Being more of a conventional bass guy, fishing 20Ib test in pads and heavy veggies seems ridiculous, of course it’s not when fly fishing, but we fish 60-80Ib test braid in the slop with frogs and punching rigs...
Well, theoretically you could use a braid for bass leaders, but I’m not sure if they’d cast differently since I never use them. As I mostly use 0.013”-0.015” tippet for top water bass fishing, it would equate to about 40-60 lb braid. For example, you could use: 24” of 150 lb braid (or 0.022”) 21” of 100 lb braid (or 0.018”) 20” of 80 lb braid (or 0.017”) 19” of 60 lb braid (or 0.015”). However, I have never tried this or ever heard of someone doing this. But it would work in theory. I’m just not sure how it would cast.
If you have never caught a Smally on the fly , your missing some impressive Heart Beats, lol. Beaver lake , Vancouver Island . Try it you'll like it ! Think black Wooly Buggers oh ya !
I love the breakdown of bass behavior throughout the year in this video. Also, the information in regards how to fish for bass at particular times of the year is extremely helpful. Great work and thanks!
This is what I do! Or should I say try to do! Self taught, in all facets, I'm so happy to have found this! Gonna make my life so much more richer, thank you, I subscribed!!!!!
If my economics classes at college would have presented the information with beautiful scenery as you have in this video, I might have enjoyed the class better. I'm new to fly fishing however I have been bass fishing for almost all my life and to get the best results for your poppers I would suggest early in the morning right before sun up or during sun up and right before the sun goes down and all the way through the night. Not sure why they go after top waters so aggressive during that time but That's when I catch the majority of my bass on a topwater. Great video
"...pay attention to the conventional fisherman." Very true, most of the bass I've caught on the fly rod was by applying what I've learned as a conventional fisherman. Can't wait to target bass soon, especially on poppers :). Lot's of awesome information on this video, great job guys! Keep it up! Tight Lines!
To conclude, Use intermediate sinking line. Keep the fly under 1-2 feet under the water for any imitation flies you will have success most times throughout the season. Try dry flies early in the morning or just before Sunset. Good Luck.
What a badass, casting into the middle of the pads like that. LOL I'd never even try it, just the thought of having to wade through all those lily pads to go retrieve my spun deer hair something or other that took me hours to tie gives me the creeps. Having a boat might change my mind but wading through chest deep lily pads is like a total nightmare for me... Great video at any rate as with all of Tom's videos.
Reminds me way back when fly fishing for 8-10” smallmouth using a tiny Heddon Jitterbug. In the shallow water they’d attack it like a school of piranha. Gosh that was fun!
How close you you trim the extra tag ends on your homemade leaders? I cut it pretty close by my flies sometimes get caught in a cast on the little tag end nubs.
yup - fly rod and bass in texas challenging but worth it - lots of fun when I can't get to trout.....and nice change from bait cast rod and reel - but for sure - I am using my mat rod and 80lb braid in heavy texas mats and reeds - i love my fly gear too much to risk lossing plus I do yet know how to flip with a fly rod.. :). maybe thats the tenkara method..... :). nice video lots of great information
Best all-around bass rod is either a seven or eight weight. You can cast big poppers or mice patterns in wind and also cast heavy streamers or crayfish patterns on sinking lines. Hope that helps
Wonderful and very informative! For anyone wishing to go further in depth for Smallies they should check out Tim Holschlag. For a really deep dive into the subject - find a copy of Book of The Black Bass. Most good copies will be reprints out of the seventies. But a close to or an original copy could be a nice gift for the fly fishing Bronzeback hunter.
for everyone curious since this is a northerner it doesn't get 90 degrees, summer time in the south if you are fishing middle of the day they will be DEEP to get away from the heat
Can a 9’-8wt be used for small &. large mouth bass, blue Gill, crappie, and walleye? We have a lot of these species in our area so looking for a rod reel setup to hit all these species and not have to buy multiple rod/reel setups. Thanks
Michael, for getting started that rod is fine for bass and other species. If you have the option of what rod size, you might want to consider a six weight but if not, then certainly the 8 weight is fine. Have fun!
Great information! I finally started going for some largemouth after watching the first video. Keen to try some of these techniques out in the next couple of days.
I love it I just subscribed you guys you’re fantastic I love to watch your techniques can you do something about helping me with the bluegills it’s been a while I had my heart rebuilt after having a stroke it’s been about three or four years since I’ve been on the water seems like things are a little different now than what they used to be if you got any suggestions I love my spiders I love being on the surface thanks for your help and for all that you do to promote this fantastic sport.
Tom, can you do a video on setting the hook for bass. It seems to be a bit different than trout. The camera isn't catching you set the hook and when to lift the rod. Thank you, Jade
Nicely done. Good coverage. A tad light in the Fall LM section. But, hey, the bass fishing world is a large one. It'll keep us busy year round. All the best. Paul
generally you should. a pike fly that is seven inches long won't cast well on a 4 weight, but a small 2-3 inch streamer will. check with you local fly shop or use this guide to help you: www.orvis.com/fly-rods
Sam, thanks for letting us know this. RUclips started a new mid-video roll insertion and we don't know where or how much they are putting in. We will see what we can do to fix it. Again, thanks for letting us know
Outstanding footage and excellent information. Tom's (and Pete's) presentation of information is always clear and concise. Thank you for sharing this excellent and very informative video.
I primarily fly fish for LMB, when getting a rod outfit it's not as much about the size of the fish you're targeting but the size of the fly you want to throw. If you want to throw bigger flies (which I would for LMB) I would get a heavier rod 8-10 wt, I can send you a chart on how the fly size compares to the rod and line weight
Thank you for all that you guys have done and continue to do for the art of fly fishing!!! It absolutely saved my life, it found me after a really rough patch in my 20’s and I am a completely different man of 33 years thanks to your efforts. Tom, your podcasts are a blessing in my life and these videos, along with your books, have changed my life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Love that shirt.
I know right
These videos are like attending Fly Fishing University! Thank you.

