Gotta be, Hard Rock-wise, "Appetite For Destruction" by Guns N' Roses...it is so universally loved in my neck of the woods, that just starting the album, amd hearing the opening lick to "Welcome To The Jungle" always elicits a positive reaction, from my Mother to my Son, so it is always a good time...
I remember seeing "Rock of Ages" in a hymn book and thinking, "Wow! This church is cool!" and being very disappointed when we ended up not singing Def Leppard songs.
I was in 5th grade at a catholic school when this album came out. One of my friends was an accomplished piano player and the Sister who taught music class would have her play while the class sang. One day, my friend said she wanted to play "Rock of Ages" and Sister was very happy to let her. So the girl played the Def Leppard version and when she finished, Sister said she had never heard that arrangement, but that it was very nice. Those of us who knew what the girl was playing were trying not to laugh at Sister!
Ok Adam, prepare yourself for this absolutely true story. Back in 1984, I went to the Lutheran Church on my grandparents block in Detroit. My Grandpa was the doorman and my Grandma played the pipe organ. The pastor is in the pulpit and says, "Open your hymnal to page 333 and we'll sing Rock of Ages." I was only 7, but my eyes lit up. My Grandma was looking down at me with such pride that I was there that morning. She started playing and I started singing Rock of Ages. Except, I was singing Def Leppard and no one could figure out what was going on. My Mom still laughs about it to this day
I like the band, but the Rock of Ages is God the Father. The term refers to the fact that He is steadfast and eternal. Knowingly or not, Def Leppard’s lyrics dishonor God.
@@ordinaryman1904 I saw them with some friends in one of the first shows when he came back. They had a backup just in case he got tired or something. I happened to be sitting on a rail just above and behind Rick with a friend who’s also a drummer and wanted to sit as close to it as possible. When they came out into the stage the door was just below us. Needless to say we had what I call first row seats to him drumming away in his new kit and we were in awe. One of the best shows I’ve ever been too and they never needed that backup drummer.

