Ronnie was a real gentleman. He took time to speak with me and hang out before one of his shows in New Britain, CT back in the '80's. No ego, just a regular guy....but we all know he was a lot more than that. Thank you for sharing Doug.
Can't tell you how many times I heard stories just like that. One such story involved a kid who got stranded at a concert venue & might not have been able to get inside either. So Ronnie's bus is getting ready to head out and long story short he brought the kid to the closest bus station in his tour bus (probably paid for his ticket too).
Do your demons, do they ever let you go? When you've tried, do they hide, deep inside Is it someone that you know? You're just a picture, you're an image caught in time We're a lie, you and I We're words without a rhyme Ronnie James Dio, R.I.P.
According to Wendy Dio, this song is about Ritchie Blackmore. Also, she said from heaven and hell, "The world is full of kings and queens. Who blind-your-eyes and steals your dreams it's heaven and hell." Also, about Ritchie Blackmore. Ritchie pissed him off badly.
I have been a RJD fan ever since I heard him on "Love is All" and the first Rainbow album. I have heard and seen Dio live twice, in 1984 at the Pinkpop festival and in 2000 at a show from the Magica tour. Just an awesome singer and performer, not to forget songwriter. Had the pleasure of meeting Ronnie in person, before the Magica show in 2000 and remember him as a polite and friendly person. Treasured memories.
I'm the same. 'Love is All' was the first time I heard Ronnie way back in 1974 and have been a huge fan every since. I saw him live 4 times. Holydiver, Last in Line, Sacred Heart and Killing the Dragon tours.
Dio is my favourite singer of all time, I listen to him every evening, thanks for playing his music again your channel is great, I'm a Sci Fi fan and have a channel off my own his music has a strange meaning for me thanks again.
Ronnie's early career: 1958-1960: Ronnie and the Red Caps 1961-1967: Ronnie Dio and the Prophets 1968-1971: Electric Elves 1972-1974: Elf There are recordings available on RUclips as far back as 1958, though the earliest available vocal by Ronnie is from 1960 (the 1958 recording is an instrumental where he plays lead trumpet).
Love that raw energy throughout the song - Ronnie´s vocals and Vinnie´s drumplaying. So, to the point here! Vivian is to me unique as a guitarplayer - love his beautiful style of playing!😍And Mr. Bain is always there - RIP.
He may have been short in stature, but the man was a true giant among men. Incredibly talented singer songwriter and just an amazing human. He is greatly missed.
Last in line has Vivian Campbell playing what is considered one of the best metal guitar leads. The lyrics hit you hard and of course, Dio hits you harder.
I was lucky enough to get to see both his Holy Diver and Last in Line tours. What an epic voice, what epic shows. Without doubt one of the greatest metal voices ever.
I love the song "Lock up the wolves". There he put them all together an made them to his own. Elf, Rainbow, Sabbath and other musicians he had worked with over the years. Great song ! 🤘😊🎶
I was a young teenager in the late 80s, I missed out on most of the 80s and 70s, but man we had so many amazing talents: Bruce Dickinson, Rob Halford, Geoff Tate, and my personal fave , metal singer, band( Dio!❤❤❤❤❤❤ Thanks so much, 👍 and keep the metal reactions coming!
Ronnie actually hated this song initially. He said he was about to take scissors and cut the tape - he said that was because it sounds too pop-like. He then went on to say something along the lines of "Thank you to those who convinced me to keep it, hahaha."
Certainly not the most complex song, but really powerful, as usual. His lyrics are always excellent, and, of course, his vocals are almost untouchable. There were actually a number of bands before Rainbow, including The Vegas Kings, Ronnie and the Rumblers, Ronnie and the Redcaps (e.g.: An Angel is Missing), Ronnie and the Prophets (e.g.: Walking in Different Circles) - which are all sort a mix of swing/crooner/early rock/whatever you want to call them, and then the The Electric Elves > Elf. You should really check out something by Elf, in which his style became much more Blues and heavier than previously, like “Wonderworld”.
What an interesting coincidence this was! I was watching a video of Dio singing live and I got recommended your first JoJo reaction video, then I went to check your channel and found out that you've uploaded this even more recently haha. I love Dio! And I got to discover him through JoJo thanks for the first villain being named "Dio" after him. Thanks for this video! I hope you had a great Christmas and New Year
Dio is the one who imposed the hand in the shape of horns as a mark of metal... since it was common to see his Italian grandmother chase away bad vibes with that typical Italian gesture 🤘
practically all of 80's heavy metal uses these same 3 chords over and over again. they're the quintessential metal progression. you play these 3 powerchords with distortion and it's enough to make anyone go "hell yeah".
