It was fun because it was about the players and their trash talking, and Shea Stadium. The rivalry started in 1997 and ended in 2002, after Bobby V got fired, and then the Mets stunk in 2003-2004.

Tom Glavine in Game 3 that's one of his best postseason performances. Obviously it's not the same as Game 6 of the 1995 World Series against a stacked Cleveland team but 1999 doesn't get much attention

    • @hmhm856

I cant tell how many times Tom Glavine pitched a gem in a postseason game, where he got no run support and he had to either shut down the other team or keep em low. He was sensational in the postseason in his career.

With a Subway Series lurking in the dreams of New York fans, the upstart Mets faced a strong Atlanta Braves team that won 9 of 12 from them during the regular season, including 5 out of 6 in the last 2 weeks of the season.
And in Game 1, Greg Maddux used his pitching and defense to stymie the Mets. His battery mate, Eddie Perez, collected two hits, including a HR, as the Braves won the opener, 4-2. The next afternoon, Melvin Mora hit his ML home run in the postseason to give the Mets an early lead. But in the 6th, 2-run blasts by Brian Jordan and Eddie Perez gave Atlanta all they needed for a 4-3 win as John Smoltz saved the win. Back in Shea Stadium for Game 3, the Mets, who made only 68 errors all year, committed two of them in the first inning, leading to an Atlanta run. Tom Glavine and the bullpen took it from there for the Braves' third straight win, 1-0.
The Mets' were a loss away from being swept. And when Jordan and Klesko went back-to-back in the 8th, the Braves looked ready to sweep. But with the sacks full and two out, John Olerud--who homered earlier--bounced one up the middle for a single and a 3-2 Mets' lead, which was saved by Benitez.
The fifth game would be a classic. Olerud's two run homer in the first put the Mets ahead. By the 6th, the Braves tied it at 2. And both teams got out of several jams, including the bases loaded in the 6th. It stayed tied going into extra innings. By the 15th inning, both teams were running out of players. In the top half, Octavio Dotel, the 9th pitcher the Mets used, surrendered an RBI hit to Keith Lockhart. Once again, the Mets were three outs away. But in the bottom half, they loaded the bases with one out, pinch-hitter Todd Pratt walked to force home the tying run. Then, against Kevin McGlinchy, Robin Ventura hit the longest "single" in baseball history for a 4-3 Mets' win. It cleared the wall for a Grand Slam, but Ventura didn't get to second base, and thus the "Grand Slam Single". It didn't matter to the Mets. All they knew was they became the second team ever to trail by three games and force Game 6.
Back at Turner FIeld for Game 6, Al Leiter didn't get an out as the Braves scored five times in the first. A pinch-single by Jose Hernandez gave the Braves breathing room in the 6th to make it 7-3, or so it seemed. In the 7th, the Mets scored twice, and then, Mike Piazza went opposite field off Smoltz with a man on to tie at at 7. Hoping to force a sudden death 7th game, the Mets' went ahead in the 8th inning only for Atlanta to knot it up in the bottom half. In the 10th, Pratt's sacrifice fly put the Mets up 9-8. But in the bottom half, the Braves put two on for Ozzie Guillen, who singled off Benitez to drive in the tying run.
Come the bottom of the 11th, the Braves loaded the bases with one out against reliever Kenny Rogers. On a 3-and-1 count, Rogers threw one high to Andruw Jones, who didn't swing. Ball four. Gerald Williams scores and the Braves escape, 10-9, for their 5th pennant in the 1990s. Bring on the Yankees.
As for the Mets, tip your cap for an excellent ride through their most thrilling season since 1986.

John Franco and Armando Benitez ruined the Mets in game 6.
Benitez blew game 4 against the Dbacks (but Mets won). Benitez ALMOST blew game 4 against Atlanta when Ozzie Guillen almost hit a game tying solo home run in the top of the 9th inning (it missed by 5 feet from being fair). And then Benitez blew this game 6 in the bottom of the 10th inning with the Mets up by one.
And John Franco blew the 1998 Wild Card chances the Mets had with his horrendous 1998 season.
And this 1999 NLCS pretty much the final postseason success that Atlanta will have with Bobby Cox as their manager. With the exception of 2001 NLDS when a very weak Atlanta team beat the Astros (which says more about the Astros postseason chokes and not Atlanta), Atlanta will not win another postseason series under Cox.
No one could beat the 1999 Mets. Only the 1999 Mets could beat the 1999 Mets, and they did

This would have been the greatest LCS in history had the Mets hold on to that game 6. John Franco and Armando Benitez really broke my heart, they were more culpable than Kenny Rogers. Those Bobby Valentine Mets, specially in 1998 and 1999 really were something else when it came to drama.
When Piazza hit that game tying home run in game 6, I really thought that the Mets were gonna be the first team ever to come down from an 0-3 hole. But nope, Franco and Benitez didnt want that to happen .
And Eddy Perez, not Chipper Jones, destroyed my Mets in this series.

Folks around baseball were salivating at the prospect of a 'Subway Series' in October of '99, the Yankees pushed past the Red Sox in 5 games but the Mets had their hands full with their arch rivals from Atlanta. As it turned out, despite the Mets pushing the NLCS all the way to extra innings in Game 6( after their memorable 15-inning win in Game 5 thanks to Robin Ventura's famed 'Grand Slam Single' ), they just couldn't overtake the powerhouse Braves in the end. And to lose the series on a bases-loaded walk in extras...a brutal way to close out an exciting & memorable season for the Mets.
But we wouldn't really have to wait that much longer for an eventual 'Subway Series' in New York to eventually happen though.