Hello William, I am so sorry you do not have as many more years left as you deserve. I'm glad the years you did have were cool to you! Blessings and rocking to you.
Pyromania, and especially Photograph, is what got me hooked on Def Leppard in high school. Forty years later, they're still my favourite rock band of all time. Long live the 80s and Def Leppard!
That’s exactly me and my love for Def Leppard also. My first song that made them my favorite band was Photograph. I bought the Pyromania cassette, and listened to it from start to finish, over and over again. Coincidentally, my favorite band and album before Def Leppard was Foreigner 4. I didn’t know at the time they had the same music producer Mutt Lange.
I remember Friday Night Videos on NBC, had a voting contest each week pitting one video against another. Def Leppard’s “Foolin’” was the champion that year.
I went to one of their concerts back in 1988, I believe, where they played in the round. The crowd was wild, so in tune with each and every song, every word. No one was sitting down, everyone was singing and dancing. It was pretty powerful and amazing, all of us being there as a collective. One of my best concerts. You could talk about this band all day long, I'd never be bored.
I remember going to buy Pyromania when it was first released at lunchtime and I had to finish work before I could go home and play it, what an album. RIP Steve 'Steamin' Clark.
Same here. I was standing at Discomania, my local record store, when they opened that day. Those were the good old days when we’d peel that cellophane and place that brand new vinyl on the turn table.
@@ProfessorofRock I was you would make a video about Jim Croce , he deserves to be remembered he had good songs from silly sing alongs to very poignant songs
Man! Seeing the respect that those two musicians have for each other and the love they have for the other's music is so incredible! Thank you Adam, so much for sharing this.
I was a student in Sheffield, England in the mid 80s, such a great time in that city with local bands like Def Leppard, ABC, Human League crushing it. Just about every young person I knew there was in a band of some sort. A musical high point in time 😀
Mutt Lange is such a legendary producer. He always had a knack for creating ear candy. A great example is comparing his ex-wife Shania Twain's music from their time together to her latest stuff. The difference in quality is staggering.
That's funny. When my great grandmother was discussing what songs she wanted played at her funeral she said "Rock Of Ages" which perplexed me as "why would she want a Def Leppard song played at her funeral?".
Blown away by Photograph the first time I heard it on radio, I was eager to hear the rest of Pyromania. When I finally got the album, I couldn't stop playing it. I was in love with Joe's voice, the band's harmonizing, and instrumentation. They all just melded so well together. Both Pyromania and Hysteria are my favourite Def Leppard albums but, Pyromania is still my #1.
Pyromania is my absolute FAVORITE album of all time!!! Never, EVER gets old!!! This came out in my senior year of high school and every time I hear it, it carries me right back there. GREAT memories of my friends and I partying with this album as the backdrop!!! Def Lep FOREVER!!! 🤘🤘
I just want to drop a quick note to say what a fan I am of this channel! I watch every day. In your intro I always try to guess who the ep is about and am psyched when I’m right. I always think I’ll know trivia that you’ll miss and I’m always wrong. Lol. Of course the interviews are always top notch. Please, Adam, keep up the amazing work. 🤘🤘
Def Lepard is one of my absolute favorite rock bands of all time. I was first introduced to the Pyromania album on the school bus in the 80s. A kid would bring his boom box to school and we would rock out all the way to school. Even the bus driver loved listening to it!
@@kidmustang4543 The band Sum 41 has a nod to High n Dry in their video for the song In Too Deep, I believe right around 1:34 or so into the video if you pause it it's the album cover of High n Dry. There's no way it's a coincidence, the video is a comedic look at the band in a diving contest against what looks like guy's from a college diving team who are wearing red Speedo style swim trunks, if you pause right around then it's definitely a tribute to High n Dry, and judging by the comments I think I'm about the only person who caught it. They also have a nod to the 80's Rodney Dangerfield movie Back to School when one of the band members performs a "Triple Lindy" dive towards the end of the video. Another 80's video nod from a band from that generation is the video for My Chemical Romance's song Teenagers, it's a copy of the beginning of the movie Pink Floyd: The Wall, they reenactment the beginning of the movie where all the teenager concert goers break down the doors of the venue and storm the place, I think I'm about the only one that caught that one to.
"i dont care what anyone says" If you don't care what anyone says, then you wouldn't even say it, but you did. Also, the Internet stopped charging for capital letters and apostrophes.
Check out some of the 70s festival promos with Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, believe it or not. They wisely distanced themselves from labels.
This is one of the albums that got me into rock music, 12 year old me had it on cassette tape. Still a great album today, fills me with nostalgia and still a great band now.
I'm a huge Def Lep fan. My favorite is Pyromania! I still have my LP from 83. I sure miss the "terror twins" and their awesome guitar duos. I'm a huge fan of the Sweet also, and I love how Def Lep was influenced by them.❤ Rick Allen is a great inspiration with his amazing comeback from tragedy. RIP Steve Clark. Miss you!💔🕯️
Pyromania was one of the top 20 albums of the 80’s, hands down. I loved all of it, but Foolin’ and Too Late for Love were my favorites. I can’t believe Photograph didn’t hit #1. I remember being ecstatic that I got the cassette and a poster for Christmas that year. Brilliant album. This album was the backdrop to my first forays into parties, and ahem....., so it holds a special place in my heart. 🖤
There's like ...very, very few albums that you hear the first time and you're just gobsmacked ...high n dry was it for me. Perfect from start to finish and I never tire of listening.
