To make it more family friendly, they removed all of the drinking and smoking references to candy and root beer, which makes it seem like the kids are being punished for doing childlike things. 🤦🏽♀️
Disney is so scared of those conservative family groups coming after them for not being “family friendly”, everything begins to looks bad.
Girl Meets World is a perfect example. The plot and especially the dialogue was unbelievably hard to watch. I couldn’t get through the first episode after rewatching it several years later as an adult. They couldn’t even talk about serious topics like Boy Meets World did when it had more freedom on ABC.
I was just thinking this too! Although it would be pretty off putting seeing a bunch of real kids smoking in this movie, I liked how they did it in the original cartoon to show that these bad adult habits can lead to consequences, and by now showing the kids just having root beer and candy it takes away that theme/message :/
Subliminal messenging they cut off root and than another child said root beer right after the very first one in that scene so "Beer, root beer"....
I mean, when children nowadays think of misbehaving, they don't usually mean smoking ciggars, but eating forbidden food such as candy. We're not in the 1940s anymore

Gepetto letting Pinocchio go to school by himself shows both how the original kid died and that Gepetto has learned absolutely nothing.

My dad always took me to school and back as a kid to make sure I get there up until high school. When I go to high school he would have me wait in his car until the school bus showed up before leaving even when the bus stop was a block away from our house.
Geppetto has a semi Jewish old man accent, the blue fairy is British, the schoolteacher has an Italian accent, some dolls are French, Pinochio had no accent and Jiminny has a southern drawl. So much for keeping the origin of the story.

The child trafficking, the donkey scene, and of course freaking Monstro. The scene where he pretended to close his eyes to trick the fish into thinking he was sleeping was creepy and don’t get me started on his sneezing. Not to mention how he could move as fast as a freaking freight train. Lord.

Not gonna lie, I knew this was about to happen. The original Disney movie showed the boys smoking and drinking alcohol and portrayed this as a bad thing. Nowadays if anyone ever dared to show that, Karens and snowflakes would completely lose their shit and try to cancel the movie for "promoting smoking and alcoholism".
the story emphasizes on true love, sacrifice, and family. It is not a hollow husk.
To me it seems at very least a basic yet extreme story of stranger danger. They removed the blame from kids and emphasized how there are adults that will abuse kids. Instead of an influencer reference maybe they should have done an Epstein one 🤷
You know we've gone full meta when we won't even depict "bad" things like smoking or drinking on screen to teach why they're bad, because we don't want to show "bad" things on screen anymore. Because they're bad and we can't show bad things to kids. Like, how the hell are you supposed to have a moral to the story then?

Even as a kid, I always thought it was so weird that the kids in Pinocchio were essentially portrayed as evil (or at least bad enough to justify being turned into donkeys) when all they did was smoke and play pool. The fact in this one, all they did was drink soda and smash things they were told were okay to smash is just hilarious.

Also pool/billiards was pretty exclusively a gambling game in the 40s, definitely not something they wanted kids playing.
Today... billiards is still played that way some places, but it's also in a lot of casual fun places and isn't nearly as stigmatized.
So even keeping that in it still doesn't have the significance it did in the original.

I think the Pleasure Island subplot might have been the inspiration for Poppy Playtime: kids go some place they think will be fun only to be transformed into something else and sold like cattle.

I think they should have used a real puppet for Pinnochio and a male actor who's tall and red haired who looks like a fox. You're right anamorphic animals make no sense in this world.
They arguably didn't make sense in the original story either, but it's a fairytale with magic wish-granting fairies and a talking cricket, so it's forgivable.

The original Pinocchio movie is already terrifying on its own right. The one with Lampwick turning into a donkey while screaming his mother as his donkey went insane, crashing everything down is disturbing enough.

