- Time to learn something new! The goats can’t move to the container without a protected area. So with the stalls finished, we begin the process of learning how to build metal field fencing - an entirely new process for us. Step 1 involves setting the corner posts and then cutting, grinding, and welding it all together.

Good, sturdy fence! That should keep those goat babies inside where they can be safe. If you made it through with only one boggle, you are doing fantastic. (Yes, I've constructed a fence or two.) Ashley, I know what you mean about jobs that seem to go on forever, but you are getting closer all the time.

Just a hint on self protection, spray starch your over shirt before you weld, the splatter will mostly will bounce off and wont burn thru to your skin, also a mix of 50/50 soap and water in a spray bottle sprayer on an welding area before you weld, 80-90% of the splatter can be scarped off with a heavy flat scraper

Glad you did the pipe fence. Much safer low maintenance goat friendly 😊. I recently found out that lavender oil will heal cut. I’ve used it on a burn and was amazed that it didn’t blister & stopped the pain. But a friend recently cut his arm with a grinder and stitches were needed. He said no to stitches so cleaned it applied a few drops of lavender. Pulled it shut with 2 bandaids wrapped it for two days and when he took off the bandage it was closed. He chose to leave it open for air. He did continue to put lavender on. I wanted to wrap it again. It’s been over a week and is healed. There are only two companies I trust. doTerra or Young Living, there oils are the best.
Isn’t it a blessing to have the kind of relationship with ALL our munchkins as WE do! Our family’s, not all family’s as blessed.

Since the pipes are already nice and rusty we're not really worried about it. Rusted metal is a thing here in the desert :)

It’s super easy to get a 90 degree corner off a straight wall. The 3-4-5 method. Mark a point 3’ down the wall and mark your line 4’ from the wall and when moved so that the two points are 5’ apart you have a 90 degree angle. 6-8-10 also works.
Most projects take longer than we thought they would. The key to success is to keep going and don't give up. Good job on the fence!👍👌👏

The goat station is something that had to happen sometime anyway.
The house is going to be such a MUCH HUGER project. Kids don't wait, human, or goat.
When they arrive they are there. Good to take a break on the house and get ready.
Those goats are going to be (ARE!) a huge bonus. Best to keep them healthy and easy to husband.
Wow, welding a metal fence for the goats. That's a big corner pole. More concrete. Wow, that fence is HEAVY DUTY! Great, another water tank for the goat barn. I'm glad you'll have a sink inside too. I hope you can persevere Ashley. I'm sure it can feel overwhelming at times. You guys are such an inspiration. I'm so glad you saw James' fence and he is helping you learn how to do it. I remember the metal you got to protect the PVC going under the foundation. I like that "H" brace all the way around method of building the fence. The saddle cut looks cool. Welding it all up! Hi tiny shiny homesteaders, just loving this project. It’s putting you through your learning paces which become a skill set with your home build. Jon, I worry seeing angle grinders with no guards. Your fingers are so close to that cutting wheel with little protection. The reason I worry is that I have experience as an industrial nurse as well as being an avid DIY hobbyist. I have seen grinder wheels shatter and dig into parts of workers bodies. These guys were strong men but the grinder pulled from their hands. Fingers have been lost too. I was using a small grinder and had an accident. It kicked back and bit. The injury was a wrist cut which took out a tendon too, 4 months of physio and a few surgeries later sorted it. I have to maintain lots of exercise to retain that mobility and keep the repaired tendon supple. Having noted that, put the guard on , please.
Just a suggestion, you may already be going to do it. But you may want to cap the top of all the verticle pipes, so the rain can't collect to rust them from the inside, and also to keep wasps and other critters from creating homes inside.
Caps are a must
Yeah have to get them on the next trip to a large town.
You may want to put coyote rollers across that fence.
A coyote can jump a 5 foot fence easily and do it constantly in my neighborhood.
A solar powered electric fence at the top around the perimeter would also work and be easier to install.
I’d go 6-7 foot minimum with the electric fence wires in maybe two lines parallel to the top bar.

Double fence using corridor as dog run( Shepard or Bird dogs) or your wonderful Labapoos or whatever those are? Just started watching, WANT to MARATHON
So, we have a 9 strand high tensile electric perimeter fence. This 5' field fence is inside it. There is one Great Pyrenees in with the goats at all time and one roaming the entire property as well. So quadruple protection :)

I just got home from spending the day with my better half at the beach in France whilst we looked at the Cliffs of Dover in England. what a transition from sea to desert. the poles and supports look quite fine. Jonathon, Tippin trick, next time after you find your square lines, move your string like you have a 5 inch pipe is what that looks like move it 2 1/2 inches over that way the strangle be exactly where the edge of your fence pipe needs to be Save a little bit of manual labor
Leather sleeves and apron is a good item when welding
the out of line post only needs a little tap and shove with the tractor bucket, Great job

the whole where does the pipe go in relationship to where are the strings reminded me of when people first learn to cut wood and they have to learn kerf and pick a rule and follow it consistently or their stuff won't fit right

Harbor Freight sells some Kevlar sleeves that I use when I am welding and its too hot to wear my welding jacket. They also have leather sleeve too I think. I have both, forgot where I got the leather ones.

Pipe welding can be challenging. Always want a groove there you want to weld like a v. And yes leathers are your friend. And chaps trust me leg burns are the worst.
Looking good! Good luck with your project.😅 just a note: we have a fence like that, my husband put it up 50 years ago we haven’t had any problem with the rust our pipe didn’t have caps either. We live in Tucson and really don’t get that much rain over here.
Yeah all the rust comments are making us laugh. Surface rust is just a thing here in the desert. We will put caps on them, though. Not great to hold a bunch of water inside and weaken the cement.

The pipe was already pretty rusted, and with the low humidity here it's not really a concern. Looks cool, too :)

I am a single woman living alone. I renovated most of my house by myself. I ended up running out of money. So i have to stop my plans until I can save money to continue my renovation process 😊😊😊😊😊 Hopefully next year. I will be turning 60 this year. Its frustrating. Cutting those saddles in the field are hard and there will be a lot of wasted pipe. A band saw that can articulate like an ellis 1500 would make it so much easier. Cut them in the shop at 35 degree angles. Tack a piece of rebar or sucker rod across the bottom so that it spans the hole and will make sure that the fence follows the grade as the pipe won't sink down in the hole all the way, it will dangle a bit. Line everything up with a piece of pvc and then backfill the hole.
Pipes were already cut to length, and we don’t have a shop so this was the best way to do it for us.