Def Leppard has always been a great band, but it was a huge loss when Steve Clark passed. He had huge input for lyrics, the guitar riffs and was a huge part of why the band was so successful.
My all time favorite band. ❤ Feels like they were like my long lost cousins as they were in my life ON THE DAILY. I looked at, listened to and watched EVERYTHING I could get my hands on.
Pyromania was one of three tapes that I wore out and replaced so I could continue destroying my eardrums. The others were Whitesnake "Slide it in" and ACDC "Back in Black." They spoke to me like no other.
Biggest rock albums of the eighties. 1. Def Leppard-Pyromania 2. AC/DC- Back in Black 3. Van Halen-1984 4. Guns and Roses-Appetite 5. Whitesnake-Whitesnake 6. Rush- Moving Pictures 7. Scorpions- Love at First Sting 8. Bon Jovi- Slippery When Wet 9. Poison- Look What the Cat Dragged In. 10. Journey- Escape
I remember when the album debuted. The radio stations played it all summer long. The weather was so hot, well into the night. Could only sit out with your friends, waiting for the singles from the album to come on. Simple, but amazing time.
Pyromania is one of my absolute favorites. I have had it on LP, cassette and cd over the years and played them all heavily. The album came out in the heyday of my early AD&D days and whenever it came on the radio while we played we would pause the game to crank it up. I translated the pre-song countdown to be "Oonta, Gleebin, Gloutin, and Globin", which I used as names for four of my characters, a set of dwarven brothers.
Thank you Professor for this episode! Watching it sent me instantly back in time and thinking about the massive cassette collection I had in my youth (I'm 52 now). There were three tapes that I had to replace multiple times due to stretching, being eaten, or never returned from being borrowed: John Cougar's American Fool, J. Geils' Freeze Frame, and Def Leppard's Pyromania. Pyomania is without a doubt their masterpiece. No fast forwarding needed just press play, flip the tape, press play. Every song was rocked! However, Too Late For Love was the one that jolted my soul. Even today I still make sure the neighbors know that song.
I just don’t get a Neil Young, his voice grates on me like Janis or Joni. To each their own. Decent albums and helped keep rock alive in the 80s countering the synth-pop stuff.
This album will always mean something special to me. At the age of 12 my older cousin at who's house I was staying over at called for me from upstairs and said hey coming here into my room and this was not something that he did most of the time I was getting told to stay away or flat out getting picked on by him and his friends, but this time was different he said I just bought something and I want to know what you think of it and he started playing this album and man I was hooked and have been a fan ever since.
@@nickhill8612 He was as long as he wasn't picking on me being the pest of a younger cousin lol, but his sister kept him in check as much as possible. As we got older we became a lot closer and went to concerts together.
@@jaywillard13 That's cool, people change as they get older and it sounds like you had some good times. Like DLR sang Those were good times, dam good times.
I'm always amazed at the creativity and their ability to put it all together into the sounds and performances that we love. The wonderful thing about Def Leppard is that they make rock fun. To some music is an expression to me it's a release from the everyday life. I really like fun songs. You know the ones that force you to sing along with a loud voice.
I was fortunate enough to see Def Leppard 3 times, the first in 1981 when they opened for Blackfoot, then for Pyromania and Hysteria, they've always been and always will be one of my favorite bands, and as a young guitar player back then they had a big influence on me, but not for guitar for singing, they made me realize I had to do more than just stand there and play guitar I had to be able to sing as well, to me they will always be one of the greatest rock bands ever and I still listen to their music on a daily basis❤
In 1977 I was 17 huge rock guy, I heard of this band Def and they were my age, I remember thinking how young they were to becoming famous, and boy did they ever. Thanks for the ride back in time
Pyromania was my introduction to Def Leppard and it was fantastic! They are my favorite rock band of the 80s and I still rock out to their songs today!
Pyromania was such a great album that it was TOO good for me. When that album was released, I was also getting into early Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, and Pyromania had/has SO many slick hits that I had a hard time accepting it. Without a doubt, Def Leppard and that album truly brought twin-guitars in-your-face to the mainstream.
Hysteria is one of the CDs I bought in my early 20s from my mall when we had a music store in it. I loved the cd. I loved many of their songs whenever they were on the radio or MTV when I was younger. All of Def Leppard's singles are my favorites. My most favorites of their singles (which I love all) would be Hysteria, Love Bites, and Foolin.
To answer your question, what I remember is seeing a poster of them on my friend's big brother's bedroom wall and him telling me that his father really liked them. And then my mother tapping her foot to Photograph. And then other friends who didn't listen to rock music saying they loved Def Leppard. My kids fell in love with Def Leppard at an early age. It just seems that regardless of age or musical preference, Def Leppard seems to capture the ear of one and all. There may be other bands that fit that description but for me, Def Leppard were the first that I knew of whose fan base had no boundaries. Rock of Ages, indeed.
Pyromania was the first album I spent my own money on. I got that and Quiet Riots Metal Health on the same day. Whenever I listen to songs from Pyromania it always brings back great memories and nostalgia.
Loved this album when it came out and it is still in my top 5 of all time. Vastly superior to Hysteria. Billy's Got a Gun is my favorite song from the album. I love everything on the album, but that one just has a certain atmosphere that I can't describe or explain, but I get chills every time I hear it.
