  • The 2816 is returning back to Canada after completing its Final Spike Tour, and we'll see it running through the Midwest. The 2816 'Empress' is a classy steam engine built back in 1930, and kept in immaculate shape. Trailing behind it, was a pair of EMD FP9As, boxcar, and sleek passenger cars.
We'll chase the 2816 over a few days, and over hundreds of miles! Starting down in Iowa, we'll see it along the shores of a flooded Mississippi River. After capturing it at Waupeton, we'll see it again in Guttenberg, Harpers Ferry, Lansing, and other places along the line. Even with some street running, with barge traffic! After this, and a few days later, we'll chase it along the Paynesville Sub and watch it RACE west. In stark contrast to the first half of the video, the train made GREAT time in the morning sun.
Along the way, we'll see it crossing massive bridges, running in the rain, and kicking up lots of smoke! It was great to see the 2816 again; who knows when it'll be back!

Excellent footage! I was a fellow chaser on the Davenport to St. Paul day, and I cannot believe how poorly that train was treated by dispatch the entire way up. There was radio communication before departure in Davenport from the crew to DS saying "We have 400 miles to run today, and we could use all the help possible".
Not 5 minutes later, DS sent an empty oil train in front of them out of Davenport. The crew saw that and immediately called higher ups to have DS put the train in the hole to let them pass. Unfortunately that didn't do much as we all saw, since they still managed to get 3-4 hours late by the time they hit the river line at La Crosse.

They got SHAFTED BADLY on the ICE... I was driving down from the Twin Cities, and thought they'd move right along and up the line. When I got to Marquette, I saw that they were lining a local out on the main and I had a bad feeling... Sure enough, they got delay after delay, freight after freight...nearly four hours behind what the plan was for.

Awesome video as always! Just wanted to mention that I share the frustration that was that chase up the Marquette Sub. I waited for it near Brownsville, MN (south of La Crescent) for around 8 hours as I got there really early assuming it would make good time. NOPE. The train took 10 hours to go 150 miles out of Davenport and didn't reach my location until a little after 7 PM. I did manage to get them a couple of times up onto the River Sub, but I had to cut the chase short north of Winona as it was getting too dark. Needless to say, I was much happier with the much faster chase up the Paynesville Sub two days later! The thing is, its hard to blame the TWC nature of the Marquette Sub as they made good time up the Detroit Lakes Sub two days later, which is also TWC. Just not sure what was going on with that Marquette dispatcher as he kept lining trains ahead of 2816 even when they were way behind approaching La Crescent.

That first local was K38, I caught them at McGregor around 10:20 AM and I too expected 2816 to be making a lot better time than they did. I was in that group toward bottom center at 5:39, that jagoff in the Chevy SUV stayed in the perfect spot to obstruct the front of the engine from my angle the entire way down.

It was a rough and brutal day chasing this train. If it could hold them up, and delay them, it seemed to. That pacer at Lansing made A LOT of people upset. Thanks for watching!

Great footage Douglas! The drone does wonders, footage certainly not as good when shot trackside. You are so right about the chase on the Paynesville Sub. Buffalo killed me with the traffic and I hit every red light. Thank God for the service stop at South Haven. Anyway he chase was much easier on the DL and Noyes Subs.

I asked my grandparents to see it at Thief River Falls since that would have been the first time they would have seen a steam locomotive in over 70 years. But unfortunately it had already gone past.

Kind of a random question did you happen to let a couple people know they missed the train by a little bit? I ask because my fiance and I were west of Kimball waiting for it and missed it and someone stopped to let us know we had just missed it if it wasn't for them we would have lost all chance at seeing it so I appreciated the help lol. Also great footage 👌
