I would think one advantage of a press over a power hammer is that with a press, you don't need as thick a slab of concrete under it as you would a power hammer.
My forge press is a repurposed log splitter (champion 20 ton)...so far, I haven't had any issues, but I know another smith, with the identical press, and his literally broke in half, just from the stress of using it as a forge press...I've got all the parts to build a 30 ton "H" frame from scratch, and I'll be doing that this winter...very informative video...keep up the good work!
And then there's the DIY stuff. Where the builders skills definitely exceed that of your average beginner knife maker. It's cool to see what they came up with though, hehe. ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=Homemade+Power+Hammer+For+Forging ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=homemade+Hydraulic+forge+presses
Built an ironworker, and incorporated forging dies. Works very well, and very versatile .
I love your no frills advice. I call it grey haired wisdom from a man that has been there and done it.

Good stuff Walter. I'm wondering if you could do a primer on small wheel attachments, and large wheels for hollow grinding. Thanks 👍
Hello Walter. What are your thoughts on rolling mills? Are they worth building one? What would be the ideal fpm material speed? Thank you.
