I actually quite liked it. Especially in retrospect when I realized it’s an allegory on hyper independence and isolation. But it did drone on a bit too long before hitting us with the double ending.
Listen guys! So he was indeed alone, this is in order so every plot twist was not for nothing, the Captain represents his logic, and you kinda see before we walks out the airlock, his logic just turns back on him. What a fantastic movie! I also loved when he saw the dead moth and the movie went quiet! I LOVE IT!!!

David Morrissey is a hugely respected actor here in the UK but US audiences would probably remember him as the Governor on the Walking Dead in the earlier years.
Casey Affleck's "dry and boring" acting style is the best and most succinct description of his acting style and that is a distractingly bad hair style on Lady Scientist.
I might check this out when it's free and I've forgotten this review (so 2 months or so). In the meantime I need to rewatch Moon. That was a good, twisty space madness flick. Oh Nick just mentioned Moon!
I saw this movie and dug it. But I have to tell you - you two doing an in-depth review of this film, really digging into everything in this small film and being very genuine with your takes when other reviewers skipped reviewing this altogether - it astounds me the volume of your work FULLY MIXED with QUALITY and CARE - you guys work hard and do a phenomenonal job! It was not a hallucination. Remember? The earthquake? That was something that happened when they was together, as it played over the radio. Another thing? She said "why do moths fly towards the light?" He said "for direction. To navigate." She said "moths fly towards the light as it "TENDS" (seems) to lead to safety." She said "it's a natural instinct because the alternative is flying down towards darkness." Then she said "but moths live in the darkness, eating clothes." In other words: the light "seems" (like the word: TEND) as if it leads to safety but why fly towards the light when you live in darkness? Because it's a "natural instinct" to fly towards the light BUT that doesn't mean that it's right. Just like a roach: if you cut the light on, the roach is running to the first spot where the light isn't shining, meaning it's running to the darkness because its instinct is to survive. BUT if that roach is looking for food or water, its natural instinct will be overpowered by its "desire" to eat or drink. That's why at the end it showed the moth dead in the emergency light fixture. Meaning, if the moth would've stayed in his natural habitat, which is the darkness, it wouldn't have gotten trapped in the light fixture and would've lived. And when he saw the dead moth and reflected on her words about the moth, that's why he closed his eyes because he knew the rescue was a hallucination. He was actually in the airlock about to be sucked into space. This movie was amazing!!!!!

@@Fatima-r3f4lit really depends on the movie and how it's handled. The Korean 'Old Boy' leaves a lot of questions, especially if you pay attention to the background.
It sounds like the very first Twilight Zone episode aired (Where Is Everybody) and doesn't seem like a bad idea. But twists are overrated, especially when you start with a basic bitch of a movie. They should have taken the wildness to 11, like some Waiting for Godot in space. And David Morrisey is the Governor from Walking Dead (the first Negan, lol).
I loved, loved, loved this movie….very interesting….he was for real in space tho…he died. He opened the door and out he went……dead. This movie makes u think.
And I second your comment, I did like the movie so much. The acting and struggle were real, and John did die at the end, yes. The movie left me confused and question what is true and what was hallucinated throughout the movie.
The movie was very good as a psychological thriller. The romantic scenes were not convincing for sure. But the whole premise of an isolated loner focused on his career/mission and then being surprised by an accidental romance/fling with a woman then throwing a wrench in the works for what he thought he wanted is such a good symbolic theme that echos real life. He was conflicted after meeting her and with the drug induced sleep got more and more conflicted when realizing he might not make it back to see her again. The other characters and their interactions IF YOU PAY ATTENTION is his rational mind at play with his emotional mind. They all represented his mind in conflict about the mission. Fishburne did a fantastic job as his rational mind and the other actor did a good enough job as the doubting. Once you put it all together at the end you realize it was brilliant and executed good enough even if the romance didn't come off as good as it might have with an actor other than Affleck. It was an excellent script and I can see why Fishburne agreed to do it.
Great review (help put into words what I was thinking) after watching the movie at a pre-screening. Zoe's hair style also bother me through out the movie!
Very good post as always. Movies like these reinforce my opinion that humans should only go into space if absolutely necessary. However-remember the movie "Surrogate" ? I think hyper realistic androids like from that movie should be developed and sent into space and controlled in part by humans safe on Earth but also A.I. for times when there would be too much of a delay to communicate between the human remote controllers and their surrogate counterparts are too great to make mission critical decisions in a timely fashion. In those cases A.I. should take over and complete the mission. And return to Earth. Also they should record the experience from the Surrogate bot's pov and sensations for people to experience for fun and also educational purposes. Can't wait to see this movie now!
🚀🛰🛸Sounds like they stole a bunch of plots from the Star Trek series, stuck them together, and called it a movie. I'll pass on this one! Big thanks for saving us again!
Guys, the real gag is that the story is about the effects of isolation during space travel. He was solo the whole time and humans aren't meant to be alone. We go crazy. He was having a mental breakdown.
Yeah I came here for discussion of the themes of the effects of being alone and how the brain copes and what the characters represent and instead I get 2 people missing the point for 30 minutes.
I don't think he was alone after all? I think the movie discusses the effect on long space travel and that drug they take for hibernation that affected all of them. So, John hallucinated that he was alone and underground the whole time, but he got spaced out at the end.
I see fish jelly alert and I open immediately, that’s the tweet. No actually tonight I’ll add a little more. Just came back from a double movie. First slingshot then 1992. Slingshot had me shook. Fantastic twist. 1992 failed in comparison because of the stupid factor. Slingshot does not deserve the low rotten tomatoes score if you ask me.
Nash and Fishburne are just parts of Casey's psyche fighting for control in his head. Of course neither of them is going to act normal, they're not full people. Then Fishburne (representing duty and rationaltiy) basically kills Nash (representing self-interest and fear) but Fishburne couldn't win against love (Zoe). Zoe was not a plant, it was Fishburne (rationality/duty) trying to win against her for control of Casey's actions.
This production company is bad. I keep hoping their next movie will be their breakout movie and they just keep making bad movies with good stars out of good ideas. I guess this isn't the one.
It was ok , looking back my big questions are , the physical damage , why do they have like 12 radios if the crew is 3 , or 1 if you believe siri , why would they send a crew of 1 or even 3 that far into space . The damage , it clearly showed sparks and damaged lines and vents . This would cause somefhing noticable on the system somewhere . Also a pressure vessel with thats sort of sharp inpact would definitely weeken the structure, think oceangate . So we can assume the damage is a hallucination. The radios why would you even need hand held radios like that if there was only one crew member , whos he gonna talk to in a 70 mile range . If its for returing he would maybe have 3 at most . As far as i can tell crew minimums would be over 5 for many reasons including redundancy . Overall i feel like this whole movie could have been edited differently, and maybe just cut with the airlock opening and black . Leaving everything much more ambiguous would have made a better ending concidering the movie . Im kindof sad about this movie it feels like it has so much potential and falls short in a few places . Also getting methane from a moon is a wild way of makeing green energy.
