Hell, I'd say that was the only reason he picked Rooster. Hangman was the most skilled pilot, we never really see the other single-seater pilots, and Rooster was way too timid.
I thought Hangman was flying an F-35 in that final scene. It's been speculated that Mav and Rooster were on the ground for some time before stealing the F-14, so they may have thought the mission was over and gotten everyone out of their planes, only for Rooster to activate his tracker. At that moment, Cyclone probably told Hangman to get into an F-35 and launch in case the two needed backup. As for why no other planes were launched, I'm pretty sure someone else in this comment section has mentioned it, but it takes a lot to get one of those planes in the air, so you don't want to send more than you need, and Maverick is a very capable pilot, as we clearly saw. Cyclone knew only Maverick was crazy enough to try and steal an enemy F-14, so when a member of his crew described the incoming plane, he knew instantly it was Maverick and figured he didn't need to send more than one plane.
And the best thing is: all of the flying maneuvers shown are actually realistic and doable, there’s a ton of reviews on RUclips by actual Navy/Air Force pilots who all confirmed it. Some of Maverick’s maneuvers are not advisable and need an exceptionally skilled pilot to not end in disaster but hey, Maverick 😅😎

Bit of a weird formation......The purpose of the two-team assist is that while Phoenix flies the plane Bob focuses completely on lazing the target for Maverick as the bombs use the lazer-eye to achieve pinpoint accuracy - though worst case scenario [as seen with Rooster] is that the gunner has to take the shot "from the hip" based solely on his targeting system. What Rooster did there isn't impossible per se, but IRL it would take an enormous amount of skill and luck. It's not something you want to leave to chance ala Maverick's test run [which, given the mission parameters, trying to both fly solo and laze the target would be if not impossible than so improbable as to be effectively impossible] which is why the gunner relies on the second plane/lazer-eye. There's an official term for what they did but I can't think of it immediately. Any Naval Aviators, please correct me if I'm wrong. Also, I don't think the plane can actually carry both the bombs and the lazer-eye. But I'm not sure on that.

It's explained near the beginning when Maverick is briefed on the mission before he starts training. The enemy has extensive radar jamming equipment that would render the F-35 unsuitable. It's explicitly mentioned in the briefing scene.
Because with F-35s, you wouldn't have a dramatic scene of a suicide mission. You'd just have an air-to-ground strike from high altitude. And thus, you wouldn't have a movie. Also, with F-18 two-seaters, you can have Mav appear to be flying the jet when in reality, an actual F-18 pilot is flying it. F-35s are single seaters. As for the reason given in the movie - that anti-jamming capabilities would nullify the F-35, the F-35 also has the ability employ laser-guided munitions, like the F-18.
The only thing I don't like about the film are the characters of the pilots...Phoenix.. We're so good, who can teach us anything else? Hangman is called that because he always lets everyone down.. Hmmm? He would never have become a fighter pilot. Fighter pilots must certainly have a high level of self-confidence, but they are still absolute team players. And a few other little things I don't like... So 8 points from 10.
They’re Top Gun graduates, of course they’re going to think of themselves as the best and that they know everything. But they were proven way wrong on the first day of the mission training. I really liked that about the film. And I liked Phoenix. I liked her sass.
@@MyBlackandRedCZ They are top gun graduates, and the one percent. Now that too is wrong and does not correspond to reality. In fact, every US Navy pilot goes to and graduates from Top Gun.
@@alexandertheissl808 sorry but not every naval aviator goes to Top Gun. This is misinformation. Top Gun, or the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program as it's called nowadays, only accepts the top one percent aviators in the navy into the program. Once they graduate, they then go back to their individual units where they act as surrogate instructors to the other aviators in their squadron.
It's fair for them to brag since they are a recent TOPGUN Graduates They didn't recruit Prodigal newbies into the team if you had watched the movie again The best of the best of all Naval Aviators That is until Maverick whoop their asses A TOPGUN graduates that won 2nd place back in the 80s and haven't flown F-18 for some years compared to them
The reason why Phoenix said that is because she is a Top Gun graduate like everyone else who was called back to train for the mission. She knew she and the others were the best of the best and didn’t know why they were called back in the place. Also, the reason why everyone in the movie calls Glen Powell’s character Hangman was not because he let everyone down, but he would always leave his wingman in the dust and do everything on his own. He’s a skilled and aggressive fighter pilot, but he also competitive, as a lot real life Top Gun pilots are as well.

1 seat, where is the actor gonna go? Besides, I doubt they would let them use F-35s. It also looks like a pregnant F-22.
What's up with oriental subtitles?

He looks old now
The only thing I don't like about the film are the characters of the pilots...Phoenix..
It's fair for them to brag since they are a recent TOPGUN Graduates
They didn't recruit Prodigal newbies into the team if you had watched the movie again
The best of the best of all Naval Aviators
That is until Maverick whoop their asses
A TOPGUN graduates that won 2nd place back in the 80s and haven't flown F-18 for some years compared to them
The reason why Phoenix said that is because she is a Top Gun graduate like everyone else who was called back to train for the mission.
We need more movies like this instead of the woke bs!
Loved the movie
did Maverick steal his girlfriends? whats wrong with them
There's a whole subplot about what happened between them. Watch the damn movie
He's Gooses kid
They're both gay.
wow 😆 why are you here? Lol
Such a boring movie. Top gun part 1 was million times better!!! Such a disappointment, too much tc ego involved. Same old story with his movies. Shortmans disease.
