I carried a few of the older style Italian models throughout the 80's & 90's, but unfortunately sold them off.
Still have a few OTFs, (which are excellent blades), but I sometimes miss the old kicker-spring models.

Good comparison video showing the new DA OTF Stiletto versus the classic. I would submit however there is a 3rd "new school" stiletto design worth adding to a future review, and that is the type that uses a coil spring to deploy the blade versus the traditional leaf spring. The newer designs are much less expensive to manufacture, tend to be light, and extremely reliable! The reason is because of the coil versus leaf spring driver.
In a leaf spring knife the spring only powers the blade for a fraction of an inch, essentially catapulting it out, reliant on the blade's inertia to carry to open lock. If the blade encounters a block as it deploys, it stops and requires the user either manually open it, or close it to reset the spring. This would not be a good situation if the fight were already on, or if only only had ONE HAND to work with and really needed that blade to open! Also, leaf springs tend to become brittle and break over time, and can be difficult to replace, especially in knives that are held together by rivet.
In a coil spring stiletto, the blade is fully powered throughout it's deployment arc into lock by the spring. If blocked during opening, as soon as the blade clears the obstacle it will continue to swing around and lock up. This makes the coil spring highly reliable for single-handed deployment! Even if the blade doesn't quite lock due to the blade being nearly fully open when blocked, holding the button down and giving the knife a vigorous snap will accomplish the job. Coil springs almost never break and these newer designs tend to be held together by screws and can be readily disassembled and reassembled. Plus, coil springs can be easily sourced.
The OTF design does offer full one-handed opening and closing and come in very handy for many household tasks. Stilettos do a great job of cutting string, and cord, and slicing box tape. And of course they can be used for SD with enough blade length.

    • @katsu-graphics5634
      @katsu-graphics5634 2 года назад

nail nick automatics are a product of 1980's kit knives. . . so they could be sold as manual folders, unless you live in a state that does not prohibit automatics, then you can drop in the spring, which was shipped along, but un-installed. Look at the pin below the safety, it has a brass washer. This is the kick-spring retaining pin the user had to install. . . So from 1982 until about 2009, a lot were made with nail nicks. I had not seen one until Edge Company 1986. . .but actually Atlas was the first company to ship kits.

The original Italian switchblade stilettos were made long before the 1950's. Some can be found that were actually made in the late 1800's. Those were picklock stilettos where the lock tab had to be "picked " up and off the blade pin with a fingernail. To buy one today would set you back $3000 or more. They are rare and highly sought by collectors. They were much more popular in the 1940's and didn't change much until the 1960'say and are a lot less expensive unless you are talking about the most collectable ones like Latama, Coricama, or Edwin J. That was when the later bolster release locking mechanism models like you have here started showing up and eventually replaced the old school picklocks. OTF Stilettos were also made in the 1950's but were much more rare. Finally, someone commented that the side release model wasn't a true stiletto because the blade was flatground. They are mistaken. The term stiletto comes from the outer shape of the blade which tapers to a point meant for stabbing.

For the New School Stiletto I posted the website in the video.
For the Old School one there are a lot of companies that sell them.

Well, to each their own. I carry a traditional OTF on a daily basis, but do enjoy carrying a switchblade on occasion. Key in life is carry what you want- there are enough choices for everyone, from folders to OTF's, and from gas station specials to high dollar high end models/makes.

      @@scooterusa13 it say this
Ohio law provides that one may not carry in a concealed manner a "deadly weapon," as that term is statutorily defined.
      And
No general restrictions on commerce or public carry
Does this mean I’m in the clear to have any size of a old school switchblade like the one the ellie uses in the last of us

I am NOT sure of the knife laws in Italy.
I would recommend you research it yourself BEFORE you attempt to purchase said knife.
If you want to purchase the knife, the website is listed in the information section below and on the card displayed in the video.

Those new oth knives of that design are complete garbage at any price point, the springs will break within weeks, don't waste your money.

Well, I can't speak for every brand, but the one I have has never given me any issues. I don't carry or use it daily - to be honest, it mainly sits in the drawer.
I haven't read of those having any more issues than any other OTF knives. The brand I tested comes with a lifetime warranty.
