How anyone can say this has traumatised them is beyond me is beyond me, I first watched this on BBC TV back in 1964 aged 9, for me it's a beautiful magical Fairytale that has stood the test of time! An absolute Masterpiece 💯
And my child watched it in the 2000s!
Any one who is traumatized by this marvelous and God inspired tale must have some serious mental heal problems!
Lol what you weren’t scared of the evil vertically challenged guy spreading his evil? THAT’S what is weird!
Fun fact: A Radio Times readers' poll in 2004 voted this programme the 20th spookiest TV show ever.
Me too I loved it 😊
Wow! When I was 6yrs. old I watched this and was mesmerized, I have just watched this and at 62yrs. old I was again mesmerized and enchanted. Thank you so much for sharing
Its an honour, babe
I don't think I have ever recovered from watching this on BBC Tales From Europe as a child.
I know what you mean! There are whole websites that are dedicated to us children who saw this and it had a huge impact.
GracieVision yes the dwarf was real scary
Me too,my husband bought me the DVD about five years ago it’s wonderful to have this, it’s a treasure to me.
This scared me to death as a kid but loved it.
Yeah me and my sister have traumatic memories of it....how to mess your kids up in a simple Euro TV series! lol!
The fact this was made in a heavily bombed out Leipzig not long after the war makes its beauty more profound than words can really describe.
Watched this as a child. Lovely heart-warming moments when the princess did a good deed. When she helped the fish, I adored that scene. Thoroughly deserves a retrospective award such as a BAFTA.
I saw this when I was a child and was entranced. I never forgot it. Now I have finally found it. All I could recall was the giant fish. Wow, just wow. I've had this on my mind since I watched this all those years ago. I never found this disturbing only fascinating. Great rewatch.
Julie Bear perfect name to appreciate this show ! You gotta hand it to those Germans to mix fairy tale with horror story and make an epic show
@@steveshepherd2712 Agree. But I never saw it as a horror show.
Me2😁
😊😊absolutely brilliantly made, this really should be on netflix or prime, kids would love watching this instead of the nonsensical rubbish on today! When I was a child, it took me to another dimension, where singing ringing trees, existed! A wonderful escape from the mundane!
@@tinaari88 I told my son about this film. He went and found a copy and he loves it.
my sincerest apologies to Michael Sheen
I apologize to his peen 😔
Oh MY GOD KAJSNSKSKSNSNSMSK
Michael is not mad at you!

peen gang
Do not apologize! Even Michael Sheen openly admits it is a dark classic life changing masterpiece! It may leave scars but it is still a classic!
This is magical I remember watching this on the black and white tv back in the early 60s ( I am 66 now) when my little grand kids nieces etc. come to visit they sit there clicking away on their tablets and phones, when I put this on within minutes they stop clicking away and are starring at the tv totally absorbed, in Deutsche doesn't seem to matter they can still follow it, I particularly like the stuck up Princess she makes me smile, this is a gem thank you alixno for uploading it.
This is one of the greatest things I have ever seen.
Loved it!
Agreed 😊
@@juliebear1505 of course, you're a bear!
@@hopefuldave Roar!
R.I.P. Eckart Dux (1926-2024), he was 97. Now Christel Bodenstein is the last surviving star of this film.
I remembered this from my childhood. Managed to find it on cd about 5 years ago . Watched it with my grandchildren they were mesmerized by it .
I sometimes still watch it on my own 😊
I remember this as a young child when it was shown on TV in the 60's. There could only have been s handful of episodes, but it made its mark on my memory.
Tales From Europe...it seemed to go on for years, but films like this were broken up into serials. This is the one everyone remembers.
Same, hallo,😍😍😍😎😎😎
Anne Lise
I also remember this from Tales from Europe on BBC1 & it was compulsive viewing at that time for a 7/8 year old child. The 'troll' under the bridge scared the fuck out of me. Heidi was also a program from that series.
@@panchosvillos also Belle and Sebastion
Remembered this . Shown in the school holidays, still receiving therapy.
I remember this from my youth, fantastic. Just sat and watched it again with my two granddaughters aged two and four, I narrated it for them, they were absolutely enthralled by it, they sat all the way through it transfixed, they loved it. That just goes to show how good it is. Better than most rubbish made today.
This classic East German film was broadcast on UK BBC1 Children's TV as a series with an English narrator. It was presented in black and white. I was terrified by the evil dwarf and watched from behind the sofa. The original German dialogue playing under the English narration sounded sinister and scary! I had no idea it was a movie or that it was in colour!
My dad couldn’t believe how colorful it was when we got him the videotape.
@@offmodelcartoon1042 Me too! I always the remember it being broadcast in b&w on BBC1 which gave it a meaner moodier scarier look! Watching in those bright colours was an entirely different experience although it still scares the living bejeezus out of me!
@@_JSHouse That big goldfish terrorised my nights for months!
Presume it was filmed in colour as even though most would be watching in black and white when first shown, it would be future proofed as colour tv was beginning to make an appearance and obviously would develop further.
