Simpler times? Everything "back in the day" was labor intensive. All progress is basically to allow for more leisure time. If you want to mimic those "good ol' days" at home it's easy: turn off your electricity at the breaker panel, shut off your gas,and disconnect from the phone system. Do that for a week and get back to me about the "good ol' days"....
Sounds a little like a slice of heaven. Exactly what I'm gonna do for a couple weeks up at my cabin by Lake Lure in a week. About the only "leisure" tools wil be my chainsaws and lawn equipment.

I'll keep this simple, gathering a load of firewood with your family instead of playing video games or standing in line at Disneyland provides a much more fulfilling life in my world. The day I'm judged by my leisure time and not my knowledge and life skills, is the day I know society is about to crumble at it's own feet
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer Agree with you. Doing some things the old way can be nice. Doing things the old way because you must do so to survive gets old in a hurry....

Eustace Conway; is the most interesting and knowable person I have ever watched on the TV channel by far. Thank you for sharing this experience with us.
This place takes me back to my 1970s and early 1980s Boy Scouting experiences-thanks Josh and company for sharing your knowledge and doing what you love to do!
I'm old school.. I love learning how things were done long ago.. I pretty much live like this.. I cook everything from scratch.. Grow my own food.. Cook on a wood cook stove.. Freeze, can and smoke our food.. Teaching our grandkids how to do the same..
Ya see.....she's not around much during the day when I'm working and or filming....believe me brotha ...if she wanted to participate...she'd be in there
I always learn from you , when you said your brain is all cholesterol finally explains why I'm so smart,my doctor for years now has been telling me my cholesterol is really high :-)
I was under the impression that Eustic was closed to the public. Didn't he have a sing out on the gate saying no trespassing?! Jo Jo in VT 💕 😊 It's great if he is able to utilize his Beautiful property!
Awesome video. My kids and I made knives at Iron mountain metal works cool experience and he is right in the forging memories my kids still talk about it 2 years later
I've got arthritis pretty bad but listening to you Josh makes me want to somehow get past the pain and get out one of the guitars and play some fun relaxing stuff. My wife wants me to and I think somehow I'm going to do it. Really like y'all's channel. Thank you sir. 👍
Awesome!! it’s cool how the same type of survival skills 100 years ago were similar all over. I’m from out in the Rocky Mountain south west and so similar survival skills were a way of daily life. Thanks for sharing with us.
Great video Josh, thank you so much for sharing. One of these days, I am going to Turtle Island. Have a Blessed Week **HUGS & PRAYERS** from Kelly and the critters at Piney Haven Homestead.
Love Eustice's story about making everyone roll in the dirt to get it out of the way!! My football coach in high school used to do the same thing on rainy games. He would tell us to go out and do a head fist slide though the mud in warm ups to get us wet and dirty early on. Then we could get down to playing. No one was dry or clean. Jump in and get it out of the way early!!
The best things in life are free , so is a good fun fishing trip 🤗. Love you guys. Take care beautiful. Have fun 😋. Enjoy yourself , love this channel & music 🎶 too. God bless you always
Great video Josh ...Eustace was born in Columbia, S.C. but grew up in Gastonia, N.C. where I grew up he was a year younger than me and he actually went to the same high school, Ashbrook High School in Gastonia, N.C.
Another great video. Those structures on Turtle Island are awesome. They will be there 100 years. Can’t say that for the cookie cutter structures we build today.
Talk about watching the weather like a hawk, you bet. I know a man that has a roofing company and I've always been amazed that when I've mentioned the weather that he didn't seem to know what the forecast was. Just don't understand people today. Excellent video. 👍
Thanks, Josh. Great foundational root skills that should never be forgotten. Good to see you spotlighting this group. As AMM brother I appreciated the spirit of brotherhood evoked in this vid.
Great content as usual... more people need to experience places like turtle island and touch base with the real world. Love Eustace and what he stands for and see alot of that in you...keep on keepin on brotha... WOOOOOOOO!
At 13:01 I see that pile of wood and brush in the background with all the cast iron kettles so I'm wondering if the plan was to burn the kettles off to clean them? Lots of beautiful cast iron there. You said you're a nurse lol I'm (was) laboratory technician for around 20 years. I quit in 2015 due to health issues and now love growing a garden and canning and other 'homesteading ways'!
I love this episode of your channel. I'm from SE NC born and raised. Love the NC mountains and their ways and culture. I have a dear friend from my area who now lives in Greensboro who black smiths and is very good at it. I have some of his tomahawks and a tripod/spit that he made for campfires. Love the old way of doing things!!! I was born in the wrong century haha.
I'd like to spend a week's worth of my vacation time there at Turtle Island helping out with whatever chores need doing! I'm a welder by trade but was raised on a farm! I've also done some logging! I also cut and sale firewood, plow and plant gardens for others!
Ya know...I think it's good on both ends. I really enjoy and care for what Turtle Island represents....lots to learn up there about life...not to mention the physical and educational opportunities
I watch most of their shows on tv very educational an interesting.A lot of good information on homesteading an survival if ever needed I missing the moonshiner crews being it fits in the mountain life style also.Keep your videos coming I really enjoy them.
Mother Nature can take many things away from us but if we have the knowledge to do things the old ways we can still get along until things get back to normal. Also allows you to help your friend and neighbors when they are in the same situation.
WOW... So cool. I'm a Minnesota country boy that has been living in the north metro for too long. We are looking at a 11 acre homestead right now. Nice home with a huge shop and three ponds, one is about an acre and around 12 feet deep. Spring fed. I have been praying that we can make it work. It still is a sellers market even with the Covid-19. Waiting to hear about a possible offer being made from another agents buyer. I guess we will see what happens soon. Sad to see the thumbs down and some of the negative comments but you just carry on Brother!!! Some don't get that health and happiness is wonderful thing. Rich to me is more than money.... I'm off to go grab some dirt....rub it in my hands and take a little whiff. Won't hit the sink for a good while. Blessings to Ya'll
We had hog killings when I was a youngin. I might name a hog like I did once, wilbur, and then he ended up breakfast sausage. It's just the way it was. People sincerely amaze me that they dont know where their food comes from. We had chickens and goats and hogs. My step dad was a tobacco farmer and I worked putting in tobacco. I strung the leaves on the stick which then were taken to the barn and hung on tiers to be cured. I walked barefoot all summer and had a wonderful beautiful gully as my playground!! I would not change the way I grew up for nothing. The work ethic I learned and the skills and experience, I thank my Lord above for those things.
