  • Eduard Tempest MkV (kit 82121) review part two. One of the most distinguishing characteristics of the Hawker Tempest is the large high speed wing. In this part of the review, I will take a look at how well Eduard was able to recreate it’s unique shape.

    Have you noticed that the wing is for a Series II model Tempest. There are two small teardrp firings at the wing root aft of the inner gear doors that should not be there on a series 1 wing. (This is because the series 1 planes were all or almost all using re-manufactured Typhoon fuselages and wing mounting joists. On the series I there were two fairings that covered a "knee Joint" arm which showed on the UPPER wing root fairing as a rather indistinct bump. This was one of the changes, as on the series II that joint was redesigned, and mounted the other way up, necessitating the fairings on the underside, as seen on the kit. This is yet another small point about Tempests that manufacturers miss. completely.

    Paul... this series of 2 videos has been fantastic, thank you. I really get a lot out of all your informative videos. You have a level of technical expertise and experience that is unique. These 2 videos really helped me with more 'every day' kit building challenges like the approach to the fitting of the wing halves. A felt marker has now joined my tool kit. If you'd be open to it I'd love to see you occasionally do more 'builds' (but in a 'Paul Budzik' way, like this one).

    Impressive tutorial as always. Very helpful to see how you go about fixing issues that come up in this kit and may come up with other kits as well.

    Excellent review!!! Would love to see you do more of them. Eduard does nice kits, but they are not perfect. I tend to build planes in-flight (there is some magic in it) and, in case of Eduard, closing gear doors is pain in the... I had this problem with their MiG-21, Spitfire, MiG-15. I honestly don't understand why - they know size and shape of the opening - it is right there. Airfix can do it, Revell can do it, but not Eduard.

      Very good point about the landing gear. Annoying I can build a 48th scale Javelin, a huge model with wheels up but not the 72nd Eduard 190 which about the size of a moth

    I still have a number of Eduard's "Tan plastic" kits in my stash, plus I've built a pair {Fw-190"D"'s}. They are maddening and pushed my abilities to the limit. Nothing fit properly,{ I got so frustrated with poor panel fit all of them were left open} and location of internal parts according to the instructions was a joke and NO ALIGNMENT PINS FOR ANYTHING!. After way to many hours for a 1/48th kit the model was completed and looks great {if you like open panels}. But when this is suppose to be an enjoyable hobby, the frustration was not worth it. I think I might torture some of my friends and send them some! Great vid, always a pleasure

      I've built the new 109 G10, the tan 190 A and the mig 21, they all look brilliant but share the same problem: too many parts. uneccesary subassemblies when it'd be so much easier if it was one piece. Still think they are the best kits in the world, especially the newer ones, Tamiya has the fit and enigineering but Eduard, give you immaculate surface detail, etch and masks for 25% cheaper.

    • @bobdyer422
      @bobdyer422 3 года назад

      @@agdgdgwngo You must work for Eduard. I'll take Tamiya anyday over Eduard. Better plastic, fit, finish, paint, tools, and subjects. Tamiya doesn't need twelve issues of the same kit just to get it correct. Eduard STILL cannot get the Tempest correct. Eduard 1/32nd 109E Piece of CRAP! Eduard masks DO NOT FIT, THEY ARE JUNK. Using Tamiya tape {inside and outside} does a much better job. Also less frustrating. The only thing I do not like about Tamiya is their decals,{1/32nd} but I've always used aftermarket and always will. I'd rather pay Tamiya prices for pleasure than Eduard prices for frustration.

    • @agdgdgwngo
      @agdgdgwngo 3 года назад

      @@bobdyer422 slightly overreacting there. I get that Tamiya is a big brand with fantastic kits, paint, tools. I'm only comparing model aircraft since Eduard, and Eduard has the better surface detail. In my experience the masks always fit, I have used about 20 sets, some very complex masking jobs. I have already stated Tamiya has the superior fit and engineering. It might be a nice convienent build but if you put a Tamiya 109 G6 next to an Eduard G6 you'll notice one has rivets, the other doesn't. One has seat belts, the other obviously has a decal. I think maybe you got Eduard at a time their kits were inconsistent, and I'm a big fan of Tamiya, I have built a few of their kits and they turned out lovely. The Corsair in 48th scale is a masterpiece and reasonably priced.

