  • Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Peter Noone, Superstar Lead Singer of British Band “Herman’s Hermits”
    About Harvey's guest:
Today’s special guest, Peter Noone, is a singer-songwriter, musician, actor and radio host who’s been entertaining audiences since he was a child actor on “Coronation Street”.
After studying at the Manchester School of Music, where he won the Outstanding Young Musician Award, he became an international superstar at the age of FIFTEEN, as lead singer of the phenomenally popular British pop band, “Herman’s Hermits”, selling over 60 million records and 7 gold albums, with 14 gold hit singles including "I'm into Something Good", "Can't You Hear My Heartbeat", "Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter", "Silhouettes", "Wonderful World", "I'm Henry the 8th, I Am", "There's a Kind of Hush", "The End of the World", and many more.
“Herman’s Hermits” were twice named by Cashbox magazine as "Entertainer of the Year", and they opened the 1970 Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium. Our guest has appeared on hundreds of TV shows including Ed Sullivan, Jackie Gleason, Dean Martin, Sonny and Cher, “Laverne and Shirley”, “Quantum Leap”, “Married with Children”, and of course, as “Paddington” on the ever-popular “As the World Turns”.
And he’s starred in TV movies including “The Canterville Ghost”, “Pinocchio”, and “Dick Whittington”, as well as a number of feature films including “Mrs. Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter”, “Hold On!”, “When The Boys Meet The Girls”, “Never Too Young to Rock”, and the unforgettable “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band”. As a solo artist, he recorded the hit singles, “Oh! You Pretty Things", "Meet Me on the Corner Down at Joe's Cafe", and "I Think I'm Over Getting Over You", as well as his solo album, “One of the Glory Boys”. He also conquered London’s West End AND Broadway, playing the role of the dashing young hero, “Frederic”, in “The Pirates of Penzance”, which he took on tour all over the world.
And when he’s not performing concerts before sold-out audiences, he’s hosting his own immensely popular show on Sirius XM’s 60’s Gold station.

Peter Noone is a remarkable human being. Aside from having sung some of the best songs that ever emerged from the 60’s “British invasion”, he successfully navigated worldwide fame from the age of 15 without the all-too-common emotional and substance abuse problems. He’s had a long, stable happy marriage. He conquered TV, Broadway, the West End and radio. And he’s remained a humble, super nice guy. I just loved getting to interview him. I hope you enjoy this in-depth up close and personal conversation.

I had the pleasure of seeing Herman’s Hermits at Angiano’s near Detroit just before covid and he came out after he played. he really does listen. He talked to me about his songs being pretty simple to play after I told him I tried to get my band to play I’m into something good. And took a minute to talk about some of the musicians he worked with in the studio. Very humble, personable, and sincere. I’ll always treasure that.

There are like 26 singles! Saw Herman's Hermits in Peekskill NY last night- waiting for posts- I only took pictures. Enjoyed the show. Can't wait to go back. The fans are " Noone-atics" ( rhymes with Lunatics). Following the band for years- I fit right in owning 4 Lps alot of their singles and recently CDs.

Peter is a really nice human being. Humble, I think. My favorite songs of his are No Milk Today, and Kind of a Rush. I enjoyed them. Their act was harmless and much fun. I am so glad he got to be interviewed by literally the best interviewer of the century. Mr. Brownstone should be teaching future interviewers how to do it. If they are smart they are watching. One of the best things to happen to me in the past several months was finding Harvey. My dog passed away May 23 and this is helping me get over the devastating loss because I concentrate on excellence. So you see, I am indebted to you, sir.

I have always been drawn to Peter Noone himself and his music. Right now i am having my own HH renaissance having seen him on retro ME TV Ed Sullivan Show a few weeks ago singing, Now Ain't That Just A little Bit Better. "Love, love, love, is all I can give ya. Sweet, sweet love, as long as I may live..." A thrill and I can't stop watching it! The electricity of the young girls in the audience is shown, adding to the thrill capturing the spirit of the day. What a charmer. I have not seen Peter interviewed before that i recall. Just clips of his retro tours where he has a lot of fun with his audience and spoofs his own aging which is kind of charming. Your interview meets my needs of Peter being the person I would want him to be. Grounded and seemingly humble. Thank you for presenting him to me in this moment in time. "Herman' is to the pop world what John Davidson and Lesley Ann Warren are to Disney and The Happiest Millionaire!!! You have an incredible ability to pluck the somewhat obscure (by today's standards) that I want to see!@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980

You didn't ask the big question...why did Herman's Hermits break up in the early 70's? My theory is that by the early 1970's Herman's Hermits was no longer relevant on radio playlists. A producer of a record company once turned down The Doors because he told them that they looked and sounded like a sullen angry group of young men. The producer wanted to know why The Doors couldn't be more like Herman's Hermits. Well the tables eventually turned on groups like Herman's Hermits and Gary Lewis and Playboys as sullen angry looking groups like The Doors were what popular culture wanted to hear on radio by the early 1970's. That is my theory.