Favorite band of all time. My first concert was the Pyromania tour. Just like you, it took Hysteria to make me realize how much I liked them and then turn to other albums like High 'n' Dry and On Through the Night! From then I was hooked. I've seen more Def Leppard shows than any other band. Rock On!
I'm 46 years old so I remember MTV in its earliest days. Even though back then I didn't have cable TV many of my neighbors in the neighborhood did. So I still remember fondly spending weekends over with friends and doing things there that I couldn't do at home. My taste in music is real eclectic. Mozart to Metallica, Hank Williams Senior to Crosby stills Nash and Boyz II Men. As well as everything in between. But when people ask me to list my top five acts of all time. Two are always there from this genre, Def Leppard is first bon Jovi is second.
@@Brian_W. My earliest memory was at age 6. But my father used to watch and his story was I was bouncing on his knee.😊 Of course my father could be a little bit of A bs er.. also by that time my parents we're divorced so I lived in two different households. I was at my dad's most weekends, and with him making more money at the time then my mom he had cable. I think also he would spoil me quite a bit back then.
I LOVE Def Lep and Journey and have seen them both multiple times. They both play great shows! Cracks me up how Neal nearly always has his guitar during interviews and he picks on it like a nervous habit.
Thank you Professor for your consistent coverage of Def Leppard. I grew up in Hong Kong attending British schools, and was often laughed at for my infatuation with Pyromania and Hysteria, all the more after G'n'R(I really like them too) with Appetite for Destruction stole their thunder. Your work has given me this sense of vindication and redemption.
Heehee, my best friend got Pyromania for a penny from Columbia House and we dubbed a tape on my brother's stereo. I wore that poor tape to pieces! Of course, Def Leppard lived large on my wall of posters scavenged from the pages of Creem, Metal Edge, Circus, RIP and many others😍🎶,
@@hellradiolives Haha, I would have been the same way! I’d have Duran Duran, Thompson Twins, definitely make room for the two Kings of Pop (Prince, MJ) and so many others.
Wow ! That firing is so much like how Metallica fired their lead guitarist Dave Mustaine because of his toxic drug abuse and lousy guitar playing because of it ! Cool behind the scenes info on the making of Pyromania!
My first post concert hearing loss was Def Leppard, opened by Queensryche. Such a good concert. This was post drummer arm loss, and they still rocked the house down.
I can’t believe it’s been 40 years since Pyromania. I was in London doing a quarter in college in 1984. Peter Mensch had put his address on the back of Pyromania and me being who I am, visited there. I did ring the bell that said “office” though. Peter explained that he had no idea the album would be so popular. And a few weeks later Rick Allen had his car accident and “Do They Know It’s Christmas” was recorded. Amazing time in history.
Def Leppard and Bon Jovi - two of your mum's favourite hard rock bands. I consider Def Leppard to be the undisputed Kings of the power ballad, as it seems half of their hits are love oriented. When Love And Hate Collide is my utmost favourite song from them. The soaring crescendo of the chorus and the patent longing of the verses are a brilliant marriage. Such a good song.
Thanks for honoring Def Leppard here. This made me want to go back and listen to the full albums. I like to do karaoke and when I do "Pour Some Sugar On Me" it's a real crowd-pleaser, lights everyone up. When Def Leppard was most popular I was in jr. high and I remember distinctly that their sound was more upbeat and positive, celebrating life, than many other rock bands which were cynical. There's a place for all of that - it wasn't until the last 10 years that I've learned to appreciate that the more cynical songwriters were right to be anti-establishment - but Def Leppard is simply pure light and love rock energy, whenever I hear their music I feel absolutely uplifted in a way that no other music can do!
Def Leppard is awesome! Interesting piece of history; if you look at the vast majority of their best songs ~ photograph, foolin, rock of ages, bringin' on the heartbreak, it could be you, sugar, animal, too late for love etcetera, etcetera. You will see the nucleus of the bands writing was Steve Clark. When he died, so did their musical chemists. After Hysteria, let's be real - the music was sub- par at best. And I am a massive fan of them - but Steve was the key 🗝 . Are you getting it? 😏
Two superb albums, DL kept guitar rock strong during the weaker European invasion of punk keyboard pop. Thanks Adam. You are the truly the best Rock history source online!
Back when Pyromania came out, I was 15 and I walked over 5 miles to get the album on vinyl. After I turned 16 and got my first real job and a car the first cassette I bought was Pyromania.. I've owned Pyromania in all medias available at the time. Being the youngest of 5 siblings it was the first album that I felt was mine and wasn't something I got because my brothers or sisters listened to it.
Pyromania was (and will forever be) the most PERFECT ALBUM ever released! I remember being in 8th grade the first time I heard FFFFooling and my life was completely changed!! And like you said, I can put my cassette on and sit down because I would NOT be skipping any of the songs!! I guess that’s way I was SO DISAPPOINTED with Hysteria… unfortunately, I could not STAND that album…
I never got to see them live, but their studio productions sound SOOOOO good. To this day I can't think of another band that had this good of a sound and production quality. Truly top notch and a sound to strive for.
I was working at the Detroit Eastern Market selling produce and we would drive down the night before. The night driving in the warm fall air with Def Leopard playing created a magical feel that I will always remember as the best times of my life !!! Salute !!!
when i first began to listen to the guys i began to get all the info about the band and was so inspired to learn that even through issues that would have been the demise of other bands but not Def Leppard they continued on and stood by each other during it all and to today i not only admire the music but their brotherhood of the band