      @@agdgdgwngo Overreaction on your part. So if Eduard is so great, why whenever they rerelease a recorrected kit do they {Eduard} take SO MANY parts away? Why does the "NEW" 190's not have a 801? The Tan kits did. No detailed cannons, PE, masks, {that don't fit} and still 2 piece tires? Prices go up for "ED" kits but pieces go down. OH, That's right BRASSIN! Better surface detail than Tamiya. When Eduard has a kit that's named KIT of the YEAR. Like Tamiya's P-47. Then you'll have a point.

    • @agdgdgwngo
      @agdgdgwngo 3 года назад

      @@bobdyer422 it's not about whether or not it wins awards. It's about which has the finer details, you can check with your own eyes if you want, the Eduard kits have rivets, the Tamiya ones doesn't. I'm not judging based on old kits, so I don't care what they added or took away. The fact of the matter is a new Eduard kit in 1/72 has better surface detail than new Tamiya kits. You can check that yourself and at least admit it looks a bit better like I freely state that Tamiya has the best fit around.
      I'm a bit astounded you implied I'm an Eduard shill, I mostly build Airfix but will use whichever brand makes the best kit for the subject

    Thanks Paul, great video, though you have now depressed me as I just got this kit. I have just spent 3 weeks fighting with (Rather than building) the Eduard Mirage IIIc Weekend edition and it was awful, with huge gaps, none-locating components and out of scale pilot. One of worst kits I ever built.
    This was not like model making; It was more like battling the SITH!
    Everyone tells me how great Eduard are and one leading UK modelling website recently reviewed it and claimed that even though slightly dearer than the the new Tamiya Spitfire 1a, this Tempest seemed a much better kit, something I know personally not to be true because I also bought that one too. They have to be joking. These Eduard kits have nice surface details but the fit and assembly experience is abysmal on some of them. This Tempest is their very latest kit; It should be better than this! Tamiya wipe the floor with them, because are a pleasureable modelling experience. Will be avoiding in future.

    I opened up my tempest today. The thin tubes in the cockpit were broken. The box could be smaller and better packed. Have you seen the Special Hobby version Paul? Looking forward to the next part of the Invader. By the way, mine has the most oversized box I've seen in a kit.🇬🇧

    I’ve used the marker technique for years now and it’s invaluable. Great video! A question if I may? Would we be spoilt if we expected every single kit to fall together? A little skill honing has to be what it’s about, right? ;-)

    • @scale-model-workshop
      @scale-model-workshop  5 лет назад +8

      I think developing your modeling skills is one of the key elements. However, this is a review of a kit, and in my opinion "a kit" , means it's something you put together to get a finished model. It must have parts; the parts need to fit together properly; and the finished product should look like what its supposed to look like. A bunch of pretty parts in a box are worthless if the parts don't fit together or the finished model doesn't look correct. Which is why I have no use for "in box reviews." To me, the fixes I'm showing are something you just do ... and I have very little use for the guys who write in with their knickers all twisted acting like these things are the end of the world. I said in this video that what I've shown shouldn't keep you from buying this model. However, by the same token, I expect that a manufacturer, with the technology available today, at the price tag of this kit, should be able to do a better job of design, engineering, and execution. I have no skin in this game ... and I have no agreement with Eduard to minimize shortcomings by hiding them under a finished model with a footnote that " you'll want to do some test fitting" .

      Scale Model Workshop Thank you for your reply and I agree with you 100% in what you say; and the way you are reviewing this kit (and I hope future ones) is refreshing and unique.
      My latter comment was meant very much tongue-in-cheek and was meant with irony. If it offended you I am deeply sorry. I respect you and your work immensely. I, like many of us, look up to you greatly.
      My apologies and sincere regards. Simon

      I think you become a better model maker if you learn how to deal with the poorer kits from the start. I know it sounds strange, but the journey is just as important as the destination.
