory front Texas plate helps break up the large grill-less Tesla fascia and makes it look better.
Great vid guys. FYI: just built one on mazdausa.com just like yours (dark grey signature) and the MSRP base price is US$45,365. Add destination charge (US$1,045) and a couple accessories I find necessary (mud flaps, cargo cover, etc) for US$2,315 and the car lists for US$48,725. A little toward the high side, but still not bad considering what you get for that money. I'm a big Mazda fan ... and they just keep getting better and better with age -- and they listen to their buyers to make their next gen even better! Keep up the great work!
Regarding Jakub's 0:54 complaint about his knee hitting the dash - for what it's worth, I'm 6'3" with a big frame, and I recently sat in a 2021 CX-9. My knees were nowhere near the lower dash trim, when my seat was in my comfortable driving position. My right knee definitely wanted to rest against the left side of the centre console, but that's typical for me and not uncomfortable at all.
I have one!!! These is the best SUV and not only for families. For me is the comfort, drivability, power, design and extra space. I had the CX5 2017 (pre-turbo), but there is something more interesting in this CX9.
I don't really like SUVs all that much, but i have to say, this is one of the best looking ones out there, super refined looking and very well styled. I absolutely hate the massive grills on newer SUVs and cars (ahem, BMW, Teluride, lots of other) that completely dominates the shape and front end of the car. It looks like a massive dick swinging contest. I think the CX-9 does a very good balance of it and the horizontal lines break the appearance of the grill up into smaller sections so it doesn't seem as large as it is.
You guys are the best. No bs, straight to the point. Don’t mind getting rid of front plates so long as you are allowed to safe out of the space for safety. Goldilocks and the three bears.... love it! I hate rock hard suspension too. Not many manufacturers seen to be able to get the right mix.
You can zoom in/out on the maps! Turn the knob when you are viewing the map to zoom in and out. Took me a very long time to figure that out on my CX-9.
My daughter has a 2012 CX-9 with the 6 cyl engine and that's my baseline. We test drove two different CX-9s today at a dealer because my wife wants one now. First, a 2018 Signature Edition. It did not have the get up and go that the 2012 model has, despite higher torque numbers in the specs. So we tried a 2019 Grand Touring model with lower mileage to see if it was a matter of engine wear. This one seemed even less responsive than the 2018 model. If torque is what gets the car moving, then why does the 2012 CX-9 with 270 ft lbs outperform the 310 ft lbs newer models in both the standing start and passing on the highway? My daughter's CX9 seems to want to cruise above 80mph. I drove in this afternoon and found myself exceeding 80mph without realizing it numerous times on the highway. The newer cars are nice, but the drive train feels like it's got a rubber band softening the acceleration.
2:35 ...yeah, Tahoes and Suburbans (and their GMC and Cadillac equivalents) are huge, body-on-frame SUVs but do _NOT_ have comfortable, usable 3rd rows, at all. The body-on-frame with a solid rear axle and no independent rear suspension (like the Ford/Lincoln) mean the seats are slammed to the floor and your knees are forced up to your chin, especially at >6ft tall. Even a much smaller CX-9, Sorento, MDX, etc. have a much more usable 3rd row for adults; and something like Atlas or Telluride are limousine-like compared to the Tahoe.
I’m from the UK and am 6ft 3” tall in most cars I’ve owned recently I buy one of those cheap yellow sponges you can get and use it to lean my knee against the door when driving
Beautiful review as always. You guys should review the Lexus GSF. It's one of my favorite cars ever and I would love to know what you guys think about it. Take care and I hope you get the views and subscriptions you deserve soon
It looks awesome but given a minivan with same engine, AWD and ground clearance I'd go for the van as it is more usable. Usability is a priority for me
"A place to grow" except if you are trying to buy a house in Toronto! haha! Love from Vancouver! Another crazy expensive city in Canada. At least you guys in Toronto don't pay $1.70 per litre of gas! To my U.S. American friends reading this, that's $4.80 per gallon.

I couldn’t fit in the new RAV4 because of a sharp jutting plastic center console design and my brother had the same problem with the current gen CRV. Bad enough in those two models to cause serious pain after 30 minutes behind the wheel.
Damn tall people problems
❤️
The Mercedes light up badge is available in USA too. I’ve seen it many times on the streets of NYC. As you said, it is bad.
It's even worse when optioned on the base trims with halogen lights
I had a 2016 Mazda 6 GT with the Signature grille and found it simple and elegant. I miss it on my 2018 Sig. But the Mercedes version is just butt ugly. Not elegant at all. IMO
Kyle R I like people with halogen lights because they don’t blind you at night
U crazy as hell that shit looks dope
Not too cheese, I love the front illuminated grill. Looks awesome. Great review guys
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS. MY DREAM CAR
Definitely my favourite in this class, looks good inside and outside and driving experince is great too
Jakub saying 6ft 1 and a half is like when kids say they are 6 and a half years old, like that half actually matters XD
Accuracy always matters. Lying sucks
you guys got me addicted to watching car reviews
Oh snap! I didn't realize the Ontario government is looking to get rid of the front plates. For once a positive change.