Doug, please check out The Warning, three sisters from Mexico, playing old-school Rock in the modern era. They have 3 albums and 2 EPs out, and the oldest sister is only 23. They've opened for GnR, Foo Fighters, Muse, etc. I recommend Dust to Dust Live at Teatro Metropolitan CDMX (Ciudad Mexico). Any of their live stuff just Rocks! The Warning Army will flood your channel.
I saw Dio perform live 6 times, and met him once. He always took the time to make sure everyone at his shows got a great experience. He was such an inspiration not just as a musician, but also as a human being.
I'am not old enough to have heard Ronnie with Rainbow, but with Sabbath. I think I might have felt more informed about who he was and his sound had I heard "Stargazer" and "Mistreated".
I have seen a rainbow in the dark. I was heading south out of Knoxville, Tn, just before sunrise. There was a drizzling rain falling, the mountains were to the east, and a slight glow of sunlight could be seen touching the mountain tops. I looked to the west and an incredibly bright rainbow was against the pitch black sky. I have never seen colors so vivid and bold. Other drivers were pulling to the side of the road and we all kind of sat there completely mind blown, untill the sun crested the mountains behind us and faded out the rainbow. This song always takes me back to that Tennessee roadside and the vision that i was blessed to see that morning.
I noticed how you thought the keyboard melody in the intro was "interesting". Well.... There's an "interesting" story to how it came about. Ronnie's bassist Jimmy Bain (who played with Ronnie in Rainbow and had a reputation for being buzzed but completely functional at the same time) was in the studio with the band recording the song and they were toying with ideas for the intro. So they're trying this, trying that and Jimmy walks up to the keyboard with a Jack and coke in one hand, & a cigarette dangling from his lip & starts playing the simple melody you hear on the recording and Ronnie goes "that's it"!....and that's how it came about. If you watch this interview with the members of Last in line (a band that features the former members of Ronnie's band with a different singer) you'll hear them recall the moment starting at the 4:15 mark. Enjoy 👊😎🎸 ruclips.net/video/Wl8OvjtBmds/видео.htmlsi=pwaC-4h5w06B2iOQ
Other Dio tracks to consider: "Stargazer" (Rainbow) "Sign of the Southern Cross" (Black Sabbath) "Heaven and Hell" (Black Sabbath) "Holy Diver" (Dio) "Man on the Silver Mountain" (Rainbow) "Temple of the King" (Rainbow)
Two underrated songs no one seem to know about are Black Sabbath's "Over and Over" and from the Holy Diver album "Caught in the middle". The vocals of these two gems is angelic.
There was a Xmas record releashed a few years back named metal Xmas, it features a lot of metal/rock artists like Dio, Lemy, Allice Cooper and others covering some classic christmass songs, you might want to give it a spin
This was my first Dio song. It appeared on a Canadian music compilation called Masters Of Metal Volume I, back in 1983 or 1984 (which was followed by a Volume II the following year). That compilation marks the my first metal album and delving into the metal genre. Never looked back, except to reflect and reminisce.
Just like Iron Maiden uses to do...and that's one of the reasons for being so good! 😅 Whoever listened carefully to Maiden's songs know how good they are, no matter how many chords were used to compose them! And both Dio and Iron Maiden mean excellence in heavy metal, in rock! I've been Dio's fan for decades - for me, the greatest heavy metal singer ever, one of the greatest frontmen in rock'n roll history! And, yes, you're right, I've noticed you've reacted to Dio's songs only a few times; and that's why I'm gonna help you by suggesting some of his hits for you to react to: "Don't talk to strangers"; "Sacred heart"; "Like the beat of a heart"; "The last in line" (official music video); and the beautiful but underrated "All the fools sailed away" (official music video) - I don't know why people don't use to react to this one. Great songs that become even greater when they're sung by Dio. R.I.P., Ronnie!
It is worth noting you've also done Stargazer and Gates of Babylon when Dio was with Rainbow and Heaven and Hell and Sign of the Southern Cross when Dio was with Black Sabbath. But I'll never say no to more Dio (the band, or Ronnie James Dio himself). You could even check out some of his time with Elf, the band he was in before Rainbow, though it was more Blues-y Rock than anything else.
Stargazer with Rainbow, Children of the Sea with Black Sabbath and Rainbow in the Dark. Those three songs are and will always ever be the first three songs you should play for someone who doesn't know RJD. The man was epic, unforgettable and above all else, a heavy metal Icon that will never be duplicated. I've always been a Sabbath fan and when he joined them, it was the pinnacle of Heavy Metal music, imo. RIP Ronnie. You've earned it, my friend.
If this was something that bothered me on any level I'd be too embarrassed to express it, even anonymously. What, he didn't react in a way that caters to your emotional attachment in a song that's multiple decades old?
