I've played this arcade mode so many goddamn times. For those who don't know, to unlock characters you needed to uncover a 3x3 tiles image of them, and clearing arcade mode gave you a certain number of strikes to reveal one tile at a time with. Sounds simple enough, right?
Well here's the thing: you have no control on the strikes, they hit whatever they please. So once only one or two tiles remained, it wasn't uncommon to go through the whoooole thing Max just did, only for the five or so strikes to hit spaces that were already uncovered, meaning what you just did was for NOTHING. Geez, thanks, video game!
Still loved it though. Buckets of fun.
Yup. I had this exact problem. I beat Iori on Gamer something like 10 times in a row and didnt unlock a single tile.
Capcom REALLY needs to make CVS3. Capcom and SNK teaming up was the BEST thing in the 2000s.

The game actually plays much faster. Probably emulator. Also 2v2 mode you can switch teammates anytime ala mvc. PS1 couldn't do that
The amount of frames in Ken's kicks honestly surprised me.
Dimps does 2d very well(cause former SNK employees). Check Sonic Advance 1-3, Digimon Battle Spirit, and Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure.

I'm stunned that there's a playable fighting game on a 90's handheld game system. Not just playable, but also kind of fun. This game looks like it was pretty ahead of the time.

Pre gba and pvp portable fighters are a mix bag. You get some amazing port like the SNK gb games, street fighter alpha on gbc, or killer instinct and then there’s the MK ports.

Never had a NeoGeo Pocket but one of the best fighting games I played on the Gameboy Color was a game called "Power Quest".
It was about people playing with these miniature robots toys in tournaments and stuff.
The most difficult fight in the game was not the final boss, but instead, randomly in the world map, the shoutcaster of the tournaments appeared and challenge you into a fight. He could randomly use an item that refills his health (a very expensive item to get in the shop) and not only that, he was tough as nails.
After trying like 20 times, I managed to beat him (without grinding and buying the super expensive health item). Then I did it again in front of my friends who couldn't believe it until they see it. I beat it a 3rd time later on, and then I moved on.
Kyo: "Are you hot too?"
Ken: "I'll crush you anytime, bud!"

Man I loved this game as a kid. Easily one of the best handheld fighters of all time. The amount of fan service and love SNK put into this game was amazing, there were even extra moves for each character you could buy, like secret techniques. . I begged my parents for a Neo Geo Pocket Color JUST for this game.

The music for the Mai fight at 12:00 is based off of Mozart's "Dies Irae" from his D minor Requiem.
yes, it was also that stage's theme in Fatal Fury 2 and Special. when you play it in the Arcade Mode, the music for that stage is always this one, mirroring how it was also the final stage of Krauser's world tournament. even the intro is the same.

The Graphics are fantastic for this game.
There are so many good fighters on NGPC. In addition to this game you have KoF round 2, Samurai Shodown 2, and Fatal Fury First Contact. The clicky joystick of the NGPC is so satisfying

SNK vs. Capcom for NeoGeo Pocket Color is legit one of my favorite fighting games ever. I freaking loved this game so much, almost as much as CvS2. I played hours of this game even when just sitting at home, along with SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters Clash. The only TCG I've ever really liked.
This game is the only "Street Fighter" game that I loved playing. It was so simple yet very in depth. NGPC hands down still has the best nub. That alone made playing fighters fun.
And same with Card Fighters Clash. It's the only TCG that I really got into as well. I have both versions but never completed the card library... I should probably get to that haha.

Top 20 fighting game here. It's damn near perfect except for not being able to do vs mode without two systems. Which is a damn shame in this modern world of emulation.
Speaking of emulation, if you run any emulator through retroarch you'll never have to map controls in any of them. Retroarch should be the go-to thing for emulation, at least for now.
yeah, more like Top 10 for me. also Retroarch is pretty convenient, i'll give it that, but for some reason i can't seem to configure PlayStation and Saturn in it (not to mention PCSX2 is more stable for me than Retorarch's take on it).

obviously, even though this game itself was cast from the same mold as KOF R-1 and R-2 (even reusing many of its sprites).
The dialogue in this game is top-notch.

The quality of this game still baffles me to this day. The NG Pocket/Color was an absolute beast. One of the best handhelds ever.

It's basically the "Street Fighter 1" of Capcom VS games. Obviously it exists, but nobody talks about it. Or at least the SNK games anyway, Mahvel's lineage is a bit more confusing to the uninitiated when looking at what came before MVC1.
It's better than the other SNK vs Capcom game where the Street Fighter characters were like into Slim Fast and the infamous Guard Cancel Frontstep. Too bad this game came from a portable console that is very niche compared to the Gameboy Color at the time.
It was for NeoGeo Pocket... had to be an SNK fan to know it even existed...

This is one of the best portable crossover games. Unfortunately the part of the reason Neo Geo pocket died was because Pokemon came out that holiday season. Another great card game on that system was card fighter clash. Working at GameStop that Christmas was a nightmare... lol

Holy shit I just had an epiphany. Super glad Max discovered the alpha counter when he did. I always wondered why the last hit of Kyo's Mu Shiki guard crushed in kof games (and even in R2, the ngpc port of 98) but not in this game. After 10 years I finally realize it would break the ability to perform alpha counters in rush mode off guarding that final hit, as Max accidentally did 🤣
Haven't seen such levels of chibi violence in that last battle for years.
Max at the start: "Gameplay intact. This feels amazing. Wow game you let me just do this? (Referring to a long corner combo on an early game fight mixing from jump ins to crouching to standing to special to super. Perfectly fine flow and does it super early on just fine multiple times.)
Max at the end: "yeah chat the controls kinda suck with this gamepad it fireballs if I press forward and punch. Thats the price I pay."
He never lost the scrublords curse. The crew breaking up nullified maxes sacrifice from bio freaks....he's gotta go finish flyng dragon 64s SD mode to prove himself worthy. 😤