So, basically…they took out the moral dilemma Pinocchio has to deal with to become a real boy in exchange for making him this pure hero who is naïve with no other character trait but can do no wrong because hero and also that would take too much work…thus completely destroying the whole point of the movie. I think Pinocchio is being remade so much is because it’s an easy movie to be changed but still have the same morals. Like making certain scenes darker and others lighter.

The craziest thing is that in Walt Disney's will he didn't want any remakes of his original movies. They recently came across that and wasn't supposed to make anymore remakes and HERE WE ARE with a super creepy version on Pinocchio 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️. It's just so sad that Disney the company isn't respecting Walt Disney final wish.

I will not forget that one part where Pinocchio's catching Gepetto up on everything in classic Disney fashion and he just goes,

In Italy Pinocchio is a beloved tale, originally written by Carlo Collodi, set in Tuscany, and many Italian movies have been directed about it. But to me it is a real pity that in both Disney movies, the old one and the recent one (and also the recent Italian one) the last part of the story is cut off, while being the best part because it gives fullfillment. After returning home from their adventure with Monstro (from which they escape thanks to a talking tuna fish) Geppetto comes down with a fever and Pinocchio takes care of him. During the day he works in a farm in place of the farmer's donkey, that is sick and near to his death. Pinocchio recognizes him immediately, he's Lampwick (Lucignolo in Italian), and this brings to the heartbreaking scene of Lampwick's death (actually my favourite scene of the whole story because it is packed with emotions). Pinocchio is paid a little money and a warm glass of milk that he gives to his ill father, Geppetto, helping him heal. Moreover at night he studies for school. This is the moment in which he is rewarder by the Fata Turchina (Fairy Godmother) and is turned into a real boy. Not because of a single heroic selfless gesture, but with everyday hardwork, learning his lessons about life and honesty little by little, actually showing care towards his loved ones. That's why in my opinion the best pinocchio movie the Roberto Benigni one, the 2002 one. Or if you are curious you could also check out the older Italian Pinocchio movies that are visually quite scary but wonderful, like the Luigi Comencini six episode series "The adventures of Pinocchio" (1972) which is a classic.

Something pretty sad: y'know the scene where Gepetto discovers Pinocchio went to Pleasure Island, it's sort of implied that he lost his son when he went to Pleasure Island, as he is openly horrified.
He may have possibly lost his original son at Pleasure Island. It did seem like a not again type of response.

Well, since Tom Hanks is in the film, the horror could be about Epsteins Island, when people discover he was a regular and once purchased a 13yr old girl.
The remakes are so that the IP doesn't become public so Disney can keep profits from them. Disney can only own the IP for so long until it becomes public pretty much. So remakes will renew the licensing.

not sure chief. Pinocchio is already public domain as the og author has been dead over 100 years as with the other fairy tales hijacked by Disney. They cant own the story but their own individual creation. and each movie would be a separate entity. You guys, Disney can recognize a good story but totally cant create one without borrowing.
@Mush Mouf Keep In mind that most of the stories are public domain. It's the likeness of the character(s) that they need to keep. This is called copywrite. The story is irrelevant.

The kid screaming to Pinocchio to help him while his hands turn into hooves, him crying to his mother until he starts braying...
All of those kids shoved into small and crowded wooden boxes, waiting to be sent to mines, to the circus,... And probably some of them could have been sold for meat.
None of them got a happy ending. None.

I'm gonna bet that the reason WHY this remake makes it so that Pinocchio doesn't do anything wrong or naughty is because they don't want kids to model his behavior and for parents to complain. However, it loses the entire point of the story in the process.

