Every group of people needs a hero. He was not lame. He was just like all of the Metis/Mechif people that have put themselves out there to improve the conditions of all people, not just themselves, then and still yet today. He happened to be educated and in a better position than most to help his people. He did not lead people that did not want to be led. All natives, full and half alike, are painfully aware of poor government treatment. They never stood a chance but they should be remembered for their valor and bravery. The Metis are still here, and still fighting for recognition, and the rights of others, not only for other Metis, but for all indigenous peoples. In the end, Riel wins!!!

@@alphawizard9719 I am like five years late lol, but my histroy teacher said that because Riel studied law, he knew the laws and that they could form their own country, so he was able to help them and try to get their farms back by using the law because he knew what they could and could not do and I don't think all the Metis people spoke English back then (that's how they were kicked off their farms in the first place) so he was able to help with that as well. Thanks for putting this up, but I wish there was better resolution. I remember watching this on the CBC when it first came out in '79, and I watch this copy at least once a year. While I know the film has some inaccuracies, it has an authentic 'feel' and spirit.
Great movie they played it when I was elementary I think. Too young too appreciate it. They really need to do a remake. Great performances by the actors playing riel and dumont.
Some inaccuracies if anyone's interestd: The Soldiers uniforms are pretty inaccurate, they wouldn't of had brown leather cartridge belts on top of their white ones instead they would of had a white ammunition pouch on the right front and a cartridge box slung over the left shoulder on the right hip, the Artillery would of wore Dark Blue uniforms and not khaki, khaki was first worn officially by the Canadian Military in the 2nd Boer war. The Artillery would of been 9 Pounders the ones in the film are a earlier kind of cannon. The drill is the modern kind of drill, in the Northwest Rebellion they wouldn't of swung arms they would of kept them by their side. Various other inacuracies are through out the film but it's still nice to see the war portrayed in a movie.
Some inaccuracies? 1. Gabriel Dumont was at Upper Fort Garry for about 2 weeks and he was very young. He never took part in the Fort Garry events. 2. The Red River in the film is like a creek, (Elzear Goulet scene) being right next to the river, I swear I wouldn'T go swimming in it. Elzear was not shot. According to witnesses, he was stoned to death. 3. Father André is in Ottawa negociating the province of MB, it was L'Abbé Noël Ritchot who was the negociator. 4. Hillarious. Thomas Scott was not a land surveyor.
Thanks for your correction on some of the historical inaccuracies. May I just modify one minor pet peeve in your English composition? When conjugating a verb into conditional past ... please don’t express as “it could of”, or “would of “ -- replace your “of” with “have” ... thanks. Believe me, you’ll have more credibility.
It's done all the time, this was an amazing work, the CBC spent a boat load of money on it, the actors did some pretty great work it would be nice if it could be transfered and used in schools, it's a pretty on the nose telling of what happened. It's history in itself, before this film it was widely felt that Riel was nothing but a trouble maker, this changed opinions on not just Riel, but the plight of the Metis.
when I was in history class I remember him having a mustache in the first rebellion, and in the second he grew a beard. I think the actor just couldn't pull off the facial hair. oh well still a good movie.
After some brief establishing crowd coverage, the first close-up shot of the first human face we see in this film is...William Shatner! Hello
Meet Bastion's grandfather 1:41:15
Same old universal problem; old, rich, white men in suits.
Riel deserves his fate. In fact, it was too good for the likes of him.
Says the hypocrite "Infinitecanadian" with (mostly) videos of the USA on his channel. Your opinion is worthless here.
@@TimD.Morand Since I am a Canadian, my opinion is not worthless at all. Canadians died in order to stop Riel's little rebellion.
infinitecanadian - Vive le Métis. Vive le indigènes Canadien!
@@fritzruttimann1517 Say what? I don't understand.
@@infinitecanadian what would you do if someone showed up on the land you lived on for generations and told you they own it now? IF you say nothing then you're just a coward, unlike Louis who fought for his people and their land.

ah well, he tried
You only live once boy
Hanging was to good for this beast, we did a good job know you can bark more?
+OLIVER CROMWELL My question is what beast?
The man who wanted to have his people saved?the man who stood up Canada Out manned and out gunned and almost one?
OLIVER CROMWELL Louis Riel was a hero that didn’t deserve anything that came to him. I personally think he is more of a hero than a lot of other historical figures
Oliver Cromwell spoken like a true blue Tory
you have no clue ...your just trying to ruffle feather is alll loius Riel fought for 2 nations FN and there cousins to protect a way of life and protect the culture of both....
@@alexmcivor3777 He deserved everything he got. That's what happens when you engage in rebellion against Queen and Country, especially when said country has a railway and artillery, and all you have are religious fanatics and horse thieves.
The actor portraying McDonald not very credible !!! Reminded me to much of 💩 P E TURDEAU !!!
Christopher Plummer. One of Canada's best. I don't doubt he could play Trudeau (Sr) also. Maybe not Harper tho. He was a bit too robotic
KKK
Louis Riel was lame