Good Luck.
River smallmouth have many similar habits of river trout.
Never caught a bass on the fly, this year they are going down. I should probably move away from my small trout stream first

Tom R is a genuinely nice, down to earth, pleasantly humble guy. He's the real deal. Keep up the fine work, TNFF folks.
This is simply the best! Everyone involved should be proud of this masterpiece! Tom is the man!
Thanks Philip, will pass this onto everyone. You will love the next video on Euro Nymphing!
No such thing as "advanced" Flyfishing for Bass..Tie on decent sized Steamer, voila.
Many forget that salamander looking baits will trigger bass too . Thanks for videos !!!!!!!!!
“Public land owner” shirt 👍👍👍
Excellent video. Thank you for all of the useful tips and tricks to fly fishing for bass during different seasons.
Reminds me way back when fly fishing for 8-10” smallmouth using a tiny Heddon Jitterbug. In the shallow water they’d attack it like a school of piranha. Gosh that was fun!
Farmer Bob a gurgler has produced the same for me! It’s so much fun
I thought Arbogast made the jitterbug. I always liked yhe 5/8 oz or yhe Muskey sized for night fishing
How close you you trim the extra tag ends on your homemade leaders? I cut it pretty close by my flies sometimes get caught in a cast on the little tag end nubs.
It's all about personal choice. Usually we like to leave a little bit of a tag in case there is some slippage in the knot when fighting a fish
It seems the water that holds bass in south texas is so different, we have drought conditions more so than anywhere else it seems
yup - fly rod and bass in texas challenging but worth it - lots of fun when I can't get to trout.....and nice change from bait cast rod and reel - but for sure - I am using my mat rod and 80lb braid in heavy texas mats and reeds - i love my fly gear too much to risk lossing plus I do yet know how to flip with a fly rod.. :). maybe thats the tenkara method..... :). nice video lots of great information
What weighted rod you recommend for bass fishing ?
Best all-around bass rod is either a seven or eight weight. You can cast big poppers or mice patterns in wind and also cast heavy streamers or crayfish patterns on sinking lines. Hope that helps
Drinking oscar blues from a mix pack and the algorithm picks this. Time to smash the phone and go fishing.
This video is EXACTLY what I needed here in Kansas!!!!!!
Covered all aspects mostly small mouth river fishing good information
Super Video 👍😉🤙

This was TERRIFIC - Thanks to Tom and all! -- Deb from NJ
for everyone curious since this is a northerner it doesn't get 90 degrees, summer time in the south if you are fishing middle of the day they will be DEEP to get away from the heat
Bass fishing with a fly rod is certainly addictive!!!!
somewhat new texas fly angler here, thank you for putting together this video! i will be tear'n'em up now

Im about to take my first fly fishing trip. Wish me luck!
Good luck!
How’d it go?
Very comprehensive and beautifully produced. Thank you
Such a great video. Hope to be able to fish soon. Still in isolation here. Thanks.
Fishing is pretty isolated
25ib is heavy for bass leader I typically use 12ib leader for bass
i really wish you guys would also includes °c instead of °F only. Excellent video none the less. Not a complaint but more of a suggestion :)
Thanks
Great suggestion!
Great information! I finally started going for some largemouth after watching the first video. Keen to try some of these techniques out in the next couple of days.
Do you guys have any videos on going after Panfish? Stuff like Crappie and Bluegill?
We did one focussed on crappie and bass. Can be found here: ruclips.net/video/VBUmX2m4Er4/видео.html
Always thought this.. Adipose isn't the same as the Dr. Who fat loss pill is it?
Tom's looking ripped in this video.
Great series! Thanks for the tips - looking forward to gettin' some!
Love the vid but the music is so dramatic it’s confusing
stretching out my sinking line as we speak...love targeting bass!
Thanks for subbing!
Bluegills are suckers for a nice little popper, or a small flashy streamer.
What an excellent video! You covered so much thank you!
Glad it was helpful!

I've had tremendous success with bass on a small woolly bugger (yellow/green) with a pheasant tail beadhead trailing.
Do i have to match the weight of the fly with the rod?
generally you should. a pike fly that is seven inches long won't cast well on a 4 weight, but a small 2-3 inch streamer will. check with you local fly shop or use this guide to help you: www.orvis.com/fly-rods
Do you use a tapered leader or straight mono with an intermediate line?
Recommend you just use straight mono leader with sinking lines, no need for taper
@@newflyfisher thank you.
11 ads in a 36 minute video? Lol pass
Sam, thanks for letting us know this. RUclips started a new mid-video roll insertion and we don't know where or how much they are putting in. We will see what we can do to fix it. Again, thanks for letting us know
Can i catch catfish on a fly rod if so how?
yes you can, search youtube for instructions how
Great Video I learned a lot. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Great video man!! Just found your channel and your content is straight 🔥!! Keep it up and tight lines🎣🎣
lovely watersheds which is lacking in southern California, you're truly blessed!
WHAT LENGTH LEADER DO YOU USE
Usually 8-10 feet, depending on conditions
Good video uncle.. Like fishing..
👌🏼
3 lines are great, if you can afford them
Outstanding footage and excellent information. Tom's (and Pete's) presentation of information is always clear and concise. Thank you for sharing this excellent and very informative video.
Much appreciated!
Nice video Tom 👍🎣
Thanks 👍
New to fly fishing just wanted to learn. What set up as far as pole line and leader should I use to target bass up to 5 lbs

Excellent tutorial.

Bass ruin ecosystems.
How?
Nonsense.