I believe the message from the 1940's scene was "A lie grows until it is as plain as the nose on your face." Which is honestly really good advice for little kids. So of course this version undercuts that and uses the nose growing gimmick to get him out 'cause of course "we can't have a fairy come and give him a get out of jail free card like the original, people will say that's just lazy writing".
It's the same with every remake, they completely misunderstand the message of their earlier work and try to "improve" it by having no message at all - or one that completely contradicts the good messages of the original.
On top of that, pleasure island was meant to tell kids that, hey, it’s actually not so great to drink and smoke, but by replacing it with root beer and candy the only threat is obesity? The whole movie just feels like the result of a big game of telephone, but instead of a sentence it’s the entirety of the first movie’s plot and themes

Apparently in the original he drank actual beer, smoked a cigar, and loved smashing stuff. This is the flavorless, 'safe' version. All life drained out of it.
Pinocchio's portrayal of child trafficking is terrifying but I guess its somewhat realistic once they have you there's no second chances or happy endings really... the boys who were sent of to slave away as donkey's forever probly never saw their families again. pretty traumatizing for a children's film but the message is strong.

Pinnochio, the original, was actually made during World War 2 and while the donkey scene happened in the book and Walt Disney happened to be following the book.
I wonder if people back in the day thought about people at the Holocaust camps as well as the kids while watching that donkey scene. It completely breaks my heart and sends chills down my spine at the mere thought of it. :(

@@andreasmeelie1889 Pinocchio was wrapping up production by the time Germany invaded Poland and kicked off the war, and almost two years before American involvement. For that matter, the worst of the Holocaust was still a couple years in the future and the American public wouldn't grasp the full extent of the horrors until after the war.
If anything, the choice of basing a movie around an Italian children's book is kinda interesting. Two years later, Disney would be producing anti-Italian propaganda.
It's even worse in the book: Lampwick/Candlewick gets sold to a farmer, and Pinocchio sees him again after he becomes a real boy and starts working for such farmer to support the ill Geppetto. And that's because Lampwick is dying from being overworked.

In the original cartoon the smoking and drinking were clearly framed as a _bad_ thing, and they were a corrupting influence on Pinocchio.
Also I was getting big “come to our Disney theme parks” vibes from Pleasure Island, which made it _actually_ feel icky.
Yeah pleasure island the *child trafficking center* should not look *anything* like Disney’s theme parks or be in *any way* appealing. It’s like they’re showing kids a white van giving away free candy and then the van just gives the kid a ride to school. Like no, please stop romanticizing terrible crimes Disney. By taking out the bad, they are potentially hurting kids. Great.

I'm looking forward to the Del Torro version; that dude does not shy away from the dark/creepy/truly horrific elements of a story (and from what I understand, the OG story of Pinnochio got pretty dark).

the original Pinocchio scared the shit out of me as a child but that was part of the reason I loved it so much
I believe the reason that everyone is suddenly making Pinocchio movies is that Disney lost the exclusive rights to the visual depiction of the character and it's gone to the public domain, since the original was so long ago and they didn't make a new one in time. The story itself was always public domain, but the visual representation was owned by Disney (I could rant for hours about the way Disney has fucked over public domain but plenty of RUclipsrs have done it for me and better). Disney made the remake both because the usual "let's remake our movies but WORSE because MONEY" and also because they still want people to associate Pinocchio with Disney.
Edit: To clarify, I'm not 100% sure on this explanation. It's one that I've seen passed around and I couldn't find anything concrete with my limited googling to say if it's true or not.

I think you're confusing a few different things. Disney didn't own the rights to the visual depiction of the character in general - they would the rights to _their own_ 1939 version of the character. And I can't find any source to back up the statement that that copyright expired. From some (admittedly dodgy) sources I can find online, their copyright would run out on their version of Pinnochio some time after 2036.
I think what you're thinking of is the recent Winnie the Pooh horror flick, which was able to be made _precisely because_ the original work by A.A. Milne went into public domain, so Disney lost its exclusive rights to it. However, again, Disney still has the rights to its own original depiction of the character, which is why the character in the horror film couldn't have a solid red shirt.