I hung out with the guys backstage before an Ozzy concert at a venue East Coast, mid-Florida area. Early '80s. They were the NICEST bunch of guys you could ever want to meet.
Thanks for doing this video. In the 80’s I was in elementary school and Jr. High- and while all the other girls at school were little teeny boppers obsessed with NKOTB, I was a little rocker chick; and I was completely OBSESSED with Def Leppard. I had all the cassette tapes, the concert VHS “In the Round in Your Face”, and everything I wore ( besides my school uniform) was Def Leppard : T shirts, hats, and patches sewn onto my Jean jacket. I even pinned Def Leppard buttons onto my school jumper. I had their posters as my bedroom wallpaper, and wore out several Walkmans listening to On Through the Night, High and Dry, Pyromania and Hysteria on the school bus. Honestly, Def Leppard was probably the happiest part of my childhood/adolescence. Just a few months ago I made my husband and my 13 year old son watch a video about Rick Allen’s drum kit- pure genius, and an inspiration!
Favorite band of all time and seeing them on the Hysteria tour (Tesla opening) is still one of my favorite memories of all time!!! Great show with great friends and just singing along at the top of my lungs!!!
One of the few bands I've seen in concert. I went for Cheap Trick, even handled a couple of songs from Poison, and then enjoyed Def Leppard. Worth driving a few hundred miles.
Def Leppard were my staple from my preteen years all the way to adulthood. I had not had my drivers license very long when Hysteria came out and I absolutely wore the print off that cassette blasting it all summer long with the windows down on my Mustang. What a summer with the soundtrack of Hysteria. One I will never forget.
Thanks for this video. Pyromania was the first album I ever bought with my own money when I was 12 years old. One of my all time favorites. Every song is great IMO. Rock Rock Till You Drop is my favorite track too. You're right, it's one of those albums where you just put it on and listen to it all the way through. Hysteria was a huge commercial success, but I don't think it can hold a candle to Pyromania as far as a "hard rock" album goes.
Fun fact about Rock! Rock! As mentioned here, it was an earlier song repurposed for Pyro. When Mutt came on board, he wanted them to simplify their lyrics to make them more punchy and impactful. Much of early Lep had a lot of Zep and Prog rock lyric structures, so they were very wordy. Mutt sought to make the lyrics more catchy and straightforward, less flowery and meandering, much more rhythmic and fitting into the beat of the songs better. Let it Go is similarly a previous riff from an earlier song married to updated, catchier lyrics.
We used to sing these songs over and over. Man what a trip back in time. Growing up in the 80s was such a treat but naturally we didn't know it at the time.
Another great video! Pyromania is in my top 5 albums of all time for sure. And 2 diamond selling albums in a row from the time when you had to go to a record store to get it is all the more impressive. Kids these days just wouldn't understand...
I have seen the group Def Leppard in concert more than any other band. About nine or 10 times, always entertaining they put on a great show and their songs are so memorable, that I even like the new songs they put out.

