World's Cutest Van Ride Along. 1970 Subaru 360 Braves the Freeway!

  • This is my 1970 Subaru 360 Van. Some call it a Subaru Bus. Later years were called Sambar. This is a Japanese "Kei" class vehicle. These were imported into the USA by Malcom Bricklin in the late 1960's. It's about a foot longer than a Smart ForTwo (just under 10 ft). It weighs 1100 lbs. These were designed as work vans and trucks in Japan and have a surprising payload capacity of 800 lbs. Power comes from a 2-stroke, 2-cylinder 360cc engine. Oil and gas go in separate tanks and mix automatically. Top speed on level ground is about 60 mph. In this video I brave the freeway (uphill even!) and merge going about 40 mph. I only get to about 55 mph on this trip do to the gradient. Title of "world's cutest van" has been confirmed by my girlfriend and is current. Please excuse my messy garage! I wanted to capture the engine starting and my exit routine. If you're wondering where to get a GoPro mount like in this video message me and I'll tell you how to build your own. Background music is Dust Brothers, Mixmaster Mike and the last one is a song I made with a Roland MC-505 and Boss SP-202.

I am a Japanese. I am pleased to see the movie of Subaru 360 van which I have not seen even in Japan. The car was used by my grandfather at work. Thank you for posting a video that reminded me of my fond memories with my grandfather.

Good engine sound! You can see "Kei mini van"(They are 660cc or 550cc) a lot in Japan. It was 360cc in olden times. This Subaru is an ancestor of those. Awesome!

How can we be sure that the gopro camera and its boom weren't too much added weight? The Subaru could have tipped over. :o)

Cute! I had 2 Subaru 360 sedans when I was younger, started to restore them, but this guy a friend of mine knew wanted to buy both--I didn't have the time to restore them anyway, and he had BOTH running great in a week! I love anything 2 stroke, and these are no excption! BTW--the best bike I ever owned was a '74 Suzuki GT-550! That little triple would just SING--and fly too! Fast as a 1992 Kawie ZX-6 easily! Nice little bike!

I have owned several Subaru 360's sedans and cans, I drove them all over San Diego freeways and up in Orange county. I drove one van 35 miles each way to work and it always did great. Drove a sedan from San Diego to Portland Oregon and it did great, a fun trip. I bought a new sedan in 1970 and I was hooked. These are great.

Cute. Those 360 engines are neat units. About 20yrs ago I worked in a motorcycle shop, a customer bought in a homemade single-seater gokart that was powered with this same engine. Man it could fly! I've never seen the van model before, but there's still one person in my town (in New Zealand) that drives the tiny 2-door car model. Tiny rare cars like this are a real treat to see.

Chris have you ever heard of the Malibu Grand Prix? If not, basically it was a franchise of go-kart tracks mainly on the west coast. It was founded by Malcom Bricklin. Funny thing is the first cars used were Suburu 360 vans with the van bodies removed and fiberglass racecar bodies attached. They were called Fastrack and Fastrack II and are very rare today! I wonder if that customer had an actual Fastrack?

I really enjoyed your video. I loved the old VW buses and had 3 and I saw one of these Subaru's at a lot....it was 1970 +/- and went to check it out. Took my brother in law with me and I remember us both getting in the car at the same time and when we shut the doors...our shoulders bumped. I don't know why I didn't get it then but I'd get it in a second now. Anyway... nifty bus!