Every musician on Holy Diver and the follow-up album Last In Line plays perfectly (I saw them on that tour, back in the 80's!). My favourite one of theirs is Egypt (The Chains Are On).
Such a POWERFUL singer!! Fantastic song! If this doesn't get you going,,CHECK YOUR PULSE, YOU'RE PROBABLY DEAD! way to go DOUG! WELL DONE. LOVE YOUR CHANNEL. KEEP THE "RUSH" GOING.
It was 1 year ago that you reacted to Heaven and Hell and I am hoping you might consider reacting to a band that just did a cover of it. The band is Liliac pronounced "Lilly-Ack". It is 5 siblings ages 15-24. They have 3 original albums but started by doing cover songs 8 years ago. They occasionally add a new covers and their tribute to the song Heaven and Hell, as well as Dio is excellent in my opinion. Dio is Liliac's singer's idol and she is friends with Vinnie Appice. Dio's widow Wendy ask Liliac to perform a cancer fund tribute of The Last In Line. Vinnie gave them an un-released version to perform. I don't think you can go wrong by reacting to any of their music. Their cover of Heaven and hell is the newest video other than Carol of the Bells. I wasn't sure how to request a reaction so I posted here.
Nice video Doug! You should come back to Megadeth, since they're one of the seminal bands where you still haven't really seen all they have to offer. I would recommend "Hangar 18" or "Tornado of Souls"
Was listening to We Rock before this. Rhythm section was tight. Vinnie Appice was locked in, with some great drum fills. Rainbow in the Dark teaches how to write without being complicated. Another link to Iron Maiden was going beyond standard blues licks in the riff writing. By design or accident, you can hear the Aeolian mode (a) and Phrygian (e), which gives it a darker sound.
Please do DIO - As Long As It's Not About Love. A lesser known song from the Magica album, but that together with Rainbow In The Dark are my 2 favorite songs from him. And he's my favorite vocalist of all time. By far.
Doug...have you ever thought about writing a book about how getting yourself into heavy rock music have changed your perspectives and concepts about the whole thing??? You could change people's minds in the classical music world
I once saw a rainbow in the dark while driving home late one night. It was about 3 am. It was a full moon and it ha just stopped raining. Man, I'll never forget it!
Ronnie did some great stuff with Rainbow as well. Gates of Babylon, Stargazer, Kill the King, or Man on the Silver Mountain are a few you should check out. And yeah I agree with the comments about how you missed a great guitar solo.
This song has been appropriated by a segment of the LGBTQ+ community over the years to share their collective pain of being "closeted" by society. So have other groups of "outcasts" over the years. Its an anthem of pain, self reflection and hope. I adore it.
@garnethumelsine5358 - Dio was never in Deep Purple, although Ronnie’s band Elf was their opening act and Purple bassist, Roger Glover and Drummer, Ian Paice, were key in getting Elf signed, with Glover producing them. Ronnie sang three songs on Glover’s Butterfly Ball record n 1974 and some 25 years later, appeared at a show with Deep Purple and the London Symphony Orchestra to sing a couple of them. Of course, Dio became a founding member of Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow in ‘75, when he first came to prominence as an international star.
The metaphor is also much more simple: He had been in Rainbow, & then in Black Sabbath… he had become a literal (member of) rainbow in the dark (of Sabbath), & then emerged on his own
There is no way this is your first time hearing this. 1983 was a great year in metal. Quiet Riot had the 1st number 1 metal ever. Hey dude, why would you even play that girly keyboard during the epic solo?
The great Ronnie James Dio! You need to check out Frank Marino and Mohegan’s Rush. Their dong “Dragon Fly” is really groovy. Also some KingsX would be nice. Their song “summer land, It’s Love and Black Flag are great.
The genius of the composition of this song is that the whole song is only made up of two guitarriffs, the chorus is just adding the keyboards onto the verse riff. Although it is dirt simple it is a great catchy song and his biggest hit that probably made his career under his own name to a large extent.
Ronnie was a real gentleman. He took time to speak with me and hang out before one of his shows in New Britain, CT back in the '80's. No ego, just a regular guy....but we all know he was a lot more than that. Thank you for sharing Doug.
Was that at The Sting?
Every story I hear about Ronnie its always like this. He was very humble, and all around a good dude
I have heard good things about ROnnie , my buddy him a couple of times always remembered his name.
The Last in Line is a gem as well.
Yes! I'm friends with them. Great guys.
Do your demons, do they ever let you go?
When you've tried, do they hide, deep inside
Is it someone that you know?
You're just a picture, you're an image caught in time
We're a lie, you and I
We're words without a rhyme
Ronnie James Dio, R.I.P.
Look Out ‼️