This isn't anything proven based on fact but just guesswork, however I feel like part of why there are Pinocchio remakes this year specifically is simply because of Del Toro's. It's been a known project of his since 2008 but it got shelved and then seemed done for good by 2017 until 2018 when Netflix had acquired the production.
Part of the business game is that you're not above trying to rush out something just for the sake of stealing the limelight from someone else. Disney had already announced back in 2015 that they were planning to do a remake for Pinocchio, but it didn't have a confirmed slot on their upcoming slate. With the announcement of Del Toro's project being back on in 2018, I'm guessing they bumped up whatever development for a Pinocchio remake they had as a priority in order to try and cut off attention given to Del Toro's version. Probably had to complete some projects that were in the works already to do so fully though.
The Russian version with Pauly Shore was just a bonus made to mooch off of the Pinocchio hype they knew would be happening because of the announcements of these productions. It reminds me of some of the releases that are made in Europe and Russia as a response to the trend of whatever Disney's releasing.
There have been other Pinocchio films since the 40s outside of Disney. The Adventures of Pinocchio.
It is in free domain, or at least was. Once every 40 years things become free domain until it is reserved again. That's why there's a bunch of terrible tv remakes of old movies and why occasionally there is like 5 of the same movie released in the same year

It’s so strange making Pleasure Island “kid friendly” and for it to be full of stuff kids irl would enjoy like soda and candy. It just tells kids that enjoying those things are wrong while in the original film the message was clear.
Well if they were to put drugs and cigarettes in this remake it would probably not be "suitable for children"

I feel like it was mainly because they drank and ate too much of it when they weren't allowed too because it's extremely unhealthy for the body.
I mean, who goes up to a kid and actively teach them smoking and drinking is bad? That’s not a real concern that parents have with children in today’s time. Smoking and drinking were much more prevalent in the 40s. It’s almost unheard of to see misbehaving children do those kinds of things. But eating excessive candy? That is a very genuine problem that we teach kids about today. So I don’t know, I see it as more of a reflection of changing times.
@@minisn3066 I mean, saying “no” to these things are still taught to children. Cigarette and alcohol consumption has declined over the years among the general population (which is wonderful) but, peer pressure still happens. Drug abuse still happens. It’s important for children to learn that partaking in these activities and running wild is wrong and has consequences. Never going home because you went overboard is a pretty good way to get the message across.
I agree that overconsumption of unhealthy, sugary food is a concern for children as obesity rates are increasing in many countries but, idk. I think the 2022 Pleasure Island still plays it too safe and that the punishment doesn’t fit the “crime” in this version.

Walked in on my brother watching the pleasure island scene where the kid gets turned into a donkey, the way that child screams for help and for his momma, the way he runs around completely helpless mixing with the sounds of the donkey leaving him unable of human speech is actually terrifying and straight up almost made me, someone who never gets emotional about movies, straight up start bawling.

Nope, he has the same moral problems ....the only differences is that you can see him learning from the experiences. Pinocchio is innocent and the idea that he was predispose to be evil and stupid ....was something that this one quickly switched out. I mean, he should have been tramutized by the first guy, but he got over it pretty quickly to be easily tricked by the next guy.

Pretty sure this movie was made for the same reason Aladdin was. They knew a competitor was making a highly artistic adaptation of the story so they pushed out one of their own before the other could be released. Then they conveniently planned its release for just like a month before the other so that it would hopefully tank the potential audience even further. The difference is that Aladdin was actually good.
I think smoking and drinking in the original is an important part of the story, because a lot of kids want to grow up quickly. And showing how adult vices can result in them getting hurt is a pretty good thing
And maybe it gives them the idea.
The main problem with all these remakes is this: the beats are all there, but the rhythm is all off.
When you compare scenes like Nala reuniting with Simba, the Donkey scene, Mulan's Decision, Belle in the West Wing, or even the Curse from Sleeping Beauty, you can tell the writers are TRYING to get that same UMPH but because the pacing is all off it just comes off as rushed and poorly executed. Pacing is everything in a film. The reason why the donkey scene and stampede are 10x better in the originals, is because of the buildup to the payoff. But the remakes just kind of fast forward to the payoff and thus the emotions are not there because they expect us to have already seen the original.

