    As a point of reference for Americans, Barkly is 30 degrees south which is similar to northern Mexico, Texas and northern Florida which are 30 degrees north and all can get snow... but the biggest determinant being altitude. Barkly is at 1,790 m (5,870 ft), similar to Denver Colorado... so snow must be relatively common there.

      Sounds logical all right, but the fact is that it has NOT snowed there since the early 1960s (62/63 or thereabouts)...That's 60 years, so...not normal at all.

      @@sidetrack218 That is interesting, isn't it? I have to confess that I'm not an expert Berkly East's snowfall records per se but do know the general area quite well and know it as fairly common to get snow being in the Drakensberg. I don't have time to look it all up but have come across some reports of actually pretty heavy (and fatal) snowfall events much more recently than 60 years: "Disaster teams in the Eastern Cape were on Wednesday battling to clear roads of snow that fell overnight in Barkly East and Elliot, Arrive Alive said" (Mail & Guardian 2006; 3 people died); and:"The South African government has declared a disaster in five magisterial districts of the Eastern Cape after four people died and at least 100,000 were affected by heavy snowfalls. "It is hard to believe that a scene so beautiful can lead to such devastation," Louis Buys, chief director of disaster management in the Department of Provincial and Local Government, told IRIN on his return from the area. The Department of Public Works pinpointed the districts of Cala, Ugie, Elliot, Indwe and Barkly East as needing emergency assistance after heavy snow and rains had pelted the area since last week" (The New Humanitarian July 2002);
      But ultimately, I defer to Grant if he's a local.

    • @FronosElectronics

      well northern africa is the Sahara which is scorching in the summer and cool in the winter , central africa is on the equator so its humid and tropical , and then southern africa is kind of dry , you could compare it to Colorado in the USA or maybe Spain. So during the winter , only southern africa usually gets the really cold temperatures.