Dio: little man with the biggest voice!
The solo in this song is one of my favorite of all time. Incredible!!!!

"Take it Vivian!" and then proceeds to ignore one of the best solos ever!
Ronnie's early career:
1958-1960: Ronnie and the Red Caps
1961-1967: Ronnie Dio and the Prophets
1968-1971: Electric Elves
1972-1974: Elf

Arrghh! Chatting over a Vivian Campbell guitar solo.
Yep, that got a raised eyebrow from me as well. Especially *this* solo.
Cmon in his channel he does this everytime. If you didnt like stop the vídeo and get out.
I was lucky enough to get to see both his Holy Diver and Last in Line tours. What an epic voice, what epic shows. Without doubt one of the greatest metal voices ever.
Bad timing for the keyboard on this one 😅 Awesome video!
I love the song "Lock up the wolves". There he put them all together an made them to his own. Elf, Rainbow, Sabbath and other musicians he had worked with over the years.
Great song ! 🤘😊🎶
What a great singer he was and such a distinct sound. Going to listen the album again now....
Dude, you just played over one of the most epic metal solos ever.

40 years ago?!!!! Dang! I got old!!!!! I gotta tell you though, seeing Dio in the San Antonio Arena back in the day was amazing!
Ronnie actually hated this song initially. He said he was about to take scissors and cut the tape - he said that was because it sounds too pop-like. He then went on to say something along the lines of "Thank you to those who convinced me to keep it, hahaha."
Doug missed one of the greatest guitar solos of all time. 😂
I mean he's not a guitar guy, his usual comments on solos are just "wooahhs" he can't really go in depth on techniques when he doesn't know them.
@@Ed7-zz4jk its not that serious
Yes, go back, play the solo…..and repeat, and repeat
He literally played along with it, what the hell are you all on about? What you want him to just be agape like a damn concert pleb?
Sadly he did. Tragic
Should do Egypt and All the Fools Sailed Away, both épic Dio tracks

The drums on this are very, very good. Vinny Appice.

this video was actually uploaded on my birthday. great gift.
Vivian's solo is one of the best metal solos ever!
💯 ‼️ and he played his keyboard over it 😒
Dio is the one who imposed the hand in the shape of horns as a mark of metal... since it was common to see his Italian grandmother chase away bad vibes with that typical Italian gesture 🤘
malocchio
Yeah I remember him telling that lol 🤘
Ee
And the most important part of that story is the fact that Gene Simmons DID NOT invent the metal horns.
Gene Simmons doesn’t agree 😀😀
I love it when you play along :-)
Dio is awesome ❤ I would love to hear what you have to say about "Losing my insanity" song of his, it's really quite interesting!
I mean, there are absolutely 0 songs from RJD that don't fascinate me.
His sound is really something else. Nothing can be compared to that uniqueness.
@@pdcmoreira I agree, I love all his songs, no matter what band or era!
One best singers of all time and was Warner brothers best singer and the group’s he was in Black Sabbath and rainbow when I saw them all in concert
What a great reaction, for a superb muscian.long live rock n roll😊
practically all of 80's heavy metal uses these same 3 chords over and over again. they're the quintessential metal progression. you play these 3 powerchords with distortion and it's enough to make anyone go "hell yeah".