I’m an American and I just learned about this film today. That dwarf is a creepy lil’ fella! 😅
Thanks so much for the upload, I saw this as a child in Dublin in black and white. I was terrified (ugh the evil dwarf, and the broken hearted bear) but transfixed. It has an ursurpassed, richly halucenogenic, lyrical beauty with real darkness unlike the ADHD sanitized drivel the kids get shoveled nowadays. A masterpiece of East German Cinema
I came for Michael Sheen's peen and I stay for a great movie! Maybe I should talk about it on my channel sometime. I often analyse classic, obscure, and underrated films to challenge the ways people think about and approach cinema. Should give my work a watch sometime.
OMG! This popped up when I was looking for the Robinson Crusoe series I watched back in the 70s. I remember this from a kid and had forgotten all about it till now. Brilliant !
My life is now explained, I watched this before colour TV IN UK, NOW I KNOW WHY IM MESSED UP ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. The music still makes me happy.
Those flame effects are amazing, using colored cloth with fans blowing them. Ingenious!
Didn’t realise it was 1957. Saw it in the mid 60s in b&w and it’s still just as enchanting.
Thank the gods for that I was not imagining it, It really was a thing and not a figment of my imagination.
thank you to who ever put this up here.
A bit like the Noddy Big Ears advert that got banned!! :D
One of my favourites , so nice a fairy tale, no modern tech, I had no idea it was 57, I watched it in the 60s as a child
Absolutely magnificent! I was born on April 1961. I was gifted this film at the age of 3! It is inspired by God Himself and I thank you from the very depths of my heart for bringing this to those who understand and appreciate God's delightful work! Thank you very much indeed!
God had nothing to do with it. Humans made it.
Loved this as a kid. Scared the sh*t out of me, but that's what fairytales are for. Great to see it again
It's possibly 45 years since I last saw this, and it really isn't that bad. Thank you Mr Sheen, for the 70's childhood revisit.
Plo
Do you remember , terry tunes astronut ?
I really was in love with this , my mum was hoovering at Christmas when this was on and I said no stop till it ends. Such memories ♥️
Frightened the life out of me and gave me bad dreams at about the age of 6! The evil dwarf was terrifying with his magic powers :)
Me too
Same here., hated that evil Dwarf.
This used to freak me out
When I was a kid
I don't think I ever got over it
Absolute classic in my youth! I was utterly entranced!
I’ve often wanted to see this programme, it was a huge part of my regime, after school I’d run home to watch the magic, all very innocent with morals, and principles! , not like today’s programmes for children., I always wanted to know ho the tale ends, but even here on RUclips, there is no reference to the order of episodes which is a pity! But, yes, I was around 6 years old , great entertainment, and good for the imagination! ✨✨✨💯
OK, I'm here because of Michael's tweet... Kinda confusing)))
Go check out my other stuff if youd like
This show and Robinson Crusoe of the same period made such an impression as a child. The fascination of an innocent open mind. No idea of war, sex, corruption, or the realisation that the Princess looks like Irma Grese. You can never get that back.
I haven't seen this since I was a child in the 1960s and I certainly haven't seen it in colour before. In the UK it was in a series called Tales From Europe and it was split into several parts which were shown weekly. There are bits of it that I'd forgotten and other bits that I never forgot from childhood. It's been really nice seeing it again with it being in colour and and as a complete film rather than being serialised by the BBC.
Quite a nice Movie !
18:30 that look of weary "I'm a bear" resignation. We've all been there...
This scared me so much when I was young... but watching it now is wonderful! #TeachChildrenToBeKindToAnimals for a better tomorrow. ❤🐾❤🐾❤
Watched this as a child but only remembered parts of it and it would have been in black & white , enjoyed it better as an adult.
I watched this on a black and white TV in the '60's. Obviously, I had no idea that it had actually been made in colour but I still vividly remember the fish and frozen waterfall and of course, the scary dwarf!
That dwarf and the witch from paulis the wood gnome still give me the shivers
I head about this movie from a cold war podcast. I actually enjoyed watching this film and the princess pulled my heart strings. She is absolute beautiful 🙂
Ahhh... Cold War Conversations? That's how I found my way here too!
@@hollywoodnights yep lol.
I saw this about 2 years ago and was simply enchanted. It is a work of art. Beautiful x
All the DEFA German fairytale movies are masterpieces.
The Bear and the dwarf !! Scared the life out of me and gave me nightmares, only recently been reminded of this program by my older sisters which I had buried for 50 years 😲
I can see from reading the comments on here I wasn't the only youngster that was frightened by this programme. I had nightmares about the bear and the dwarf was ingrained into my psyche for years!!
You *must* have been traumatized if you went on to bury your sisters! :-)
so memorable foor us even in black and white thankyou thankyou for finding this x
Finally a copy that isn't dubbed!! Excellent
The ending with the fire is like something out of David Lynch.
A film from my childhood, never forgot it, havnt seen it in about 15 years, always loved it
I loved this. A friend bought the DVD for me several years ago - first time I ever saw it in colour. And the extras regarding the political influences were very interesting.
Lovely to watch again. I did find it a bit scary as a little girl. Fabulous to see it in colour. How many hours of work must have been spent dressing that set fantastic scenery and effects.
