It would be helpful if handbrake was able to provide an estimate as to what the new file size would be so it wasnt a guessing game as to which presets I need for the video Im trying to compress.
except he did not address using "web optimized at all" or using other options from the preset dropdown menu like going into "web" and all the options available and what would be ideal based on what we need to to do. All he said was "start with fast 1080p" well, I did and I didnt get the file size down to what I needed that's why I started looking on youtube. And all im doing is trying to get a video of 170mb under 100mb and clicking web optimized wasn't enough to the that so I wouldve liked to learn what option is best for me to reduce the file size AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE using the preset options. There was no explanation on that whatsoever. Nothing worse than watching an 8 minute tutorial and learning anything.
Great pro video tutorial Charles and great tips. Changing the file to .MP4 saved me a lot of time struggling to get it right, Also choosing Web Optimised option will reduce the file size tremendously.
Good presentation. The only problem I had(watching it on iPad) was reading and following diagrams on screen, everything seemed tiny. I found pausing video helped.
tip: if you wanna test how fast your video is gonna encode or how big the file size is gonna be especially for longer videos, you can always try splitting the video from "chapters" to "seconds". 30s-60s duration is a good and fast way to check.
Thank you this, helped refresh my memory perfectly. In case anyone is having trouble change the container name from m4v to mp4 right before starting the encoding. Some programs like Discord to not like m4v
great vide. Is there a way to preview what the file size is going to be before rendering? Final Cut Pro tells you what size the video will be before rendering. I am trying to not have to re-compress if the files is still too large. thank you in advance
First off, thanks for going over the basics. Much Appreciated. Do you happen to know if there is anyway to see the size of the File Output before you export it?
Handbrake for Mac has always encoded videos into saved format mp4. The latest version as of this date is Version 1.5.1 and it gives you the option to save in mp4 or mvk
Great tutorial, thank you! I would note that on a Mac, Handbrake requires you to rename the file because it will not overwrite the source file. It also saves the file as an .MP4, so no need to change the filename extension. Using your recommended settings, Handbrake compressed a 612MB video down to 101MB. I'm saving a lot of tutorial videos to my iPad, so this will be extremely helpful.
Another option is just exporting to h265 on Media Encoder which is considerably more efficient than h264. There may be some compatibility issues but I use it all the time for youtube and messenger, works fine on those and I have only had one person who could not open it because she was running a now very old version of Mac OS (support was included in Mac OS from High Sierra onward I believe). Media Encoder also now has the option of hardware acceleration, which drops the quality a tad but exports considerably faster for me.
handbrake is the best thing possible (from what ive seen anyway) for ripping dvds for use with something like plex, though personally i use makemkv to rip the dvds first, then transcode after
nice quick tutorial, one question, when selecting the audio, what should i use to prevent any audio quality loss? example, how do i keep the same DTS-HD MA instead of having it compressed into a stereo mix?
Great video! Thank you! I have however in my videos encountered a real loss in image quality after using handbrake. Every few seconds, the image degrades considerable then continues. Any thoughts on this? Les
Question: I formatted a PPT presentation to MP4, and then compressed in Handbrake. A great job with excellent compression (from 274MB to 74 MB) .... BUT .... Handbrake has trimmed off the edges of my PPT slides on each side ... leaving much text too close to the edge or even slightly cropped. Any advice on how to correct it? Thanks in advance.
yoooo the man right here!! tryna show my friends turning red but its 1.8gb so i gotta compress it. and damn, its only taking like under 20 mins so thats cool
I have been using Handbrake for almost a year plus now. You failed to have explained all the tabs as seen but rather you skipped one of the tabs that I use to edit. Please confirm if that is fine for me.I am referring to the Filters tab. I am to turn all the settings off or just one?
I changed the file extension from .m4v to .mp4 before starting the encoding, but when I try to upload the video as an Instagram reel, half of the video turns into a black screen. Suggestions?

Just curious why you are doing that? Mp4 is meant as a delivery format, not an intermediate one. You would usually want to edit using the assets at their highest quality possible (not compressed).
Daniel Gheorghe I was having issues w the files, even using them as proxies in ppro. Frustrated for weeks. The thing that got me past the extremely choppy timeline preview playback was compressing the files w handbrake. Any other suggestions in which I can use the original files, would be greatly appreciated. What proxy resolution should I be using?
@@mahjidtarantino499 since you already have the Handbrake workflow and since you say your timeline plays fine with MP4 files, I would suggest to import the original assets in Premiere Pro, then compress them to MP4 with Handbrake (you could use Media Encoder as well, it's probably faster - depending on what preset you use in Handbrake).. and then use these compressed versions as proxies.. what format and resolution are the files that give you trouble in Premiere Pro? and what is your computer configuration? i did everything as you said but estimated time to create a new file was over 3 hours. so i changed the encoder speed to superfast and it created a new file in about 15 minutes. only trouble is youtube is still estimating 2 hours to download my video. what should i do now?
Hi. I just recently downloaded this Handbrake app. But my problem after downloaded, There is a notification stating that " You need to install .NET. would you like to download it now?" How to get rid of this? Pls help.
I shot a video in 4k (25p 100) in dimensions 16:9 and in the editing software I turned it to 9:16 so that it fits Tiktok. How do I shrink it to fit WhatsApp, that is, up to 64 mb without harming its quality because it seems to come out "smeared" in WhatsApp? Thanks
Hey. If I transcode my video in Handbrake, do I still need to create proxies to edit in premiere pro or could I use the edits from handbrake directly into Premiere Pro?
Proxies are only needed for raw files(captured in higher bit depth and rate). Proxies are non-destructive, it lets you edit in lower quality for smooth playback, but grade and export in higher quality. So, it's always suggested to edit and export in the best quality possible, if your video and color quality matters to you. Then, once rendered, compress them using handbrake for storage purpose, other than that for RUclips, there's already a preset in premiere and encoder called RUclips with preferred frame, which works absolutely fine. I'll suggest to compress only if you're uploading on instagram or other social media where smaller size is better.
MKV is a better format all around. MP4 is antiquated, it's like using an outhouse. Especially if your movies have subtitles or have multiple languages. You can add all the other languages plus any commentary track and soft subtitles with MKV.
It would be helpful if handbrake was able to provide an estimate as to what the new file size would be so it wasnt a guessing game as to which presets I need for the video Im trying to compress.

Worrrrd!
Ayyy thats a shout
But it's all good. At the end of the day what we hope for is a smaller file size

The .m4v extension was actually causing me issues in uploading the Instagram reels. Thanks to you, I just renamed it to mp4 and it works now