The Dio Documentary “Dreamers Never Die” is a great one to check out!
2:42 "and there's his voice" no more need to be said of Ronnie. He had the perfect rock voice. No one else came close
Loved it! Happy Holidays to you 🤘
Other Dio tracks to consider:

"Sign of the Southern Cross" (Black Sabbath)
"Heaven and Hell" (Black Sabbath)
"Holy Diver" (Dio)
"Man on the Silver Mountain" (Rainbow)
"Temple of the King" (Rainbow)

Unfortunately while you just plunked out the chords on your keyboard you missed one of the greatest ever guitar solos in heavy metal.
Absolutely love Doug but OMG yes! He has to do a redemption and relisten to that masterpiece again!!

Check Dio's Christmas classic: God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Underrated lead guitarist. I’m sure he’s made great $ in Def Leppard, but have to think he’s been underutilized and overlooked in that band
Please do DIO - As Long As It's Not About Love.
A lesser known song from the Magica album, but that together with Rainbow In The Dark are my 2 favorite songs from him.
And he's my favorite vocalist of all time. By far.
Playing piano during the guitar solo eh?
Doug...have you ever thought about writing a book about how getting yourself into heavy rock music have changed your perspectives and concepts about the whole thing??? You could change people's minds in the classical music world
Dio RockZ
I once saw a rainbow in the dark while driving home late one night. It was about 3 am. It was a full moon and it ha just stopped raining. Man, I'll never forget it!
it was RJD
Ronnie did some great stuff with Rainbow as well. Gates of Babylon, Stargazer, Kill the King, or Man on the Silver Mountain are a few you should check out.
And yeah I agree with the comments about how you missed a great guitar solo.
Don't look now, Doug, but behind you there's a rainbow in the dark (side of the moon)... well, the colors at least.
A very special Dio song is Lock up the wolves.
Has he done "Don't Talk to Strangers" yet? Another must off this album.
This song has been appropriated by a segment of the LGBTQ+ community over the years to share their collective pain of being "closeted" by society. So have other groups of "outcasts" over the years. Its an anthem of pain, self reflection and hope. I adore it.
As a gay person i dread the thought of the LGBTQIA+ "community" appropriating anything by Dio.
@@linkvagar2336 Guess prejudice is a two way street to some. Peace be with you anyways.
Rest in power my favorite singer
There's no mistaking that voice, from Deep Purple to Rainbow, to Black Sabbath, it fit :-)
Dam,man,dio,is,1,in,the,world
Doug you really need to get into the Butterfly ball. also the chase by queensryche, which Ronnie does a great cameo in.
The metaphor is also much more simple:
He had been in Rainbow, & then in Black Sabbath… he had become a literal (member of) rainbow in the dark (of Sabbath), & then emerged on his own
There is no way this is your first time hearing this. 1983 was a great year in metal. Quiet Riot had the 1st number 1 metal ever. Hey dude, why would you even play that girly keyboard during the epic solo?
Playing piano over Viv nearly killed me... Otherwise rock on good sir
The great Ronnie James Dio! You need to check out Frank Marino and Mohegan’s Rush. Their dong “Dragon Fly” is really groovy. Also some KingsX would be nice. Their song “summer land, It’s Love and Black Flag are great.
I listened to this after years. First thought: WHY THE HELL HAVE I NOT DOWNLOADED THIS??!!
Dio was magic
🤘🏳🌈🌈 Go Metal !!! Seen Dio in concert 🎸🥁🔊🎤🎙 in 2005 and he rocked 🪨🪨 the house !!! 🏠🏛🏢
never go wrong with Dio his stuff he did with ronnie and the red caps was amazing and it's do-wop music
The genius of the composition of this song is that the whole song is only made up of two guitarriffs, the chorus is just adding the keyboards onto the verse riff. Although it is dirt simple it is a great catchy song and his biggest hit that probably made his career under his own name to a large extent.
love that slogan on the sweater
Dio has an incredible voice.
I think Last in Line is his hit with the most impressive e vocals. That, or Neon Knights, but he technically did that with Black Sabbath.
Great ballad. Unique voice.