Same here. I was standing at Discomania, my local record store, when they opened that day. Those were the good old days when we’d peel that cellophane and place that brand new vinyl on the turn table.

Shania Twain don't need him to make great music
He’s what made Heartbeat City ear candy.
Yeah, her last album tanked without him. I don’t agree with him cheating, but her output was much better with his production.

That's funny. When my great grandmother was discussing what songs she wanted played at her funeral she said "Rock Of Ages" which perplexed me as "why would she want a Def Leppard song played at her funeral?".
She might have meant the old hymn.

Even the bus driver loved listening to it!
i dont care what anyone says, on through the night and high & dry are two of the greatest albums of the eighties, and leppards two finest albums.
I agree. Though i'd place Pyro above them.
Agree. High and Dry is a straight up masterpiece. The band was never the same without Willis.
@@kidmustang4543
The band Sum 41 has a nod to High n Dry in their video for the song In Too Deep, I believe right around 1:34 or so into the video if you pause it it's the album cover of High n Dry.

Pyromania unfortunately had to contend with Michael Jackson’s Thriller that year. I don’t think anyone would’ve had a chance against that juggernaut.
There's like ...very, very few albums that you hear the first time and you're just gobsmacked ...high n dry was it for me. Perfect from start to finish and I never tire of listening.
I agree! Great record!

Love it. Thanks Jim!
Oh, but be careful Jim! You don’t want to concern the ear doctor!
I also wore out Bon Jovi's SLIPPERY WHEN WET
Biggest rock albums of the eighties.
1. Def Leppard-Pyromania
2. AC/DC- Back in Black
3. Van Halen-1984
4. Guns and Roses-Appetite
5. Whitesnake-Whitesnake
6. Rush- Moving Pictures
7. Scorpions- Love at First Sting
8. Bon Jovi- Slippery When Wet
9. Poison- Look What the Cat Dragged In.
10. Journey- Escape
I remember when the album debuted. The radio stations played it all summer long. The weather was so hot, well into the night. Could only sit out with your friends, waiting for the singles from the album to come on. Simple, but amazing time.
The song "Hysteria" is an absolute masterpiece. Funny that it was the bassist that came up with the melody.
Why?
With plenty of help from Pink Floyd.
Great episode!! Congrats Professor on that privilege to interview Joe and Neal at the same time. Wow
He sounds like a cool older cousin.

That's cool, people change as they get older and it sounds like you had some good times.
I saw them twice. once at don valley stadium (their home town of sheffield) and once at wembley arena. Two days i will never forget.
Loved the interview. Was a huge fan of both Def Leppard and Journey back in the day. Still am. Great stuff.
For me Rocket and Gods of War are the highlights. But the whole album end to end is fantastic.
Love Bites is an incredible song, but it’s hard to believe they only hit the top spot once!
I love these videos Adam. This is the second night in a row that I've gotten home from work and watched a few of these back to back
Loved this album when it came out and it is still in my top 5 of all time.

Yeah, Steve was THE secret ingredient to their irresistible hooks and melodies.

Thanks Robin. Keep the knowledge coming!
Mutt was right on it all along!
We used to sing these songs over and over. Man what a trip back in time. Growing up in the 80s was such a treat but naturally we didn't know it at the time.