This car is certainly not the most practical, but it looks so darn good, inside and out. CX9 it is!
Goldilocks!!! You fools...... thanks for the sweet vids! Love all Mazda
0:45 yes, my husband hates it!! Especially when we go on long road trips.
Too much. Unrealistically expensive.
I like the 2020 Highlander Platinum in Moon Dust with Glazed Caramel interior!
Great video guys, I still think I would choose the Pilot Black Edition if I was shopping in this segment or spend the extra money for an A-Spec MDX
I feel like I can totally imagine exactly how these guys looked as children
great review!!! a nice surprise that you guys reviewed the cx-9
Can't wait for the Telluride review!!
Yuri’s shirt, is awesomeeeee!
Got it at Simons
Should’ve mentioned the NVH levels w/c was further improved vs 2016-2018s...if you noticed on video you could clearly hear their conversations inside cabin (low road noise) despite on highway...that’s cause of the class leading quiet interior...
Just bought one..... what I don’t like is the 2 middle vents can’t be shut off. And the low setting still has a high velocity. Maaazda! Also, speed does show, but cruise control need to be turned to ON.
Sitting watching the video and my wife says “ hey Jakob has a beard “.
Hello Chauncey's wife
I’m owning this vehicle for almost 3 years and i’m loving it, i just noticed last night while waiting for my wife before watching this video the same issue with jacob, both my knee is touching the plastic but not a big issue for me, I’m 6foot 1inch of height and I’m seating comfortably.
I dislike front plates on most cars. In the case of my Model 3 however, the obligatory front Texas plate helps break up the large grill-less Tesla fascia and makes it look better.
I absolutely love my 2018 CX9. I fit great at 6'3''. I wanna see a track hawk type version
"There's this weird little dip where my butt goes"
Pretty sure I heard that differently.
Cant wait for you guys to do Telluride review
I have one!!!
These is the best SUV and not only for families.
For me is the comfort, drivability, power, design and extra space.
I had the CX5 2017 (pre-turbo), but there is something more interesting in this CX9.
Looks better than BMW X7, Mercedes GLS and Audi Q7. And it's probably more reliable, too.
For real? More reliable than the big brands?
@@UlciaRogo BMWs are unreliable ngl
Ulcia Rogo you obviously never owned *any* German brand
I don't really like SUVs all that much, but i have to say, this is one of the best looking ones out there, super refined looking and very well styled. I absolutely hate the massive grills on newer SUVs and cars (ahem, BMW, Teluride, lots of other) that completely dominates the shape and front end of the car. It looks like a massive dick swinging contest. I think the CX-9 does a very good balance of it and the horizontal lines break the appearance of the grill up into smaller sections so it doesn't seem as large as it is.
This is a truly beautiful vehicle.
Mercedes gross light up badge is also available in the United States
that t-shirt is faaaaabulousssss *throws glitter*
You guys are the best. No bs, straight to the point. Don’t mind getting rid of front plates so long as you are allowed to safe out of the space for safety. Goldilocks and the three bears.... love it! I hate rock hard suspension too. Not many manufacturers seen to be able to get the right mix.
Thanks
Nice to see I’m not the only fan of the Yacht Rock station
❤️
Calling it right now, Telluride is gonna be your favorite.
Love your videos, how would I get started to do what you guys do, reviewing and driving new cars?
You can zoom in/out on the maps! Turn the knob when you are viewing the map to zoom in and out. Took me a very long time to figure that out on my CX-9.
Ya we know
My daughter has a 2012 CX-9 with the 6 cyl engine and that's my baseline.
Next time put 93 octane
@@yournightmare9999 It's at a dealership. I can't put gas in it. It was a test drive.
@basspig they use cheapest gasoline so that's how they run on cheap octane
The Telluride is so nice.
Great review guys.
Hopefully you guys get to the 2020 Subaru Outback when it’s released. The onyx xt looks amazing.
Usability is a priority for me
Very good review, all very well explained, and I agree this is one of the best sub out there but very underrated
"A place to grow" except if you are trying to buy a house in Toronto! haha! Love from Vancouver! Another crazy expensive city in Canada. At least you guys in Toronto don't pay $1.70 per litre of gas!
To my U.S. American friends reading this, that's $4.80 per gallon.
songthirtyone 😮
The $1.70 per litre only lasted a few months. It now sits between $1.35 - $1.45 on average, depending on where you live. Better but still painful.
I can't wait for my Cliche Corner shirt to arrive!!! ;)
You Forgot the Ford Explorer 3 row seat and you should try in a sport version