And that's why the remakes that kind of wandered off and did their own thing are considered the better remakes, like the Jungle Book. Either that or, like the case with Cinderella, you get people who are at least familiar with the tone the story should be going for because let's be real here, Kenneth Branagh's history as a Shakespearian Actor and background directing Medieval Historical Dramas make him kind of perfect for that movie. He gets that it's supposed to be grand.

I’m not sure about most simple. As a kid I did not understand what was going on in Pinocchio at all. Why were they getting turned into donkeys? Where did this whale come from? I understand it easy now but as a kid I was lost. Other Disney movies like Snow White or sleeping beauty, I understood those fine though.

The Monstro scene in the original was LEGENDARY, even as an adult. And I never even saw the movie as a kid, so it's not like I was riding on nostalgia. I can't believe they made him less scary.

Sorry if I’m a month late but Scuttle isn’t even a seagull in the movie anymore -_-, they made Scuttle a diving bird who can breathe under water and talk under water, which happened in the live action little mermaid where Scuttle was breathing under the water and talking to Ariel, Flounder, and Sebastian for 5 MINUTES! Which is how long that scene lasted! And last thing, Scuttle isn’t even a boy anymore, they wanted people to know that Awkwafina was playing Scuttle so badly up to the point where the GENDER SWAPPED THE DANG BIRD!

I will never fully understand how on earth Disney never fail to ruin a film that they themselves have ALREADY MADE. They always have to take a classic, brilliant film, batter us over the head with modern pop culture references and ¨Look at us, we mentioned this thing that the kids like nowadays¨ or ¨We got this character, but we made them SASSY. How hip are we!¨. Even them changing it to root beer or them making Pleasure Island less dark, or even making Lampwick less of a dick; the Pleasure Island scene used to terrify me as a kid, and I still hate watching it to this day. What Disney have done with the new film, however, is water it down and dilute it because nowadays people are far too sensitive to be watching that. It takes away from the overall message and I personally thoroughly dislike that. I also hate when they add characters SOLELY for the purpose of ¨They have a tragic backstory also they're disabled or gay or something idk¨. I think it's brilliant that people who are LGBTQ+ or disabled in some way are being represented, however it feels so damn forced. Every single remake I have seen from Disney has been pure dog shite and honestly terrible on its own, let alone compared to the original. I hate new-age Disney so much.
The original Disney animated version of Pinnochio scared me so much as a kid, I haven’t been able to watch it in full ever since. The entire second half of the movie is complete and utter nightmare fuel.

It wasn’t meant to be a kid’s movie. Back when the original Disney movies were coming out, they were just animated movies meant for the entire family. The fact that there were movies made entirely with animation was a marvel at that point in time.
Animated Pinocchio was never meant to be exclusively for kids, just like Snow White. Animation was simply a new medium that Disney wanted to develop, innovate, and incorporate. Unfortunately, the association between animated=kids grew as time went on, leading to many misconceptions that fairy tales are also supposed to be for kids.

Most nursery rhymes were terrifying. Before the industrial revolution it would be normal for children to die from a number of diseases and being kidnapped and abused so stories were meant as a lesson and warning for the real world
It’s a cautionary tale, don’t listen to strangers and follow them or you would be trafficked, don’t give into temptation and smoke and drink or you would become a donkey and get sold.
It’s the perfect children story that scare kids from doing dumb shit. I’m sure it stopped plenty of otherwise stupid kids for doing dumb stuff that can get them in trouble or even killed

Lampwick turning into a donkey is scary to me in both 😨 The cgi didn't actually bother me too much and, given that I was almost convinced Disney would lighten up the movie by rescuing all the kids or something (which I was not down for), that scene legitimately shocked me. He had tears in his eyes and they still had him screaming for his Momma. He's never going to see his Momma again...
On another note, I hope this is revealed to be Donkey's back story in the next shrek movie