Its a Loveliest Fairy tale and beautiful movie.
Incroyable ! Et visuellement très soigné.
Absolutely brilliant!
I first saw this in Black and White on a small television with a grainy picture.....I was 4 years old.... around 1961.................watching from behind the sofa. It TERRIFIED me for life! AAARGH It has somehow lost some of the terror as it is now in colour but these German 'Fairy Tales' were scary! Great film though! I finally managed to find the DVD!
Decades and decades later,
and I am still so upset that
they did not help that poor
suffering fish ! I remember
that more than the evil Troll
But the tree restored everything to the way it was meant to be, so the fish was able to swim happily back to its lake. :)
xnks for sharing, beautiful film!
Wow, I've found the most disturbing thing from my childhood on RUclips! Please God I don't regress!
So true! I just found it because of a discussion on childhood shows and I remembered this with someone else. Very weird show. 😬
So satisfying, to see the ending, it took 60 years but wow it isn’t going to bother me again, that I missed the last episode🥰😘😍😊
The fur on the bear give me the chills down my spine,
so i watched from behind the the settee
Wonderful, thank you!
Awesome.
Thrilled to find this. Thank you for posting it. I haven't seen it in colour before
This put the wind up me when I was a kid, scary stuff. There was another one called The Tinderbox, scary giant dogs with sparks coming out of their eyes if my nightmares remind me correctly!
I remember it as well early 1960ties the soldier climbed in to a hollow tree bbc childrens hour lol 😀😀😀💙💜💙💜
The Tinderbox was really scary!! with those huge black dogs ..I couldnt watch it back then..those eyes! 🤩
Great stuff! So glad I came across this!
thanks for sharing. A huge childhood memory!
Thanks for uploading this been wanting to see it again for ages.
This movie was awesome. Loved it!!
o my , its the whole series in one! amazing. danke
Such a delight remembered from childhood 💗💗💗 Thankyou 💗💗💗
Thank you for the upload it’s appreciated
Not seen this since the 1960's, brilliant! Thank you.
This was made same year I was born. I loved it and think it was a great story and not scary at all, it taught children in simple terms good versus evil.
Imagine what young children are watching now and how traumatized they will be 😢
Does anyone have the version that is narrated in English? It’s not a proper dub, it just has a narrator who kinda explains everything that’s going on. It’s cool to see its original version with subtitles, and I like it better this way. I’m just looking for the narrated version for nostalgia purposes.
Wonderful movie!!!!!
This scared the absolute shit out of 4-5 year-old me when (think it was the BBC ?) it was shown as part of children's TV !!
Wunderbar. And they all lived happily ever after...
The King reminds me of Worzel Gummige, now.
A popular childrens series in the 1979 and 1981...
My dad watched this when he was 7.
Episode 1
*THIS WAS HEAVEN* 🧚♀ and the Bear WAS real..but the Malevolent Dwarf was the most frightening in the Land...
so nice!!
Remember this from UK school holidays when I was 7/8 yrs in B/W. Kinda remembered it more "epic" but good to see it again.
This totally gave me nightmares...it was brilliant
Never work with animals and children ... unless you have a terrific wardrobe budget, and fabulous hair! Oh, and the full Berlin philharmonic orchestra as your backing group.
Once she became humble, when her beauty was taken away, she became much nicer, with her inner beauty showing thro.
OMG this was from Tales from round the world and it was shown at least once a year on BBC. In black and white. Super spooked by the dwarf, the plastic dolphin, the frozen pond etc etc. DIdn't remember how kitsch it is!
Enchantment
I loved it
One of my earliest memories is watching this. The Wicked Dwarf scared the hell out of me.
I'm here via Neil Gaimans Tumblr post, I'll check back afterwards
Thanks. Too good to be true!
Fascinating fairy tale movie. Love the cinematography. Definitely a movie that girls would love. I came to view this movie because someone made a music video of the song ,"Our Winter Love" using scenes from this movie. The person implied in the description that the song was in this movie. Since it was impossible for this 1962 song to be in a 1957 movie, I wanted to see how this song was used in the movie in 1957. That is why I came to this sight. ......I give the movie a "Thumbs Up" still even thought the song is not in the movie.
Who could possibly object?
It was part of my best childhood TV viewing. Lovely memories!
Decades later, I regularly screened a privately owned 35mm print at Tyneside Cinema for children's matinee shows. I'm not certain that the Lady who owned the print also owned the exhibition rights but it was fair to assume that she did.
The correct aspect ratio is 1.37:1 Academy. It loses a lot when 'topped and tailed' for widescreen as it is here.
One of my earliest memories is being taken to see this film (proceeding it was an ant and the grasshopper shadow puppet animation, i think?) and the image of the fire has stuck with me since
10:27 and the inspiration for
' smoke on the water '💧😊 deep purple 💜👌
This movie is a trip.
i've only ever seen this in black and white....it had a more oppressive eerie quality.
I remember as a school kid watching this, like many it frightened the shit out of me,
Mind. Blown.
I thought this was just an LSD nightmare in the 70's. Now I find out it was real...
RIP
